Multi-Criteria Fuzzy Evaluation of the Planned Offshore Wind Farm Investments in Poland
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: energy management, fuzzy TOPSIS, multi-criteria decision aid, offshore wind farms, renewable energy sources, sensitivity analysis, similarity aggregation method, Sustainability, uncertainty.
In recent years, the dynamic development of renewable energy has been visible all over the world, including Poland. Wind energy is one of the most used renewable energy sources. In Poland, by 2030, it is planned to commission at least six offshore wind farms with a total capacity of 3.8 GW. It is estimated that these investments will increase Poland’s GDP by approximately PLN 60 billion and increase tax revenues by PLN 15 billion. Therefore, they could be a strong stimulus for the development of the Polish economy and may be of great importance in recovering from the crisis caused by the economic constraints related to the COVID-19 pandemic. The aim of the article is a multi-criteria evaluation of the investments planned in Poland in offshore wind farms and identification of potentially the most economically effective investments. To account for the uncertainty in this decision problem, a modified fuzzy Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) method w... [more]

Estimation of Self-Sufficiency Rate in Detached Houses Using Home Energy Management System Data
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: energy analysis, heat pump water heater, home energy management system, photovoltaic, self-sufficiency rate, storage battery.
Japan’s energy consumption in 2018 was about 2.5 times that in 1975, with the increase in the household sector being the largest at 28%. Most of primary energy is still fossil fuel, and it is urgent to reduce energy consumption in the household sector. The purpose of this paper was to identify ways to reduce household energy consumption without compromising the quality of life in residence. However, the reduction methods vary by region, building specifications, household type, equipment specifications, season, and weather. The value of this paper is based on a systematic analysis of home energy management systems (HEMS) data from about 50,000 households under various conditions. We are analyzing ways to reduce energy consumption. Few studies have analyzed this much back-up data, which is likely to lead to a reduction in CO2 emissions across the household sector. To explore ways to reduce energy consumption in this sector, the company has introduced and provided services for home energy... [more]

Experimental Study on Behavior of Coolants, Particularly the Oil-Cooling Method, in Electric Vehicle Motors Using Hairpin Winding
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: electric vehicles, hairpin winding, mixture of oil and air, oil cooling, thermal management, traction motors.
This paper analyzes the characteristics of oil behavior in the oil-cooling of motors with hairpin winding to understand how to maximize cooling performance. The oil cooling is performed by directly spraying oil onto the motor components. The results show that as the temperature of the oil increases, the viscosity decreases, and the oil film is formed more evenly; however, oil splashing also increases. Similarly, as the flow rate increases, oil splashing also increases, but the amount of oil forming the oil film increases. However, the oil film is not affected by the rotor’s rotation. In contrast, the immersed oil is found to be closely related to the rotor’s rotation. As the rotational speed increases, the immersion oil is mixed with the air, and oil churning occurs. The mixing phenomenon increases as the temperature and flow rate of the oil increases. The higher the oil level, the greater the oil churning. As the oil is mixed with air, the heat transfer coefficient decreases, which ad... [more]

A Robust Nonlinear Controller for PMSG Wind Turbines
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: lyapunov, nonlinear control, permanent magnet synchronous generator, wind turbine controls.
In this paper, a nonlinear backstepping controller is proposed to manage the performance of a full-variable permanent magnet synchronous generator wind turbine. This nonlinear controller achieves a rotational speed objective for the generator and is validated through Lyapunov-based stability analysis. Additionally, this objective is accomplished without a measurement for wind speed that influences the wind torque. The proposed scheme is compared to a typical linear controller through simulation results. Simulation tests are performed to compare the response time and average error of each controller in both a drastic and realistic dynamic wind environment. These results demonstrate that the proposed controller is far more robust to wind turbulence than traditional control schemes. The simulation results of this study indicate a 1000% increase in response time and 3000% decrease in average controller error.

Visualization of Chemical Heavy Oil EOR Displacement Mechanisms in a 2D System
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: 2D model tests, chemical flooding, chemical flooding, heavy oil, heavy oil recovery mechanisms, Hele-Shaw cell.
This study aims to develop a visual understanding of the macro-displacement mechanisms associated with heavy oil recovery by water and chemical flooding in a 2D system. The sweep efficiency improvements by water, surfactant, polymer, and surfactant-polymer (SP) were evaluated in a Hele-Shaw cell with no local pore-level trapping of fluids. The results demonstrated that displacement performance is highly correlated to the mobility ratio between the fluids. Surfactant and water reached similar oil recovery values at similar mobility ratios; however, they exhibited different flow patterns in the 2D system—reductions in IFT can lead to the formation of emulsions and alter flow pathways, but in the absence of porous media these do not lead to significant improvements in oil recovery. Polymer flooding displayed a more stable front and a higher reduction in viscous fingering. Oil recovery by SP was achieved mostly by polymer rather than due to the effect of the surfactant. The surfactant in t... [more]

Exergy Analysis of Adiabatic Liquid Air Energy Storage (A-LAES) System Based on Linde−Hampson Cycle
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: adiabatic liquid air energy storage system, cold storage, cryogenic technologies, exergy analysis, Linde–Hampson cycle.
Efficiently storing energy on a large scale poses a major challenge and one that is growing in importance with the increasing share of renewables in the energy mix. The only options at present are either pumped hydro or compressed air storage. One novel alternative is to store energy using liquid air, but this technology is not yet fully mature and requires substantial research and development, including in-depth energy and exergy analysis. This paper presents an exergy analysis of the Adiabatic Liquid Air Energy Storage (A-LAES) system based on the Linde−Hampson cycle. The exergy analysis was carried out for four cases with different parameters, in particular the discharge pressure of the air at the inlet of the turbine (20, 40, 100, 150 bar). The results of the analysis show that the greatest exergy destruction can be observed in the air evaporator and in the Joule−Thompson valve. In the case of air evaporator, the destruction of exergy is greatest for the lowest discharge pressure,... [more]

April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: exhaust emissions, passenger cars, real driving emissions.
The paper describes the methodology of research of exhaust emissions from a combustion engine under engine states determined by the vehicle actual operation in the RDE test. The processes of quantities determining the vehicle motion and engine states have been recorded, along with the exhaust emission intensity. Based on the developed research methodology, zero-dimensional characteristics of the processes of the emission intensity have been determined under the conditions of urban, rural and motorway traffic, as well as in the entire test. The authors also determined the average specific distance exhaust emissions under the conditions of urban, rural and motorway traffic, as well as in the entire test. Based on the above results, the unique characteristics of the relation of the average specific distance emissions and the average vehicle speed have been obtained. The obtained characteristics may be used in the modeling of exhaust emissions from motor vehicles under actual traffic condi... [more]

Fossil vs. Active Geothermal Systems: A Field and Laboratory Method to Disclose the Relationships between Geothermal Fluid Flow and Geological Structures at Depth
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: fieldwork, geothermal systems, hydrothermal veins, structural geology.
Comparison between fossil and analogue active geothermal systems permit to obtain key-parameters to define a conceptual model of the area under exploration. The approach is based on structural, kinematic, and fluid inclusions analyses. The fossil system is investigated to describe the distribution of the hydrothermal mineralization as witness of the fluid flow through geological structures and bodies, at depth. Structural and kinematic data (to define the preferential direction of fluid flow) are collected in structural stations and by scan lines and scan boxes on key outcrops. Distribution, length, width of fractures, and hydrothermal veins bring to evaluate permeability in the fossil system and, by analogy, in the deep roots of the active system. Fluid inclusions analysis shed light on density, viscosity, and temperature of the paleo-fluids. Data integration provides the hydraulic conductivity. In active geothermal systems, fieldwork is addressed to paleo-stress analysis with data fr... [more]

April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: air conditioning, borehole heat exchanger, experimental, gas injection, peak load.
The objective of this work is to analyze a gas injection borehole heat exchanger coupled with a desiccant assisted air conditioning system during cooling and heating operation. A common problem that occurs in air conditioning systems is peak loads, during which the cooling or heating power of the soil can be exceeded. To counteract this drawback, a gas injection borehole heat exchanger, which is capable of creating artificial groundwater flow along the heat exchanger by inducing a pressure difference inside the well, is used. Experimental results of the performance differences between a conventional and a gas injection borehole heat exchanger are presented. Under the same inlet conditions, a reduction in the outlet temperature of up to 2 °C is achieved compared with an equivalent conventional borehole heat exchanger in cooling mode. The maximum cooling power is increased by 26%. As a result, a fast and dynamic responding control of the heat transfer between the heat exchanger and the s... [more]

Enhanced Contingency Analysis—A Power System Operator Tool
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: contingency analysis, distributed generation, electric load model, Energy Storage, modal analysis, voltage stability.
Contingency analysis (CA) is a well-known function in power system planning and operation. In accordance with CA results, the system operator dispenses information regarding static security of the power system (overloads and/or voltage outside tolerable limits). However, classic CA with remedial action schemes cannot distinguish safe operating regimes from potentially dangerous ones in terms of voltage (in)stability. In fact, voltage instability is considered as one of the major threats leading to power system insecurity. Therefore, in this study an enhanced contingency analysis (ECA) is presented where the classical CA is extended with static voltage analysis based on the modal analysis. The article presents a dedicated methodology for the proposed ECA tool, with special emphasis on the analysis of corrective measures provided by the system operator, intended for enhancing power system security (regulation transformer action, distributed generation and energy storage). Damping Studies on PMLG-Based Wave Energy Converter under Oceanic Wave Climates
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: damping coefficient, optimal, permanent magnet linear generator, wave climate, wave energy converter.
Wave energy converters (WECs), which are designed to harvest ocean wave energy, have recently been improved by the installation of numerous conversion mechanisms; however, it is still difficult to find an appropriate method that can compromise between strong environmental impact and robust performance by transforming irregular wave energy into stable electrical power. To solve this problem, an investigation into the impact of varied wave conditions on the dynamics of WECs and to determine an optimal factor for WECs to comply with long-term impacts was performed. In this work, we researched the performance of WECs influenced by wave climates. We used a permanent magnet linear generator (PMLG)-based WEC that was invented at Uppsala University. The damping effect was first studied with a PMLG-type WEC. Then, a group of sea states was selected to investigate their impact on the power production of the WEC. Two research sites were chosen to investigate the WEC’s annual energy production as... [more]

Estimation of the Performance Aging of the Vestas V52 Wind Turbine through Comparative Test Case Analysis
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: performance analysis, power curve, technical systems aging, wind energy, wind turbines.
It is a common sense expectation that the efficiency of wind turbines should decline with age, similarly to what happens with most technical systems. Due to the complexity of this kind of machine and the environmental conditions to which it is subjected, it is far from obvious how to reliably estimate the impact of aging. In this work, the aging of five Vestas V52 wind turbines is analyzed. The test cases belong to two different sites: one is at the Dundalk Institute of Technology in Ireland, and four are sited in an industrial wind farm in a mountainous area in Italy. Innovative data analysis techniques are employed: the general idea consists of considering appropriate operation curves depending on the working control region of the wind turbines. When the wind turbine operates at fixed pitch and variable rotational speed, the generator speed-power curve is studied; for higher wind speed, when the rotational speed has saturated and the blade pitch is variable, the blade pitch-power cur... An Innovative Solar-Biomass Energy System to Increase the Share of Renewables in Office Buildings
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: efficient buildings, energy generation, Renewable and Sustainable Energy.
Increasing the energy efficiency of residential and non-residential buildings is a crucial point towards the development of the sustainable cities of the future. To reach such a goal, the commonly employed intervention measures (for instance, on facades and glass) are not sufficient and efforts in reaching a fully renewable energy generation are mandatory. In this context, this paper discusses the applicability of a system with solar and biomass as the main energy sources in different climates for heating, cooling, domestic hot water and electricity generation in office buildings. The energy system includes solar thermal collectors with thermoelectric generators, a biomass boiler, a reversible heat pump/organic Rankine cycle and an adsorption chiller. The results showed that the system can operate with a share of renewables higher than 70% for all energy needs, with up to 80% of the overall energy demand supplied only by solar and biomass sources even in the northern locations.

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: BECCS, Ca-looping, energy integration, livestock waste, negative carbon emissions.
The global carbon emissions from the tertiary sector have increased during the last years, becoming a target sector for carbon capture technologies. This study analyzes the potential application of a carbon capture system (CCS) to the usage of biogas from a livestock waste treatment plant (LWTP) and solid biomass. The proposed BECCS system fulfils the requirement of energy demands of the LWTP and generates electricity. The CCS is sized to consume the biogas produced and the selected operation parameters ensure a high capture efficiency. The BECCS is completed by a Rankine cycle fed by solid biomass and waste heat from the capture process is sized and implemented to produce electricity and steam. The proposed concept handles 1534 kW of solid biomass and 1398 kW of biogas to produce 746.20 kWe and cover the heat demand of a LWTP, 597 kWth. The avoided CO2 emissions sum up to 1620 ton CO2/year. Optimization of Thermal Parameters of the Coke Oven Battery by Modified Methodology of Temperature Measurement in Heating Flues as the Management Tool in the Cokemaking Industry
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: coke oven battery, heating flues, temperature adjustment, temperature measurement.
Coke production is still of great economic importance due to its crucial role in the steel production process. The reliability of the operation of coke oven batteries depends on the maintenance of good technical condition of their ceramic massif, which in turn requires ensuring proper operation of the heating system and maintaining temperature stability in the heating flues. Regularly performed temperature measurements in heating flues due to the size of the battery and the dynamics of accompanying processes do not reflect the actual thermal state of the object at a given time. Corrections commonly introduced to the results of temperature measurements in heating flues, taking into account so-called reversion, significantly improve the accuracy of the obtained measurement results. However, still the interpretation of the results of temperature measurements in the coke oven battery heating flues does not take into account its changes during the coking cycle, even though they reach up to... Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: conversion efficiency, evacuated flat panel, selective solar absorber, solar energy, thermal emittance, thermal energy.
A new Selective Solar Absorber, designed to improve the Sun-to-thermal conversion efficiency at mid temperatures in high vacuum flat thermal collectors, is presented. Efficiency has been evaluated by using analytical formulas and a numerical thermal model. Both results have been experimentally validated using a commercial absorber in a custom experimental set-up. Efficiency Improvement of Photovoltaic Modules via Back Surface Cooling
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: experimental analysis, PV cooling, PV efficiency improvement, spray cooling, water cooling.
Crystalline silicon photovoltaics are a cardinal and well-consolidated technology for the achievement of energy efficiency goals, being installed worldwide for the production of clean electrical energy. However, their performance is strongly penalized by the thermal drift, mostly in periods of high solar radiation where solar cells reach considerably high temperatures. To limit this aspect, the employment of cooling systems appears a promising and viable solution. For this purpose, four different cooling systems, working on the photovoltaic (PV) panel back surface, were proposed and investigated in an experimental set-up located at the University of Calabria (Italy). Hourly electrical output power and efficiency were provided accounting for different meteorological conditions in several months of the experimental campaign. The results demonstrated that a simple spray cooling technique can provide an absolute increment of electrical efficiency of up to 1.6% and an average percentage inc... [more]

April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: displacement discontinuity method, hydraulic fracturing, multiple fractures, stress shadowing, thermal stress.
In this study, a coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical model to simulate multiple hydraulic fracture propagation is presented. Fracture propagation with elastic deformation is described by using a displacement discontinuity method. The temperature distribution and induced thermal stress are calculated via a semi-analytical method in an explicit way. An iterative scheme is proposed to solve the coupling between fracture propagation with fluid flow and induced thermal stress. The numerical model is validated against related analytical solutions. Several numerical cases are modeled to investigate the controlling factors for uniform growth of multiple fractures. Results show that using non-uniform fracture spacings and proper increasing the spacing for fractures away from the heel of wellbore promote the uniform growth of multiple fractures by comparison with using uniform fracture spacings. Increasing the perforation diameter for the middle cluster also works. Besides, single-wing fracturing co... [more]

The Efficiency of a Fence of Tidal Turbines in the Alderney Race: Comparison between Analytical and Numerical Models
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: actuator disk, Alderney Race, blockage, Telemac3D, tidal turbine.
Assessing the efficiency of a tidal turbine array is necessary for adequate device positioning and the reliable evaluation of annual energy production. Array efficiency depends on hydrodynamic characteristics, operating conditions, and blockage effects, and is commonly evaluated by relying on analytical models or more complex numerical simulations. By applying the conservations of mass, momentum, and energy in an idealized flow field, analytical models derive formulations of turbines’ thrust and power as a function of the induction factor (change in the current velocity induced by turbines). This simplified approach also gives a preliminary characterization of the influence of blockage on array efficiency. Numerical models with turbines represented as actuator disks also enable the assessment of the efficiency of a tidal array. We compare here these two approaches, considering the numerical model as a reference as it includes more physics than the analytical models. The actuator disk a... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: health condition, LSTM, offshore wind turbines, wind power prediction.
More accurate wind power prediction (WPP) is of great significance for the operation of electrical power systems, as offshore wind power penetration increases continuously. As the offshore wind turbines (OWT) are a key system in converting offshore wind power into electrical power, maintaining their condition plays a pivotal role in WPP. However, it is seldom considered in traditional WPP. This paper proposes an ultra-short term offshore WPP methodology based on the condition assessment (CA) of OWTs. Firstly, a modified fuzzy comprehensive evaluation (MFCE) based CA of the OWT is presented with a new defined deterioration of indicators calculated by the relative errors. Long short-term memory (LSTM) neural network is introduced to deal with the complicated interactions between the various monitoring data of an OWT and the dynamic marine environment. Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: floating offshore, micro-siting, offshore wind farm, optimal layout, passive yaw control.
This paper presents a novel tool for optimizing floating offshore wind farms based on weathervaning turbines. This solution is grounded on the ability of the assembly (wind turbine plus floater) to self-orientate into the wind direction, as this concept is allowed to freely pivot on a single point. This is a passive yaw potential solution for floating wind farms currently in the demonstration phase. A genetic algorithm is proposed for optimizing the levelised cost of energy by determining the geographical coordinates of the pivot points (i.e., the position over which the assembly can rotate to self-orient to the incoming wind direction). A tailored evaluation module is proposed to take into account the weathervaning motion around the pivot point depending on the incoming wind direction. The results obtained show the suitability of the proposed method to solve the addressed problem under realistic conditions.
