Effect of Ultra-Fine Grinding on the Structure of Plant Raw Materials and the Kinetics of Melanin Extraction
February 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: buckwheat husk, crystallinity index, diffusion constant, Ganoderma applanatum, kinetic models, kinetic of extraction, mechanical treatment, melanin
Enhancing the extraction rate is one of the key objectives in optimization of extraction of substances from biogenic raw materials. Ultra-fine grinding of plant raw materials (to achieve particle size less than 300 µm) is a very appealing method for increasing the extraction rate using relatively simple equipment. However, this approach often fails to yield the desired result. This study focuses on the kinetics of melanin extraction from two types of raw materials: fungus Ganoderma applanatum and buckwheat husk. Particle size is shown to be just one of the key factors. The degree of order of plant-based feedstock strongly affects the intraparticle diffusion constants and can be a parameter controlling the diffusion rate. It has been shown that there exist optimal degrees of disorder of the crystal structure of plant raw materials, which have a dome-shaped dependence pattern and allow one to increase the diffusion coefficient by several dozen times. The kinetics of melanin extraction wa... [more]

A Comparative Analysis of Vanadyl Porphyrins Isolated from Resins of Heavy Oils with High and Low Vanadium Content
February 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: chromatography, Extraction, heavy oil, MALDI mass spectrometry, resins, spectroscopy, vanadium, vanadyl porphyrins
The composition of purified vanadyl porphyrins recovered from the resins of heavy oils possessing high and low vanadium contents was investigated. Vanadium content in the resins of the heavy oils under study differs by a factor of ca. 15. To recover and purify vanadyl porphyrins from the resins, extraction by N,N−dimethylformamide (DMF) with subsequent two-stage column chromatography on silica gel and sulfocationite were employed. The change of structural-group composition and content of vanadyl porphyrins in the products obtained at each stage was evaluated using Fourier IR and UV-Vis spectroscopy. Analysis of the purified vanadyl porphyrins using MALDI mass spectrometry determined distribution of their most abundant types (etio- and DPEP) and identified C27−C39 homologs for the resins possessing high vanadium content and C28−C39 homologs for the resins with low vanadium content.

Understanding the Impacts of Healing Agents on the Properties of Fresh and Hardened Self-Healing Concrete: A Review
February 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: bacteria, crystalline admixture, fresh properties, hardened properties, macrocapsules, microcapsules, self-healing concrete
Self-healing concrete has emerged as one of the prospective materials to be used in future constructions, substituting conventional concrete with the view of extending the service life of the structures. As a proof of concept, over the last several years, many studies have been executed on the effectiveness of the addition of self-healing agents on crack sealing and healing in mortar, while studies on the concrete level are still rather limited. In most cases, mix designs were not optimized regarding the properties of the fresh concrete mixture, properties of the hardened concrete and self-healing efficiency, meaning that the healing agent was just added on top of the normal mix (no adaptations of the concrete mix design for the introduction of healing agents). A comprehensive review has been conducted on the concrete mix design and the impact of healing agents (e.g., crystalline admixtures, bacteria, polymers and minerals, of which some are encapsulated in microcapsules or macrocapsul... Biocompatible Osmium Telluride-Polypyrrole Nanocomposite Material: Application in Prostate Specific Antigen Immunosensing
February 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: antibody, cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical immunosensor, osmium telluride quantum dots, polypyrrole, prostate specific antigen
Prostate cancer is a dominant global threat to society. It affects nearly 4000 men in South Africa annually, making it the second most threatening cancerous disease after lung cancer. A potential serological biomarker to monitor early diagnosis of prostate cancer is prostate specific antigen (PSA). We used the PSA biomarker in our work to develop an extremely sensitive electrochemical immunosensor to achieve low detection limits. The fabrication steps followed with the combination of thioglycolic acid capped osmium telluride quantum dots (TGA-OsTe2QD)-polypyrrole (PPy) nanocomposite and prostate specific antigen modified on a glassy carbon electrode. The UV-Vis signatures of TGA-OsTe2QD-PPy showed an absorption band at 262 nm which is attributed to the PPy and TGA-OsTe2QD composite. This band corresponds to the energy band gap of 4.4 and 5.4 eV. The CV responses of BSA|Ab|TGA-OsTe2QD|PPy|GCE modified electrode to prostate specific antigen (PSA) was studied within a range of 0−16 ng/mL... [more]

Performance and Sensitivity Properties of Solid Heterogeneous Rocket Propellant Based on a Binary System of Oxidizers (PSAN and AP)
February 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: inorganic potassium salts, phase stabilized ammonium nitrate (V), physical and thermomechanical properties of heterogeneous propellants, solid rocket propellant
Solid heterogeneous rocket propellants (SHRP) containing ammonium perchlorate (AP) emit a lot of hydrogen chloride (HCl) during combustion, which poses various environmental issues and makes the detection of the rockets easier. Part of the AP can be replaced by ammonium nitrate (V) (AN), which does not lead to the production of HCl. AN is a commonly used environmentally friendly oxidizer, but it is not usually applied in SHRP due to its disadvantages. One of these disadvantages is a phase transition near room temperature, which causes the density change of AN. Three types of phase stabilized ammonium nitrate (V) (PSAN) with inorganic potassium salts were obtained in order to shift this transition into higher temperatures (above the temperature range of the storage and the usage of SHRP). The SHRP with the PSAN were obtained, and the measurements of the heat of combustion, density, hardness, the sensitivity to mechanical stimuli and the thermomechanical properties were performed. Subject: Materials
Keywords: bioremediation, capsule polymerases, galactosyltransferase, molecular dynamics simulations, Neisseria meningitidis, polysaccharide biomaterials, protein engineering
Heavy metal contamination of drinking water is a public health concern that requires the development of more efficient bioremediation techniques. Absorption technologies, including biosorption, provide opportunities for improvements to increase the diversity of target metal ions and overall binding capacity. Microorganisms are a key component in wastewater treatment plants, and they naturally bind metal ions through surface macromolecules but with limited capacity. The long-term goal of this work is to engineer capsule polymerases to synthesize molecules with novel functionalities. In previously published work, we showed that the Neisseria meningitidis serogroup W (NmW) galactose−sialic acid (Gal−NeuNAc) heteropolysaccharide binds lead ions effectively, thereby demonstrating the potential for its use in environmental decontamination applications. In this study, computational analysis of the NmW capsule polymerase galactosyltransferase (GT) domain was used to gain insight into how the e... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: energy simulation, heat storage, phase change material, thermal comfort, thermal conductivity
The application of phase change materials (PCMs) has been verified as an effective strategy for improving energy efficiency and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Biocomposite PCMs (Bc-PCM) exhibit large latent heat, chemical stability, and a wide temperature range. In this study, thermal conductivity improved Bc-PCM (TBc-PCM) was made via vacuum impregnation with graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs). Chemical stability analysis and thermal performance analyses of the Bc-PCM and TBc-PCM were carried out as well as building energy simulations and thermal comfort analyses. Our results show Bc-PCM showed a higher heat storage capacity and enthalpy value compared to TBc-PCM. TBc-PCM exhibited a 378% increase in thermal conductivity compared to Bc-PCM. Building energy simulation results revealed that annual heating and cooling energy consumption decreased as the thickness of the PCM layer increased. In addition, the Bc-PCM with a larger PCM capacity was more effective in reducing energy consumptio... [more]

February 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical, FexCo3-xO4, HER, hydrothermal, OER, the specific capacitance
In this study, hydrothermally produced Fe-doped Co3O4 nanostructured particles are investigated as electrocatalysts for the water-splitting process and electrode materials for supercapacitor devices. The results of the experiments demonstrated that the surface area, specific capacitance, and electrochemical performance of Co3O4 are all influenced by Fe3+ content. The FexCo3-xO4 with x = 1 sample exhibits a higher BET surface (87.45 m2/g) than that of the pristine Co3O4 (59.4 m2/g). Electrochemical measurements of the electrode carried out in 3 M KOH reveal a high specific capacitance of 153 F/g at a current density of 1 A/g for x = 0.6 and 684 F/g at a 2 mV/s scan rate for x = 1.0 samples. In terms of electrocatalytic performance, the electrode (x = 1.0) displayed a low overpotential of 266 mV (at a current density of 10 mA/cm2) along with 52 mV/dec Tafel slopes in the oxygen evolution reaction. Additionally, the overpotential of 132 mV (at a current density of 10 mA/cm2) and 109 mV wi... [more]

The Potential Role of Nanoparticles as an Anticancer Therapy in the Treatment of Rectal Cancer
February 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: anti-cancer agents, colorectal cancer, nano-drugs, nanocarriers, nanoparticles
Nanotechnology is a rapidly developing science and is applied in a variety of diagnostic and treatment technologies. Colorectal cancer is one of the deadliest human diseases, and hence, wide research is underway regarding its preventative measures. This review demonstrated that “nano” drug delivery systems have successfully transferred pharmaceutical drug particles at the nanoscale as compared to larger particles. Research has shown a higher rate of disease progression among patients who receive conventional drugs compared to those who were given nanoscale drugs. However, the behavior of the cellular components differs from the performance of larger cellular components of the same type; these differences are due to the physical interactions between the nanoparticles (NPs). The review aimed to discuss several recent research studies focused on delivering NPs for the treatment of colorectal cancer (CRC). The reviewed experiments have primarily compared the use of NPs alone or with the ad... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: froth flotation, high-speed shear, oily sludge, residue, separation
Oily sludge (OS) contains a large number of hazardous materials, and froth flotation can achieve oil recovery and non-hazardous disposal of OS simultaneously. The influence of flotation parameters on OS treatment and the flotation mechanism were studied. OS samples were taken from Shengli Oilfield in May 2017 (OSS) and May 2020 (OST), respectively. Results showed that Na2SiO3 was the suitable flotation reagent treating OSS and OST, which could reduce the viscosity between oil and solids. Increasing flotation time, impeller speed and the ratio of liquid to OS could enhance the pulp shear effect, facilitate the formation of bubble and reduce pulp viscosity, respectively. Under the optimized parameters, the oil content of OST residue could be reduced to 1.2%, and that of OSS could be reduced to 0.6% because of OSS with low heavy oil components and wide solid particle size distribution. Orthogonal experimental results showed that the impeller speed was the most significant factor of all pa... [more]

Precomputation of Critical State Soil Plastic Models
February 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: critical state soil model, model normalization, modified Cam Clay model, plasticity, precomputation
In this paper, a simple precomputing procedure is proposed to improve the numerical performance of the technological application of critical state soil models. In these models, if associated plasticity is assumed, the normalization of the stress space allows both the yield surface and the plastic components of the elastoplastic matrix to be defined as a function of a single variable. This approach facilitates their parameterization and precomputation, preventing the repetition of calculations when the boundary value problems appear at the yield surface with the calculation of plastic strain. To illustrate the scope of the procedure, its application on a modified Cam Clay model is analysed, which shows that the method allows a significant reduction of about 50% (as compared with the conventional explicit integration algorithm) in the computational time without reducing the precision. Although it is intended for critical state models in soils, the approach can be applied to other materia... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: biomass mixture, bubble movement, concentration profile, gas-solid fluidized bed, mixing dynamics
Aiming to better understand the biomass pyrolysis and gasification processes, a detailed experimental study of the mixing characteristics is conducted in a fluidized bed with binary mixtures. Rapeseed is used as biomass, and silica sand or resin as inert material. The effect of mixture composition, initial packing manner, and superficial gas velocity on the concentration distribution is investigated in a rectangular fluidized bed by means of photography and sampling methods. The results show that the mixture composition plays an important role in the axial solids profile of binary mixtures. The mixing behavior of binary mixture is dominated by the bubble movement. The axial distribution of binary mixtures becomes uniform with increasing superficial gas velocity, whilst no obvious effect of initial packing manner is observed in this study.

Keywords: experimental study, graphene oxide, phase-change material, solar still
Solar-driven water desalination technologies are rapidly developing with various links to other renewable sources. However, the efficiency of such systems severely depends on the design parameters. The present study focused on using graphene oxide (GO) with the Φ = 0.2, 0.4 and 0.6 wt.% dispersed in paraffin, as phase-change materials (PCMs), to improve the productivity of a solar still for desalination applications. The outcomes showed that by adding more graphene oxide to paraffin, the melting temperature got reduced. Solar still with GO/paraffin showed 25% productivity improvement in comparison with the solar still with only PCM. The obtained Nusselt number during the melting time also represented that free convection heat transfer into the melted region of the solar still has been enhanced by adding dispersed GO to the PCM, compared to the base paraffin. Also, increasing the hot wall temperature augments the Nusselt number. Finally, an empirical equation was derived to correlate th... [more]
