Sustainable Energy Development and Climate Change Mitigation at the Local Level through the Lens of Renewable Energy: Evidence from Lithuanian Case Study
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Energy Efficiency, financial instruments, local level, sustainable energy development, SWOT
The penetration of renewable energy is one of the main challenges for sustainable energy development. Local governments across the European Union commit to development and implementation of the Sustainable Energy (and Climate) Action Plan. This paper focuses on the case of Lithuania—a Central and Eastern European country. Almost one-third of Lithuanian municipalities have joined the Covenant of Mayors and prepared the plans that include SWOT analysis. However, there is a lack of information on how those plans contribute to climate change mitigation and sustainable energy development. This study identifies the links between key policy financial instruments, increasing energy efficiency. The Strategic Action Plans aimed at reducing GHG emissions and energy consumption in Lithuanian municipalities are analyzed. The challenges in promoting the renewable energy generation in Lithuanian rural regions are discussed. Moreover, the importance of strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats... [more]

Hybrid Energy Efficiency Friendly Frequency Domain TR Algorithm Based on PSO Algorithm Evaluated by Novel Maximizing HPA Efficiency Evaluation Criteria
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: 5G, Energy Efficiency, HPA, IBO, MER, OFDM, PAPR, PSO, PSO, TR
Smart Grids (SGs) expedite secure, large-scale and efficient two-way communication between the power supply and management, but under a sophisticated 5G communication infrastructure, the multi carrier system is the principle system. The high peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) is one of the significant limitations of the 5G multi carrier (MC) system, as it impedes the efficient design of the 5G analogue front end. Tone reservation (TR) is a highly efficient scheme without signal distortion, which is designed by increasing the freedom in the frequency domain for PAPR reduction. In this paper, a particle swarm optimization (PSO) based TR (PSO-TR) scheme proceeding with an optimal input power back off-modulation error ratio (IBO-MER) convergence criterion is proposed to improve high power amplifier (HPA) efficiency for OFDM systems. A probabilistic analysis of TR predistribution and freedom in the frequency domain, in relationship with the amplitude of its constituent samples, is carried o... [more]

Parameters Affecting Dust Collector Efficiency for Pneumatic Conveying: A Review
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: dust collector, Energy Efficiency, fluid mechanics, industrial control, multiphase flows, pneumatic conveying
In a context of energy abundance for industrial applications, industrial systems are exploited with minimal attention to their actual energy consumption requirements to meet the loads imposed on them. As a result, most of them are used at maximal capacity, regardless of the varying operational conditions. First, the paper studies pneumatic conveying systems and thoroughly reviews previously published work. Then, we overview simulations and operating data of the experimental parameters and their effects on the flow characteristics and transport efficiency. Finally, we summarize with a conclusion and some suggestions for further work. The primary goal of this study is to identify the parameters that influence the energy consumption of industrial dust collector systems. It is differentiated from previously published overviews by being concentrated on wood particles collection systems. The results will permit a better selection of an appropriate methodology or solution for reducing an indu... [more]

Supporting Local Authorities to Plan Energy Efficiency in Public Buildings: From Local Needs to Regional Planning
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: capacity building, Energy Efficiency, public authorities, public buildings, renewable energy technologies
The support offered to local authorities in this work consisted of technical and economic training on the integration of energy efficiency measures as well as the development of tools (guidelines, a decision support tool, databases and a visualization platform) that allow local authorities to prepare their building renovation plans. These tools are found very useful for local authorities, particularly in the case of Teruel province, characterised by many small municipalities whose local governments do not have the technical staff to undertake this type of planning. As a result of this work, an energy action plan was elaborated for the implementation of 96 energy efficiency measures in public buildings of Teruel province. The execution of this plan would allow energy savings of 1.3 MWh/year and 245 tonsCO2e/year of CO2 emission reduction, involving an investment of EUR 1.2 M. The close collaboration with public authorities made it possible to assess the strengths and weaknesses of using... [more]

Microgrid Operation Optimization Using Hybrid System Modeling and Switched Model Predictive Control
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: Energy Efficiency, hybrid systems modeling, microgrid economic optimization, microgrid modeling, Model Predictive Control, smart cities, smart grids
Optimization of economic aspects of microgrid operation in both grid-connected and islanded mode leads to contradictive definitions of optimality for both modes. There is no general agreement on how to cope with this duality. To address this issue, as well as modern energy market requirements and a better renewable energy utilization necessity in the case of large facilities, a comprehensive control solution utilizing the appropriate model is needed. In response, the authors propose a hybrid microgrid model covering fundamental features and designed to work in conjunction with two switched receding horizon control laws. A relevant controller is chosen according to the current microgrid operation mode and its cost function tailored to specific demands of the islanded or grid-connected operation. Performed research led to a new switched hybrid model predictive control approach focused on microgrid economic optimization. This approach utilizes an appropriate hybrid microgrid model also co... Does Energy Community Membership Change Sustainable Attitudes and Behavioral Patterns? Empirical Evidence from Community Wind Energy in Germany
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: behavior change, community energy, Energy Efficiency, hierarchical logistic regression, pro-environmental behavior, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, social acceptance
Community energy is seen as a helping hand for local, decentralized energy transition. Besides the main goal of supporting the community-friendly and socially acceptable development of renewable energies, the hope is also that a pro-environmental influence on sustainability behavior will be triggered when joining a community energy project. An analysis of a survey among 16 community energy projects in Germany, with 565 completed questionnaires, shows that a certain part of the members pays more attention to their energy behavior and develop a more positive attitude towards a decentralized energy transition and citizen participation after joining the community energy project. Therefore, we can empirically support that climate protection projects, such as community energy, influence pro-environmental attitudes and behavior, but this does not apply equally to all population groups. Members with higher income and stronger interest in returns are less likely to change their behavior. Based... [more]

Providing Convenient Indoor Thermal Comfort in Real-Time Based on Energy-Efficiency IoT Network
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Energy Efficiency, Genetic Algorithm, indoor thermal comfort monitoring, IoT network, Machine Learning
Monitoring the thermal comfort of building occupants is crucial for ensuring sustainable and efficient energy consumption in residential buildings. It enables not only remote real-time detection of situations, but also a timely reaction to reduce the damage made by harmful situations in targeted buildings. In this paper, we first design a new Internet of Things (IoT) architecture in order to provide remote availability of both indoor and outdoor conditions, with respect to the limited energy of IoT devices. We then build a multi-output prediction model of indoor parameters using a random forest learning algorithm, and based on a longitudinal real dataset of one year. Our prediction model considers outdoor conditions to predict the indoor ones. Hence, it helps to detect discomfort situations in real-time when comparing predicted variables to real ones. Furthermore, when detecting an indoor thermal discomfort, we provide a new genetic-based algorithm to find the most suitable values of i... [more]

Subject: Process Control
Keywords: air quality, demand response, Energy Efficiency, nearly zero-energy buildings, smart grids, smart thermostat
Achieving nearly zero-energy buildings (nZEB) is one of the main objectives defined by the European Union for achieving carbon neutrality in buildings. nZEBs are heavily reliant on distributed renewable generation energy sources, which create new challenges associated with their inherent intermittency. To achieve nZEB levels, demand management plays an essential role to balance supply and demand. Since up to two-thirds of the total consumed energy in buildings is dispended for Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) operations, intelligent control of HVAC loads is of utmost importance. The present work aims to offer a solution to improve a building microgrids’ flexibility by shifting thermal loads and taking advantage of room thermal inertia. Innovation is present in using the internet of things to link several decentralized local microcontrollers with the microgrid and in the applicability of different control algorithms, such as the pre-emptive heating/cooling of a room. Achieving carbon neutrality by 2050 is one of the European Union’s key priorities. Yet, the attitude of numerous politicians, of the professional community, and of society in general towards the threat posed by climate change is ambivalent. Arguments are frequently heard about the transition to a low-carbon economy that will be very costly, with increased unemployment, and that in reality climate change may not even be that severe. Added to this, there are human rights and freedoms, and in the case of architects and designers, the right to freedom of creation, to choice of materials, etc. The present article seeks to show that the issue of sustainable architecture and construction is not a whim, but an absolute necessity, and that true freedom lies in recognizing this fact and adapting our actions accordingly. Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: drone battery life, Energy Efficiency, force-sensing resistor, lateral misalignment, multi-turn copper wire coil, power consumption, single tube loop aluminum coil, vertical alignment
Recent major advancements in drone charging station design are related to the differences in coil design between the material (copper or aluminum) and inner thickness (diameter design) to address power transfer optimization and increased efficiency. The designs are normally challenged with reduced weight on the drone’s side, which can lead to reduced payload or misalignment position issues between receiver and transmitter, limiting the performance of wireless charging. In this work, the coil combination was tested in vertical alignment from 2 cm to 50 cm, and in lateral misalignment positions that were stretched across 2, 5, 8, 10, and 15 cm ranges. Simulated and experimental results demonstrated improved transfer distances when the drone battery load was 100 Ω. With the proposed design, the vertical transfer power that was achieved was 21.12 W, 0.460 A, with 81.5% transfer efficiency, while the maximum lateral misalignment air gap that was achieved was 2 cm with 19.22 W and 74.15% eff... Particularly speaking, among all electric machines, the motors and their drives play a key role since they literally allow the motion interchange in the industrial processes; it could be said that they are the medullar column for moving the rest of the mechanical parts. Hence, their proper operation must be guaranteed in order to raise, as much as possible, their efficiency, and, as consequence, bring out the economic benefits. This review presents a general overview of the reported works that address the efficiency topic in motors and drives and in the power quality of the electric grid. This study speaks about the relationship existing between the motors and drives that induces electric disturbances into the grid, affecting its power quality, and also how these power disturbances present in the electrical network adversely affect, in turn,... The systematic comparison of the alternative processes using the PhO as a benchmark for the minimum input (exergy in this case) required to run a process with a certain benefit allows to determine the potential for optimization of each technology. Differences are analyzed by visualizing the losses of each individual production step in a process as well as by the resulting overall energy demand, including the primary energy. Possible alternatives are purchasing liquid oxygen from a cryogenic process or the production by means of Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA) on site.
