A Visualized Experimental Study on the Influence of Reflux Hole on the Double Blades Self-Priming Pump Performance
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Operations
Keywords: gas–liquid two-phase flow, reflux hole, self-priming process, visualization experiment
The self-priming pump is a kind of centrifugal pump product with self-priming function, and the structural parameters of its reflux hole determine the performance. In order to reveal the mechanism of the self-priming process, we summarized the influence of structure parameters of the reflux hole on the performance of the self-priming pump. In this study, the transparent experimental pump was designed and manufactured, and a visual test bench was built. The gas−liquid two-phase flow pattern during the self-priming process with different reflux hole structure parameters was captured by high-speed camera. Results showed that: (1) the reflux hole of the self-priming pump affected the self-priming performance of the pump by affecting the backflow rate of the gas and liquid phases during the self-priming process. (2) Due to the uneven distribution of liquid velocity in the pump, the position of reflux hole had an obvious impact on the duration of self-priming middle stage, and the shortest d... [more]

Subject: Process Operations
Keywords: 3D printing, Arduino UNO R3, Bacillus, calcium carbonate, limiting velocity
Anthropogenic and natural actions cause internal and external fractures in concrete. To recover these structures, bio-concretes have been developed with bacteria of the genus Bacillus. These microorganisms consume calcium lactate, synthesize calcium carbonate and biomineralize CaCO3 crystals within the structures of concrete. The aim of the present study was to construct equipment, denominated “Cascade System for Biomineralization in Cement” (CSBC), to determine the limiting velocity of the biomineralization of CaCO3. The construction of the equipment took into consideration chemical and biochemical phenomena responsible for biomineralization. Parts made with 3D printing and a circuit with Arduino UNO R3 board were used in the assembly of the system. The prototype proved to be stable and can be considered a promising tool for future application in research of the regeneration of reinforced concreted in a practical, fast and economical way, especially to the energy sector.

Defining and Operationalizing Sustainability in the Context of Energy
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Operations
Keywords: definitions, goals, operationalizations, standards, Sustainability, sustainable
The terms sustainable and sustainability are currently often used in scientific journals, including Energies. There are cases where these terms are defined or operationalized, but more often they are not. This is problematic, as there are reportedly hundreds of (different) definitions and operationalizations (in terms of standards or goals) of sustainability. This large number has its roots in history. Many current definitions and operationalizations of sustainability are social constructs. As these constructs vary, there can be variation in the characterization of specific ways to provide energy as sustainable or not sustainable. There are also definitions of sustainability that have emerged from the sciences. These definitions can also lead to differences in the characterization of specific ways to provide energy as sustainable or not sustainable. In view thereof, there is a case to define and/or operationalize sustainable and sustainability when these terms are used in the context o... [more]

Proposal on New Tariffs with a Price Option per Use Time: Application to the Cooperativa Eléctrica San Pedro de Atacama (CESPA) Microgrid in Chile
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Operations
Keywords: CESPA, DSM, PV, smart meters, TOUP
In this paper, a pricing alternative based on the scheme of Time of Use Pricing (TOUP) is proposed for customers connected to the Cooperativa Eléctrica San Pedro de Atacama (CESPA) microgrid, located in the far north of Chile. With this proposal, the promotion of Demand-Side Management, DSM, aims at optimizing both the use of electric energy and the available infrastructure. The pricing proposal replaces the current tariff scheme based on sections of energy consumption and does not give an incentive for customers to efficiently manage their energy consumption. The proposal considers the creation of time bands and their corresponding tariff formulas, to obtain economic benefits both for customers and the electric company. Study cases consider the operation of a photovoltaic plant of 2 MWp in the electric system of CESPA, which is currently underway. The obtained results report benefits for all parts of the electric market. For customers, favorable pricing up to a 19.1% monthly reduction... [more]

Study on Induced Voltage and Circulation Current of Metal Layer in Single-Core Cable of High-Speed Railway Power Transmission Line
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Operations
Keywords: high-speed railway, induced voltage, shield protector grounding, single-core cable
The metal shield and metal armor layers of single-core cables on high-speed railroad power penetration lines are usually grounded by common equipment protectors. This grounding method brings a continuous circulating current between the metal shield and metal armor layer compared to the subequipment protection grounding. In order to quantitatively study the circulating current condition of the through line and its influence on the reliability of the railroad power through line, the induced electric potential and circulating current generation mechanism of the single-core cable of the through line and its influencing factors were firstly analyzed in depth. Then, based on the cross-sectional structure of the single-core cable and the location of the traction network and cable in the roadbed section, a traction power supply model was established and simulated for the interlayer-induced potentials and circulating currents due to the two grounding protection methods under no load, single tra... Cooling and Water Production in a Hybrid Desiccant M-Cycle Evaporative Cooling System with HDH Desalination: A Comparison of Operational Modes
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Operations
Keywords: evaporative cooling, humidification–dehumidification desalination, M-cycle, solid desiccant, water production
In this paper, the cooling and freshwater generation performance of a novel hybrid configuration of a solid desiccant-based M-cycle cooling system (SDM) combined with a humidification−dehumidification (HDH) desalination unit is analysed and compared in three operational modes: ventilation, recirculation, and half recirculation. The HDH unit in this system recycles the moist waste air sourced from the M-cycle cooler and rotary desiccant wheel of the SDM system to enhance water production. A mathematical model was established and solved using TRNSYS and EES software. The results of this study indicate that the recirculation mode exhibited superior cooling performance compared to the other two modes, producing up to 7.91 kW of cooling load and maintaining a supply air temperature below 20.85 °C and humidity of 12.72 g/kg under various ambient conditions. All the operational modes showed similar water production rates of around 52.74 kg/h, 52.43 kg/h, and 52.14 kg/h for the recirculation,... [more]

February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Operations
Keywords: carbon emotion, evolutionary game theory, intelligent coal mine, RDEU theory
The intelligent development of coal mines is a crucial way to achieve the safe, efficient, green, and low-carbon transformation of the coal industry and to reach the “double carbon” target, which is related to the life and health of miners, the stable development of enterprises and the national energy reform. As directly affected subjects, the cooperative attitudes of miners in different emotional states have a significant impact on the smooth implementation of intelligent coal mine renovation projects. Hence, we combined the RDEU theory and game theory, constructed a three-party evolutionary game model of the small and medium-sized energy enterprises (SMEE), the government, and the miner, considered the influence of the strategies made by the miner on the equilibrium strategy choices of other game subjects in the intelligent coal mine construction under the rational and irrational emotional states of the miner, and finally used MATLAB 2021 to simulate and analyze the impact of the evo... Keywords: chromatographic separation, operation mode, simulated moving bed, three-zone SMB, variants
Simulated moving bed (SMB) chromatography is a highly efficient adsorption-based separation technology with various industrial applications. At present, its application has been successfully extended to the biochemical and pharmaceutical industrial sectors. SMB possesses the advantages of high product purity and yield, large feed treatment capacity, and simple process control due to the continuous operation mode and the efficient separation mechanism, particularly for difficult separation. Moreover, SMB performs well, particularly for multi-component separation or complicated systems’ purification processes in which each component exhibits similar properties and low resolution. With the development of the economy and technology, SMB technology needs to be improved and optimized to enhance its performance and deal with more complex separation tasks. This paper summarizes the typical variants or modifications of the SMB process through three aspects: zone variant, gradient variant, and f... [more]

Study on the Hydrodynamic Performance of a Countercurrent Total Spray Tray under Sloshing Conditions
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Operations
Keywords: countercurrent total spray tray, hydrodynamic performance, offshore conditions, pressure drop, sloshing platform
In this paper, a new type of total spray tray (TST) with gas−liquid countercurrent contact is proposed to solve the problem of slight operation flexibility and poor sloshing resistance in towers under offshore conditions. Its hydrodynamic performance indicators, such as pressure drop, weeping, entrainment, and liquid level unevenness, were experimentally studied under rolling motion. A tower with an inner diameter of 400 mm and tray spacing of 350 mm was installed on a sloshing platform to simulate offshore conditions. The experimental results show that the rolling motion affected the hydrodynamic performance of the tray under experimental conditions. When the rolling amplitude did not exceed 4°, the degree of fluctuation of the hydrodynamic performance was small, and the tray could still work stably. With increasing rolling amplitude, the TST wet plate pressure drop, weeping, and liquid level unevenness fluctuations also increased. When the rolling amplitude reached 7°, the maximum fl... [more]

Investigation into Power Line Supporting Structure Dynamic Properties by Means of Impulse Test
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Operations
Keywords: impulse test, modal analysis, over-stiffened truss structures of complex geometry, supporting structure, technical diagnostics
Dynamic analysis of a large, full-scale construction requires proper excitation in order to induce vibrations that can be measured and further processed. The amount of delivered energy over the frequency band must be sufficient to excite all the mode shapes in the studied range. The paper concerns the pseudo-impulse pull-and-release method that allows to determine frequency response functions of a large, lightly damped structure and estimate its modal parameters. The main advantage of the developed method is the great independence of the repetitiveness of the experiment’s operational parameters. The output time histories from subsequent partial experiments are accurately synchronised and normalised without measuring the signal of input excitation. The research conducted for the full-scale transmission tower results in modal parameters, estimated by classical and pseudo-impulse methods. The applied pseudo-impulse improves the conditioning of the excitation and results in the better read... [more]

On the Water-Oil Relative Permeabilities of Southern Algerian Sandstone Rock Samples
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Operations
Keywords: capillary pressure, oil recovery, relative permeability, wettability
The water−oil relative permeability behavior of different plugs from the Hassi Messaoud reservoir in south Algeria has been investigated to understand the fundamental processes of two-phase flow taking place within the macro-structure of rock samples. The experiments were conducted on cylindrical reservoir samples (plugs) using the unsteady-state method to measure the oil−water relative permeabilities due to operational simplicity. The impact of factors such as wettability, overburden pressure and rock characteristics based on the relative permeability curves have been carefully assessed. During this test, temperature was kept in the range of 95 to 100 °C and pressure was maintained at 100 bar. Large variations in relative permeability curve trends have been experimentally observed for different rock samples under investigation, which can be explained by the heterogeneous nature of the studied reservoir. Results showed an intermediate alteration of wettability and for all studied sampl... [more]

Multi-Port Multi-Directional Converter with Multi-Mode Operation and Leakage Energy Recycling for Green Energy Processing
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Operations
Keywords: galvanic isolation, high conversion ratio, leakage energy recycling, multi-port multi-directional converter, single stage
In this article, a novel multi-port multi-directional converter (MPMDC) is proposed. Even though the power stage of the MPMDC belongs to a single-stage structure, it can control power flow direction handily among ports and achieve converter operation in up to five modes. The MPMDC has the feature of galvanic isolation and can obtain a high voltage conversion ratio even under the adoption of only one inductor and one transformer. The leakage energy of the transform can be recycled to improve overall efficiency. Once the MPMDC is applied to deal with renewable energy, battery, and bus energy, the advantage of multi-directional control of power flow can advance an energy storage system to perfectly function power conditioning feature. In addition to the discussion of converter operation, voltage gain, voltage stress, current stress, and inductance design are analyzed theoretically. Comparisons with some of the latest similar converters are also carried out. A 200-W prototype is built and... [more]

Determining the Power and Capacity of Electricity Storage in Cooperation with the Microgrid for the Implementation of the Price Arbitration Strategy of Industrial Enterprises Installation
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Operations
Keywords: BESS management, Energy Efficiency, microgrid, price arbitration, shift load
The growing worldwide costs of energy produced as a result of conventional fuel combustion, the limited capacity of the distribution grid, and the growing number of unstable installations based on renewable energy sources increase the need to implement systems of stabilization and regulate loads for end users. The battery energy storage system (BESS) that operates in the internal microgrid of an enterprise enables the management of the accumulated energy in any time zone of the day. Using a price arbitrage strategy with an electricity storage facility, we can reduce the cost of high electricity prices during peak demand periods. This study aims to determine the most effective method of setting up the capacity and electrical power of an energy storage system operating in a microgrid, in an enterprise to implement a price arbitration strategy. Such a method should include consideration of the characteristics of the demand profile of consumer systems, the charges related to electricity, a... [more]

Preliminary Experimental Research on the Influence of Counterbalance Valves on the Operation of a Heavy Hydraulic Manipulator during Long-Range Straight-Line Movement
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Operations
Keywords: accuracy, counterbalance valve, hydraulic drive system, manipulator
The effective use of robotic manipulators is particularly important when carrying out hazardous tasks. Often, for this type of mission, manipulators equipped with a hydraulic drive system are used, and their work results primarily from the implementation of precise movements through their effectors. In heavy manipulators, limiting the uncontrolled movement resulting from high inertia and relatively low stiffness has an impact on the improvement of the control precision. Therefore, the paper presents experimental studies that allow the assessment of the impact of the use of counterbalance valves on the precision and dynamics of a manipulator with a hydrostatic drive system. The tests were carried out for a wide range of effector velocities along a horizontal trajectory, on the basis of which, it was found that it was possible to improve the precision and dynamics of the work of such manipulators due to the precision of the trajectory and pressures in the drive system.

Impact of Wind Power Plant Operation on Voltage Quality Parameters—Example from Poland
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Operations
Keywords: power quality, voltage asymmetry, voltage distortion, wind energy
In Poland, there has been a steady increase in the share of wind-generated energy in the overall energy balance of the country. However, wind power plants belong to unstable energy sources—the amount of generated power is variable in time. Variable generation may cause problems with the quality of energy transmitted in electricity networks. Therefore, this article presents the results of field tests of the impact of the Vestas V90 2 MW wind turbine on selected voltage quality parameters occurring in the grid. Due to the multifaceted influence of the power plant on the parameters of the grid to which it is connected, the article focuses only on four selected parameters: voltage value, zero and reverse asymmetry, and the value of the voltage distortion factor. The research conducted by the authors confirmed the positive influence of the operation of the wind power plant on the quality parameters of the electricity transmitted through the power grid. An increase in the power generated in... [more]

Subject: Process Operations
Keywords: AC/DC hybrid microgrid, game model, game theory, Nash equilibrium, smart grid
To maximize the benefits of microgrid clusters, a general model and analysis method for studying the optimized operation of AC/DC microgrid clusters using non-cooperative games is proposed. This paper first establishes the optimized objective function of an AC/DC microgrid for economic operations. Based on the supply and demand theory, the dynamic adjustment mechanism of electricity price is introduced into microgrid clusters, and a game model for the optimal operation of multiple microgrids is established. The Nash equilibrium solution of the established model is obtained by iterative search algorithm, and the convergence of the Nash equilibrium solution is also proven. Finally, the validity and economy of the proposed model are verified by the actual case.

The Analytical Model for the Impact Assessment of the Magnetic Treatment of Oil on the Wax Deposition Rate on the Tubing Wall
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Operations
Keywords: analytical model, magnetic treatment, time between overhauls, wax deposition, wax precipitation
There has been a large amount of experience in recent decades in the use of magnetic fields on reservoir fluids. This paper discusses the effect of a magnetic field on wax precipitation. An analytical model is developed to quantify the wax deposition rate on the tubing surface during the magnetic treatment of reservoir oil. It has been established that the passage of the oil flow through a non-uniform magnetic field causes a high-intensity electric field for a sufficiently long period of time, the effect of which decreases the solubility of wax in oil, increases the intensity of wax precipitation in oil, and reduces the wax deposition on the tubing surface. The model accounts for the fact that the wax deposits present on the tubing surface are a highly efficient heat insulator that changes the temperature regime of the flow and the temperature of the tubing wall. This circumstance changes the rate of deposits but does not make these deposits less harmful to wells’ operation. A method f... [more]

Experimental Investigation of the Steady-State Flow Field with Particle Image Velocimetry on a Nozzle Check Valve and Its Dynamic Behaviour on the Pipeline System
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Operations
Keywords: dynamic behavior, hydraulic loss, nozzle check valve, piping system, PIV
In the present work, to investigate the hydraulic losses and safe operation of nozzle check valves in industrial piping systems, the static characteristics of the valve and its dynamic behavior in the pipeline system were studied using an experimental bench with a visual DN300 nozzle check valve. Besides, basing on the PIV (Particle Image Velocimetry) technique measures the valve steady-state flow field under the different flow rates. The study has shown that as the flow rate rises, the valve disc displacement slowly increases to 44 mm, then rapidly increases to a maximum displacement of 72 mm. When the Reynolds number exceeds 5 × 105, the relationship between pressure drop and flow obeys a quadratic function. The local vortex area formed by the flow passage near the downstream deflector expands with the flow improvement. As the increase of flowrate, at low flow operating conditions, the downstream flow velocity in the local high-speed area near the valve body increases; at medium oper... [more]

Water Content in Transformer Insulation System: A Review on the Detection and Quantification Methods
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Operations
Keywords: Energy, insulation, quantification methods, transformer, water detection
Water can be an irritant to a power transformer, as it is recognized as a major hazard to the operation of transformers. The water content of a transformer insulation system comprises the water in the transformer insulation oil and in the cellulose paper. The increase in the water content in the insulation system leads to reduced breakdown voltage, accelerated aging of the oil−paper insulation system, and the possibility of producing bubbles at high temperatures. Therefore, various techniques have been applied to measure the water content in both oil and paper insulation. This article comprehensively reviews and analyzes the methods (technically or nontechnically) that have been used to monitor the water content in transformer insulation systems. Apart from discussing the advantages and major drawbacks of these methods, the accuracy, measurement time, and cost of each technique are also elucidated in this review. The Structural and Electromagnetic Comparative Analysis of the Bifilar-Meander-Type Winding Method of Superconducting DC Circuit Breaker
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Operations
Keywords: bifilar method, DC circuit breaker, hybrid type, Maxwell program, meander type, superconducting fault-current-limiter
As the utilization of DC systems increases worldwide, the importance of DC cutoff technology is increasing. We proposed a hybrid DC cutoff technology combining an SFCL (superconducting fault-current-limiter) and a mechanical DC circuit breaker. This model can perform a fault-current-limiting operation through the quenching of the SFCL and a breaking operation through an artificial cutoff zero point of a mechanical DC circuit breaker. In particular, the SFCL is responsible for the growth of the initial fault current according to the DC characteristics. As the DC system’s supply and demand increase, the DC system’s capacity also increases. Therefore, the fault-current-limiting capability of the SFCL should be increased according to the increasing DC system breaking capacity. The fault-current-limiting capability can be increased by increasing the superconducting wires used in the SFCL. Current commercially available SFCLs use bifilar-helical-type and bifilar-spiral-type winding methods.... [more]

Keywords: deformable structures, magnetostriction, power take-off, short-term operation, Wave Energy
This paper presents work on a wave energy device with an on-board power take-off based on a magnetostrictively actuated deformable structure. Such devices potentially could be used in low-cost, short-term expeditionary operations. The paper discusses an analytical model that describes the heave oscillations of a buoy with two inclined, overhanging beams with magnetostrictive strips affixed to them. This work comprises the first steps toward an analytical model that would enable potential users to obtain quick power estimates at the planning stage. Here, the fully nonlinear magneto-mechanical-electrical constitutive relations are linearized about a desirable operating point, and a coupled dynamic model is derived using a variational formulation that includes buoy heave, flexural oscillations of the two beams, and the voltage response of the magnetostrictive strips. Energy conversion performance in wind-sea-dominated Pierson−Moskowitz spectra is found to be modest. However, present resul... [more]
