Eco-Efficient Ventilated Facades Based on Circular Economy for Residential Buildings as an Improvement of Energy Conditions
March 7, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: circular economy, eco-efficiency, Energy Efficiency, energy rehabilitation, facade, passive systems, recycling, Sustainability
In a planet with limited resources, climate change is a severe problem, intensified by industrial development. This is particularly important in the construction sector. According to the International Energy Agency (2021), the construction sector is responsible for 40% of the global energy consumption and 36% of CO2 emissions. In this way, sustainable architectural solutions should be a priority in our fight against climate change, for it is necessary to propose solutions that help to reuse existing resources, thus reducing consumption. In this sense, the rehabilitation of buildings with solutions that favor the circular economy will become a key element in the construction sector. This work provides the design of a facade for building rehabilitation based on the circular economy paradigm, which is implanted in a model building as a case study. The HULC tool quantifies the improvement in energy efficiency that this rehabilitation entails when compared to a conventional facade. With the... [more]

A Comparative Analysis of Energy and Water Consumption of Mined versus Synthetic Diamonds
March 7, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: carbon footprint, chemical vapor deposition, diamond mining, diamond synthesis, Energy Efficiency, high-pressure, high-temperature, water intake
In our research, we analyzed the energy and water consumption in diamond mining and laboratory synthesis operations. We used publicly available reports issued by two market leaders, DeBeers and ALROSA, to estimate water and energy use per carat of a rough diamond. The efficiency of the two most popular synthesis technologies for artificial diamonds—High-Pressure-High-Temperature (HPHT) and Microwave-assisted Chemical Vapor Deposition (M-CVD)—was examined. We found that the modern HPHT presses, with open cooling circuits, consume about 36 kWh/ct when producing gem-quality and average-sized (near-) colorless diamonds. ALROSA and DeBeers use about 96 kWh/ct and 150 kWh/ct, respectively, including all energy required to mine. Energy consumption of M-CVD processes can be different and depends on technological conditions. Our M-CVD machine is the least energy-efficient, requiring about 215 kWh/ct in the single-crystal regime, using 2.45-GHz magnetron for the support synthesis. The M-CVD meth... [more]

Simulating the Impact of Daytime Calibration in the Behavior of a Closed Loop Proportional Lighting Control System
March 7, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: artificial lighting, daylight harvesting, Energy Efficiency, energy savings, lighting control, photo-sensors
A daylighting control system that uses the closed loop proportional algorithm needs to be calibrated both during nighttime and daytime. The selection of the daytime calibration time can affect the behavior of the system and is usually performed when the ratio of the illuminance of the ceiling sensor (SD) to the illuminance at a point on the working plane (ED) is relatively large without sunlight patches in the ceiling photo-sensor’s field of view (FOV). However, this requirement is not associated with a specific value and can be achieved under a wide range of conditions related to the sky luminance distribution. In the present work, four ceiling sensors with different field of views (FOVs) were examined in a typical north-facing office space. The effect of daytime calibration on the system’s performance was estimated through the calculation of lighting energy savings and the overdimming percentage. The results show that the effect of both the FOV of the ceiling sensor and the daytime c... [more]

Evaluation of Primary User Power Impact for Joint Optimization of Energy Efficiency in Cognitive Radio Networks
March 7, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: Energy Efficiency, optimal sensing ratio, primary user reactivation, sensing performance, spectrum sensing
Energy efficiency (EE) is of great concern in cognitive radio networks since the throughput and energy consumption of secondary users (SUs) vary with the sensing time. However, the conditions of the detection probability and false alarm probability should be respected to better protect primary users (PUs) and to improve the sensing performance of SUs. Additionally, the PUs’ minimum averaged power provision should also be regarded as a key problem of interactive linking to SUs. Therefore, an integrated design between the PU and SUs is desired for the coordination of the whole cognitive radio system, especially regarding the satisfaction of EE and performance metrics. This study formulates sensing constraints in a unified way and calculates the minimum SNR of SUs, based on which the essential PU power provision is computed. Furthermore, EE is proved as a decreasing function with the PU’s active ratio, where the maximum EE is obtained corresponding to the minimum QoS requirements of the s... [more]

Evaluating Insulation, Glazing and Airtightness Options for Passivhaus EnerPHit Retrofitting of a Dwelling in China’s Hot Summer−Cold Winter Climate Region
March 7, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: building envelope, Energy Efficiency, energy retrofitting, parametric analysis, Passivhaus EnerPHit standard
Passivhaus EnerPHit is a rigorous retrofit energy standard for buildings, based on high thermal insulation and airtightness levels, which aims to significantly reduce building energy consumption during operation. However, extra retrofit materials are required to achieve this standard, which raises a contradiction between how to balance the environmental impacts of the retrofitting material inputs and extremely low energy consumption after retrofit. This motivated the analysis in this paper, which aimed to evaluate the possibilities of reducing the required retrofitting material inputs when trying to achieve the EnerPHit energy standard using a typical suburban dwelling in China’s hot summer−cold winter climate region as a case study. Firstly, how the insulation performance of each envelope component affected the building’s energy consumption was analysed. Based on this, sensitivity simulations of combinations of different insulation levels with different fabric components were investig... [more]

Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: Energy Efficiency, policy tools, residential buildings
The European Union has set an ambitious goal to tackle climate change, and energy efficiency in the residential sector is among the measures required to close the gap between targeted and actual greenhouse gas emissions. While different policy tools have been applied, the diffusion rate of these measures remains low. A system dynamics simulation model of the residential sector was developed to assess the advantages and drawbacks of energy efficiency policy in the multi-family building sector based on experience accumulated over the last twelve years in Latvia. The model was validated in expert group model building sessions and with historical trends. Simulating the model, a hypothesis was tested that supported the idea that seemingly positive policy tools set the stage for a series of unintended adverse effects due to the complex interactions between different system components. The common assumption that information and financial support should result in significant energy efficiency... [more]

Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: data centres, diffusion, electricity consumption, Energy Efficiency, technology adoption
Data centres are a key infrastructure for the global digital economy, helping enable the EU “Digital Decade” by 2030. In 2015, data centres were estimated to consume 2.5% of EU electricity demand. In Ireland, the concentrated presence of data centres could consume 37% of national electricity demand by 2028. The uncertainty of data centre facility-level energy efficiency paired with the need to achieve a low-carbon economy pose significant challenge for generation and transmission network planning. This is the first paper to apply a model of technology diffusion with a national forecast of changes in Irish data centre electricity demand through more efficient liquid cooling. The methodology serves as a technology-agnostic resource for practitioners performing forecasts under uncertainty with limited information. Results suggest that technology adoption could lower national electricity demand by 0.81% if adopted by new plant from 2019 to 2028. Savings rise to 3.16% over the same period i... [more]

Application of Smart Technologies in Metropolis GZM to Reduce Harmful Emissions in District Heating Systems
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: carbon emissions, decarbonization, district heating, Energy Efficiency, Hubgrade
Harmful emissions from heating installations have recently received public attention in Poland. Polish municipalities mainly take their heat from local district heating networks with large-scale coal-fired heat sources. Today, transition to nonemissive sources on this scale would be impractical. The easiest way to reduce carbon emissions is to limit heat consumption, but at the same time, to preserve thermal comfort, the application of smart technologies is necessary. Veolia operates on 71 district heating systems in Poland, including Warsaw, Lodz, and Poznan. Since heat consumption in Warsaw and Metropolis GZM is at a similar level, this is a case study of Hubgrade automation system application within the Warsaw district heating network. This paper also presents results of simulation of harmful emission reduction potential in Metropolis GZM. Simulation results show that there is a potential for saving approximately 275 kt of CO2 for the whole Metropolis GZM.

All the urban areas of developed countries have hydric distribution grids and sewage systems for collecting municipal wastewater to treatment plants. In this way, the municipal wastewater is purified from human excreta and other minor contaminants while producing excess sludges and purified water. In arid and semi-arid areas of the world, the purified water can be used, before discharging, to enhance the energy efficiency of seawater desalination and solve the problems of marine pollution created by desalination plants. Over the past half-century, seawater desalination has gradually met demand in urbanized, oil-rich, arid areas. At the same time, technological evolution has made it possible to significantly increase the energy efficiency of the plants and reduce the unit cost of the produced water. However, for some years, these trends have flattened out. The purified water passes through the hybridized desalination plant and produces renewable osmotic energy before the final discharge... Next-generation power systems aim at optimizing the energy consumption of household appliances by utilising computationally intelligent techniques, referred to as load monitoring. Non-intrusive load monitoring (NILM) is considered to be one of the most cost-effective methods for load classification. The objective is to segregate the energy consumption of individual appliances from their aggregated energy consumption. The extracted energy consumption of individual devices can then be used to achieve demand-side management and energy saving through optimal load management strategies. Machine learning (ML) has been popularly used to solve many complex problems including NILM. With the availability of the energy consumption datasets, various ML algorithms have been effectively trained and tested. Keywords: Energy Efficiency, on the route, optimizing, smooth running, trains, while approaching another train
This paper presents an innovative technique of traffic management on a route divided into fixed block distances for trains equipped with a continuous area data transmission system that ensures information exchange between a train and a control center. The originality of the technique is focused on the optimization of the following train’s speed profile in terms of energy consumption under the need to maintain a minimum distance to the preceding train and to assume the smooth running of the following train, using elements of fixed and mobile block distance methods. The obtained results are an answer to the question of whether it is possible to obtain a smoother movement of the train and savings in mechanical energy consumption if the speed profile of this train is adjusted to the conditions before the train, such as information about the speed of the preceding train.

The flyback converter has been widely used in Photovoltaic microinverters, operating either in Discontinuous, Boundary, or Continuous Conduction Mode (DCM, BCM, CCM). The recently proposed hybrid DBCM operation inherits the merits of both DCM and BCM. In this work, the necessary analytical equations describing the converter operation for any given condition under DBCM are derived, and are needed due to the hybrid nature of the modulation strategy during each sinusoidal wave. Based on this analysis, a design optimization sequence used to maximize the weighted efficiency of the inverter under DBCM is then applied. The design procedure is based on a power loss analysis for each converter component and focuses on the appropriate selection of the converter parameters.
