Integrated Electric Vehicle Shunt Current Sensing System for Concurrent Revenue Metering and Detection of DC Injection
Olga Mironenko, Garrett Ejzak, Willett Kempton.
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: bidirectional charging, current measurements, DC injection, electric vehicle supply equipment, electric vehicles, power quality, sensor systems and applications, shunts, vehicle to grid.
Certified electric vehicle power converters can inject DC current into the AC grid if they fail. Verification of DC injection by electric vehicle supply equipment can be a cost-effective extra measure to ensure power quality from a variety of plugged-in electric vehicles. As electric vehicle supply equipment typically performs high-accuracy revenue energy metering, we propose that measurement of AC current and DC injection with a single sensor is the most economically efficient design. This article presents an integrated shunt current sensing system with separation of AC and DC signals for concurrent revenue metering and DC injection detection. It also shows how the combined sensor is integrated into 19.2 kW single-phase electric vehicle supply equipment, and outlines how the design would be extended to 100 kW three-phase electric vehicle supply equipment. The prototype can detect DC injection of ≥400 mA in an AC current up to 80 A in accordance with the IEEE 1547-2018 standard. The pr... [more]

April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: consensus algorithms, linear matrix inequalities, microgrid, multi-agent systems, secondary control, sliding mode control, time delay systems, voltage control.
This paper focuses on the robust distributed secondary voltage restoration control of AC microgrids (MGs) under multiple communication delays and nonlinear model uncertainties. The problem is addressed in a multi-agent fashion where the generators’ local controllers play the role of cooperative agents communicating over a network and where electrical couplings among generators are interpreted as disturbances to be rejected. Communications are considered to be affected by heterogeneous network-induced time-varying delays with given upper-bounds and the MG is subjected to nonlinear model uncertainties and abrupt changes in the operating working condition. Robustness against uncertainties is achieved by means of an integral sliding mode control term embedded in the control protocol. Then, the global voltage restoration stability, despite the communication delays, is demonstrated through a Lyapunov-Krasovskii analysis. Given the delays’ bounds, and because the resulting stability condition... [more]
Cyber Attacks in Transactive Energy Market-Based Microgrid Systems

April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: cyber attacks, flexibility scheme, impact analysis, microgrid system, peer to peer energy trading, transactive energy market.
Due to the increasing integration of distributed energy generation in the electric grid, transactive energy markets (TEMs) have recently emerged to balance the demand and supply dynamically across the grid. TEM enables peer to peer (P2P) energy trading and brings flexibility by reducing users’ demand in the grid. It also enhances the system’s efficiency and reduces the pressure on electricity networks. However, it is vulnerable to major cyber attacks as users equipped with smart devices are participating autonomously in the energy market, and an extensive amount of information is exchanged through the communication channel. The potential attacks and impacts of those attacks need to be investigated to develop an attack resilient TEM-based power system. Hence, in this paper, our goal is to systematically identify possible cyber attacks associated with a TEM-based power system. In order to achieve this goal, we classify the attacks during the P2P and flexibility schemes of TEM into three... [more]

Rozmysław Mieński, Przemysław Urbanek, Irena Wasiak.
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: ancillary services, energy management, Energy Storage, prosumer installation, voltage regulation in a low-voltage network.
The paper includes the analysis of the operation of low-voltage prosumer installation consisting of receivers and electricity sources and equipped with a 3-phase energy storage system. The aim of the storage application is the management of active power within the installation to decrease the total power exchanged with the supplying network and thus reduce energy costs borne by the prosumer. A solution for the effective implementation of the storage system is presented. Apart from the active power management performed according to the prosumer’s needs, the storage inverter provides the ancillary service of voltage regulation in the network according to the requirements of the network operator. A control strategy involving algorithms for voltage regulation without prejudice to the prosumer’s interest is described in the paper. Reactive power is used first as a control signal and if the required voltage effect cannot be reached, then the active power in the controlled phase is additional... [more]

April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: durability, efficiency, kirigami, rotational energy, triboelectric nanogenerator.
While sliding-mode triboelectric nanogenerators (S-TENGs) have been considered as one of the most promising devices for rotational energy harvesting, their inherently poor durability has been a serious bottleneck for applications. Herein, we report a three-dimensional kirigami TENG as a highly efficient and durable rotational energy harvesting device. The kirigami TENG consisted of cube-shaped paper, aluminum (Al) foil electrode and polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) polymer film, and converted rotational motion into multiple folding-unfolding vibrations. The rotation-folding (R-F) kirigami TENG generated an open-circuit voltage of 31 V, a short-circuit current of 0.67 μA and an instantaneous power (power density) of 1.2 μW (0.13 μW/cm2) at 200 rpm, which was sufficient to turn on 25 light-emitting diodes and a thermo-hygrometer. The triboelectric outputs of the R-F kirigami TENG were only slightly decreased even after 288,000 continuous rotations, i.e., the output remained at 86% of its i... [more]

Keywords: cloud-based computing, control system, demand side management, distribution network, EEBUS, flow battery, fog-based computing, heat pump, monitoring system, photovoltaic generation, virtual power plant.
To integrate large-scale renewable energy into energy systems, an effective participation from private investors and active customer engagement are essential. Virtual power plants (VPPs) are a very promising approach. To realize this engagement, an efficient monitoring and control system needs to be implemented for the VPP to be flexible, scalable, secure, and cost-effective. In this paper, a realistic VPP in Western Australia is studied, comprising 67 dwellings, including a 810 kW rooftop solar photovoltaic (PV) system, a 700 kWh vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB), a heat pump hot water system (HWS), an electric vehicle (EV) charging station, and demand management mechanisms. The practical and detailed concept design of the monitoring and control system for EEBUS-enabled appliances, and also for the PV and VRFB system, with smart inverters, is proposed. In addition, a practical fog-based storage and computing system is developed to enable the VPP owner to manage the PV, VRFB, and EV c... [more]

April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: energy market, energy security, energy supplies, EU countries.
The main purpose of the paper was to present the energy balance in the EU countries. The specific objectives were to show the concentration and directions of changes in the demand, production, import, and export of energy in the EU countries, to determine the degree of variability (or stability) of these energy balance parameters, and to establish the correlation between the energy balance parameters and economic parameters. All members of the European Union were determinedly selected for research on 31 December 2018 (28 countries). The research period embraced the years 2004−2018. The sources of materials were the literature on the topic and data from Eurostat. Descriptive, tabular, and graphical methods, Gini coefficient, Lorenz curve, coefficient of variation, Pearson’s linear correlation coefficient, and constant-based dynamics indicators were used in the analysis and presentation of materials. It was determined that only the demand for energy and its import in EU countries were ne... [more]

David Vance, Ali Razban, Peter Schubert, Robert Weissbach.
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Energy Storage, microgrids, photovoltaic, power reliability, transactive energy.
In this study, a novel sizing methodology was developed for centralized and interconnected operating strategies of transactive microgrids and several variables were investigated including starting month, initial charge of battery, load variability, unit cost of solar panels and energy storage, number of systems, climate, and required reliability to determine their effect on total cost. The centralized strategy improved cost by seven to ten percent compared to the isolated strategy in every case. The interconnected strategy saved an incremental amount of money consistently compared to the isolated standard. The number of connected systems was not a strong effect. It was thought that increasing the number of systems would increase the benefit of energy sharing. Climate zones studied (“Cold”; “Hot-Dry/Mixed Dry”; “Mixed Humid”; and “Cold but with lower solar irradiation”) showed a large variation on cost with the Hot-Dry/Mixed Dry being the least expensive and Cold, with lower solar irrad... Keywords: battery energy storage system (BESS), home energy management (HEM), microgrids, optimal power sharing algorithm (OPSA), renewable energy sources (RESs).
From a residential point of view, home energy management (HEM) is an essential requirement in order to diminish peak demand and utility tariffs. The integration of renewable energy sources (RESs) together with battery energy storage systems (BESSs) and central battery storage system (CBSS) may promote energy and cost minimization. However, proper home appliance scheduling along with energy storage options is essential to significantly decrease the energy consumption profile and overall expenditure in real-time operation. This paper proposes a cost-effective HEM scheme in the microgrid framework to promote curtailing of energy usage and relevant utility tariff considering both energy storage and renewable sources integration. Usually, the household appliances have different runtime preferences and duration of operation based on user demand. This work considers a simulator designed in the C++ platform to address the domestic customer’s HEM issue based on usages priorities. The positive a... [more]
Active Power Filter Pre-Selection Tool to Enhance the Power Quality in Oil and Gas Platforms
Lais Abrantes Vitoi, Danilo Brandao, Elisabetta Tedeschi.
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: active power filter, G platform, O&amp, power quality, wide band-gap semiconductors.
This paper proposes a preliminary design tool for active power filters’ (APFs) solutions to be applied in offshore oil and gas platforms, where power quality indices are typically low, and reactive power compensation and current harmonic mitigation are often desired. The proposed approach considers that APF selection and rating is a trade-off between performance and size, and that both component and system aspects need to be optimized to achieve a well-tailored solution. As size and weight are critical constraints in offshore applications, possible benefits of using Silicon Carbide (SiC) switches for the APF implementation are investigated. Moreover, different compensation strategies are compared, varying the connection point of the APF between two different voltage levels and assigning the APFs different compensation goals. Improvements in power quality indices, as well as APFs rating, number of components, power losses, and filter size, have been considered for both SiC and Silicon-b... [more]
Government Incentive Contracts for Microgrid Users

April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: government, hidden information, incentive contracts, microgrid users, subsidy.
Tariff subsidies are beneficial to the further development of the microgrid market. In response to the reduction of the power generation costs of microgrids, the energy storage subsidy for microgrids has become a key factor affecting their further development. Therefore, it is essential to explore and establish a government subsidy mechanism for the energy storage price of microgrids. In this paper, we consider the incentive compatibility constraints and participation constraints of both the government and the microgrid energy storage subsidy. The cases of hidden information and no hidden information are investigated. A microgrid energy storage subsidy model of the incentive compatibility constraint was established to analyze the efficiency of the government subsidy and the microgrid energy storage in the “self-generation + energy storage” mode. The results show that there is an adverse selection problem between the government and energy storage subsidies for microgrid users. In the ca... [more]

One of the recent trends that concern renewable energy sources and energy storage systems is the concept of virtual power plants (VPP). The majority of research now focuses on analyzing case studies of VPP in different issues. This article presents the investigation that is based on a real VPP. That VPP operates in Poland and consists of hydropower plants (HPP), as well as energy storage systems (ESS). For specific analysis, cluster analysis, as a representative technique of data mining, was selected for power quality (PQ) issues. The used data represents 26 weeks of PQ multipoint synchronic measurements for 5 related to VPP points. The investigation discusses different input databases for cluster analysis. Moreover, as an extension to using classical PQ parameters as an input, the application of the global index was proposed. This enables the reduction of the size of the input database with maintaining the data features for cluster analysis. Moreover, the problem of the optimal number... [more]

The integration of virtual power plants (VPP) has become more popular. Thus, research on VPP for different issues is highly desirable. This article addresses power quality issues. The presented investigation is based on multipoint, synchronic measurements obtained from five points that are related to the VPP. This article provides a proposition and discussion of using one global index in place of the classical power quality (PQ) parameters. Furthermore, in the article, one new global power quality index was proposed. Then the PQ measurements, as well as global indexes, were used to prepare input databases for cluster analysis. The mentioned cluster analysis aimed to detect the short-term working conditions of VPP that were specific from the point of view of power quality. To realize this the hierarchical clustering using the Ward algorithm was realized. The article also presents the application of the cubic clustering criterion to support cluster analysis. Then the assessment of the ob... [more]
A Novel Structure of a Power System Stabilizer for Microgrids
Jong Ju Kim, June Ho Park.
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: low-frequency oscillation, microgrids, power system stabilizer, small-signal stability, synchronous generator, transient stability.
This paper proposes a novel structure of a power system stabilizer (PSS) to improve the stability of synchronous generators (SGs) in microgrids. Microgrids are relatively vulnerable in terms of stability due to their small size and low inertia. The rotational inertia and voltage support of SGs are highly suitable for getting over the vulnerabilities of microgrids, but there exist weaknesses in low-frequency oscillations (LFOs) and limitations of synchronization due to electromagnetic characteristics. Therefore, we study how to accommodate the features of microgrids in the PSS of SGs and further enhance present advantages. The PSS proposed in this paper not only damps out LFOs by conventional lead-lag compensation but also provides additional damping torque according to the magnitude of the perturbation using a synchronous impedance characteristic (SIC). The proposed Lyapunov energy-function-based control strategy can also increase the synchronizing power of the SG to improve transient... [more]

The increase of distributed energy resources (DERs) in low voltage (LV) distribution networks requires the ability to perform an accurate power flow analysis (PFA) in unbalanced systems. The characteristics of a well performing power flow algorithm are the production of accurate results, robustness and quick convergence. The current study proposes an improvement to an already used backward-forward sweep (BFS) power flow algorithm for unbalanced three-phase distribution networks. The proposed power flow algorithm can be implemented in large systems producing accurate results in a small amount of time using as little computational resources as possible. In this version of the algorithm, the network is represented in a tree-like structure, instead of an incidence matrix, avoiding the use of redundant computations and the storing of unnecessary data. An implementation of the method was developed in Python programming language and tested for 3 IEEE feeder test cases (the 4 bus feeder, the 1... [more]

Keywords: cloud computing, distributed energy resources, fog computing, fuzzy logic, net-metering, peer-to-peer trading, smart grid.
With the recent technological advancements, it has become possible to conceive numerous valuable applications for efficient utilization of energy resources in a smart grid. As distributed energy generation and distributed storage systems become cost-effective, trading energy becomes a lucrative alternative for both prosumers and manufacturers. In this paper, we make use of fuzzy logic to propose a system for optimal energy trading in a fog-enabled smart grid set-up. The existing systems in this realm have inherited issues of network latency, computational expensiveness, information availability, scalability, and performance. Some systems require a specialized transmission line for energy trading and plenty of them based on the dedicated producer-consumer model, putting limits to their practical effectiveness. Our framework makes use of fog-computing infrastructure to address scalability, information availability, and network latency issues. We exploit the fuzzy logic paradigm to handle... [more]

Keywords: Big Data, electric vehicles (EVs), energy consumption, energy demands, estimation model, smart grid.
The ubiquitous influence of E-mobility, especially electrical vehicles (EVs), in recent years has been considered in the electrical power system in which CO2 reduction is the primary concern. Having an accurate and timely estimation of the total energy demand of EVs defines the interaction between customers and the electrical power grid, considering the traffic flow, power demand, and available charging infrastructures around a city. The existing EV energy prediction methods mainly focus on a single electric vehicle energy demand; to the best of our knowledge, none of them address the total energy that all EVs consume in a city. This situation motivated us to develop a novel estimation model in the big data regime to calculate EVs’ total energy consumption for any desired time interval. The main contribution of this article is to learn the generic demand patterns in order to adjust the schedules of power generation and prevent any electrical disturbances. The proposed model successfull... [more]

The two cells of each phase of the rectifier and inverter are connected in interleaving using an intercell transformer (ICT) in order to reduce the volume of the output filter. Such an E-Type topology arrangement is expected to allow both the high efficiency and power density required for microgrid applications, as well as being capable of providing good performance in terms of quality of the voltage and current waveforms. The proposed hardware design and control interface are supported by the simulation results performed in Matlab/Sim... [more]

A stochastic method is proposed to calculate the security of supply throughout the networks, taking into account the likelihood of events, operational constraints and dynamic supply and demand. The stochastic method is evaluated on a real gas network case study. The calculated security of supply parameters provide insight into the most critical parts of the network and can be used for future network planning. The capabilities of the coupled hybrid energy network simulation are demonstrated on the real gas network coupled to a simplified electricity n... [more]

Knowledge of the conducted emissions in the frequency range 2−150 kHz contains some gaps related to the impact of the harmonics in the supply voltage on the nature of these emissions. It can be noticed that the conducted emissions from non-sinusoidal power supplies have not been studied sufficiently, and that the impact of this distortion may be greater than the generally known results of emission tests carried out under standardized test conditions. This paper is aimed at investigating experimental cases of the influence of supply voltage waveform distortion on non-intentional emission in the range 2−150 kHz and the efficiency of power line communication based on selected PRIME (PoweRline Intelligent Metering Evolution) power line communication (PLC) technology. A series of experimental laboratory studies were investigated, representing the operation of the investigated PLC system with different types of end-user equipment (LED—Light Emitting Diode, CFL—Compact Fluorescent Lamp, induc... Keywords: charging cost minimization, distribution network operation, fixed charging station, mobile battery energy storage system, mobile charging station, plug-in electric vehicle.
The high share of electric vehicles (EVs) in the transportation sector is one of the main pillars of sustainable development. Availability of a suitable charging infrastructure and an affordable electricity cost for battery charging are the main factors affecting the increased adoption of EVs. The installation location of fixed charging stations (FCSs) may not be completely compatible with the changing pattern of EV accumulation. Besides, their power withdrawal location in the network is fixed, and also, the time of receiving the power follows the EVs’ charging demand. The EV charging demand pattern conflicts with the network peak period and causes several technical challenges besides high electricity prices for charging. A mobile battery energy storage (MBES) equipped with charging piles can constitute a mobile charging station (MCS). The MCS has the potential to target the challenges mentioned above through a spatio-temporal transfer in the required energy for EV charging. Accordingl... [more]

Keywords: aquatic unmanned vehicle, locomotion type, piezoelectric energy harvesting, soft robotic.
In this work, an investigation into the influence of prescribed motion on a body caudal fin aquatic unmanned vehicle (AUV) energy harvester is carried out. The undulatory−oscillation locomotion inspired by fishes actuates a composite beam representative of a spinal column with a piezoelectric patch. Two patch configurations—one at the head and tail—are considered for the AUV energy harvester, with a length that would not activate a harmonic in the system. An electromechanical model which accounts for the strain of the prescribed motion and the induced relative strain is developed. Discretizing the relative strain using Galerkin’s method requires a convergence study in which the impacts of the prescribed motion, dependent on the undulation and envelope of the motion, are investigated. The combination of prescribed motion and structural terms leads to a coupling that requires multiple investigations. The removal of the undulation of the system produces a more consistent response. In this review, the state of the art of 23 distributed generation and microgrids standards has been analyzed. Among these standards, 18 correspond mainly to distributed generation while five of them introduce the concept of microgrid. The following topics have been considered: interconnection criteria, operating conditions, control capabilities, power quality, protection functions and reference variables. The revised national standards cover ten countries on four continents, which represents 80% of the countries with the largest installed renewable capacities. In addition, eight other relevant international standards have been analyzed, finding IEEE 1547 as the most comprehensive standard. It is identified a clear need to define a common framework for distributed energy resources (DERs) and microgrid standards in the future, wherein topics, terminology, and values are expressed in a manner that may widely cover the entire diversity in a way similar to how it has already been expressed... The Impact of the Selection of Exogenous Variables in the ANFIS Model on the Results of the Daily Load Forecast in the Power Company
Janusz Sowinski.
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: ANFIS model, computational intelligence, input variables selection, short-term load forecasting.
Forecasting of daily loads is crucial for the Distribution System Operators (DSO). Contemporary short-term load forecasting models (STLF) are very well recognized and described in numerous articles. One of such models is the Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS), which requires a large set of historical data. A well-recognized issue both for the ANFIS and other daily load forecasting models is the selection of exogenous variables. This article attempts to verify the statement that an appropriate selection of exogenous variables of the ANFIS model affects the accuracy of the forecasts obtained ex post. This proposal seems to be a return to the roots of the Polish econometrics school and the use of the Hellwig method to select exogenous variables of the ANFIS model. In this context, it is also worth asking whether the use of the Hellwig method in conjunction with the ANFIS model makes it possible to investigate the significance of weather variables on the profile of the daily loa...
