Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: compressions ratio, emission, engine performance, fusel oil, removal of gum and water content, SI engine
In this study, the effects of the use of improved fusel oil on engine performance and on exhaust emissions in a spark-ignition engine were investigated experimentally in consideration of the water, gum, and moisture content at high compression ratios according to TS EN 228 standards. In the study, a four-stroke, single-cylinder, air-cooled, spark plug ignition engine with an 8/1 compression ratio was used at three different compression ratios (8/1, 8.5/1, 9.12/1). Experiments were performed for six different ratios of fuel blends (F0, F10, F20, F30, F40, and F50) at a constant speed and different loads. The data obtained from the experiments were compared with the original operating parameters of the engine while using gasoline. According to the test results, the optimal engine performance was at a 9.12/1 compression ratio and with a F30 fuel blend. With the increase from an 8/1 to 9.12/1 compression ratio for the F30 fuel blend, the overall efficiency increased by 6.91%, and the speci... [more]

Wind Turbines with Truncated Blades May Be a Possibility for Dense Wind Farms
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: truncated rotors, turbine blades, wind farms, wind turbines
We experimentally explored the impact of a wind turbine with truncated blades on the power output and wake recovery, and its effects within 2 × 3 arrays of standard units. The blades of the truncated turbine covered a fraction of the outer region of the rotor span and replaced with a zero-lift structure around the hub, where aerodynamic torque is comparatively low. This way, the incoming flow around the hub may be used as a mixing enhancement mechanism and, consequently, to reduce the flow deficit in the wake. Particle image velocimetry was used to characterize the incoming flow and wake of various truncated turbines with a variety of blade length ratios L / R = 0.6 , 0.7, and 1, where L is the length of the working section of the blade of radius R. Power output was obtained at high frequency in each of the truncated turbines, and also at downwind units within 2 × 3 arrays with streamwise spacing of Δ x / d T = 4 , 5, and 6, with d T being the t... Recursive State of Charge and State of Health Estimation Method for Lithium-Ion Batteries Based on Coulomb Counting and Open Circuit Voltage
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: coulomb counting, lithium-ion battery, open circuit voltage, state of charge, state of health, temperature
The state of charge (SOC) and state of health (SOH) are two crucial indicators needed for a proper and safe operation of the battery. Coulomb counting is one of the most adopted and straightforward methods to calculate the SOC. Although it can be implemented for all kinds of applications, its accuracy is strongly dependent on the operation conditions. In this work, the behavior of the batteries at different current and temperature conditions is analyzed in order to adjust the charge measurement according to the battery efficiency at the specific operating conditions. The open-circuit voltage (OCV) is used to reset the SOC estimation and prevent the error accumulation. Furthermore, the SOH is estimated by evaluating the accumulated charge between two different SOC using a recursive least squares (RLS) method. The SOC and SOH estimations are verified through an extensive test in which the battery is subjected to a dynamic load profile at different temperatures.

March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Energy Storage, energy system, geographic information system, Hydrogen, natural gas network, water electrolysis, wind energy
The results of a techno-economic model of distributed wind-hydrogen systems (WHS) located at each existing wind farm on the island of Ireland are presented in this paper. Hydrogen is produced by water electrolysis from wind energy and backed up by grid electricity, compressed before temporarily stored, then transported to the nearest injection location on the natural gas network. The model employs a novel correlation-based approach to select an optimum electrolyser capacity that generates a minimum levelised cost of hydrogen production (LCOH) for each WHS. Three scenarios of electrolyser operation are studied: (1) curtailed wind, (2) available wind, and (3) full capacity operations. Additionally, two sets of input parameters are used: (1) current and (2) future techno-economic parameters. Additionally, two electricity prices are considered: (1) low and (2) high prices. A closest facility algorithm in a geographic information system (GIS) package identifies the shortest routes from each... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: diagnostic and monitoring, fiber optic sensor, power transformer
Diagnostic and condition monitoring of power transformers are key actions to guarantee their safe operation. The subsequent benefits include reduced service interruptions and economic losses associated with their unavailability. Conventional test methods developed for the condition assessment of power transformers have certain limitations. To overcome such problems, fiber optic-based sensors for monitoring the condition of transformers have been developed. Flawlessly built-up fiber optic-based sensors provide online and offline assessment of various parameters like temperature, moisture, partial discharges, gas analyses, vibration, winding deformation, and oil levels, which are based on different sensing principles. In this paper a variety and assessment of different fiber optic-based diagnostic techniques for monitoring power transformers are discussed. It includes significant tutorial elements as well as some analyses.

The Influence of Internal Heat Exchanger on the Performance of Transcritical CO2 Water Source Heat Pump Water Heater
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: heat pump water heater, internal heat exchanger, transcritical CO2
The characteristics of the transcritical CO2 heat pump water heater (HPWH) system are; a lower inlet hot water temperature (Ti-hw) (sometimes this is lower than the water source temperature), and an outlet gas cooler temperature (To-gc) which is affected by the Ti-hw and often lower than the critical temperature. In order to study the effects of the internal heat exchanger (IHX) on the operational performance of the transcritical CO2 HPWH when To-gc is low, a transcritical CO2 water source HPWH experiment platform is established to conduct experimental research and comparative analysis on the operational performance of the transcritical CO2 water source HPWH, with or without IHX. It is found that, if only the coefficient of performance (COP) and heating at the optimal exhaust pressure of the transcritical CO2 water source HPWH were considered, COP and the heating of the non-IHX system would be slightly higher than those of the IHX system at the lower hot water flow and water source tem... A Study on an Improved Three-Winding Coupled Inductor Based DC/DC Boost Converter with Continuous Input Current
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: continuous conduction mode (CCM), coupled inductors, DC/DC boost converter
This paper proposes a novel high voltage conversion gain DC/DC boost converter for renewable energy applications and systems. The proposed converter utilizes a three-winding coupled inductor. The presented converter benefits from a unique advantage, as the actual turn ratio of the coupled inductor is decreased in the charging state of the coupled inductor. However, while the inductor is discharging, the actual turn ratio is increased. This feature leads to a very high voltage conversion gain. Furthermore, a passive clamp circuit is employed to recover the leakage current of the coupled inductor. The voltage stresses on the semiconductors are also reduced. In addition, the average current of the primary side of the coupled inductor is zero. This will reduce the total energy stored in the passive elements of the converter. The paper analyzes the Continuous Conduction Mode (CCM) and the operation principles of the presented converter are thoroughly derived. A 250 W laboratory hardware pro... [more]

Ukraine Energy Sector Management Using Hybrid Renewable Energy Systems
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: energy consumption, energy supply, hybrid renewable energy systems, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, Renewable and Sustainable Energy
The Ukrainian energy sector is one of the most inflexible energy sectors in the world as a result of the almost complete depreciation of the equipment of the main sources of power supply: nuclear, thermal, and hydropower. In connection with existing problems, there is a need to develop and use new energy-saving technologies based on renewable energy sources. In this proposed research, a regression model of renewable energy growth in the energy sector of Ukraine was developed. The studied literature reveals that the independent use of individual functioning elements of renewable energy sources function as the primary power source that is not an optimal solution for stable energy supply. This study proposes the use of hybrid renewable energy systems, namely a combination of two or more renewable energy sources that will help each other to achieve higher energy efficiency, accelerate the growth of renewable energy in the share of the Ukrainian energy sector and/or improve functioning with... Assessment of the Resistance Value of Trash Racks at a Small Hydropower Plant Operating at Low Temperature
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: head losses, hydropower, iced trash racks, SHP
Trash racks are the first element mounted in inlet channels of hydraulic structures. Their primary task is to capture coarse pollutants flowing in the riverbed/river channel and protect water facilities downstream. With the use of these devices, it is possible to separate coarse suspended matter, branches carried with the current, floating plastic elements, etc., which undoubtedly contributes to a trouble-free flow through culverts or channels and prevents hydroelectric power plant turbines from failure. An important issue here is also to ensure the proper operation of trash racks, particularly in respect of hydraulic structures whose task is to convert water energy into electricity (hydropower plants). Proper operation of trash racks minimizes losses arising from obstructing the free flow of water through accumulated waste or, in the wintertime, through icing. Incorrect work in this area entails specific head losses, and consequently leads to economic harm. In the paper, the resistanc... [more]

The Effect of Deep Energy Retrofit on The Hourly Power Demand of Finnish Detached Houses
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: deep retrofit, detached house, electric heating, energy renovation, ground-source heat pump, power demand, single-family house
This study examines how the energy renovation of old detached houses affects the hourly power consumption of heating and electricity in Finland. As electrification of heating through heat pumps becomes more common, the effects on the grid need to be quantified. Increased fluctuation and peak power demand could increase the need for fossil-based peaking power plants or call for new investments to the distribution infrastructure. The novelty in this study is the focus on hourly power demand instead of just annual energy consumption. Identifying the influence of building energy retrofits on the instantaneous power demand can help guide policy and investments into building retrofits and related technology. The work was done through dynamic building simulation and utilized building configurations obtained through multi-objective optimization. Deep energy retrofits decreased both the total and peak heating power consumption. However, the use of air-source heat pumps increased the peak power... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: gas reservoir distribution, irreducible water saturation, low-permeability sandstone reservoir, non-Darcy flow, Sulige gas field
In order to reveal the gas−water distribution and formation mechanism of the low-permeability sandstone gas reservoir, the gas reservoir distribution and the formation mechanism in a low-permeability sandstone gas reservoir are investigated using data obtained from a physical simulation experiment of gas percolation. The exploration and experimenting for petroleum in the upper Paleozoic gas pool of the Sulige gas field in the Ordos basin in this paper. Results showed that the gas reservoir is characterized by low gas saturation, a complex distribution relationship of gas−water, and weak gas−water gravity differentiation. The characteristics of gas distribution are closely related to permeability, gas flow, and migration force. The capillary pressure difference is the main driving force of gas accumulation. There exists a threshold pressure gradient as gas flows in low-permeability sandstone. The lower that permeability, the greater the threshold pressure gradient. When the driving forc... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: biodiesel, optimisation, ultrasonic-assisted technology, waste coffee grounds
Biodiesel is a proven alternative fuel that can serve as a substitute for petroleum diesel due to its renewability, non-toxicity, sulphur-free nature and superior lubricity. Waste-based non-edible oils are studied as potential biodiesel feedstocks owing to the focus on the valorisation of waste products. Instead of being treated as municipal waste, waste coffee grounds (WCG) can be utilised for oil extraction, thereby recovering an energy source in the form of biodiesel. This study evaluates oil extraction from WCG using ultrasonic and Soxhlet techniques, followed by biodiesel conversion using an ultrasonic-assisted transesterification process. It was found that n-hexane was the most effective solvent for the oil extraction process and ultrasonic-assisted technology offers a 13.5% higher yield compared to the conventional Soxhlet extraction process. Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: contract price, electric vehicle (EV) owners, electric vehicle aggregator (EVA), Goal programming (GP), stochastic programming, uncertainty
Selecting an appropriate contract price between electric vehicle aggregators and electric vehicle owners is an uncertain, multi-criteria decision-making issue. In addition, the results can cause strong conflict due to different aims: the optimal value for increasing electric vehicle aggregator (EVA) profit negatively affects the cost for owners. The value of the contract price can change the optimal scheduling of EVAs in the day-ahead market. Taking into consideration this context, the current paper proposes to solve the multi-objective scheduling problem of an aggregator with a goal programming approach. The presented approach sets a satisfaction level for each goal according to decision-makers’ preference. Numerical results illustrate the validity of this approach to balance different performance measures. Furthermore, optimal scheduling of electric vehicle aggregators in the day-ahead market is created.

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: dynamic coefficient method, model based on data, turboprop engine
Exact component characteristics are required for establishing an accurate component level aeroengine model. When component characteristics is lacking, the dynamic coefficient method based on test data, is suitable for establishing a single-input and single-output aeroengine model. When it is applied to build multiple-input, multiple-output aeroengine models, some parameters are assumed to be unchanged, which causes large error. An improved modeling method based on rig data is proposed to establish a double-input, double-output model for a micro variable-pitch turboprop engine. The input variables are fuel flow and pitch angle, and the output variables are rotational speeds of the core engine and the propeller. First, in order to gather modeling data, a test bench is designed and rig tests are carried out. Then, two conclusions are obtained by analyzing the rig data, based on which, the power turbine output is taken as the function of the core speed and the propeller speed. The establis... [more]
