Contradictory Conservation: The Role of Leadership in Shaping Energy Efficiency Culture in Urban Residential Cooperative Buildings
Elizabeth Hewitt
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: behavior, Energy Efficiency, leadership, organizational culture, residential buildings
In addition to formalized leadership roles within organizations, leadership can also influence members through informal channels. This work argues that multifamily residential buildings can be viewed as organizations and, as such, explores the influence that informal leaders can wield in shaping culture around the motivation for conserving energy. This work draws on qualitative fieldwork conducted in a Brooklyn cooperative building. Findings indicate that the study building benefitted from the leadership of a long-standing board member, which contributed to the implementation of a number of energy efficiency initiatives. Interestingly, this leadership also led to a culture of cost efficiency over environmental concern as the motivating force behind these initiatives. This narrative was well disseminated, with most residents reporting that the building does not have a culture of conservation, despite a strong energy efficiency leaning. Thus, this work posits that leadership can greatly... [more]

April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: 4WD electric vehicle, decentralized traction system, driving force distribution, efficiency optimization, Energy Efficiency, traction control
In a battery-electric vehicle, a representative electric vehicle, there is a growing demand for performance and one-charge mileage improvement. As an alternative to such improvements, the capacity of the battery has been increased; however, due to the corresponding increase in the weight of the battery and the limited space in the vehicle, increasing the capacity of the battery also has limitations. Therefore, researches are being actively conducted to improve system operation efficiency to overcome such limitations. This paper proposes a distributing method of the driving forces to a battery-powered electric shuttle bus for last-mile mobility equipped with the decentralized driving system while taking into account voltage changes of the input terminals due to changes in the battery charge. The system operation efficiency changes were compared and evaluated by performing energy consumption analysis using ‘Manhattan Bus Driving Cycle’ at low voltage condition (SOC 20%). Various analyzes... [more]
A Comparative Analysis of Energy Consumption by Conventional and Anchor Based Dynamic Positioning of Ship
Andrzej Łebkowski, Jakub Wnorowski
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: anchor positioning systems, dynamic positioning system, Energy Efficiency, ship electric propulsion energy consumption
One of the requirements for ships equipped with dynamic positioning system is the ability to maintain a given position in various hydrometeorological conditions. At the same time, efforts at reducing electricity consumption are made in order to reduce operating costs and emissions of exhaust gases, such as sulfur oxides and greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide (CO2). For this purpose, the ship designer at the design stage must predict both how much energy the ship will theoretically use during operation and how the expenditure can be reduced. The publication presents a comparison of energy consumption with two different approaches to ship positioning: the use of classic dynamic positioning utilizing a set of thrusters and by using a set of anchors. In order to determine the energy consumption during positioning, the matrix method was used, on the basis of which the analysis of the ability to hold the position of the ship (capability plot) was performed, in accordance with the recomm... April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: cultural landscape, Energy Efficiency, lighting retrofit, lightscape, nocturnal image, public lighting, urban lighting
The technological innovation in the field of lighting and the need to reduce energy consumption connected to public lighting are leading many municipalities to undertake the renewal of public lighting systems, by replacing the existing luminaires with LED technologies. This renovation process is usually aimed at increasing energy efficiency and reducing maintenance costs, whist improving the lighting performance. To achieve these results, the new luminaires are often characterised by a luminous flux distribution much more downward oriented, which may remarkably influence and alter the perception of the night image of the sites. In this study the implications of the renovation of public lighting systems in terms of lighting and energy performance as well as the effects relating to the alteration of the night image, in historical contexts characterized by significant landscape value, are analysed. Results, along with demonstrating the positive effect that more sustainable and energy effi... [more]

April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Energy Efficiency, instrumental variable, Moran’s I, spatial quantile autoregression (SQAR)
This research mainly studies the factors influencing the efficiency of energy utilization. Firstly, by calculating Moran’sI and local indicators of spatial association (LISA) of energy efficiency of regions in mainland China, we found that energy efficiency shows obvious spatial autocorrelation and spatial clustering phenomena. Secondly, we established the spatial quantile autoregression (SQAR) model, in which the energy efficiency is the response variable with seven influence factors. The seven factors include industrial structure, resource endowment, level of economic development etc. Based on the provincial panel data (1998−2016) of mainland China (data source: China Statistical Yearbook, Statistical Yearbook of provinces), the findings indicate that level of economic development and industrial structure have a significant role in promoting energy efficient. Resource endowment, government intervention and energy efficiency show a negative correlation. However, the negative effect of... [more]

April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: CHP, energetic and economic optimization, Energy Efficiency, heat sources, municipal sewage sludge drying
The treatment of growing production of municipal sewage sludge has become a significant global problem. Drying of digested sewage sludge is a promising alternative to sludge disposal at dumping sites. The research objective of this study was to find the optimal heat source for a sludge drying plant in a large municipal sewage treatment plant (people equivalent: 250,000). Two boundary heat supply cases were analyzed in the paper: cogeneration of heat and power (CHP) units, internal combustion (IC) engines fired with natural gas, and plant supplied with a gas boiler. The aim of the research was to find the optimal size of the cogeneration unit cooperating with the gas boiler as heat sources for a given drying plant case with the maximum net present (NPV) value as the objective function. The results of the conducted optimization show higher profitability of cases with larger cogeneration unit. For the basic assumptions, the maximum NPV is obtained for the largest analyzed CHP unit: 1300 k... [more]

Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, Energy Efficiency, forced ventilation, natural ventilation, timber construction, ventilated façade
Ventilated façades can help to reduce summer building thermal loads and, therefore, energy consumption due to air-conditioning systems thanks to the combined effect of the solar radiation reflection and the natural or forced ventilation into the cavity. The evaluation of ventilated façades behavior and performance is complex and requires a complete thermo-fluid dynamic analysis. In this study, a computational fluid dynamic (CFD) methodology has been developed for the complete assessment of the energy performance of a prefabricated timber−concrete composite ventilated façade module in different operating conditions. Global numerical results are presented as well as local ones in terms of heat flux, air velocity, and temperature inside the façade cavity. The results show the dependency of envelope efficiency on solar radiation, the benefits that natural convection brings on potential energy savings and the importance of designing an optimized façade geometry. The results concerning the f... [more]

Keywords: cost–benefit analysis, Energy Efficiency, energy efficiency gap, energy services, transaction costs
In order to calculate the financial return of energy efficiency measures, a cost−benefit analysis (CBA) is a proven tool for investors. Generally, however, most CBAs for investors have a narrow focus, which is—simply speaking—on investment costs compared with energy cost savings over the life span of the investment. This only provides part of the full picture. Ideally, a comprehensive or extended CBA would take additional benefits as well as additional costs into account. The objective of this paper is to reflect upon integrating into a CBA two important cost components: transaction costs and energy efficiency services—and how they interact. Even though this concept has not been carried out to the knowledge of the authors, we even go a step further to try to apply this idea. In so doing, we carried out a meta-analysis on relevant literature and existing data and interviewed a limited number of energy experts with comprehensive experience in carrying out energy services. Even though dat... [more]

Keywords: cryptanalysis, Energy Efficiency, information security, Internet of Things, lightweight routing, wireless sensor networks
The Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) has seen rapid growth in the development of real-time applications due to its ease of management and cost-effective attributes. However, the balance between optimization of network lifetime and load distribution between sensor nodes is a critical matter for the development of energy-efficient routing solutions. Recently, many solutions have been proposed for constraint-based networks using the cloud paradigm. However, they achieve network scalability with the additional cost of routing overheads and network latency. Moreover, the sensors’ data is transmitted towards application users over the uncertain medium, which leads to compromised data security and its integrity. Therefore, this work proposes a light-weight secure and energy-efficient fog-based routing (SEFR) protocol to minimize data latency and increase energy management. It exploits the Quality of Service (QoS) factors and facilitates time-sensitive applications with network edges. Moreover, t... [more]

Keywords: Design Builder, discomfort, Energy Efficiency, overheating, thermal comfort, weighted measure of discomfort
The heatwaves that have affected our civilization in recent years pose a serious threat to the environment as well as the proper functioning of our bodies. Schools are facilities with specific microclimatic requirements. Thermal conditions in educational buildings are decisive for the stimulation and efficiency of the learning process, as well as the interaction of students. Based on the measurements of thermal comfort carried out in the school building, with the energy standard of a passive building, it can be observed that in schools with very low energy consumption, the problem of interior overheating may occur in the summer months. In this paper, an attempt was made to search for alternative passive measures allowing for the required indoor microclimate conditions to be obtained. Such solutions are in line with the spirit of the European energy policy and sustainable development. A model of the school under study was created using the Design Builder simulation program. Subject: Environment
Keywords: agri-environmental indicators, comparative analysis, Energy Efficiency, green agriculture, green performance index, taxonomic methods, zero unitarization method
In this paper, the aggregate index of green performance of agriculture (Agri-Environmental Index (AEI)) was proposed and empirically verified. For this purpose, a taxonomic method was used, i.e., the linear ordering method, which allows for the construction of a synthetic metric for the assessment of performance. Based on 16 agri-environmental indicators from the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and Eurostat database, green performance indexes were constructed for 20 European countries. The constructed indexes are based on the multi-line impact of agriculture on the environment, with a particular focus on energy issues. During the analyses, answers to the following research questions were sought: Is the AEI an appropriate tool for evaluating the green performance of agriculture? What is the overall situation in this matter in EU countries? Which areas in terms of the impact of agriculture on the environment require remedial actions? The results of surveys sh... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: condensation, Energy Efficiency, hygrothermal modeling, hygrothermal properties, inter-laboratory testing, moisture transport, mold, water vapor resistivity
Hygrothermal assessment is essential to the production of healthy and energy efficient buildings. This has given rise to the demand for the development of a hygrothermal laboratory, as input data to hygrothermal modeling tools can only be sourced and validated through appropriate empirical measurements in a laboratory. These data are then used to quantify a building’s dynamic characteristic moisture transport vis-a-vis a much more comprehensive energy performance analysis through simulation. This paper discusses the methods used to establish Australia’s first hygrothermal laboratory for testing the water vapor resistivity properties of construction materials. The approach included establishing a climatically controlled hygrothermal test room with an automatic integrated system which controls heating, cooling, humidifying, and de-humidifying as required. The data acquisition for this hygrothermal test room operates with the installation of environmental sensors connected to specific and... [more]

Keywords: ball mills, DEM model, Energy Efficiency, internal dynamics, measurements, resonance oscillations
Tumbling mills have been widely implemented in many industrial sectors for the grinding of bulk materials. They have been used for decades in the production of fines and in the final stages of ore comminution, where optimal levels for the enrichment particles’ sizes are obtained. Even though these ubiquitous machines of relatively simple construction have been subjected to extensive studies, the industry still struggles with very low energy efficiency of the comminution process. Moreover, obtaining an optimal size for the grinding product particles is crucial for the effectiveness of the following processes and waste production reduction. New, innovative processing methods and machines are being developed to tackle the problem; however, tumbling mills are still most commonly used in all ranges of the industry. Since heavy equipment retrofitting is the most costly approach, process optimization with dedicated models and control systems is the most preferable solution for energy consumpt... [more]

Airtightness is a major issue in architectural design and it has a significant impact on the energy performance of buildings. Moreover, the energy behaviour of built heritage is due, to its singular characteristics, still a great unknown. The aim of this study is to establish a better knowledge of the airtightness of historical buildings, based on an in depth field study using blower-door tests. A set of 37 enclosures were analyzed inside eight buildings located in historical areas of a Spanish city with a significant built heritage. They were constructed between 1882 and 1919 and include diverse construction typologies applied for many building uses such as residential, cultural, educational, administrative and emblematic. The results indicate lower values compared to other previous airtightness studies of historical buildings. The average air change rate was found to be n50 = 9.03 h−1 and the airtightness of the enclosures presented a wide range of between 0.68 and 37.12 h−1. Three m... [more]

Keywords: electricity markets, Energy Efficiency, finite impulse response filters, forecasting, Kalman Filters, power generation planning, prediction, temperature
The motivation for this paper is the enhanced role of power generation prediction in power plants and power systems in the smart grid paradigm. The proposed approach addresses the impact of the ambient temperature on the performance of an open cycle gas turbine when using the Kalman Filter (KF) technique and the power-temperature (P-T) characteristic of the turbine. Several Kalman Filtering techniques are tested to obtain improved temperature forecasts, which are then used to obtain output power predictions. A typical P-T curve of an open-cycle gas turbine is used to demonstrate the applicability of the proposed method. Nonlinear and linear discrete process models are studied. Extended Kalman Filters are proposed for the nonlinear model. The Time Varying, Time Invariant, and Steady State Kalman Filters are used with the linearized model. Simulation results show that the power generation prediction obtained using the Extended Kalman Filter with the piecewise linear model yields improved... [more]

Energy recovery from a low temperature heat source using heat pump technology is becoming a popular application. The domestic hot water demand has the characteristic of being very irregular along the day, with periods in which the demand is very intensive and long periods in which it is quite small. In order to use heat pumps for this kind of applications efficiently, the proper sizing and design of the water storage tank is critical. In this work, the optimal sizing of the two possible tank alternatives, closed stratified tank and variable-water-volume tank, is presented, and their respective performance compared, for domestic hot water production based on low temperature energy recovery in two potential applications (grey water and ultra-low temperature district heating). The results show that the efficiency of these kind of systems is very high and that variable-water-volume tanks allow a better use of the energy source, with an 8% higher exergy efficiency and around 3% better seaso... Keywords: biogas production, conservation biomass, Energy Efficiency, GHG emissions, wetlands
We conducted the Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) of energy production from biogas for maize and three types of wetland biomass: reed Phragmites australis, sedges Carex elata, and Carex gracilis, and “grassy vegetation” of wet meadows (WM). Biogas energy produced from maize reached over 90 GJ ha−1, which was more than four times higher than that gained from wetland biomass. However, an estimation of energy efficiency (EE) calculated as a ratio of energy input to the energy produced in a biogas plant showed that the wet fermentation (WF) of maize was similar to the values obtained for dry fermentation (DF) of sedge biomass (~0.30 GJ GJ−1). The greenhouse gases (GHG) emissions released during preparation of the feedstock and operation of the biogas plant were 150 g CO2 eq. kWhel.−1 for DF of sedges and 262 g CO2 eq. kWhel.−1 for WF of Phragmites. Compared to the prevailing coal-based power generation in Central Europe, anaerobic digestion (AD) of wetland biomass could contribute to a reduction... [more]

The simulation results were performed by the advanced design system software using lumped equivalent circuit model. The power transfer efficiency was determined based on multiport scattering (S)-parameters numerical simulation results while the theoretical channel capacity was calculated based on Matlab software as a function of the coupling coefficient considering an additive white Gaussian noise. Furthermore, the magnetic field distribution was evaluated as function of the misalignment angle θ between the receiver and the three orthogonal transmitters coils.

Microwave heating has excellent potential for applications in wastewater treatment. This study proposes a highly efficient continuous liquid-phase microwave heating system to overcome the problems of low treatment capacity, low dynamic range of loads, and insufficient heating uniformity of the existing equipment. First, a quarter-wavelength impedance-matching layer improves heating efficiency, and the heating uniformity has been enhanced by horn antennas. Second, an experimental system is developed. The simulation and experimental results are consistent, with the microwave system achieving over 90% energy utilization for different thicknesses and concentrations of salt water. Finally, simulations are performed to analyze microwave efficiency and heating uniformity at different flow rates, salinities, dielectric properties, and sawtooth structures. The system can efficiently heat loads with a wide range of dielectric properties, including saline water. Generally, when the permittivity v... [more]

Keywords: baking, Energy Efficiency, food manufacturing, organic rankine cycle, vapour absorption cooling, waste heat recovery
The food manufacturing sector is one of the most dominant consumers of energy across the globe. Food processing methods such as drying, baking, frying, malting, roasting, etc. rely heavily on the heat released from burning fossil fuels, mainly natural gas or propane. Less than half of this heat contributes to the actual processing of the product and the remaining is released to the surroundings as waste heat, primarily through exhaust gases at 150 to 250 °C. Recovering this waste heat can deliver significant fuel, cost and CO2 savings. However, selecting an appropriate sink for this waste heat is challenging due to the relatively low source temperature. This study investigates a novel application of gas-to-air low temperature waste heat recovery technology for a confectionary manufacturing process, through a range of experiments. The recovered heat is used to preheat a baking oven’s combustion air at inlet before it enters the fuel-air mixture. The investigated technology is compared w... [more]
