Highly Efficient and Rapid Removal of Methylene Blue from Aqueous Solution Using Folic Acid-Conjugated Dendritic Mesoporous Silica Nanoparticles
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: amine-functionalization, cationic dyes, dendritic mesoporous silica nanoparticles, dyes removal, folic acid-conjugation
Dendritic Mesoporous Silica Nanoparticles (DMSNs) are considered superior in the adsorption of unfavorable chemical compounds and biological pollutants. Herein, we have synthesized folic acid-terminated dendritic mesoporous silica nanoparticles (FA-DMSN) for the removal of cationic dyes, methylene blue (MB), from aqueous solutions. The structural, morphological, functional, specific surface area, pore size distribution, and thermal properties of the synthesized DMSNs were identified using a scanning electron microscope (SEM), a transmission electron microscope (TEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), dynamic light scattering (DLS), Brunauer−Emmett−Teller (BET), and Thermogravimetric Analyzer (TGA). The synthesized DMSNs exhibited a high surface area (521 m2 −1) and pore volume (1.2 cm3 g−1). In addition, it features both wide pore size and narrow distributions, which strongly affect the adsorption performance in terms of the equilibrium uptake time. Moreover, the imp... [more]

A Multi-Physic Modelling Insight into the Differences between Microwave and Conventional Heating for the Synthesis of TiO2 Nanoparticles
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: conventional heating, heating rate, microwave heating, multi-physics numerical simulation, nanoparticles, temperature profile, TiO2 synthesis
Microwave-assisted synthesis of nanoparticles usually leads to a smaller and more uniformly distributed particle size compared to conventional heating (e.g., oil bath). Numerical simulation can help to obtain a better insight into the process in terms of temperature distribution or to evidence existing different temperature profiles and heating rates between the two techniques. In this paper multi-physics numerical simulation is used to investigate the continuous flow synthesis of titanium oxide nanoparticles starting from alkoxide precursors. Temperature-dependent permittivity of reactants has been measured, including the effects of permanence at the maximum synthesis temperature. A temperature homogeneity index has been defined to compare microwave and conventional heating. Results show that when using microwave heating at 2450 MHz, in the investigated conditions, a much higher temperature homogeneity of the reactants is reached. Moreover, reactants experience different heating rates... [more]

Material Removal Optimization Strategy of 3D Block Cutting Based on Geometric Computation Method
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: average material removal rate (AMRR), block cutting, convex polygon (CPG), convex polyhedron (CPH), data reconstruction, path optimization
During the material removal stage in stone rough processing, milling type has been widely explored, which, however, may cause time and material consumption, as well as substantial stress for the environment. To improve the material removal rate and waste reuse rate in the rough processing stage for three-dimensional stone products with a special shape, in this paper, circular saw disc cutting is explored to cut a convex polyhedron out of a blank box, which approaches a target product. Unlike milling optimization, this problem cannot be well solved by mathematical methods, which have to be solved by geometrical methods instead. An automatic block cutting strategy is proposed intuitively by considering a series of geometrical optimization approaches for the first time. To obtain a big removal block, constructing cutting planes based on convex vertices is uniquely proposed. Specifically, the removal vertices (the maximum thickness of material removal) are searched based on the octree algo... [more]

Latest Advances in Waste Plastic Pyrolytic Catalysis
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: catalysts, catalytic pyrolysis, environmental challenges, pyrolytic products, recycling, Sustainability, waste plastics
With the increase in demand for plastic use, waste plastic (WP) management remains a challenge in the contemporary world due to the lack of sustainable efforts to tackle it. The increment in WPs is proportional to man’s demand and use of plastics, and these come along with environmental challenges. This increase in WPs, and the resulting environmental consequences are mainly due to the characteristic biodegradation properties of plastics. Landfilling, pollution, groundwater contamination, incineration, and blockage of drainages are common environmental challenges associated with WPs. The bulk of these WPs constitutes polyethene (PE), polyethene terephthalate (PET) and polystyrene (PS). Pyrolysis is an eco-friendly thermo-chemical waste plastic treatment solution for valuable product recovery, preferred over landfilling and incineration solutions. In this extensive review, a critical investigation on waste plastic catalytic pyrolysis (WPCP) is performed, including catalyst and non-catal... [more]

Biochar-Based Compost Affects Bacterial Community Structure and Induces a Priming Effect on Soil Organic Carbon Mineralization
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: biochar, compost, soil bacterial community, soil physicochemical property, urban tree
Urban forests are key to mitigating the Urban Heat Island Effect, which contributes to temperature increases in urban areas. However, the trees in these forests are usually under stress because urban soil is typically degraded. Biochar/compost amendments help with soil management by improving the physiochemical properties and bacterial communities of soil. Here, we compared the physiochemical properties and bacterial communities before and after (1) biochar-only and (2) biochar-based compost amendments. Our results suggested that biochar-only application did not improve soil properties after 1 year of treatment, whereas in the biochar-based compost treatment, the soil properties and bacterial communities changed after just four months. The increase in potassium and decrease in organic material, calcium, and available phosphorus in the soil of the former treatment indicated that the nutrient uptake of its trees had improved. Although there was no significant variation in the soil’s tota... [more]

February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: corncob, E. coli HMFOMUT, furfural, solid acid, xylose
Valorization of lignocellulosic materials into value-added biobased chemicals is attracting increasing attention in the sustainable chemical industry. As an important building block, furoic acid has been commonly utilized to manufacture polymers, flavors, perfumes, bactericides, fungicides, etc. It is generally produced through the selective oxidation of furfural. In this study, we provide the results of the conversion of biomass-based xylose to furoic acid in a chemoenzymatic cascade reaction with the use of a heterogeneous chemocatalyst and a dehydrogenase biocatalyst. For this purpose, NaOH-treated waste shrimp shell was used as a biobased carrier to prepare high activity and thermostability of biobased solid acid catalysts (Sn-DAT-SS) for the dehydration of corncob-valorized xylose into furfural at 170 °C in 30 min. Subsequently, xylose-derived furfural and its derivative furfuryl alcohol were wholly oxidized into furoic acid with whole cells of E. coli HMFOMUT at 30 °C and pH 7.0.... [more]

Characterization of Refining the Morphology of Al−Fe−Si in A380 Aluminum Alloy due to Ca Addition
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: A380 alloy, AlFeSi phase, Ca, refine
Aluminum−silicon (Al−Si) alloys are the most commonly cast aluminum alloys. Fe is the most deleterious element for Al−Si die casting alloys, as its existence causes the precipitation of substantial intermetallics that result in the unsatisfactory mechanical performance of the alloy, such as its ductility. Hence, controlling the morphology and formation of the AlFeSi phase, particularly the β-AlFeSi phase, is vital for improving the ductility of Al−Si die casting alloys. Herein, Ca was added to the A380 alloy, and the morphological changes resulting from the influence of Ca on the AlFeSi phase were characterized. The outcomes revealed that according to different cooling rates, specific amounts of Ca addition (0.01−0.1 wt.%) were capable of refining α-AlFeSi and β-AlFeSi morphology and transforming the β-AlFeSi phase into α-AlFeSi. Moreover, Ca addition could also modify eutectic silicon. The transformation mechanism and refining role of Ca in AlFeSi and the different morphologies of Al2... [more]

Study on the Domain of Parameters in the Stochastic Reconstruction Method
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: domain of parameters, gamma distribution, predicted distributions of mass fraction, stochastic reconstruction
In the stochastic reconstruction of petroleum fractions, the domain configuration for parameters is of great significance to the performance of the model in terms of accuracy and convergence. Based on the stochastic reconstruction model of gas oils, this work investigates the influence of different domains on the simulating accuracy, the convergence rate and the ability to predict detailed composition. In this paper, the parameters to be optimized in the model include histogram distributions and gamma distributions, which are used to represent the structural attributes. In each histogram distribution, the parameters are real numbers between zero and one that should increase progressively. The mean and shape parameters are used as the tuning parameters for gamma distribution. As for the mean, the lower and upper boundaries are configured as fixed values that depend on the predefined values of the structural attributes. For the shape parameter, multiple cases are considered for its upper... [more]

Rendering of Beef Tallow for Biodiesel Production: Microwave versus Boiling Water and Acetone Fat Extraction
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: biodiesel, calcium catalyst, low-grade raw materials, microwave, rendering, tallow
Biodiesel can substitute for conventional diesel fuel and contribute to the decarbonization of the transportation sector. To improve biodiesel sustainability and decrease production costs, low-grade fats such as non-edible animal fats must be used. Animal fats are mixed with tissues which must be removed before alcoholysis to avoid biodiesel contamination with nitrogen and phosphorus-containing compounds. Biodiesel was produced by the methanolysis of beef tallow and beef tallow/soybean oil mixtures over calcium heterogeneous catalysts obtained by the calcination of scallop shells. The tallow from fatty bovine tissues was extracted using boiling water, dry microwave treatment, and acetone extraction. The thermal stability and the moisture content of the extracted fats were evaluated by thermogravimetry. The thermograms of fats revealed that microwave treatment, which was faster (3 min instead of 40 min for boiling water and 240 min for acetone extraction) and had the lowest energy consu... [more]

The Influence of Size Effect to Deformation Mechanism of C5131 Bronze Structures of Negative Poisson’s Ratio
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: 3D auxetic structures, micro assembled, selective laser melting, structural surface layer model
3D auxetic structures, which present negative Poisson’s ratio in the uniaxial compression deformation, is an ideal artificial material for meta-implants because of its lightweight, good material property and suitable porosity for bone recovery compared with conventional meta-biomaterials. Selective laser melting (SLM) is commonly used to produce metallic 3D auxetic structures but limited by the melting temperature and reflect rate of the material, and micro assembled (MA) structures is an alternative manufacturing process. However, the influence of size effect in 3D auxetic structures and the difference of the constitutive model of 3D auxetic structure produced by SLM and MA have not been discussed. In tandem of this, the mechanical property comparison of 3D auxetic structures produced by SLM and MA is conducted and a structural surface layer model for 3D auxetic structures is proposed. The result indicated that both SLM and MA structure can achieve auxetic effect. It is found that the... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: MnO2/MXene composite film, Pb2+ adsorption, selective adsorption
A self-assembled MnO2/Mxene composite film was compounded with MXene nanosheets and layered crystalized MnO2 nanosheets using surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) as a soft template. The obtained material was characterized by XRD, SEM, XPS, and FT-IR, which showed that the films have large surface-active functional groups and metal ion flow channels, indicating that the MnO2/Mxene composite films were capable of both the chemical and physical adsorption of the target heavy metal ions. The analysis of adsorption performance showed that the Pb2+ removal rate reached 98.3% at pH 6 and an initial Pb2+ concentration of 30 mg/L, while the maximum adsorption capacity could reach 1235 µmol/g. In addition, the MnO2/Mxene composite film had specific selectivity and recyclability. The reuse study verified that the Pb2+ removal rate reached 96.4% after five cycles, confirming that the MnO2/Mxene composite films had practical application prospects.

Subject: Materials
Keywords: alkali-activation, EAF ladle slag, fire resistance material, porous material
The application of electric arc furnace ladle slag (EAF ladle slag) in cement products might be limited due to the volume expansion and volume instability created by late hydration. Proper control technique should be developed before the reuse of ladle slag (LS). With the addition of aluminum powder in alkali-activated slag pastes, porous materials were produced. By adjusting the activator modulus between 1.25 and 2.00, fine pores were produced in the foamed pastes, and the material densities were controlled between 594 and 1184 kg/m3. The compressive strengths increased from 0.95 to 9.04 MPa with the increase in density. Direct firing tests showed that the produced porous materials could resist fire damage. With low thermal conductivities range from 0.532 to 1.435 W/m·K, the temperatures in the back panel of the materials were below 100 °C, even under flames of 800 °C for 1 h, which were better than marketing rock wool. Subject: Materials
Keywords: damping, dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), modal analysis, viscoelasticity
Viscoelastic damping materials are an effective means to control structural vibration, and are widely used in various fields. In this paper, we use the Dynamic Mechanical Analysis (DMA) characterization data of viscoelastic damping materials and dynamic characteristics experiments to study the dynamic characteristics of structural damping, analyze and summarize the relationship between the performance of damping materials with temperature and frequency, and explore the influencing factors of damping materials on structural vibration. The research shows that temperature and frequency have great influence on the performance of damping material, and the storage modulus and loss factor change regularly. The modal experiment analysis verifies that the viscoelastic damping material has a good suppression effect on structural vibration, which provides a theoretical basis for the development of damping materials with controllable temperature and frequency domains.

February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: anisotropy index, cardiac septum mechanics, left ventricle mechanics, myocardium tissue, right ventricle mechanics
Heart myocardia are critical to the facilitation of heart pumping and blood circulating around the body. The biaxial mechanical testing of the left ventricle (LV) has been extensively utilised to build the computational model of the whole heart with little importance given to the unique mechanical properties of the right ventricle (RV) and cardiac septum (SPW). Most of those studies focussed on the LV of the heart and then applied the obtained characteristics with a few modifications to the right side of the heart. However, the assumption that the LV characteristics applies to the RV has been contested over time with the realisation that the right side of the heart possesses its own unique mechanical properties that are widely distinct from that of the left side of the heart. This paper evaluates the passive mechanical property differences in the three main walls of the rat heart based on biaxial tensile test data. February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: Al0.5Ga0.5N nanowires, electronic structure, interstitial defect, vacancy defect
AlxGa1−xN nanowires are the key materials for next-generation ultraviolet (UV) detectors. However, such devices have a low quantum efficiency caused by the introduction of defects and impurities throughout the preparation process of nanowires. Herein, the effects of different interstitial defects and vacancy defects on the electronic structure of Al0.5Ga0.5N nanowires are investigated using density functional theory calculations. Our results successfully discovered that only the formation of an N interstitial defect is thermally stable. In addition, the introduction of different defects makes the different nanowires exhibit n-type or p-type characteristics. Additionally, different defects lead to a decrease in the conduction band minimum in band structures, which is the major cause for the decrease in work function and increase in electron affinity of Al0.5Ga0.5N nanowires. What is more, the calculation of the partial density of states also proved that the interstitial defects contribu... [more]

Queuing Models for Analyzing the Steady-State Distribution of Stochastic Inventory Systems with Random Lead Time and Impatient Customers
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: queuing models, random lead time, steady-state distribution, stochastic inventory systems
In material management, the inventory systems may have good management aspects in terms of materials; however, this negatively affects the relationship between the facility and customers. In classical inventory models, arriving demands are satisfied immediately if there is enough on-hand inventory. Traditional inventory models consider optimization problems and find the optimal policy of decision variables without computing the stationary distribution of the inventory states for random demand. Hence, a detailed analysis of inventory management systems requires a joint distribution of system stock levels and the number of requests to be investigated thoroughly. This research provides a new stochastic mathematical model for inventory systems with lead times and impatient customers under deterministic and uniform order sizes. The proposed model identifies the performance measures in a stochastic environment, analyzing the properties of the inventory system with stochastic and probabilisti... [more]

The Application of Breakthrough Pressure in the Evaluation of the Sealing Ability of Cement−Casing Interface and Cement Matrix in Underground Gas-Storage Wells
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: breakthrough pressure, cement sheath, cement–casing interface, interfacial transition zone, underground gas storage
This paper proposes an evaluation system for the sealing ability of cement−casing interface and cement matrix, which was developed based on a permeability testing device and a model that predicts the breakthrough pressure of cement sheath matrix and interfacial transition zone (ITZ). It was found that the breakthrough pressure of ITZ was much smaller than that of cement matrix. Moreover, compared with water-based drilling fluid, oil-based one led to lower breakthrough pressure of ITZ even after the flushing treatment. Meanwhile, latex, resin and elastic materials enabled a substantial rise in the breakthrough pressure of cement matrix. However, compared with the latex, resin and elastic cement, the expansive cement had higher breakthrough pressure of ITZ, indicating an improvement on the interface sealing ability. Additionally, a small enlargement rate of the hole diameter and long effective bond were able to prevent gas storage wells from leakage.
