ARIMA Models in Electrical Load Forecasting and Their Robustness to Noise
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: System Identification
Keywords: ARIMA, electricity load, forecasting, model identification, robustness, Simulation, tolerance to noise
The paper addresses the problem of insufficient knowledge on the impact of noise on the auto-regressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) model identification. The work offers a simulation-based solution to the analysis of the tolerance to noise of ARIMA models in electrical load forecasting. In the study, an idealized ARIMA model obtained from real load data of the Polish power system was disturbed by noise of different levels. The model was then re-identified, its parameters were estimated, and new forecasts were calculated. The experiment allowed us to evaluate the robustness of ARIMA models to noise in their ability to predict electrical load time series. It could be concluded that the reaction of the ARIMA model to random disturbances of the modeled time series was relatively weak. The limiting noise level at which the forecasting ability of the model collapsed was determined. The results highlight the key role of the data preprocessing stage in data mining and learning. They cont... [more]

Photovoltaic Power Quality Analysis Based on the Modulation Broadband Mode Decomposition Algorithm
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: System Identification
Keywords: BP neural network, disturbance identification, modulated broadband mode decomposition, photovoltaic power quality, signal feature extraction
The Broadband Mode Decomposition (BMD) method was previously proposed to solve the Gibbs phenomenon that occurs during photovoltaic signal decomposition; its main idea is to build a dictionary which contains signal features, and to search in the dictionary to solve the problem. However, BMD has some shortcomings; especially if the relative bandwidth of the decomposed signal is not small enough, it may treat a square wave signal as several narrowband signals, resulting in a deviation in the decomposition effect. In order to solve the problem of relative bandwidth, the original signal is multiplied by a high-frequency, single-frequency signal, and the wideband signal is processed as an approximate wideband signal. This is the modulation broadband mode decomposition algorithm (MBMD) proposed in this article. In order to further identify and classify the disturbances in the photovoltaic direct current (DC) signal, the experiment uses composite multi-scale fuzzy entropy (CMFE) to calculate... [more]

Behavioral Modeling Paradigm for DC Nanogrid Based Distributed Energy Systems
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: System Identification
Keywords: behavioral modeling, direct current (dc) nanogrid, distributed energy systems, power electronic converters, renewable energy sources, system identification
The remarkable progress of power electronic converters (PEC) technology has led to their increased penetration in distributed energy systems (DES). Particularly, the direct current (dc) nanogrid-based DES embody a variety of sources and loads, connected through a central dc bus. Therefore, PECs are required to be employed as an interface. It would facilitate incorporation of the renewable energy sources and battery storage system into dc nanogrids. However, it is more challenging as the integration of multiple modules may cause instabilities in the overall system dynamics. Future dc nanogrids are envisioned to deploy ready-to-use commercial PEC, for which designers have no insight into their dynamic behavior. Furthermore, the high variability of the operating conditions constitute a new paradigm in dc nanogrids. It exacerbates the dynamic analysis using traditional techniques. Therefore, the current work proposes behavioral modeling to perform system level analysis of a dc nanogrid-bas... [more]

Application of the ARMA Model to Describe and Forecast the Flotation Feed Solids Flow Rate
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: System Identification
Keywords: ARMA model, coal flotation, forecasting, identification
The flow rate of solids is subject to random disturbances of the changing feed and can significantly affect the quantitative and qualitative parameters of the coal flotation products. This quantity can be described as a stochastic process. The paper presents the results of the solids flow rate model for coal flotation identification calculations, treated as a disturbance to the process. This is an innovative approach to modelling those quantitative parameters of the flotation feed that are measurably available and whose random changes have a significant impact on the enhancement process under industrial conditions. These include the volumetric flow rate of the feed and, in particular, concentration of solids in the feed. Therefore, it is suggested that random changes of these two parameters of the feed should be mapped using a model of one quantity—the flow rate of solids. This solution is advantageous because this quantity, as a quantitative parameter of the feed, has a significant im... [more]

Automatic PRPD Image Recognition of Multiple Simultaneous Partial Discharge Sources in On-Line Hydro-Generator Stator Bars
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: System Identification
Keywords: hydro-electric generators, identification of PRPDs with invalid PD source, multiple simultaneous sources, partial discharge recognition, PRPD pattern, separation of multiple PD types
In this study, a methodology for automatic recognition of multiple simultaneous types of partial discharges (PDs) in hydro-generator stator windings was proposed. All the seven PD sources typical in rotating machines were considered, and up to three simultaneous sources could be identified. The functionality of identifying samples with no valid PDs was also incorporated using a new technique. The data set was composed of phase-resolved partial discharge (PRPD) patterns obtained from on-line measurements of hydro-generators. From an input PRPD, noise and interference were removed with an improved version of an image-based denoising algorithm previously proposed by the authors. Then, a novel image-based algorithm that separates partially superposed PD clouds was proposed, by decomposing the input pattern into two sub-PRPDs containing discharges of different natures. From the sub-PRPDs, one extracts features quantifying the PD distribution over amplitudes and the contour of PD clouds. Tho... [more]

Keywords: AHP, Al-Qassim region, GIS, site suitability, solar energy
Many countries have set a goal for a carbon neutral future, and the adoption of solar energy as an alternative energy source to fossil fuel is one of the major measures planned. Yet not all locations are equally suitable for solar energy generation. This is due to uneven solar radiation distribution as well as various environmental factors. A number of studies in the literature have used multicriteria decision analysis (MCDA) to determine the most suitable places to build solar power plants. To the best of our knowledge, no study has addressed the subject of optimal solar plant site identification for the Al-Qassim region, although developing renewable energy in Saudi Arabia has been put on the agenda. This paper developed a spatial MCDA framework catering to the characteristics of the Al-Qassim region. The framework adopts several tools used in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), such as Random Forest (RF) raster classification and model builder. The framework aims to ascertain the... [more]

March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: System Identification
Keywords: dairy industry, Energy Efficiency, waste heat recovery, waste heat survey
Waste heat recovery is considered as one of the most promising options to improve the efficiency and sustainability of industrial processes. Even though industrial waste heat is abundantly available and its utilization is not a new concept, the implementation rate of waste-heat recovery interventions in industrial facilities is still low, due to several real or perceived barriers. Foremost challenges are represented by technical, economic, financial and regulatory factors. An additional prominent barrier lies in the lack or incompleteness of information concerning the material and energy flows within the factories, and the types and characteristics of waste heat sources and possible sinks for their internal or external reuse. With the aim to overcome some of the information barriers and increase the willingness of companies to approach waste heat recovery and reuse, a methodology to map waste heat sources and sinks in industrial processes is proposed in this study. The approach here pr... [more]

Identification of Inter-Turn Short-Circuits in Induction Motor Stator Winding Using Simulated Annealing
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: System Identification
Keywords: Genetic Algorithm, induction motor, simulated annealing, stator winding, turn short-circuit
This paper presents a method of inter-turn short-circuit identification in induction motors during load current variations based on a hybrid analytic approach that combines the genetic algorithm and simulated annealing. With this approach, the essence of the method relies on determining the reference matrices and calculating the distance between the reference matric values and the test matrix. As a whole, it is a novel approach to the process of identifying faults in induction motors. Moreover, applying a discrete optimization algorithm to search for alternative solutions makes it possible to obtain the true minimal values of the matrices in the identification process. The effectiveness of the applied method in the monitoring and identification processes of the inter-turn short-circuit in the early stage of its creation was confirmed in tests carried out for several significant state variables describing physical magnitudes of the selected induction motor model. Impact of Sustainable Development and Environmental Protection on the Volume of Domestic Hard Coal Sales in Poland
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: System Identification
Keywords: ARMAX and ARIMA model, forecasting, identification
The paper presents the results of an analysis of the impact of activities related to the implementation of Poland’s climate policy on the level of demand for hard coal. The authors used sets of indicators built by Eurostat during the analysis. The analysis was based on a set of indicators that had not previously been used for this purpose. The applied ARAMAX model made it possible to study the impact of the presented indicators on the volume of demand for hard coal in Poland. They were introduced to the ARMAX model as explanatory variables. The demand for hard coal in Poland was the dependent variable. The set of indicators was verified, and finally only statistically significant factors were used to build the model. The forecast of the demand for hard coal was made until 2022. It showed that the volume of coal sales would systematically fall as long as factors affecting demand remain constant. However, an additional factor was taken into account in the analysis, namely the increase in... [more]

March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: System Identification
Keywords: equivalent circuit model, extended Kalman filter, extended Rauch–Tung–Striebel smoother, lithium-ion battery, parameter identification, state of charge
The state of charge (SOC) of a lithium battery system is critical since it indicates the remaining operating hours, full charge time, and peak power of the battery. This paper recommends an extended Rauch−Tung−Striebel smoother (ERTSS) for estimating SOC. It is implemented based on an improved equivalent circuit model with hysteresis voltage. The smoothing step of ERTSS will reduce the estimation error further. Additionally, the genetic algorithm (GA) is employed for searching the optimal ERTSS’s smoothing time interval. Various dynamic cell tests are conducted to verify the model’s accuracy and error estimation deviation. The test results demonstrate that ERTSS’s SOC estimation error is limited to 4% with an initial error between −25 ∘C and 45 ∘C and that the root mean square error (RMSE) of ERTSS’s SOC estimation is approximately 5% lower than that of extended Kalman filter (EKF). The ERTSS improves the SOC estimation accuracy at all operating temperatures of batteries.

A Self-Validating Method via the Unification of Multiple Models for Consistent Parameter Identification in PEM Fuel Cells
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: System Identification
Keywords: macro-homogeneous model, semi-empirical model, SP-RCD model, UMDAG
Mathematical models are used for simulating the electrochemical phenomena of proton-exchange-membrane (PEM) fuel cells. They differ in the scale, modeling variables, precision in specific features, and the required parameters. Often, the input parameters are not measurable and need to be estimated by minimizing the error between the model output and experimental data; however, the estimated parameters could differ from one model to another, hence provoking uncertainty about the correct values and the model’s suitability for simulating the real phenomenon. To address these issues, we introduced a self-validating methodology using three different mathematical models: The first set of parameters was estimated with a semi-empirical (SE) model; then, it was used for computing several points of the polarization curve (PC). The SE parameters and points were used to estimate a second set of parameters and to compute a single point of the PC with a macro-homogeneous (MH) model. The parameters a... [more]

March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: System Identification
Keywords: AC fault location, AC fault property identification, multi-terminal HVDC (MTDC) grid, power flow transfer entropy (PFTE)
This paper describes a smart fault tackling strategy based on power flow transfer entropy (PFTE) for AC three-phase-to-ground (TPG) faults in the multi-terminal HVDC (MTDC) wind power integration system. The fault characteristics and transient energy transfer of different positions and properties are analyzed. Then, a double integral discrimination method based on PFTE is proposed to further distinguish the fault property. Considering the power flow balance, an adaptive coordination strategy of wind farms and energy dissipation resistors is proposed to deal with different AC faults. Finally, a smart fault-tackling strategy based on PFTE for AC three-phase-to-ground (TPG) faults in the MTDC wind power integration system is proposed. Under the proposed smart fault-tackling strategy, the MTDC wind power integration system achieves uninterrupted operation during any AC TPG fault at the receiving end. The experiment results confirm the applicability of the proposed fault-tackling strategy.
