Francesco De Bon, Gian Marco Carlan, Enrico Tognella, Abdirisak Ahmed Isse
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: copper catalyst, eATRP, styrene, temporal control
Electrochemically mediated atom transfer radical polymerization (eATRP) of styrene was studied in detail by using CuBr2/TPMA (TPMA = tris(2-pyridylmethyl)amine) as a catalyst. Redox properties of various Cu(II) species were investigated in CH3CN, dimethylformamide (DMF), and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) both in the absence and presence of 50% (v/v) styrene. This investigation together with preliminary eATRP experiments at 80 °C indicated DMF as the best solvent. The effects of catalyst, monomer, and initiator concentrations were also examined. The livingness of the polymerization was studied by chain extension and electrochemical temporal control of polymerization.

Keywords: biomass production, grazer control, long term cultivation, marine microalga, outdoor raceways, photosynthetic efficiency
The goal of this study was to determine the feasibility of the large-scale cultivation of locally isolated Tetraselmis striata in different open ponds in Gran Canaria. The biomass productivities were 24.66 ± 0.53 kgDW in 32 days (28.9 t/ha/year) for 8000 L indoors, 42.32 ± 0.81 kgDW in 43 days (38.8 t/ha/year) for an 8000 L pond outdoors, and 54.9 ± 0.58 kgDW in 28 days (19.6 t/ha/year) for a 45,000 L pond outdoors. The photosynthetic efficiencies were 1.45 ± 0.03% for an 8000 L pond indoors, 1.95 ± 0.04% for 8000 L outdoors. and 1.10 ± 0.01% for a 45,000 L pond outdoors. The selected strain was fast-growing (µ = 0.21 day−1) and could be rapidly scaled up to 45,000 L; it formed healthy cultures that maintained high photosynthetic activity during long-term cultivation and provided stable biomass productivities, able to grow on urea, which acted as a cheap and effective grazer control. The obtained biomass is a good source of proteins and has an FA profile with a high content of some nut... [more]

Keywords: chemometric analysis, droplet microfluidics, Kirchhoff-solver, lab-on-a-chip simulation, laminar flow, microfluidic design automation, microfluidic network solver, microfluidics, pressure-driven flow-control
Reliable operation of lab-on-a-chip systems depends on user-friendly, precise, and predictable fluid management tailored to particular sub-tasks of the microfluidic process protocol and their required sample fluids. Pressure-driven flow control, where the sample fluids are delivered to the chip from pressurized feed vessels, simplifies the fluid management even for multiple fluids. The achieved flow rates depend on the pressure settings, fluid properties, and pressure-throughput characteristics of the complete microfluidic system composed of the chip and the interconnecting tubing. The prediction of the required pressure settings for achieving given flow rates simplifies the control tasks and enables opportunities for automation. In our work, we utilize a fast-running, Kirchhoff-based microfluidic network simulation that solves the complete microfluidic system for in-line prediction of the required pressure settings within less than 200 ms. The appropriateness of and benefits from this... [more]

Keywords: acid gas adsorption process, adaptive lifting wavelet, deep belief network, fault diagnosis, reliability and process safety, Tennessee–Eastman process
Process fault is one of the main reasons that a system may appear unreliable, and it affects the safety of a system. The existence of different degrees of noise in the industry also makes it difficult to extract the effective features of the data for the fault diagnosis method based on deep learning. In order to solve the above problems, this paper improves the deep belief network (DBN) and iterates the optimal penalty term by introducing a penalty factor, avoiding the local optimal situation of a DBN and improving the accuracy of fault diagnosis in order to minimize the impact of noise while improving fault diagnosis and process safety. Using the adaptive noise reduction capability of an adaptive lifting wavelet (ALW), a practical chemical process fault diagnosis model (ALW-DBN) is finally proposed. Then, according to the Tennessee−Eastman (TE) benchmark test process, the ALW-DBN model is compared with other methods, showing that the fault diagnosis performance of the enhanced DBN com... [more]

In this paper, a control strategy combining the feedback linearization theory and sliding mode variable structure theory is proposed to solve various nonlinear factors, uncertainty of external disturbance and high-precision pressure control problems in the Direct-Drive Volume Control (DDVC) electro-hydraulic servo system. The nonlinear mathematical model of the DDVC electro-hydraulic servo system is established, and the nonlinear factors in the system are accurately linearized by the feedback linearization theory. The uncertainty of external disturbance in the system is compensated by the sliding mode control variable structure theory. The feedback-linearized sliding mode control algorithm proposed in this paper is verified using the DDVC electro-hydraulic servo system experimental platform. The experimental results show that, compared with the classical PID control, the proposed control algorithm can effectively improve the pressure output precision, as well as the dynamic response ch... Keywords: Andrews plot, fault diagnosis, neural networks
This paper proposes a neural network-based process fault diagnosis system with Andrews plot for information pre-processing to enhance the performance of online process fault diagnosis. By using features extracted from Andrews plot as the inputs to a neural network, as a classifier, the diagnosis speed and reliability are improved. A method for determining the important features in the Andrews function is proposed. The proposed fault diagnosis system is applied to a simulated continuous stirred tank reactor process and is compared with two conventional neural network-based fault diagnosis systems: scheme B where the monitored measurements are directly fed to a neural network after scaling and scheme C where the monitored measurements are converted to qualitative trend data before feeding to a neural network. Of all the considered faults, the proposed fault diagnosis system diagnosed the abrupt faults on average 5.45 s and 2.66 s earlier than schemes B and C, respectively and diagnosed t... [more]

Keywords: microcellular foam, supercritical CO2, thermoplastic polyurethane 70A
In this study, a case study to produce microcellular foam of a commercial thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) through the supercritical carbon dioxide (CO2) foaming process is presented. To explore the feasibility of TPU in medical device and biomedical application, a soft TPU with Shore hardness value of 70A was selected as the model compound. The effects of saturation temperature and saturation pressure ranging from 90 to 140 °C and 90 to 110 bar on the expansion ratio, cell size and cell density of the TPU foam were compared and discussed. Regarding the expansion ratio, the effect of saturation temperature was considerable and an intermediate saturation temperature of 100 °C was favorable to produce TPU microcellular foam with a high expansion ratio. On the other hand, the mean pore size and cell density of TPU foam can be efficiently manipulated by adjusting the saturation pressure. A high saturation pressure was beneficial to obtain TPU foam with small mean pore size and high cell de... [more]

Keywords: calibration, field-portable technology, gold, waste mobile phones, X-ray fluorescence
Quantitative determination of most economic valuable metals in waste is the first fundamental operation of evaluating the feasibility of recycling processes. Field-portable X-ray fluorescence spectrometers (FPXRFs) represent a more practical, efficient, and economic tool in determining the elemental composition of samples with respect to conventional analytical techniques, such as atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS) and inductively coupled plasma emission spectrometry (ICP). In this paper, quick and smart determination of gold content in printed circuit boards (PCBs) of waste mobile phones was studied. The aim of the research was to combine the practicality of FPXRFs with the reliability of quantitative spectrometry analysis and evaluate the error between the two techniques. Several samples (33) of PCBs were ground to a size below 0.5 mm, and then, the powders were analyzed by FPXRFs at different acquisition times with five replications for each sample. The same analyzed samples then... [more]

Keywords: continuous pharmaceutical manufacturing, glidant effects, Model Predictive Control, plant-model mismatch, quality-by-control (QbC), state estimation
The transition from batch to continuous processes in the pharmaceutical industry has been driven by the potential improvement in process controllability, product quality homogeneity, and reduction of material inventory. A quality-by-control (QbC) approach has been implemented in a variety of pharmaceutical product manufacturing modalities to increase product quality through a three-level hierarchical control structure. In the implementation of the QbC approach it is common practice to simplify control algorithms by utilizing linearized models with constant model parameters. Nonlinear model predictive control (NMPC) can effectively deliver control functionality for highly sensitive variations and nonlinear multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) systems, which is essential for the highly regulated pharmaceutical manufacturing industry. This work focuses on developing and implementing NMPC in continuous manufacturing of solid dosage forms. To mitigate control degradation caused by plant-mo... [more]

Keywords: approximation methods, fuzzy control, microcontroller, mobile robot, position control
The main contribution of the paper is the simplification of the computational process of fuzzy control of a mobile robot controlled by a microcontroller. We present a way to implement this control method with a reduced computation time of control actions and memory demand. Our way to accomplish this, was to replace the fuzzy controller with the approximation of its resulting control surfaces. In the paper, we use the previously presented approximation by the table and describe other methods of approximation of the control area through polynomial and exponential function. We tested all approximation methods in simulations and with a real mobile robot. Based on the measured trajectory of the EN20 mobile robot, we found that approximation through the table is the most accurate in terms of the fuzzy surface but delivers noticeable oscillations of mobile robot control in real conditions. Polynomial and exponential functions fuzzy surface approximations were less accurate than the table, but... [more]

Wafer direct bonding is an attractive approach to manufacture future micro-electro-mechanical system (MEMS) and microelectronic and optoelectronic devices. In this paper, a combined hydrophilic activated Si/Si wafer direct bonding process based on wet chemical activation and O2 plasma activation is explored. Additionally, the effect on bonding interface characteristics is comprehensively investigated. The mechanism is proposed to better understand the nature of hydrophilic bonding. The water molecule management is controlled by O2 plasma activation process. According to the contact angle measurement and FTIR spectrum analysis, it can be concluded that water molecules play an important role in the type and density of chemical bonds at the bonding interface, which influence both bonding strength and voids’ characteristics. When annealed at 350 °C, a high bonding strength of more than 18.58 MPa is obtained by tensile pulling test. Cross sectional SEM and TEM images show a defect-free and... [more]

Keywords: autonomous surface vessel (ASV), formation control, isosceles triangle (ISOT), swarm operation, virtual leader vessel, virtual matrix approach
The formation control for the effective operation of multiple vessels is discussed. First, a virtual matrix approach is proposed to improve the formation robustness and transform performance during swarm operations, which is created based on the virtual leader vessel location, and agents composing the formation follow cells in the matrix to maintain formation. This approach is affected by the virtual leader vessel location. The virtual leader vessel location is defined by two cases: matrix center and geometric center; furthermore, robustness and efficiency comparison simulations are performed. The simulation results show that in most formations, the geometric center is better in terms of efficiency and robustness. Second, the isosceles triangle guidance algorithm is proposed to improve the “go-back behavior” of certain agents during excessive maneuvering. Through a waypoint-following simulation, the algorithm is confirmed to be superior to the line-of-sight guidance algorithm. The swar... [more]

Keywords: additive manufacturing, feedback control, manufacturing process, melt pool area, selective laser melting
Selective laser melting (SLM), a metal powder fusion additive manufacturing process, has the potential to manufacture complex components for aerospace and biomedical implants. Large-scale adaptation of these technologies is hampered due to the presence of defects such as porosity and part distortion. Nonuniform melt pool size is a major cause of these defects. The melt pool size changes due to heat from the previous powder bed tracks. In this work, the effect of heat sourced from neighbouring tracks was modelled and feedback control was designed. The objective of control is to regulate the melt pool cross-sectional area rejecting the effect of heat from neighbouring tracks within a layer of the powder bed. The SLM process’s thermal model was developed using the energy balance of lumped melt pool volume. The disturbing heat from neighbouring tracks was modelled as the initial temperature of the melt pool. Combining the thermal model with disturbance model resulted in a nonlinear model d... [more]

Keywords: DVR, H-bridge, voltage sag, voltage swell
In this paper, the compensation of voltage sags and swells using a dynamic voltage restorer (DVR) based on a bi-directional AC/AC converter is presented for stabilizing single-phase AC line voltage. The H-bridge AC/AC converter with bi-directional switches and without bulk capacitor is adopted as the power topology of the proposed system. The proposed novel topology of DVR is adopted to compensate both voltage sag and swell conditions. Additionally, the power factor is closed to unity because a bulk capacitor is not required. The inner and outer loop control is proposed to improve the response with gain scaling; gain control is adopted to reduce the overshoot. Finally, a 2 kVA prototype has been implemented to verify the performance and accuracy of the control method for the DVR system. The peak efficiency of the system is up to 94%, and it can compensate 50% voltage swells and 25% voltage sags.

Keywords: estimated compensation, Fuzzy-PID-Smith algorithm, integration of water and fertilizer, pH regulation, process control, time lag
An appropriate pH value of liquid fertilizer can enable crops to better absorb nutrients from fertilizers. However, the mixed liquid fertilizer with high concentration of liquid fertilizer and irrigation water has a high pH value, which affects the absorption of nutrients by crops. Therefore, the precise regulation of liquid fertilizer pH value is an important link to realize the integration of water and fertilizer in modern agriculture. Due to pipeline transportation and diffusion of the regulating liquid and liquid fertilizer, the pH value control system has the characteristics of time-varying, non-linear and time-delayed models, and it is difficult for ordinary controllers to accurately control the pH value of liquid fertilizer. Therefore, modern agriculture urgently needs a controller that can adapt to non-linear and uncertain systems. According to the characteristics of the pH regulation process of liquid fertilizer, this study proposes and designs a modified fuzzy-PID-Smith predi... [more]

Future energy systems must mainly generate electricity from renewable resources. To deal with the fluctuating availability of wind and solar power, new versatile electricity markets and sustainable solutions concentrating on energy flexibility are needed. In this research, we investigated the potential of energy flexibility achieved through demand-side response for the wastewater treatment plant of the Benchmark Simulation Model 1. First, seven control strategies were simulated and assessed. Next, the flexibility calls were identified, two energy flexibility scenarios were defined and incorporated into the model, and the control strategies were evaluated anew. In this research, the effluent ammonia concentration needed to be maintained within the limits for as long as possible. Strategy 5, which controlled ammonia in Tank 5 at a low value and did not control any nitrate in Tank 2, of Scenario 1, which was characterized by an undetermined on/off aeration cycle, was then found to be the... Keywords: composting, gaseous emissions, mitigation strategies, organic wastes
Organic waste generation, collection, and management have become a crucial problem in modern and developing societies. Among the technologies proposed in a circular economy and sustainability framework, composting has reached a strong relevance in terms of clean technology that permits reintroducing organic matter to the systems. However, composting has also negative environmental impacts, some of them of social concern. This is the case of composting atmospheric emissions, especially in the case of greenhouse gases (GHG) and certain families of volatile organic compounds (VOC). They should be taken into account in any environmental assessment of composting as organic waste management technology. This review presents the relationship between composting operation and composting gaseous emissions, in addition to typical emission values for the main organic wastes that are being composted. Some novel mitigation technologies to reduce gaseous emissions from composting are also presented (u... [more]
Robust Detection of Minute Faults in Uncertain Systems Using Energy Activity

Keywords: bond graph, energy activity, Fault Detection
Fault detection is one of the key steps in Fault Detection and Isolation (FDI) and, therefore, critical for subsequent prognosis or implementation of Fault Tolerant Control (FTC). It is, therefore, advisable to utilize detection algorithms which are quick and can detect the smallest faults. Model-based detection methods satisfy both these criteria and should be preferred. However, a big limitation for model-based methods is that they require the accurate value of the component parameters, which is difficult to obtain in real situations. This limits the accuracy of model-based methods. This paper proposes a new method for fault detection using Energy Activity (EA) which can detect minute levels of fault in systems with high component uncertainty. Different forms of EA are developed for use as an FDI metric. The proposed forms are simulated using a two-tank system under various types of faults. The results are compared with each other and with the traditional model-based FDI method using... [more]

February 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Model Predictive Control, nonlinear system, offset-free control, partial least square
A nonlinear offset-free model predictive control based on a dynamic partial least square (PLS) framework is proposed in this paper. A multi-output multi-input system is projected into latent variable space by a PLS outer model. For each latent variable model, the T−S fuzzy model is used to describe the nonlinear characteristics of the system; while the state-space model is used in T−S fuzzy model consequent parameters to describe the dynamic characteristics. A disturbance model is introduced in the state-space model. For model state variables, a state observer is used to compensate for the mismatch of the model. The case study results for the pH neutralization process show that the MPC controller based on this method can guarantee the tracking performance of the nonlinear system without static error.
Application of Copper as Stabiliser in Aluminium Assisted Transfer of Titanium in Submerged Arc Welding of Carbon Steel
Theresa Coetsee, Frederik De Bruin
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: aluminium, copper, metal powder, oxygen potential, submerged arc welding, titanium
The element transfer of Ti from molten flux to the weld metal is limited to less than 310 ppm Ti in the submerged arc welding of carbon steel. This limitation is due to the high oxygen partial pressure prevailing at the molten flux-weld pool interface. Our previous study illustrated that the use of Al powder in combination with Ti powder improves the transfer of Ti to the weld metal to 4% Ti, whilst maintaining 509 ppm O in the weld metal. The weld metal ppm O should be controlled at 200 to 500 ppm O to maintain weld metal toughness. In this study, the addition of Cu powder with Ti and Al powder is applied to illustrate the stabiliser effect of Cu in the weld pool. The role of Cu as weld pool stabiliser is due to its decrease of the temperature required to melt Ti into the weld pool, so increasing the quantity of metal powder melted into the weld pool. The weld metal composition improved to 5.1% Ti, 3.6% Cu, and 371 ppm O. Thus, the role of Al in controlling the partial oxygen pressure... [more]

Keywords: convolutional neural network, fault diagnosis, generative adversarial networks, imbalance data
In practical industrial application, the fault samples collected from rotating machinery are frequently unbalanced, which will create difficulties when it comes to diagnosis. Besides, the variation of working conditions and noise factors will further reduce the diagnosis’s accuracy and stability. Considering the above problems, we established a model based on deep Wasserstein generative adversarial network with gradient penalty (DWGANGP). In this model, the unbalanced fault data set will first be trained by the sample generation network to generate synthetic samples, which will be used to restore the balance. A one-dimensional convolutional neural network with a specific structure is then used as the fault diagnosis network to classify the reconstructed equilibrium samples. The experimental results show that the proposed sample generation network can generate high-quality synthetic samples under highly imbalanced data, and the diagnostic network has a fast training convergence. Keywords: compost, leachate, olive mill wastewater, phosphate sludge, physicochemical and microbiological analyzes, sugar lime sludge
The percolation of rainwater and runoff water through household waste in the dumpsite generally leads to an overabundance of leachate in Moroccan landfills, which is a source of soil, surface water and groundwater contamination. In order to ecologically solve the problem posed by the leachate in the dump site, to safeguard the environment and to contribute to sustainable development, we have carried out this study which aims to study the possibility of composting leachate with green waste and phosphate washing sludge. Various combinations with five substrates (leachate, green waste, sugar lime sludge, phosphate washing sludge and olive mill wastewater) in different proportions were used to build five windrows. A 24 h contact between the phosphate sludge or sugar lime sludge and the leachate took place prior to the addition of the green waste for the construction of the different windrows. This contact time ensured the absorption of a significant portion of the leachate and the disappea... [more]

Keywords: digital hydraulic technology, high-speed on/off valve, open–close characteristics, pulse voltage duration, screw-in cartridge valve
The hydraulic high-speed on/off valve (HSV)—the critical core component of digital hydraulic technology—has a special structural design and manufacture due to its fast opening and closing, which results in high prices and maintenance costs. The solenoid screw-in cartridge valve (SCV) is widely used in the hydraulic industry because of its merits, such as mature technology, reliable quality, and low cost. The contribution of this study is to replace the high-speed on/off valve with the SCV in some areas of application by introducing positive and negative pulse voltage control for the coil of the SCV, which only modifies the control circuit and needs no change in structure. Based on the analysis of the structure of the SCV, the simulation model was developed in AMESim and validated by experiments to investigate the effects of the pulse voltage duration on the open−close dynamic characteristics and find the optimal pulse voltage duration, so that the SCV can open or close in the shortest... Keywords: diffusion rate, dynamic pricing, exclusive brand, historical transaction price, internal reference price
When information regarding the effective evaluation of the value of exquisite products is lacking, the market demand function for such products at a given time point is affected by the diffusion of historical transaction price information before the time point. This is because historical transaction prices play an active role in influencing the internal reference price (IRP) of customers, and the continuous diffusion of historical transaction price information leads to the continuous correction, adjustment, and updating of customers’ IRPs. Given the varying rates of such information diffusion, the speed at which customers adjust their IRPs also varies across individuals and contexts. By considering the exponential distribution of potential customers’ IRPs as an example to establish the dynamic demand function that considers the effect of historical transaction prices, this paper discusses the effect of different information diffusion rates on the demand function at a time point.
