Unbalanced Current Reduction Method of Microgrid Based on Power Conversion System Operation
Hyun Shin, Sang Heon Chae, Eel-Hwan Kim
April 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: dual current control, ESS, microgrid, PSCAD/EMTDC, redundancy
In isolated areas such as islands with small power grids, the BESS (Battery energy storage system) can supply the standard voltage and frequency to the power system to achieve 100% of renewable sharing. In addition, the installation of additional BESS may be required in the microgrid due to technical limitations such as redundant operation and manufacturer specifications. Thus, the BESSs in a microgrid can be split into main and sub BESSs which play a role as the main source and auxiliary services, respectively. Generally, the ratio of unbalance current in microgrid system tends to be high, because of inherently unbalanced single phase load distribution. However, because the capacity of BESS is calculated under balanced conditions, the PCS (Power conversion system) of BESS may stop protecting its switching device from a single phase overcurrent in actual operation. From this perspective, this paper proposes that the sub BESSs perform dual current control to supply the unbalanced curren... [more]

Keywords: artificial lighting, comfort, control strategies, daylight, Energy Efficiency, office buildings, user-centered systems
A significant proportion of the total energy consumption in office buildings is attributable to lighting. Enhancements in energy efficiency are currently achieved through strategies to reduce artificial lighting by intelligent daylight utilization. Control strategies in the field of daylighting and artificial lighting are mostly rule-based and focus either on comfort aspects or energy objectives. This paper aims to provide an overview of published scientific literature on enhanced control strategies, in which new control approaches are critically analysed regarding the fulfilment of energy efficiency targets and comfort criteria simultaneously. For this purpose, subject-specific review articles from the period between 2015 and 2020 and their research sources from as far back as 1978 are analysed. Results show clearly that building controls increasingly need to address multiple trades to achieve a maximum improvement in user comfort and energy efficiency. User acceptance can be highligh... April 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: advanced MCR, CBDT, control room, diagnosis, human failure event, human reliability
Advancements in the nuclear industry have led to the development of fully digitized main control rooms (MCRs)—often termed advanced MCRs—for newly built nuclear power plants (NPPs). Diagnosis is a major part of the cognitive activity in NPP MCRs. Advanced MCRs are expected to improve the working environment and reduce human error, especially during the diagnosis of unexpected scenarios. However, with the introduction of new types of tasks and errors by digital MCRs, a new method to analyze the diagnosis errors in these new types of MCRs is required. Task analysis for operator diagnosis in an advanced MCR based on emergency operation was performed to determine the error modes. The cause-based decision tree (CBDT) method—originally developed for analog control rooms—was then revised to a modified CBDT (MCBDT) based on the error mode categorizations. This work examines the possible adoption of the MCBDT method for the evaluation of diagnosis errors in advanced MCRs. We have also provided... [more]
New Time-Varying Sliding Surface for Switching Type Quasi-Sliding Mode Control

April 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: control design, discrete-time systems, disturbance compensation, reaching law approach, sliding mode control, trajectory generator
This study considers the problem of energetical efficiency in switching type sliding mode control of discrete-time systems. The aim of this work is to reduce the quasi-sliding mode band-width and, as follows, the necessary control input, through an application of a new type of time-varying sliding hyperplane in quasi-sliding mode control of sampled time systems. Although time-varying sliding hyperplanes are well known to provide insensitivity to matched external disturbances and uncertainties of the model in the whole range of motion for continuous-time systems, their application in the discrete-time case has never been studied in detail. Therefore, this paper proposes a sliding surface, which crosses the system’s representative point at the initial step and then shifts in the state space according to the pre-generated demand profile of the sliding variable. Next, a controller for a real perturbed plant is designed so that it drives the system’s representative point to its reference po... [more]
Adaptive On-Time Buck Converter with Wave Tracking Reference Control for Output Regulation Accuracy
Pang-Jung Liu, Mao-Hui Kuo
April 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: buck converter, constant on-time, efficiency, output DC offset
A ripple-based constant on-time (RBCOT) buck converter with a virtual inductor current ripple (VICR) control can relax the stability constraint of large equivalent series resistance (ESR) at an output capacitor, but output regulation accuracy deteriorates due to the issue with output DC offset. Thus, this paper proposes a wave tracking reference (WTR) control to improve converter stability with low ESR and concurrently eliminate output DC offset on the regulated output voltage. Moreover, an adaptive on-time (AOT) circuit is presented to suppress the switching frequency variation with load current changes in continuous conduction mode. A prototype chip was fabricated in 0.35 µm CMOS technology for validation. The measurement results demonstrate that the maximum output DC offset is 4.1 mV and the output voltage ripple is as small as 3 mV. Furthermore, the switching frequency variation with the AOT circuit is 11 kHz when load current changes from 50 mA to 500 mA, and the measured maximum... [more]

Keywords: ash content, calorific value, moisture content, particle size distribution
The research was conducted with the goal to determine the variability of the quality parameters of the wood chips produced from the most favorable raw material (energy roundwood), and in the most controllable operational conditions (pellet factory), as the first step in identifying opportunities to optimize the wood chips’ quality monitoring. Four raw material types were tested: fir/spruce and beech debarked energy roundwood, as well as energy wood with bark of the same species. Sampling was conducted during six consecutive months along with laboratory testing, all according to the HRN EN ISO standards for solid biofuels. Interpretation of the results was done in relation to deviation from the first sampling results (as an indicator of the possibility to retain the quality of wood chips), and repeatability and reproducibility set in the standards (as an indicator of acceptable variability). The influence of the species and debarking process on the wood chips’ quality was analyzed as we... [more]

April 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: DC network, diode rectifier, HVDC transmission, modular multilevel converter, offshore oil/gas platform, offshore production, offshore wind power
A diode rectifier-modular multilevel converter AC/DC hub (DR-MMC Hub) is proposed to integrate offshore wind power to the onshore DC network and offshore production platforms (e.g., oil/gas and hydrogen production plants) with different DC voltage levels. The DR and MMCs are connected in parallel at the offshore AC collection network to integrate offshore wind power, and in series at the DC terminals of the offshore production platform and the onshore DC network. Compared with conventional parallel-connected DR-MMC HVDC systems, the proposed DR-MMC hub reduces the required MMC converter rating, leading to lower investment cost and power loss. System control of the DR-MMC AC/DC hub is designed based on the operation requirements of the offshore production platform, considering different control modes (power control or DC voltage control). System behaviors and requirements during AC and DC faults are investigated, and hybrid MMCs with half-bridge and full-bridge sub-modules (HBSMs and FB... [more]

Keywords: concentrated solar heat, concentrated solar thermal, control strategy, flexible heat integration, MILP, operating temperature optimization, process heat, SHIP, SIPH, system modelling
Using solar power for industrial process heat is an increasing trend to fight against climate change thanks to renewable heat. Process heat demand and solar flux can both present intermittency issues in industrial systems, therefore solar systems with storage introduce a degree of freedom on which optimization, on a mathematical basis, can be performed. As the efficiency of solar thermal receivers varies as a function of temperature and solar flux, it seems natural to consider an optimization on the operating temperature of the solar field. In this paper, a Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) algorithm is developed to optimize the operating temperature in a system consisting of a concentrated solar thermal field with storage, hybridized with a boiler. The MILP algorithm optimizes the control trajectory on a time horizon of 48 h in order to minimize boiler use. Objective function corresponds to the boiler use, for completion of the heat from the solar field, whereas the linear const... [more]

April 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: demand response, elasticity, electric vehicle charging, indirect control, Optimization
The increasing demand for Electric Vehicle (EV) charging is putting pressure on the power grids and capacities of charging stations. This work focuses on how to use indirect control through price signals to level out the load curve in order to avoid the power consumption from exceeding these capacities. We propose mathematical programming models for the indirect control of EV charging that aim at finding an optimal set of price signals to be sent to the drivers based on price elasticities. The objective is to satisfy the demand for a given price structure, or minimize the curtailment of loads, when there is a shortage of capacity. The key contribution is the use of elasticity matrices through which it is possible to estimate the EV drivers’ reactions to the price signals. As real-world data on relating the elasticity values to the EV driver’s behaviour are currently non-existent, we concentrate on sensitivity analysis to test how different assumptions on elasticities affect the optimal... Keywords: input filter resonance suppression, Model Predictive Control, two-stage matrix converter, vector synthesis, zero-current switching strategy
This paper proposes a novel model predictive current control scheme for two-stage matrix converter. The switching frequency is kept constant by fixing the switching instant. The control strategy achieves to control source reactive power in the input side and output currents in the output side. In addition, the advantage of the proposed strategy compared with conventional model predictive control is firstly proved using the principle of vector synthesis and the law of sines in the vector distribution area. Moreover, a zero-current switching sequence is proposed and implemented to insure zero-current switching operations and reduce the switching losses. Furthermore, in order to suppress the input filter resonance, which is easier to be inspired by the model predictive control, compared with traditional control strategies, an innovative active damping technique is proposed and implemented. Finally, both simulation and experiment are implemented to verify the performance of the proposed st... [more]

Keywords: climatic chamber, positive-displacement compressor, sliding-vane compressor, transient behavior, transport sector
Compressed air is crucial on an electric or electrified heavy-duty vehicle. The objective of this work was to experimentally determine the performance parameters of the first prototype of an electric-driven sliding-vane air compressor, specifically designed for electric and electrified heavy-duty vehicles, during the transient conditions of cold start-ups. The transient was analyzed for different thermostatic temperatures: 0 °C, −10 °C, −20 °C, and −30 °C. The air compressor unit was placed in a climatic chamber and connected to the electric grid, the water-cooling loop, and the compressed air measuring and controlling rig. The required start-up time was greater the lower the thermostatic temperature, ranging from 30 min at 0 °C to 221 min at −30 °C and depending largely on the volume of the lubricant oil filled initially. The volume flow rate of the compressed air was lower than nominal at the beginning, but it showed a step increase well beyond nominal when the oil reached 50 °C and... [more]

The household sector in Poland consumes more than 25% of final energy. At the same time, residents reported dissatisfaction with the thermal conditions during the summer months. This paper details the search for passive and energy-efficient solutions to improve thermal comfort in Polish dwellings. A five-story, multi-family building was selected for this research. Analyses were conducted in apartments located on the top two floors using EnergyPlus (for thermal calculations) and CONTAM (for air exchange calculations) simulation programs for current and future climatic conditions. The stochastic behavior of people when opening windows and automatically controlled systems supplying external air to the building was considered. Airing the apartments by opening windows increased the heating demand but reduced the number of thermal discomfort hours by over 90%. The degree of airing by opening windows depends on residents opening their windows; therefore, a mechanical supply of external air co... [more]

Keywords: dynamic weight coefficient, multi-objective model predictive control, permanent magnet synchronous generators, virtual inertia
In the case of a high penetration rate of wind energy conversion systems, the conventional virtual inertia control of permanent magnet synchronous generators (PMSG) has an insufficient support capability for system frequency, leading to an unstable system frequency and a slower response. Considering the finite control set model predictive control has multi-objective regulation capabilities and efficient tracking capabilities, and an improved multi-objective model-predictive control is proposed in this paper for PMSG-based wind turbines with virtual inertia based on its mathematical model. With the prediction model, the optimal control of the current and the frequency of the PMSG-based wind turbines can be obtained. Since the shaft torque changes rapidly under high virtual inertia, shaft oscillation may occur under this scenario. To address this problem, the electromagnetic torque is set as an additional optimization objective, which effectively suppresses the oscillation. Furthermore,... [more]
A New Model Predictive Control Method for Eliminating Hydraulic Oscillation and Dynamic Hydraulic Imbalance in a Complex Chilled Water System

Keywords: chilled water system, high-rise building, hydraulic oscillation, Model Predictive Control, pipe network
To enhance the energy performance of a central air-conditioning system, an effective control method for the chilled water system is always essential. However, it is a real challenge to distribute exact cooling energy to multiple terminal units in different floors via a complex chilled water network. To mitigate hydraulic imbalance in a complex chilled water system, many throttle valves and variable-speed pumps are installed, which are usually regulated by PID-based controllers. Due to the severe hydraulic coupling among the valves and pumps, the hydraulic oscillation phenomena often occur while using those feedback-based controllers. Based on a data-calibrated water distribution model which can accurately predict the hydraulic behaviors of a chilled water system, a new Model Predictive Control (MPC) method is proposed in this study. The proposed method is validated by a real-life chilled water system in a 22-floor hotel. By the proposed method, the valves and pumps can be regulated saf... [more]

Keywords: cascaded gate drivers, decentralized control, distributed galvanic insulation (DGI), modular multilevel converter (MMC), smart gate-drivers, voltage balancing algorithm (VBA)
Recent Modular Multilevel Converter (MMC) topology allows for drastic improvements in power electronic conversion such as higher energy quality, lower power semiconductors electrical stress, decreased Electro-Magnetic Interferences (EMI), and reduced switching losses. MMC is widely used in High Voltage Direct-Current (HVDC) transmissions as it offers, theoretically, no voltage limit. However, its control electronic structure is not modular itself. Especially, the insulation voltage between the submodule gate drivers’ primaries and secondaries depends on the number of submodules. The converter voltage levels cannot be increased without designing all gate driver isolations again. To solve that issue, the novel concept of distributed galvanic insulation is introduced for multilevel converters. The submodule’s gate drivers are daisy-chained, which naturally reduces the insulation voltage to the submodule capacitor voltage, regardless of the number of submodules. The MMC becomes truly modul... [more]

Keywords: chilled water temperature, data center, energy cut-off, HVAC, water-side economizer
The degree of integration of IT devices and consumption of cooling energy are consistently increasing owing to developments in the data center industry. Hence, to ensure the smooth operation and fault prevention of IT devices, the energy consumption of cooling systems has increased, leading to active research on improvements in cooling system performance for reducing energy consumption. This study examines the reduction in cooling energy consumption using a simulation by applying chilled water control and a water-side economizer (WSE) system to enhance the cooling system efficiency. The simulation results showed that the energy consumption was reduced by 1.8% when the chilled water temperature was set to 11 °C in a conventional system and by up to 19.6% when WSE was also applied. Furthermore, when the changes in chilled water temperature were applied for efficient operation of WSE, the energy consumption was reduced by up to 30.1% compared to that in conventional energy systems.

April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: autonomous optimization, demand response, Energy Storage, power tracking, real-time pricing
In the regime of incentive-based autonomous demand response, time dependent prices are typically used to serve as signals from a system operator to consumers. However, this approach has been shown to be problematic from various perspectives. We clarify these shortcomings in a geometric way and thereby motivate the use of power signals instead of price signals. The main contribution of this paper consists of demonstrating in a standard setting that power tracking signals can control flexibilities more efficiently than real-time price signals. For comparison by simulation, German renewable energy production and German standard load profiles are used for daily production and demand profiles, respectively. As for flexibility, an energy storage system with realistic efficiencies is considered. Most critically, the new approach is able to induce consumptions on the demand side that real-time pricing is unable to induce. Moreover, the pricing approach is outperformed with regards to imbalance... [more]

April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: induction motor, matrix converter, power factor, reactive power
In this paper, a novel approach to matrix-converter-based variable frequency drives is presented. It is proposed that these drives are used to provide or draw out reactive power from the power distribution line, keeping the power factor close to unit and, simultaneously, performing their primary function of motor powering and speed control. This application of matrix-converter-based variable frequency drives is required due to the need to compensate for capacitive reactive power generated by light emitting diode lighting devices. In this study, the reactive power compensation range of the matrix-converter-based variable frequency drive is determined, and a method is proposed to extend the compensation range.

Keywords: drive energy consumption, EV powertrain, genetic algorithms, induction machine drive, linear parameter varying control
Automotive applications often experience conflicting-objective optimization problems focusing on performance parameters that are catered through precisely developed cost functions. Two such conflicting objectives which substantially affect the working of traction machine drive are maximizing its speed performance and minimizing its energy consumption. In case of an electric vehicle (EV) powertrain, drive energy is bounded by battery dynamics (charging and capacity) which depend on the consumption of drive voltage and current caused by driving cycle schedules, traffic state, EV loading, and drive temperature. In other words, battery consumption of an EV depends upon its drive energy consumption. A conventional control technique improves the speed performance of EV at the cost of its drive energy consumption. However, the proposed optimized energy control (OEC) scheme optimizes this energy consumption by using robust linear parameter varying (LPV) control tuned by genetic algorithms whic... [more]

Keywords: bus section, hierarchical control, hybrid AC/DC microgrid, multimode operation, seamless mode switching
In the last several years, the coordination control of hybrid AC/DC microgrids (HMGs) has been gaining increasingly more attention. However, most of these discussions are focused on single-bus HMGs whose AC or DC bus is not sectionalized by AC or DC breakers. Compared with these single-bus HMGs, the bus-sectionalized HMG has more flexible topologies, more diverse operation modes, and consequently higher service reliability. However, meanwhile, these benefits also bring challenges to the stable operation of bus-sectionalized HMGs, particularly for mode switching. Relying on the national HMG demonstrative project in Shaoxing, China, this paper makes efforts to present the hierarchical control paradigm of a typical bus-sectionalized HMG toward standardization. The test results demonstrate that the proposed system provides seamless switching and uninterrupted power supply without controller reconfiguration among different operation modes. The operational data are also brought forth and ana... [more]

Keywords: dynamic programming, electrified powertrain, energy management strategy, hybrid vehicles, look-ahead control, optimal control, receding horizon
Fuel consumption and emissions in parallel hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) are directly linked to the way the load request to the wheels is managed between the internal combustion engine and the electric motor powered by the battery. A significant reduction in both consumption and emissions can be achieved by optimally controlling the power split on an entire driving mission (full horizon—FH). However, the entire driving path is often not predictable in real applications, hindering the fulfillment of the advantages gained through such an approach. An improvement can be achieved by exploiting more information available onboard, such as those derived from Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) and vehicle connectivity (V2X). With this aim, the present work presents the design and verification, in a simulated environment, of an optimized controller for HEVs energy management, based on dynamic programming (DP) and receding horizon (RH) approaches. The control algorithm entails the parti... [more]

Keywords: fast frequency reserve, frequency controller, frequency stability, hybrid wind power plants, supercapacitors, system inertia
The concept of hybrid wind power plants (HWPPs) that consist of wind, solar and batteries has received a lot of attention, since HWPPs provide a number of advantages thanks to the complementary nature of wind and solar energy and the flexibility of batteries. Nevertheless, converter-based technologies, as interfaces of HWPPs to the utility grid, contribute to the reduction of total system inertia, making the system more volatile and creating additional threats to frequency stability. To address these operational challenges, the capability of supercapacitors (SCs) to provide fast frequency reserve (FFR) is explored in this paper to enhance the frequency response of the HWPP. Two topologies for integrating SCs into the HWPP are proposed: (1) connecting SC to the DC link of wind turbine (WT) via a DC-DC converter interface, (2) directly connecting SC to the DC link of WT without converter interface. Frequency controllers at the asset level are proposed for these two topologies accordingly... [more]
