Fuzzy Adaptive Type II Controller for Two-Mass System
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: adaptation process, fuzzy controller, membership functions, MRAS, Petri layer, type 2 fuzzy sets, type II fuzzy functions.
This paper presents original concepts of control systems for an electrical drive with an elastic mechanical coupling between the motor and the driven mechanism. The synthesis procedure of the speed controller uses a proposed quality index (cost function) of system operation ensures the minimization of both tracking errors and torsional vibrations. Proper selection of the cost function focusses more on the reduction of torsional vibrations due to their negative influence on the drive’s mechanical coupling vitality. The omission of the plant identification of an adaptive fuzzy controller was proposed. Two types of fuzzy controllers were analyzed, namely with type I and type II fuzzy membership functions. The novelty of the presented approach is in the application of a Petri transition layer in a type II fuzzy controller which reduces the numerical complexity in case of a large number of complicated type II fuzzy sets. The presented simulation and experimental results prove that the best... [more]

Performance Comparison of Control Strategies for Plant-Wide Produced Water Treatment
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: deoiling, grey-box modeling, hydrocyclone, Model Predictive Control, oil and gas, robust control, separation.
Offshore produced water treatment (PWT) accounts for cleaning the largest waste stream in the offshore oil and gas industry. If this separation process is not properly executed, large amounts of oil are often directly discharged into the ocean. This work extends two grey-box models of a three-phase gravity separator and a deoiling hydrocyclone, and combines them into a single plant-wide model for testing PWT control solutions in a typical process configuration. In simulations, three known control solutions—proportional-integral-derivative (PID) control, H∞ control, and model predictive control (MPC)—are compared on the combined model to evaluate the separation performance. The results of the simulations clearly show what performance metrics each controller excels at, such as valve wear, oil discharge, oil-in-water (OiW) concentration variance, and constraint violations. The work incentivizes future control to be based on operational policy, such as defining boundary constraints and wei... [more]

Neutronic Analysis of Start-Up Tests at China Experimental Fast Reactor
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: CEFR, Monte Carlo, OpenMC, Serpent 2, sodium-cooled fast reactor, start-up tests.
The China Experimental Fast Reactor (CEFR) is a small, sodium-cooled fast reactor with 20 MW(e) of power. Start-up tests of the CEFR were performed from 2010 to 2011. The China Institute of Atomic Energy made some of the neutronics start-up-test data available to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) as part of an international neutronics benchmarking exercise by distributing the experimental data to interested organizations from the member states of the IAEA. This benchmarking aims to validate and verify the physical models and neutronics simulation codes with the help of the recorded experimental data. The six start-up tests include evaluating criticality, control-rod worth, reactivity effects, and neutron spectral characteristics. As part of this coordinated research, the IAEA performed neutronics calculations using the Monte Carlo codes Serpent 2 and OpenMC, which can minimize modeling assumptions and produce reference solutions for code verification. Both codes model a thr... [more]

Fast Real-Time RDFT- and GDFT-Based Direct Fault Diagnosis of Induction Motor Drive
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: automated diagnosis, estimation, fault diagnosis, Goertzel DFT, induction motor, real-time diagnosis, recursive DFT, rotor fault, sensitivity analysis.
This paper presents the theoretical analysis and experimental verification of a direct fault harmonic identification approach in a converter-fed electric drive for automated diagnosis purposes. On the basis of the analytical model of the proposed real-time direct fault diagnosis, the fault-related harmonic component is calculated using recursive DFT (RDFT) and Goertzel DFT (GDFT), applied instead of the full spectrum calculations required in the most popular FFT algorithm. The simulation model of an inverter sensorlessly controlled induction motor drive is linked with the induction machine rotor fault model for testing the sensitivity of the GDFT- and RDFT-based fault diagnosis to state variable estimation errors. According to the presented simulation results, the accuracy of the direct identification of a fault-related harmonic is sensitive to the quality of fault harmonic frequency estimation. The sensitivity analysis with respect to RDFT and GDFT algorithms is included. Based on the... [more]

Porewater Geochemical Assessment of Seismic Indications for Gas Hydrate Presence and Absence: Mahia Slope, East of New Zealand’s North Island
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: carbon isotope analysis, methane, seismic data, sub-bottom profiler data, vertical migration.
We compare sediment vertical methane flux off the Mahia Peninsula, on the Hikurangi Margin, east of New Zealand’s North Island, with a combination of geochemical, multichannel seismic and sub-bottom profiler data. Stable carbon isotope data provided an overview of methane contributions to shallow sediment carbon pools. Methane varied considerably in concentration and vertical flux across stations in close proximities. At two Mahia transects, methane profiles correlated well with integrated seismic and TOPAS data for predicting vertical methane migration rates from deep to shallow sediment. However, at our “control site”, where no seismic blanking or indications of vertical gas migration were observed, geochemical data were similar to the two Mahia transect lines. This apparent mismatch between seismic and geochemistry data suggests a potential to underestimate gas hydrate volumes based on standard seismic data interpretations. To accurately assess global gas hydrate deposits, multiple... [more]

Electro-Hydraulic Variable-Speed Drive Networks—Idea, Perspectives, and Energy Saving Potentials
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: Electro-hydraulic Cylinder Drives, electro-hydraulic variable-speed drive networks, Energy Efficiency, hydraulic actuation, linear actuation, power sharing.
Electro-hydraulic differential cylinder drives with variable-speed displacement units as their central transmission element are subject to an increasing focus in both industry and academia. A main reason is the potential for substantial efficiency increases due to avoidance of throttling of the main flows. Research contributions have mainly been focusing on appropriate compensation of volume asymmetry and the development of standalone self-contained and compact solutions, with all necessary functions onboard. However, as many hydraulic actuator systems encompass multiple cylinders, such approaches may not be the most feasible ones with respect to efficiency or commercial feasibility. This article presents the idea of multi-cylinder drives, characterized by electrically and hydraulically interconnected variable-speed displacement units essentially allowing for completely avoiding throttle elements, while allowing for hydraulic and electric power sharing as well as the sharing of auxilia... An Improved Finite Control Set Model Predictive Current Control for a Two-Phase Hybrid Stepper Motor Fed by a Three-Phase VSI
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: finite control set, Model Predictive Control, stepper motor, voltage source inverter.
In this paper, an improved finite control set model predictive current control (FCS-MPCC) is proposed for a two-phase hybrid stepper motor fed by a three-phase voltage source inverter (VSI). The conventional FCS-MPCC selects an optimal voltage vector (VV) from six active and one null VVs by evaluating a simple cost function and then applies the optimal VV directly to the VSI. Though the implementation is simple, it features a large current ripple and total harmonic distortion (THD). The proposed improved FCS-MPCC builds an extended control set consisting of 37 VVs to replace the original control set with only seven VVs. The increase in the amount of VVs helps to regulate the current more accurately. In each control period, the improved FCS-MPCC takes advantage of deadbeat control to calculate a reference VV, and only the three VVs adjacent to the reference VV are predicted and evaluated, which decrease the computational workload significantly. Build waveform patterns for all VVs in the... [more]

March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: deep learning, echo state networks (ESNs), engine, Fault Detection, multi-verse optimizer (MVO).
This paper aims to develop an efficient pattern recognition method for engine fault end-to-end detection based on the echo state network (ESN) and multi-verse optimizer (MVO). Bispectrum is employed to transform the one-dimensional time-dependent vibration signal into a two-dimensional matrix with more impact features. A sparse input weight-generating algorithm is designed for the ESN. Furthermore, a deep ESN model is built by fusing fixed convolution kernels and an autoencoder (AE). A novel traveling distance rate (TDR) and collapse mechanism are studied to optimize the local search of the MVO and speed it up. The improved MVO is employed to optimize the hyper-parameters of the deep ESN for the two-dimensional matrix recognition. The experiment result shows that the proposed method can obtain a recognition rate of 93.10% in complex engine faults. Compared with traditional deep belief networks (DBNs), convolutional neural networks (CNNs), the long short-term memory (LSTM) network, and... [more]

March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: direct torque control, dynamic characteristics, electromechanical coupling modeling, traction drive system, variable conditions.
The traction drive system of a high-speed train has a vital role in the safe and efficient operation of the train. This paper established an electromechanical coupling model of a high-speed train. The model considers the interaction of the gear pair, the equivalent connecting device of the transmission system, the equivalent circuit of the traction motor, and the direct torque control strategy. Moreover, the numerical simulation of the high-speed train model includes constant speed, traction, and braking conditions. The results indicate that the meshing frequency and the high harmonics rotation frequency constitute the stator current. Furthermore, both frequencies are evident during constant speed. However, they are blurry among other conditions except for twice the rotation frequency. Meanwhile, the rotor and stator currents’ root-mean-square (RMS) values during traction are less than the RMS value during braking. The initiation of traction and braking causes a significant increase in... [more]

Fault Diagnosis of Rotor Broken Bar in Induction Motor Based on Successive Variational Mode Decomposition
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: broken bar faults, induction motor, quantification of failure severity, starting current, successive variational mode decomposition (SVMD).
When an induction motor is running at stable speed and low slip, the fault signal of the induction motor’s broken bar faults are easily submerged by the power frequency (50 Hz) signal. Thus, it is difficult to extract fault characteristics. The left-side harmonic component representing the fault characteristics can be distinguished from power frequency owing to V-shaped trajectory of the fault component in time-frequency (t-f) domain during motor startup. This article proposed a scheme to detect broken bar faults and discriminate the severity of faults under starting conditions. In this scheme, successive variable mode decomposition (SVMD) is applied to analyze the stator starting current to extract the fault component, and the signal reconstruction is proposed to maximize the energy of the fault component. Then, the quadratic regression curve method of instantaneous frequency square value of the fault component is utilized to discriminate whether the fault occurs. In addition, accordi... [more]

A Bidirectional Grid-Connected DC−AC Converter for Autonomous and Intelligent Electricity Storage in the Residential Sector
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: bidirectional DC–AC converter, high compactness, high efficiency, home electricity management systems.
Controlling the cost of electricity consumption remains a major concern, particularly in the residential sector. Smart home electricity management systems (HEMS) are becoming increasingly popular for providing uninterrupted power and improved power quality, as well as for reducing the cost of electricity consumption. When power transfer is required between a storage system and the AC grid, and vice versa, these HEMS require the use of a bidirectional DC−AC converter. This paper emphasizes the potential value of an almost unexplored topology, the design of which was based on the generation of sinusoidal signals from sinusoidal half waves. A DC−DC stage, which behaved as a configurable voltage source, was in series with a DC−AC stage, i.e., an H-bridge, to achieve an architecture that could operate in both grid and off-grid configurations. Wide bandgap power switches (silicon carbide metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistors [MOSFETs]), combined with appropriate control strategi... [more]

High voltage direct current (HVDC) technology has begun to gather a high degree of interest in the last few decades, showing a fast evolution of achievable voltage levels, transfer capacities, and transmission lengths. All these changes occurred in a context in which power system applications are highly dependent on HVDC technologies such as energy generation from renewable sources (e.g., energy generated in offshore wind power plants), power exchanges between asynchronous networks, submarine cables, and long-length transmission overhead lines have become more common worldwide. This paper tries to summarize the current state of HVDC technologies, both voltage-source converters and current-source converters, the main components of converter substations, control strategies, key challenges arising from their use, as well as the future prospects and trends of HVDC applications. Self-Triggered Model Predictive Control of AC Microgrids with Physical and Communication State Constraints
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: AC microgrids, Model Predictive Control, physical and communication state constraints, self-triggered.
In this paper, we investigate the secondary control problems of AC microgrids with physical states (i.e., voltage, frequency and power, etc.) constrained in the process of actual control, namely, under the condition of state constraint. On the basis of the primary control (i.e., droop control), the control signals generated by distributed secondary control algorithm are used to solve the problems of voltage and frequency recovery and power allocation for each distributed generators (DGs). Therefore, the model predictive control (MPC) with the mechanism of rolling optimization is adopted in the second control layer to achieve the above control objectives and solve the physical state constraint problem at the same time. Meanwhile, in order to reduce the communication cost, we designed the self-triggered control based on the prediction mechanism of MPC. In addition, the proposed algorithm of self-triggered MPC does not need sampling and detection at any time, thus avoiding the design of o... [more]

Robust Economic MPC of the Absorption Column in Post-Combustion Carbon Capture through Zone Tracking
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: nonlinear systems, post-combustion carbon capture, predictive control, robustness, zone tracking.
Several studies have reported the importance of optimally operating the absorption column in a post-combustion CO2 capture (PCC) plant. It has been demonstrated in our previous work how economic model predictive control (EMPC) has a great potential to improve the operation of the PCC plant. However, the use of a general economic objective such as maximizing the absorption efficiency of the column can cause EMPC to drive the state of the system close to the constraints. This may lead to solvent overcirculation and flooding, which are undesirable. In this work, we present an EMPC with zone tracking algorithm as an effective means to address this problem. The proposed control algorithm incorporates a zone tracking objective and an economic objective to form a multi-objective optimal control problem. To ensure that the zone tracking objective is achieved in the presence of model uncertainties and time-varying flue gas flow rate, we propose a method to modify the original target zone with a... Approximate Analytical Solutions to Nonlinear Oscillations of Horizontally Supported Jeffcott Rotor
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: asymmetric nonlinearity, nonlinear oscillations, optimal auxiliary functions method, rotor dynamics, simultaneous and internal resonance.
The present paper focuses on nonlinear oscillations of a horizontally supported Jeffcott rotor. An approximate solution to the system of governing equations having quadratic and cubic nonlinearities is obtained in two cases of practical interest: simultaneous and internal resonance. The Optimal Auxiliary Functions Method is employed in this study, and each governing differential equation is reduced to two linear differential equations using the so-called auxiliary functions involving a moderate number of convergence-control parameters. Explicit analytical solutions are obtained for the first time in the literature for the considered practical cases. Numerical validations proved the high accuracy of the proposed analytical solutions, which may be used further in the study of stability and in the design process of some highly performant devices.

Sliding Mode Observer-Based Fault Detection in Continuous Time Linear Switched Systems
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: Fault Detection, H∞ control, linear matrix inequalities, sliding mode observer, switched systems.
This paper studies the problem of fault detection for continuous time linear switched systems in the presence of disturbance. For this purpose, a fault detection sliding mode observer approach is designed to generate the residual signal. To minimize the effect of disturbance from the residual, the problem is formulated into H∞ filtering technique to increase more robustness. To deal with the issue of the switched systems stability, the Lyapunov-Krasovskii functional method is utilized along with average dwell time, and linear matrix inequalities are formulated to derive the sufficient conditions. The residual signal is evaluated, and an adaptive threshold is computed for both modes of the switched system. Finally, a simulation example for a case study of boost converter and a numerical example with both abrupt and incipient faults are illustrated to prove the efficacy of the proposed method.

Subject: Process Control
Keywords: carbonate oil reservoir, injection parameter, physical film coating, profile control, swelling retarding particles.
T oilfield is the fractured-vuggy carbonate reservoir at a temperature of around 130 °C, with salinity of up to 22 × 104 mg/L. In order to solve the problem of the high water cut in the late development stage of T oilfield, we selected XN-T from 27 kinds of swelling retarding particles by testing their swelling capacity, and coated a thin film to improve its retarding swelling capacity. The mechanisms of strong water absorption and water-holding abilities of particles were analyzed by infrared spectrometry and SEM. In the core flow experiment, the plugging rate was found to be 98.42%. Finally, the injection parameters of the coated particles were optimized to maximize the water plugging and profile control ability, resulting in an optimal particle size of 0.4−0.6 mm and a mass fraction of 10%.

Subject: Process Control
Keywords: curtailment, delta control, wake effect, wind farm management system, wind power control.
When a lot of surplus power occurs in wind power system, an output limit is implemented to directly or indirectly curtail the output to maintain a balance between the supply and demand of the power system. The curtailment process of a large-scale wind farm causes loss of power and mechanical loads. Resultantly, imbalanced curtailments often occur, resulting in unilateral burdens for the owners of wind farms. Considering the curtailment issue, the study for minimizing system loss of power plants is required in terms of operational efficiency. This paper proposes an algorithm to achieve flexible control during the actual power curtailment process in a wind farm, considering the wake effect. Here, the Monte Carlo method was adopted to calculate the curtailment weight in wind farms by using power loss terms. Subject: Process Control
Keywords: cable screen, earth fault detection and location, incipient earth fault, intermittent earth fault, protection relay, transient earth fault.
This paper presents the final development of an expert system utilizing a measurement of cable screen earthing transient current. The developed system allows for identification and location of earth fault in underground cable and mixed lines (underground cable and overhead line) and monitoring of an earthing system and cable screen connections. The unique feature of the developed earth fault locating system is the possibility of identification of line type and branch of the MV underground cable or mixed feeder under earth fault conditions. As a result, the time to remove failure can be greatly reduced and the number of earth fault indicators installed in the distribution network can also be reduced. Unfortunately, in order to operate properly, the previously developed system requires a fundamental—50 Hz component of the measured zero-sequence cable core current and cable screen earthing current; therefore, short transient earth faults without steady-state earth fault currents cannot be... Keywords: energy storage devices, power balanceability, power flow assignment, power fluctuations, renewable resources.
With the rapid development of distributed generators (DGs) and increasing power penetration level of renewable energy sources (RESs), it is a critical issue for any power system to operate safely and continuously in the presence of uncertainty and variability (i.e., power fluctuations) of generated power and demanded power. The introduction of controllable power generators and power storage devices is dispensable for mitigating this problem. To satisfy the power supply−demand balancing requirement, the power flow assignment is essential under power balance constraint. However, due to the physical power limitation constraints of power generators and loads, capacity limitation of power storage devices, and connection arrangement, it is hard to achieve power balance. In this paper, a system characterization is proposed that describes the relationship between power generators, loads, storage devices and connections among them. Nonlinear Dynamic Characteristics of Rod Fastening Rotor with Preload Relaxation
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: contact effect, non-uniform relaxation, nonlinear, preload, rod fastening rotor, uniform relaxation.
Compared to ordinary rotor, rod fastening rotor has the advantages of lighter weight, higher strength and easier installation, so it is widely used in gas turbine. However, in the process of a long-term operation, the rod may be deformed due to the influence of alternating load, high temperature and other uncertain factors. In serious cases, it can even lead to a major accident. The discontinuous characteristic of rod fastening rotor leads to great differences in dynamic characteristics compared to ordinary rotor. Based on the Herz contact theory and GW contact model, the contact effect between two discs was studied, and the relationship among the contact load, the distance between two disks and the equivalent bending stiffness was obtained. Findings show the bending stiffness to decrease nonlinearly with the decrease in contact load. The lumped mass method was used to establish the rotor model. The contact effect was considered and the Runge−Kutta method was used to solve the model. C... [more]

Macro-Economic Impact of Policies for Controlling Fossil Energy Consumption in China
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: fossil energy consumption, macro-economic, social accounting matrix, total control.
This paper analyzes the macro-economic impact of controlling fossil energy consumption in China by using a social accounting matrix framework. The empirical results show that, first, restricting the exploitation of fossil energy resources will lead to a decline in the output of other production activities, thereby reducing the factor income and the living standards of residents. Second, improving energy efficiency can promote increased output in other production sectors, and raise factor returns and residents’ living standards. Third, raising the price of energy products will result in higher costs of the entire society. The stronger the dependence on the energy sector, the greater the increase in the industrial cost. Therefore, the government should increase investment in energy efficiency, keep to energy intensity constraints, restrict the extraction amount of energy resources, and reasonably control energy prices based on market environmental factors.
