Abdul Kalam, Weihu Cheng, Dionisis Stefanatos, Sayed Kifayat Shah
June 5, 2024 (v1)
Keywords: Burr XII distribution, generalized intuitionistic fuzzy probability (GenIFP), generalized intuitionistic fuzzy reliability characteristics (GenIFRCs), new type generalized intuitionistic fuzzy set (GenIFS), α,β-cut sets
Intuitionistic fuzzy sets provide a viable framework for modelling lifetime distribution characteristics, particularly in scenarios with measurement imprecision. This is accomplished by utilizing membership and non-membership degrees to accurately express the complexities of data uncertainty. Nonetheless, the complexities of some cases necessitate a more advanced approach of imprecise data, motivating the use of generalized intuitionistic fuzzy sets (GenIFSs). The use of GenIFSs represents a flexible modeling strategy that is characterized by the careful incorporation of an extra level of hesitancy, which effectively clarifies the underlying ambiguity and uncertainty present in reliability evaluations. The study employs a methodology based on generalized intuitionistic fuzzy distributions to thoroughly examine the uncertainty related to the parameters and reliability characteristics present in the Burr XII distribution. The goal is to provide a more accurate evaluation of reliability m... [more]

Subject: Biosystems
Keywords: anaerobic digestion, Capsicum annuum, epicatechin, ferulic acid, myricetin, polyphenols, procyanidins, quercetin
Pepper processing waste has the potential to be used as a substrate in the process of anaerobic digestion, but because of its high polyphenol content, certain limitations are expected. During the determination of the biodegradability of pepper samples, a biogas potential of 687 L/kg DM was observed, as well as a biomethane potential of 401 L/kg DM. While both the testing of biodegradability and the process in the pilot scale progressed, it was observed that total polyphenol content in both cases decreased. Also, as far as individual polyphenols during the process in the pilot scale are concerned, it can be observed that at the end of the process no procyanidin A2, epicatechin, myricetin, and quercetin were detected. The observed concentration of the ferulic acid on the last day of the process was 0.09 µg/g. Finally, it can be concluded that the presence of polyphenols did not significantly affect the biogas potential of pepper waste. Due to its relatively stable biogas production, as f... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: carbon dioxide–water–shale interaction, CO2 quasi-dry fracturing, permeability, shale
The physical properties of shale reservoirs are typically poor, necessitating the use of fracturing technology for effective development. However, the high clay content prevalent in shale formations poses significant challenges for conventional hydraulic fracturing methods. To address this issue, CO2-based fracturing fluid has been proposed as an alternative to mitigate the damage caused by water-based fracturing fluids. In this paper, the applicability of quasi-dry CO2 fracturing in shale reservoirs is examined from three key perspectives: the viscosity of CO2 fracturing fluid, the fracture characteristics induced by the CO2 fracture fluid, and the potential reservoir damage caused by the fracturing fluid. Firstly, the viscosity of CO2 fracturing fluid was determined by a rheological experiment. Rheological tests revealed that the viscosity of CO2 fracturing fluid was significantly influenced by the water−carbon ratio. Specifically, when the water−carbon ratio was 30:70, the maximum v... June 5, 2024 (v1)
Keywords: decision making, entropy weight, green design, hesitant fuzzy set, remanufacturing
Designs for remanufacturing (DfRem) consider the remanufacturability of the product in the early stages of product design, which can greatly increase the reusability of the products. However, product design schemes lack reasonable evaluation indicators for remanufacturability, and the decision-makers of the design scheme have subjective preferences and vague hesitation. These result in inaccurate decision making on DfRem schemes that will affect the successful implementation of product remanufacturing. In order to improve the accuracy of the DfRem scheme decision, a fuzzy decision-making method for green design for remanufacturability is proposed. Firstly, an evaluation indicator system for green design schemes was established that takes into account remanufacturability, reliability, cost, and the environment, and the entropy weighting method is used to quantify and weigh the design scheme evaluation indicators. Then, the hesitation fuzzy set is applied to construct the set of evaluati... [more]

Keywords: air conditioning, cooling load, geothermal, ground heat exchanger, heat pump, heating load, TRNSYS
Kuwait stands as one of the hottest locations globally, experiencing scorching temperatures that can soar to 50 °C during the summer months. Conversely, in the winter months of December and January, temperatures may plummet to less than 10 °C. Maintaining a comfortable temperature indoors necessitates a substantial amount of energy, particularly during the scorching summer seasons. In Kuwait, most of the electrical energy required for functions such as air conditioning and lighting is derived from fossil fuel resources, contributing to escalating air pollution and global warming. To reduce dependence on conventional energy sources for heating and cooling, this article presents a case study to explore the potential of using geothermal energy for space heating and cooling in Kuwait. The case study involves utilizing a geothermal heat pump (water-sourced heat pump) in conjunction with a vertical-borehole ground heat exchanger (VBGHE). The mentioned system is deployed to regulate the clima... [more]

Keywords: horizontal well, hydraulic fracturing, numerical simulation, proppant transportation, transverse fracture
Proppant transport and distribution law in hydraulic fractures has important theoretical and field guidance significance for the optimization design of hydraulic fracturing schemes and accurate production prediction. Many studies aim to understand proppant transportation in complex fracture systems. Few studies, however, have addressed the flow path mechanism between the transverse fracture and horizontal well, which is often neglected in practical design. In this paper, a series of mathematical equations, including the rock elastic deformation equation, fracturing fluid continuity equation, fracturing fluid flow equation, and proppant continuity equation for the proppant transport, were established for the transverse fracture of a horizontal well, while the finite element method was used for the solution. Moreover, the two-dimensional radial flow was considered in the proppant transport modeling. The results show that proppant breakage, embedding, and particle migration are harmful to... [more]

Keywords: complex natural fracture, fracture morphology, hydraulic fracture, propagation mechanism, rock mechanics parameters
The propagation of hydraulic fractures is highly influenced by the geological structure of the reservoir in unconventional reservoirs, such as natural fractures. In this paper, a new fluid−solid coupling dynamic model was built which presents the failure mechanism of hydraulic fracture with pre-existing simple and complex natural fractures. The cohesive element method and the maximum principal stress fracture criterion were used in the new model. An analysis was conducted to investigate the impact of various factors, including encounter angle, in situ stress, elastic modulus, and Poisson’s ratio, on the propagation of hydraulic fractures. The simulation results indicate that the encounter angle and the in situ stress are the main factors affecting the fracture morphology. When the encounter angle and the in situ stress difference are small, hydraulic fractures propagate along natural fractures. When the elastic modulus is small, it is advantageous for the advancement of both hydraulic... [more]

Keywords: bending pressure drop, CFD-DEM, particle flow characteristic, pneumatic conveying, wheat particle
Energy consumption is one of the important indicators of green development. The pressure drop and the particle kinetic energy loss in the pipe bend result in high energy consumption of wheat pneumatic conveying. In this paper, the CFD-DEM method is used to study the characteristics of flow field in horizontal pipe bend. The results show that the particles converge together under the force of the curved pipe wall to form a particle rope. With increasing pipe bend ratio R/D, the aggregation of particle bundles becomes stronger and the particle spiral phenomenon decreases. The particles impact the pipe wall at an angular position of θ = 30−60° around the bend, and their velocity decreases slowly under the friction resistance of the pipe wall. The velocity loss caused by particles impacting on the pipe wall increases with increasing initial velocity. When the particle mass flow rate is 1.26 kg/s and the gas velocity is 10 m/s, the pressure drop in the bend decreases and then increases with... [more]

Keywords: distillation system, Heat Exchanger Network, MTO, Optimization, PSO
The separation section of the methanol-to-olefin (MTO) process is energy-intensive, and the optimization and heat integration can enhance energy efficiency and reduce costs. A bi-level optimization model framework is proposed to optimize the separation process and simultaneously integrate the heat exchanger network (HEN). The upper level employs a data-driven BP neural network proxy model instead of the mechanism model for the separation process, while the lower level adopts a stage-wise superstructure for the HEN without stream splits. The interaction between the two systems is realized effectively through information exchange. A bi-level particle swarm algorithm is employed to optimize complex problems and determine the optimal operational parameters for the distillation system and HEN. Compared with the typical sequential synthesis method, the optimization by the proposed approach reduces the total annual cost by 1.4293×106 USD/y, accounting for 4.76%.

In this study, polymer shear-thinning experiments are firstly conducted to explore polymer variations with flow rate. The novelty of the research is that varying polymer viscosity is implemented instead of the fixed-fluid viscosity that is conventionally used. The fitted correlation is then integrated into the 2D and 3D heterogeneous numerical models for simulations, and a multivariate nonlinear regression analysis is performed based on the simulation results. Biaxial compression tests based on an elliptical tunnel were conducted to study the failure characteristics and the meso-crack evolution mechanism of tunnels with different cross-sections constructed in sandstone. The progressive crack propagation process around the elliptical tunnel was investigated using a real-time digital image correlation (DIC) system. Numerical simulations were performed on egg-shaped, U-shaped, and straight-walled arched tunnels based on the mesoscopic parameters of the elliptical tunnel and following the principle of an equal cross-sectional area. The meso-crack evolution and stress conditions of the four types of tunnels were compared. The results show that (1) fractures around an elliptical tunnel were mainly distributed at the end of the long axis and mainly induce slabbing failure, and the failure mode is similar to a V-shaped notch; (2) strain localization is an important characteristic of rock fracturing, which forebodes the initiation, propagation, and c...
