Evaluating Pre- and Post-Coagulation Configuration of Dissolved Air Flotation Using Response Surface Methodology
June 3, 2020 (v1)
Subject: Process Operations
Keywords: coagulants, Coagulation, dissolved air flotation, oil refinery wastewater, response surface methodology
The effects of coagulation-dissolved air flotation (DAF) process configuration was studied on oil refinery wastewater. The configuration was done in two ways: acid-coagulation-DAF (pre-treatment) and acid-DAF-coagulation (post-treatment). Two different cationic and polymeric organic coagulants were employed in this study to compare their treatability performance with the two aforementioned configurations. All the coagulants applied before the DAF were found to be effective, with over 85% more contaminant removal efficiency than their post-treatment. Alum, being the most cost-effective coagulant, was then employed with response surface methodology (RSM) to obtain the optimum conditions. These include a coagulant dosage of 100 mg/L, air saturator pressure of 375 kPa and air−water ratio of 10% vol/vol corresponding to a desirability of 92% for the removal of oily pollutants from a local South Africa oil refinery’s wastewater. With the response quadratic models that were developed, the opt... [more]

An Optimal Sizing of Stand-Alone Hybrid PV-Fuel Cell-Battery to Desalinate Seawater at Saudi NEOM City
June 3, 2020 (v1)
Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: Environmentally-friendly, hybrid PV/FC/BS, hydrogen storage system, Saudi NEOM City, seawater desalination plant
NEOM City in Saudi Arabia is planned to be the first environmentally friendly city in the world that is powered by renewable energy sources minimizing CO2 emissions to reduce the effect of global warming according to Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030. In recent years, Saudi Arabia has had a problem with water scarcity. The main factors affecting water security are unequal water distribution, wrong use of water resources and using bad or less efficient irrigation techniques. This paper is aimed to provide a detailed feasibility and techno-economic evaluation of using several scenarios of a stand-alone hybrid renewable energy system to satisfy the electrical energy needs for an environmentally friendly seawater desalination plant which feeds 150 m−3 day−1 of freshwater to 1000 people in NEOM City, Saudi Arabia. The first scenario is based on hybrid solar photovoltaic PV, fuel cells (FC) with a hydrogen storage system and batteries system (BS), while the second and third scenarios are based on h... [more]

Load Frequency Control of Pumped Storage Power Station Based on LADRC
June 3, 2020 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: generating operation, linear active disturbance rejection control (LADRC), load frequency control (LFC), pumped storage power station, pumping operation
The pumped storage power station has the characteristics of frequency-phase modulation, energy saving, and economy, and has great development prospects and application value. In order to cope with the large-scale integration and intermittency of renewable energy and improve the ability of pumped storage units to participate in power grid frequency modulation, this paper proposed a load frequency control (LFC) strategy for pumped storage units based on linear active disturbance rejection technology. Firstly, based on the operating characteristics of the pumped storage power station, the LFC model of the two-area reheat steam turbine under nonlinear conditions such as governor dead zone and generation rate constrains was established. Secondly, a second-order linear active disturbance rejection control (LADRC) was designed. The feasibility and control performance of the proposed LFC system were quantitatively analyzed through simulation. The results show that the LADRC has better control... [more]

Framing the MHD Micropolar-Nanofluid Flow in Natural Convection Heat Transfer over a Radiative Truncated Cone
June 3, 2020 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: magnetic field, micropolar-nanofluid, natural convection, thermal radiation
Recently, nanoparticles have supplied diverse challenges in the area of science. The nanoparticles suspended in several conventional fluids can convert the fluids flow and heat transmission features. In this investigation, the mathematical approach is utilized to explore the magnetohydrodynamics micropolar-nanofluid flow through a truncated porous cone. In this mathematical model, non-linear radiation and suction/injection phenomena are also scrutinized with the Tiwari-Das nanoliquid pattern. The designed system of the mathematical model of the boundary value problem is converted to a set of dimensionless non-similar equations applying convenient transformations. In this study, kerosene oil is selected as the base fluid, while the nanoparticles of Fe3O4 are utilized to promote the heat transmission rate. The problem is solved numerically using the Runge-Kutta-Fehlberg method (RKF45). It is demonstrated that an enhancement in the pertinent parameters improves the heat transmission rate.

Technoeconomic Analysis of a Waste Tire to Liquified Synthetic Natural Gas (SNG) energy system
June 1, 2020 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: CO2 capture,, Gasification, Rubber, Synthetic Natural Gas (SNG), Waste tire, Waste-to-Energy
Thermochemical conversion of solid wastes through gasification offers the
dual benefit of production of high-value fuels and environmentally friendly
waste disposal. In this paper, we propose a novel process for production of
liquified synthetic natural gas (SNG) from waste tires via a rotary kiln gasification process. We use a combination of experimental data available in the
open literature, first principles mathematical models and empirical models to
study three design cases (without CCS, with precombustion CCS and with
pre- and postcombustion CCS) in two locations (USA and Norway). The
thermodynamic, economic and environmental performance of the concept is
studied. The results show that minimum selling prices of 16.7, 17.5 and 19.9
$/GJ_LHV,SNG are required for USA and 20.9, 21.8 and 24.9 $/GJ_LHV,SNG
for Norway. We note that these prices may become competitive under certain
regulatory conditions (such as recent public policy movement in British
