March 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: borehole thermal storage, capacity resistance model, ground source heat pump system, infinite cylindrical source, vertical spiral ground heat exchanger
Considering the heat capacity inside vertical spiral ground heat exchanger (VSGHEX) in the simulation is one of the most noteworthy challenge to design the ground source heat pump (GSHP) system with VSGHEXs. In this paper, a new simulation model for VSGHEXs is developed by combining the ICS model with the CaRM. The developed simulation model can consider the heat capacity inside VSGHEX and provide dynamic calculation with high speed and appropriate precision. In order to apply the CaRM, the equivalent length was introduced. Then, the equivalent length was approximated by comparing the results of the CaRM and the numerical calculation. In addition, the calculation model of the VSGHEX was integrated into the design and simulation tool for the GSHP system. The accuracy of the tool was verified by comparing with the measurements. The error between supply temperatures of the measurements and calculation is approximately 2 °C at the maximum. Finally, assuming GSHP systems with VSGHEXs, whose... [more]

Michał Kaczmarczyk, Barbara Tomaszewska, Leszek Pająk
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: electricity generation, geological conditions, geothermal resources, geothermal water, kalina cycle, organic rankine cycle
The article presents an assessment of the potential for using low enthalpy geothermal resources for electricity generation on the basis of the Małopolskie Voivodeship (southern Poland). Identification the locations providing the best prospects with the highest efficiency and possible gross power output. Thermodynamic calculations of power plants were based on data from several geothermal wells: the Bańska PGP-1, Bańska IG-1, Bańska PGP-3 and Chochołów PIG-1 which are working wells located in one of the best geothermal reservoirs in Poland. As the temperature of geothermal waters from the wells does not exceed 86 °C, considerations include the use of binary technologies—the Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) and Kalina Cycle. The potential gross capacity calculated for existing geothermal wells will not exceed 900 kW for ORC and 1.6 MW for Kalina Cycle. In the case of gross electricity, the total production will not exceed 3.3 GWh/year using the ORC, and will not exceed 6.3 GWh/year for the Ka... [more]

March 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: methanation, methane, SNG, UCG, underground coal gasification
An experimental campaign on the methane-oriented underground coal gasification (UCG) process was carried out in a large-scale laboratory installation. Two different types of coal were used for the oxygen/steam blown experiments, i.e., “Six Feet” semi-anthracite (Wales) and “Wesoła” hard coal (Poland). Four multi-day gasification tests (96 h continuous processes) were conducted in artificially created coal seams under two distinct pressure regimes-20 and 40 bar. The experiments demonstrated that the methane yields are significantly dependent on both the properties of coal (coal rank) and the pressure regime. The average CH4 concentration for “Six Feet” semi-anthracite was 15.8%vol. at 20 bar and 19.1%vol. at 40 bar. During the gasification of “Wesoła” coal, the methane concentrations were 10.9%vol. and 14.8%vol. at 20 and 40 bar, respectively. The “Six Feet” coal gasification was characterized by much higher energy efficiency than gasification of the “Wesoła” coal and for both tested co... [more]
Advanced Turbine Cycles with Organic Media
Marian Piwowarski, Krzysztof Kosowski
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: efficiency, ORC, thermodynamic cycles
Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) power plants have become very popular and have found their applications in systems with renewable sources of energy. So far their overall efficiencies are not very impressive and only for the upper temperature of about 300 °C do they exceed 20%. A drawback of these cycles is the limitation of the cycle upper temperature due to the heat exchanger technology and the materials used. However, it is possible to overcome these difficulties by certain modifications of the thermodynamic cycles, a proper choice of the working medium and the optimization of cycle parameters. In the paper the problems of choosing the working medium and the question of higher temperature at the turbine inlet have been discussed. Different modifications of the schemas of the thermodynamic cycles have also been taken into account. The variants of power plants with regenerators, reheaters and heat exchangers have been considered. The proposed increase in temperature (in some cases up to 60... [more]

Nguyen Xuan Khoa, Ocktaeck Lim
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: effective energy, peak temperature, pressure increase, residual gas, VPD/B
In this research, the residual gas, peak firing pressure increase, and effective release energy were completely investigated. To obtain this target, the experimental system is installed with a dynamo system and a simulation model was setup. Through combined experimental and simulation methods, the drawbacks of the hardware optimization method were eliminated. The results of the research show that the valve port diameter-bore ratio (VPD/B) has a significant effect on the residual gas, peak firing pressure increase, and effective release energy of a four-stroke spark ignition engine. In this research, the engine was performed at 3000 rpm and full load condition. Following increased IPD/B ratio of 0.3−0.5. The intake port and exhaust port diameter has a contrary effect on engine volumetric efficiency, the residual gas ratio increase 27.3% with larger intake port and decrease 18.6% with larger exhaust port. The engine will perform optimal thermal efficiency when the trapped residual gas fr... [more]

March 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: flow maldistribution, heat exchanger, inlet header, pressure drop, splitter plate
The pressure drop increases along with the decrease in the flow maldistribution in the two-stage distributing inlet headers of a plate-fin heat exchanger. To solve this issue, we proposed a new inlet header configuration with splitter plates to decrease the flow maldistribution and pressure drop simultaneously. We used computational fluid dynamic technology to analyze the flow properties in the inlet header configuration and calculated the flow maldistribution degree of the outlet channels and the pressure drop in the inlet header. We performed a sensitivity analysis between the structural parameters, the flow maldistribution degree, and the pressure drop. We determined the optimum values of the structural parameters (the construction of transition duct, the number of splitter plates, the inclined angle of outermost plates, the height of splitter plates, the height of inlet header, etc.), and acquired the optimum configuration of the improved inlet header. Compared with the traditional... [more]

March 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: economic analysis, exergo-advanced study, internal combustion engine, organic Rankine cycle, waste heat recovery
The waste heat recovery system (WHRS) is a good alternative to provide a solution to the waste energy emanated in the exhaust gases of the internal combustion engine (ICE). Therefore, it is useful to carry out research to improve the thermal efficiency of the ICE through a WHRS based on the organic Rankine cycle (ORC), since this type of system takes advantage of the heat of the exhaust gases to generate electrical energy. The organic working fluid selection was developed according to environmental criteria, operational parameters, thermodynamic conditions of the gas engine, and investment costs. An economic analysis is presented for the systems operating with three selected working fluids: toluene, acetone, and heptane, considering the main costs involved in the design and operation of the thermal system. Furthermore, an exergo-advanced study is presented on the WHRS based on ORC integrated to the ICE, which is a Jenbacher JMS 612 GS-N of 2 MW power fueled with natural gas. This advan... [more]

March 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: cogeneration, district heating, internal combustion engine, organic Rankine cycle, waste heat recovery
Improvement of energy conversion efficiency in prime movers has become of fundamental importance in order to respect EU 2020 targets. In this context, hybrid power plants comprising combined heat and power (CHP) prime movers integrated with the organic Rankine cycle (ORC) create interesting opportunities to additionally increase the first law efficiency and flexibility of the system. The possibility of adding supplementary electric energy production to a CHP system, by converting the prime movers’ exhaust heat with an ORC, was investigated. The inclusion of the ORC allowed operating the prime movers at full-load (thus at their maximum efficiency), regardless of the heat demand, without dissipating not required high enthalpy-heat. Indeed, discharged heat was recovered by the ORC to produce additional electric power at high efficiency. The CHP plant in its original arrangement (comprising three internal combustion engines of 8.5 MW size each) was compared to a new one, involving an ORC,... [more]

March 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: building energy consumption, building load forecasting, Energy Efficiency, rough set theory, thermal improved of buildings
In many regions, the heat used for space heating is a basic item in the energy balance of a building and significantly affects its operating costs. The accuracy of the assessment of heat consumption in an existing building and the determination of the main components of heat loss depends to a large extent on whether the energy efficiency improvement targets set in the thermal upgrading project are achieved. A frequent problem in the case of energy calculations is the lack of complete architectural and construction documentation of the analyzed objects. Therefore, there is a need to search for methods that will be suitable for a quick technical analysis of measures taken to improve energy efficiency in existing buildings. These methods should have satisfactory results in predicting energy consumption where the input is limited, inaccurate, or uncertain. Therefore, the aim of this work was to test the usefulness of a model based on Rough Set Theory (RST) for estimating the thermal energy... [more]

March 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: fatigue load, Surrogate Model, wind farm, wind turbine
Wind farm load assessment is typically conducted using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) or aeroelastic simulations, which need a lot of computer power. A number of applications, for example wind farm layout optimisation, turbine lifetime estimation and wind farm control, requires a simplified but sufficiently detailed model for computing the turbine fatigue load. In addition, the effect of turbine curtailment is particularly important in the calculation of the turbine loads. Therefore, this paper develops a fast and computationally efficient method for wind turbine load assessment in a wind farm, including the wake effects. In particular, the turbine fatigue loads are computed using a surrogate model that is based on the turbine operating condition, for example, power set-point and turbine location, and the ambient wind inflow information. The Turbine to Farm Loads (T2FL) surrogate model is constructed based on a set of high fidelity aeroelastic simulations, including the Dynamic Wak... [more]

Keywords: dual-loop ORC, entransy loss, entropy generation, exergy loss, mixture working fluids
The exergy, entropy, and entransy analysis for a dual-loop organic Rankine cycle (DORC) using a mixture of working fluids have been investigated in this study. A high-temperature (HT) loop was used to recover waste heat from internal combustion engine in 350 °C, and a low-temperature loop (LT) was used to absorb residual heat of engine exhaust gas and HT loop working fluids. Hexane/toluene, cyclopentane/toluene, and R123/toluene were selected as working fluid mixtures for HT loop, while R245fa/pentane was chosen for LT loop. Results indicated that the variation of entropy generation rate, entransy loss, entransy efficiency, and exergy loss are insensitive to the working fluids. The entransy loss rate and system net power output present the same variation trends, whereas a reverse trend for entropy generation rate and entransy efficiency, while the exergy analysis proved to be only utilized under fixed stream conditions. The results also showed that hexane/toluene is the preferred mixtu... [more]

Keywords: analytics method, five-parameter model, photovoltaic panels, single-diode model
In this paper, the seven traditional models of photovoltaic (PV) modules are reviewed comprehensively to find out the appropriate model for reliability. All the models are validated using the Matlab code and graphical comparisons between models are made. The accuracy and convergence of each model is evaluated using the data of manufactured PV panels. Then, a novel model is proposed showing its consistent performance. The three most key parameters of the single-diode model are self-revised to adapt to various types of PV modules. This new method is verified in three types of PV panels’ data measured by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), USA. The validated data show promising results when the error RMSEs’ range of the proposed model is under 0.36.

March 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: heat transfer in annular cylinder, thermal storage system, unsteady natural convection
Extensive numerical analysis was performed for the unsteady state, natural convection in the annular cylinders. The cylinder’s boundaries were thermally insulated, except the inner surface. The fluid (water) in the cylinder initially was assumed at a cold temperature while the inner surface was subjected to a high temperature. The time history for the heat transfer by diffusion and advection was studied. The time needed for fully charging the storage tank and rate of heat transfer was calculated. The predicted results were compared with the pure heat diffusion process and with a steady-state convection system. Therefore, CFD simulations were performed for natural convection in the storage tank. The main objective of this study was to establish correlations for the rate of heat transfer as a function of time and other controlling parameters. The correlation is needed in designing a thermal energy storage system for domestic and industrial heating processes. One of the drawbacks of the c... [more]

This study is an elaboration on the conference article written by the same authors, which presented the results of laboratory tests on the biogas efficiency of the following substrates: maize silage (MS), pig manure (PM), potato waste (PW), and sugar beet pulp (SB). This article presents methane yields from the same substrates, but also on a technical scale. Apart from that, it presents an original methodology of defining the Biochemical Methane Potential Correction Coefficient (BMPCC) based on the calculation of biomass conversion on an industrial scale and on a laboratory scale. The BMPCC was introduced as a tool to enable uncomplicated verification of the operation of a biogas plant to increase its efficiency and prevent undesirable losses. The estimated BMPCC values showed that the volume of methane produced in the laboratory was overestimated in comparison to the amount of methane obtained under technical conditions. There were differences observed for each substrate. They ranged... [more]

Keywords: Alternative Fuels, emissions, HEFA process, synthetic blending component, turbine engine
In the next decade, due to the desire for significant reduction in the carbon footprint left by the aviation sector and the development of a sustainable alternatives to petroleum, fuel from renewable sources will play an increasing role as a propellant for turbine aircraft engines. Currently, apart from five types of jet fuel containing synthesized hydrocarbons that are certified by the ASTM D7566 standard, there is yet another synthetic blending component that is at the stage of testing and certification. Hydroprocessed esters and fatty acids enable the production of a synthetic component for jet fuel from any form of native fat or oil. Used feedstock affects the final synthetic blending component composition and consequently the properties of the blend for jet fuel and, as a result, the operation of turbine engines. A specialized laboratory test rig with a miniature turbojet engine was used for research, which is an interesting alternative to complex and expensive tests with full sca... [more]

Keywords: CO2 transcritical booster, commercial refrigeration, economizer, integrated mechanical subcooling, subcooling, variable frequency drive
CO2 transcritical booster architectures are widely analyzed to be applied in centralized commercial refrigeration plants in consonance with the irrevocable phase-out of HFCs. Most of these analyses show the limitations of CO2 cycles in terms of energy efficiency, especially in warm countries. From the literature, several improvements have been proposed to raise the booster efficiency in high ambient temperatures. The use of economizers is an interesting technique to reduce the temperature after the gas cooler and to improve the energy efficiency of transcritical CO2 cycles. The economizer cools down the high pressure’s line of CO2 by evaporating the same refrigerant extracted from another point of the facility. Depending on the extraction point, some configurations are possible. In this work, different booster architectures with economizers have been analyzed and compared. From the results, the combination of the economizer with the additional compressor allows obtaining energy savings... [more]

Ground source heat pump (GSHP) systems are becoming popular in space heating and cooling applications. Despite this fact, in most countries, the role of this energy is not as important as it should be nowadays according to its capabilities for energy generation without CO2 emissions, mainly due to the lack of technical knowledge about GSHP performance. The analysis of the physical processes that take part in the geothermal exchanges is necessary to allow the optimal exploitation of the geothermal resources. For all the above, an experimental geothermal device was built in the laboratory to control the phenomena that take place in a borehole heat exchanger (BHE). A 1-m high single-U heat exchanger was inserted in the center of a polyethylene container which also included granular material (surrounding ground) and the grouting material. Temperature sensors were situated in different positions of the experimental setup. Physical processes are evaluated to finally validate the model. Numer... [more]
