The Effect of Crankshaft Phasing and Port Timing Asymmetry on Opposed-Piston Engine Thermal Efficiency
March 8, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: crankshaft phasing, low carbon vehicles, medium-duty truck, opposed-piston two-stroke engines, port height-to-stroke ratio, range extender
Opposed-piston, two-stroke engines reveal degrees of freedom that make them excellent candidates for next generation, highly efficient internal combustion engines for hybrid electric vehicles and power systems. This article reports simulation results that explore the influence of key control and geometrical parameters, specifically crankshaft phasing and intake and exhaust port height-to-stroke ratios, in obtaining best thermal efficiency. A model of a 0.75 L, single-cylinder opposed-piston two-stroke engine is exercised to predict fuel consumption as engine speed, load, crankshaft phasing, intake and exhaust port height-to-stroke ratios, and stoichiometry are varied for medium-duty truck and range extender applications. Under stoichiometric operation, optimal crankshaft phasing is seen at 0−5°, lower than reported in the literature. If stoichiometric operation is not mandated, best fuel consumption is achieved at an air-to-fuel equivalence ratio λ = 1.25 and 5−10° crankshaft phase ang... [more]

Power Performance Assessment of Vertical-Axis Tidal Turbines Using an Experimental Test Rig
March 8, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: laboratory tests, marine renewable energy, tidal energy, tidal turbine
This article presents the characteristic curves of a vertical-axis hydrokinetic tidal turbine of the Darrieus subtype aimed at meeting the electricity demand of port facilities located at harbors and estuaries with low water-speed conditions. The turbine was tested in the water-current flume of the University of Santiago de Compostela for several flow conditions with different water heights and water speeds. Blockage conditions were tested by examining the results from two groups of tests: with and without an accelerator device that restricts the flow around the rotor. The tip speed ratio and the power coefficient were used to characterize the performance of the turbine for each test. Finally, the results for open-field conditions were obtained by applying empirical expressions, which allowed us to assess the performance of the device in estuaries and harbors with known water-flow regimes.

Grasped Object Weight Compensation in Reference to Impedance Controlled Robots
March 8, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: EARL, impedance control, robots’ systems engineering, service robot
This paper addresses the problem of grasped object weight compensation in the one-handed manipulation of impedance controlled robots. In an exemplary identification procedure, the weight of an object and its centre of mass together with gripper kinematic configuration are identified. The procedure is based on the measurements from a 6-axis force/torque sensor mounted near the gripper. The proposed method reduces trajectory tracking errors coming from the model imprecision without compromising the main advantages of impedance control. The whole approach is applied according to the embodied agent paradigm and verified on the two-arm service robot both in simulation and on hardware. Due to the general description that follows system engineering standards, the method can be easily modified or applied to similar systems.

Recent Combustion Strategies in Gas Turbines for Propulsion and Power Generation toward a Zero-Emissions Future: Fuels, Burners, and Combustion Techniques
March 8, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
The effects of climate change and global warming are arising a new awareness on the impact of our daily life. Power generation for transportation and mobility as well as in industry is the main responsible for the greenhouse gas emissions. Indeed, currently, 80% of the energy is still produced by combustion of fossil fuels; thus, great efforts need to be spent to make combustion greener and safer than in the past. For this reason, a review of the most recent gas turbines combustion strategy with a focus on fuels, combustion techniques, and burners is presented here. A new generation of fuels for gas turbines are currently under investigation by the academic community, with a specific concern about production and storage. Among them, biofuels represent a trustworthy and valuable solution in the next decades during the transition to zero carbon fuels (e.g., hydrogen and ammonia). Promising combustion techniques explored in the past, and then abandoned due to their technological complexit... [more]

Insights into Partial Slips and Temperature Jumps of a Nanofluid Flow over a Stretched or Shrinking Surface
March 8, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Chebyshev pseudospectral technique, nanofluids, slip boundary condition, solar energy collector, stretching/shrinking sheets, temperature jump boundary condition
This paper elucidates the significance of partial slips and temperature jumps on the heat and mass transfer of a boundary layer nanofluid flowing through a stretched or shrinking surface. Considerable consideration is given to the dynamic properties of the nanofluid process, including Brownian motion and thermophoresis. A similarity transform is introduced to obtain a physical model of nonlinear ordinary differential equations, and the Chebyshev method of collocation is used to numerically analyze the influences of parameters of physical flow such as slip, temperature jump, Brownian motion, thermophoresis, suction (or injection) parameters, and Lewis and Prandtl numbers. The numerical results for temperature and concentration profiles, and heat and mass transfer rates, are graphically represented, and insights into the effects of slips and temperature jumps are revealed. In the case of a stretched sheet, the slip parameter enhances the temperature field and increases the thermal bounda... [more]

Single-Phase Heat Transfer Characteristics of Water in an Industrial Plate and Shell Heat Exchanger under High-Temperature Conditions
March 8, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: circular plate, industrial plate and shell heat exchanger, pressure drop, single-phase heat transfer, temperature distribution
This study investigates the single-phase heat transfer, pressure drop, and temperature distribution of water in an industrial plate and shell heat exchanger (PSHE) under high-temperature conditions. In this experiment, the hot fluid flows downward on the plate side, while the cold fluid flows upward on the shell side. In the single-phase heat transfer experiment on water, the Nu is in the range of 7.85−15.2 with a Re from 1200 to 3200, which is substantially lower than that on the plate heat exchanger (PHE) studied previously. The decrease in the Nu is attributed to the reduced cross-sectional heat transfer area from the flow imbalance in the PSHE. As the Re increases, the pressure drop on the plate side increases more rapidly than that on the shell side because of the difference in the port pressure drop, flow direction, and flow position on the plate. When the Re is 2620, the pressure drops on the plate and shell sides are 52.5 kPa and 25.5 kPa, respectively, a difference of 51.4%. T... [more]

Investigations on Pressure Fluctuations in the S-Shaped Region of a Pump−Turbine
March 8, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: frequency characteristic, pressure fluctuation, pump–turbine, S-shaped region
Hydraulic pumped storage is a special power generation and electricity shortage technology, which is usually operated with thermal power and nuclear power units, and plays a key role in ultra-high voltage and smart grid. Pressure fluctuations are the main reasons for the instability of the S-shaped region of pump−turbines, which seriously affects their lifespan and operation stability. To reveal the mechanism and propagation law of pressure fluctuations in the S-shaped region as well as numerical simulations at the turbine, the braking and the reverse pump operating conditions of a pump−turbine were carried out. Numerical results were validated using the performance experiments, and the generation mechanism and propagation law of pressure fluctuation were analyzed in detail. The analyses show that high-amplitude pressure fluctuations mainly occur in the braking and reverse pump operating conditions. Under the braking condition, a 0.49-fn low-frequency pressure fluctuation was captured,... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: ARPD solvent, asphalt–resin–paraffin deposits, bottomhole formation zone, complex technology, inhibitor, methods for preventing the formation of ARPDs, methods for removing ARPDs, Romashkinskoye field
A number of difficulties may be encountered in the final stages of oil field exploitation, including the formation of asphalt−resin−paraffin deposits (ARPDs). It is expedient to use complex technologies to remove the already formed deposits and prevent the formation of ARPDs. This paper focuses on the complex technology of oil field exploitation. This technology combines both the removal of organic deposits and the prevention of the formation of these deposits in the well bottomhole formation zone (BHFZ) system. The calculations for determining the process parameters of selling the ARPD inhibitor solution into the BHFZ are presented in this article. This complex technology includes the process of ARPD removal by flushing the well and the subsequent injection of the developed ARPD solvent into the BHFZ. In addition, the technology is complemented by a method of preventing the formation of these deposits. This method consists of squeezing the ARPD inhibitor and then pumping it by the sel... [more]

Parametric Study of a Supercritical CO2 Power Cycle for Waste Heat Recovery with Variation in Cold Temperature and Heat Source Temperature
March 8, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: cold temperature, exhaust gas, split cycle, supercritical CO2 (S-CO2) power cycle, waste heat recovery
The supercritical carbon dioxide (S-CO2) power cycle is a promising development for waste heat recovery (WHR) due to its high efficiency despite its simplicity and compactness compared with a steam bottoming cycle. A simple recuperated S-CO2 power cycle cannot fully utilize the waste heat due to the trade-off between the heat recovery and thermal efficiency of the cycle. A split cycle in which the working fluid is preheated by the recuperator and the heat source separately can be used to maximize the power output from a given waste heat source. In this study, the operating conditions of split S-CO2 power cycles for waste heat recovery from a gas turbine and an engine were studied to accommodate the temperature variation of the heat sink and the waste heat source. The results show that it is vital to increase the low pressure of the cycle along with a corresponding increase in the cooling temperature to maintain the low-compression work near the critical point. A Novel Methodology for Optimal SVC Location Considering N-1 Contingencies and Reactive Power Flows Reconfiguration
March 8, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: electrical power system, N-1 contingency, optimal power flow, optimal transmission switching, reactive compensation, static VAR compensator
In this research, an alternative methodology is proposed for the location of Static VAR Compensators (SVC) in power systems, considering the reconfiguration of reactive power flows through the optimal switching of the transmission stage, which resembles the contingency restriction N-1 usually considered in transmission expansion planning. Based on this methodology, the contingency index was determined, which made it possible to determine which is the contingency that generates the greatest voltage degradation in the system. For the quantification of reactive flows, optimal AC power flows were used, which minimize the operating costs of the power system subject to transmission line switching restrictions, line charge-ability, voltages and node angles. To determine the node in which the compensation should be placed, the contingency index criterion was used, verifying the voltage profile in the nodes. The proposed methodology was tested in the IEEE test systems of 9, 14 nodes and large-s... [more]

A Modified Resonant Column Device for In-Depth Analysis of Vibration in Cohesive and Cohesionless Soils
March 8, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: foundations, ground vibrations, offshore wind turbines, resonant column, soil dynamic testing
With the accelerating progression of global climate change, switching to renewable energy sources is inevitable. Wind energy is a fast-growing branch of this industry, and according to the 2021 Global Wind Report, this trend must continue in order to limit the increase in global average temperature. While onshore wind turbines still dominate and account for most recent growth, offshore wind turbines are becoming a promising alternative for geographical, power density-related or even aesthetic reasons. Offshore wind turbines are subjected to more complex loading conditions and proper foundation design is very challenging, however, this is crucial for ensuring and maintaining the structure’s reliability. Soil dynamic tests are one of the bases for wind turbine foundation design. Technical regulations in many countries require such tests to be carried out in a Resonant Column (RC). In this study, a modification of the RC sensors and data acquisition system was introduced in order to condu... [more]

An Online Security Prediction and Control Framework for Modern Power Grids
March 8, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: distributed generation, incremental machine learning, renewable energy sources, security
The proliferation of renewable energy sources distributed generation (RES-DG) into the grid results in time-varying inertia constant. To ensure the security of the grid under varying inertia, techniques for fast security assessment are required. In addition, considering the high penetration of RES-DG units into the modern grids, security prediction using varying grid features is crucial. The computation burden concerns of conventional time-domain security assessment techniques make it unsuitable for real-time security prediction. This paper, therefore, proposes a fast security monitoring model that includes security prediction and load shedding for security control. The attributes considered in this paper include the load level, inertia constant, fault location, and power dispatched from the renewable energy sources generator. An incremental Naïve Bayes algorithm is applied on the training dataset developed from the responses of the grid to transient stability simulations. An additive... [more]

Parametric Study of Eddy Current Brakes for Small-Scale Household Wind Turbine Systems
March 8, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: braking torque, eddy current brake (ECB), magnetic flux, pole arrangement, wind turbine generator
The design and application of eddy current brakes (ECBs) should be simple; further, ECBs should be used semi-permanently. This study aimed to determine major parameters for designing an ECB that can be applied to a small-scale wind turbine generator. To this end, an ECB was developed that could actuate without additional power, thus improving the efficiency of the generator. A series of simulations were conducted for a parametric study to pre-design ECBs suitable for small wind turbines. The six parameters chosen were disk thickness, number of magnets, radial location of magnets from center of disk, magnet pole arrangement, magnetic flux density, and rotational speed. The simulations were conducted on COMSOL Multiphysics. The results indicated that the number of magnets and magnet pole arrangements can significantly affect the performance curve of ECBs. Moreover, the disk thickness and rotational speed are linearly proportional to the braking torque.

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: anaerobic digestion, biological methanation, Carbon Dioxide, Energy Conversion, Hydrogen, methane, renewable energy storage
Biological methanation as a method of sector coupling between electric and gas grids is expected to be an integral part of the green energy change. Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) involving anaerobic digestion (AD) allow existing infrastructure to operate as energy conversion plants, to close carbon cycles and to generate long-term storable energy in the form of biomethane. Therefore, municipal raw sludge and additional organic residuals (co-substrates) are converted into biogas. Hydrogen is added to convert the carbon dioxide in the biogas into methane via biological methanation (BM). In this study, the energy amount that is convertible via BM in municipal digesters in Austria was calculated. The amount of energy, which can be transformed from electric surplus energy into biomethane, was assessed. Operational data from lab-scale digesters were combined with data from 28 Austrian full-scale wastewater treatment plants with AD. They represent 9.2 Mio population equivalents (PE), or... [more]

Keywords: bedding planes, deformation field, energy density, failure, rock burst, strain rates
The study of the mechanical properties and failure behaviors for coal with different bedding structures at various medium strain rates is of great importance for revealing the mechanism of rock burst. In our study, we systematically analyze the uniaxial compressive strength (UCS), acoustic emission (AE) characteristics, failure pattern, and risk of rock burst on coal specimens with two bedding orientations under ranged in strain rates from 10−4 s−1 to 10−2 s−1. The results reflect that and the bedding direction and the strain rates significantly affect the UCS and failure modes of coal specimens. The UCS of coal specimens with loading directions perpendicular to bedding planes (horizontal bedding) increases logarithmically with increasing strain rate while the UCS increases first and then decreases of coal specimens with loading directions parallel to bedding planes (vertical bedding). The AE cumulative energy of the specimens with horizontal bedding is an order of magnitude higher tha... [more]
