Detection of Large Foreign Objects on Coal Mine Belt Conveyor Based on Improved
January 5, 2024 (v1)
Subject: Process Monitoring
Keywords: belt conveyor, deep separable convolution, large foreign object recognition, MSAM, YOLOv5
An algorithm based on the YOLOv5 model is proposed to address safety incidents such as tearing and blockage at transfer points on belt conveyors in coal mines caused by foreign objects mixed in with the coal flow. Given the tough underground conditions and images acquired with low quality, recursive filtering and MSRCR image enhancement algorithms were utilized to preprocess the dynamic images collected by underground monitoring devices, substantially enhancing image quality. The YOLOv5 model has been improved by introducing a multi-scale attention module (MSAM) during the channel map slicing, thereby increasing the model’s resistance to interference from redundant image features. Deep separable convolution was utilized in place of conventional convolution to detect, identify, and process large foreign objects on the belt conveyor as well as to increase detection speed. The MSAM-YOLOv5 model was trained before being installed on the NVIDIA Jetson Xavier NX platform and utilized to iden... [more]

New Technology and Method for Monitoring the Status of Power Systems to Improve Power Quality—A Case Study
January 5, 2024 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: data compression, Fourier transform, harmonics, monitoring, power quality, steady-state analysis, transient analysis, wavelet transforms (WTs)
The identification and analysis of harmonics, frequency, and transient events are essential today. It is necessary to have available data relating to harmonics, frequency, and transient events to understand power systems and their proper control and analysis. Power quality monitoring is the first step in identifying power quality disturbances and reducing them and, as a result, improving the performance of the power system. In this paper, while presenting different methods for measuring these quantities, we have made some corrections to them. These reforms have been obtained through the analysis of power network signals. Finally, we introduce a new monitoring system capable of measuring harmonics, frequency, and transient events in the network. In addition, these values are provided for online and offline calculations of harmonics, frequency, and transient events. In this paper, two new and practical methods of the “algebraic method” are used to calculate network harmonics and wavelet... [more]

Conversion of Materials and Energy in Anaerobic Digestion of Sewage Sludge with High-Pressure Homogenization Pretreatment
January 5, 2024 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: biogas production, CH4 yield, energy consumption, high-pressure homogenization, organic release, sludge anaerobic digestion
High pressure homogenization (HPH) pretreatment can improve sludge anaerobic digestion; however, the relationship among the material, energy conversion, and gas production efficiency was unclear under different operating conditions in sludge anaerobic digestion by HPH pretreatment. In this study, the performance of HPH pretreatment before sludge anaerobic digestion was investigated, and the relationship among the material, energy conversion, and gas production efficiency was explored. HPH pretreatment induced organic solubilization, and a maximum soluble chemical oxygen demand (SCOD)/total chemical oxygen demand (TCOD) of about 30% was achieved. Results showed that HPH pretreatment significantly improved the biogas production of sludge anaerobic digestion; the maximum increase in CH4 yield was 57%; and the anaerobic digestion period was shortened by about 10 days. The ratio of CH4 yield increment to volatile dissolved solids (VDS) increment was 0.21 mL/mg. The CH4 yield increment of 1... [more]

Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: binary systems, EOR, exothermic reaction, heavy oil, hydrodynamic modeling, reaction initiators, thermochemical flooding
Currently, most explored oil fields in Russia are at a late stage of development, and in order to maintain high levels of oil production, it is rational to put into operation fields with hard-to-recover reserves. For complicated oil fields, in particular fields with high-viscosity oil, the known traditional methods of development are ineffective. Therefore, the search for new technologies for the development and operation of such fields to significantly increase oil recovery and intensify production is of fundamental importance. One such method of heat treatment of the bottomhole formation zone is the use of heat and gas generating systems on site. In this work, new results were obtained on physical modeling of thermochemical reaction initiation with delayed-action catalyst (2,2-bis(hydroxymethyl)butanoic acid) filtration tests on composite core models of sandstone and carbonate with foam heat generation and initiating additives of binary type. Keywords: feature selection, integrated energy systems, load forecasting, support vector regression, variational mode decomposition
A method is proposed to address the challenging issue of load prediction in user-level integrated energy systems (IESs) using a composite VTDS model. Firstly, an IES multi-dimensional load time series is decomposed into multiple intrinsic mode functions (IMFs) using variational mode decomposition (VMD). Then, each IMF, along with other influential features, is subjected to data dimensionality reduction and clustering denoising using t-distributed stochastic neighbor embedding (t-SNE) and fast density-based spatial clustering of applications with noise (FDBSCAN) to perform major feature selection. Subsequently, the reduced and denoised data are reconstructed, and a time-aware long short-term memory (T-LSTM) artificial neural network is employed to fill in missing data by incorporating time interval information. Large Eddy Simulation of Cavitation Jets from an Organ-Pipe Nozzle: The Influence of Cavitation on the Vortex Coherent Structure
January 5, 2024 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: cavitation, divergence angle, dynamic mode decomposition, jet, Large Eddy Simulation
High-speed water jets are widely used in deep mining and the in-depth study of jet characteristics helps to improve drilling efficiency. Three-dimensional Large Eddy Simulation is used to simulate turbulent flows generated by an organ-pipe nozzle. The simulation is validated with existing experimental data and is focused on the evolution and interaction of cavitation bubbles and vortices. Dynamic mode decomposition is performed to extract structural information about the different motion modes and their stability. Results show that the dominant fluid frequency is positively correlated with inlet pressure while unrelated to the divergence angle. Meanwhile, jets’ oscillation is amplified by a large divergence angle, which facilitates the occurrence of cavitation. Results about the flow field outside of an organ-pipe nozzle advance the understanding of the basic mechanism of cavitation jets.

Throttling Loss Energy-Regeneration System Based on Pressure Difference Pump Control for Electric Forklifts
January 5, 2024 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: electric forklift, electric motor, energy regeneration, pump/motor, throttling loss, variable pressure control
At present, the hydraulic systems of electric forklifts and traditional internal combustion forklifts are mostly valve-controlled speed-regulation systems, which have large throttling losses and potential energy waste. To further improve the energy-saving ability of electric forklifts, the forklift’s common working conditions are analyzed in this paper. A throttling loss energy-regeneration system based on pressure difference pump control is designed, and the system’s working principle is described. Aiming to deal with the problem that the pump−valve compound speed regulation with constant pressure difference could not realize high controllability and energy saving at the same time, a control strategy for variable pressure difference pump−valve compound speed regulation based on pressure balance control is proposed. The handle signal is positively related to the target speed of the oil cylinder. In the low-speed stage, the closed-loop control of the actual output torque of the motor/ge... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: coagulation, synthetic coating, Water, zinc oxide
Increased usage of nano-zinc oxide (nZnO) in different commercial fields has raised serious concerns regarding their discharge into the water streams containing natural and synthetic coating agents. Moreover, utilization of ground and surface water for drinking purposes is a common approach in many countries. Therefore, the removal of nZnO particles from water is essential to minimize the risk to the environment. The present research investigated the removal of nZnO from complex water matrices by conventional coagulation-flocculation-sedimentation (C/F/S) process using polyaluminum chloride (PACl) as coagulants. The result showed that removal of uncoated nZnO through sedimentation was efficient in waters containing divalent cations in the absence of dissolved organic matter (DOM). For the water containing higher salt concentration, PACl coagulant showed better removal performance with increasing coagulant dosage; however, synthetic organic coating agent and DOM significantly decreased... Keywords: empirical models, Extra Trees, KNN, LightGBM, Machine Learning, overpressure, pore pressure prediction, Random Forest, well logs
In recent years, there has been significant research and practical application of machine learning methods for predicting reservoir pore pressure. However, these studies frequently concentrate solely on reservoir blocks exhibiting normal-pressure conditions. Currently, there exists a scarcity of research addressing the prediction of pore pressure within reservoir blocks characterized by abnormally high pressures. In light of this, the present paper introduces a machine learning-based approach to predict pore pressure within reservoir blocks exhibiting abnormally high pressures. The methodology is demonstrated using the X block as a case study. Initially, the combination of the density−sonic velocity crossplot and the Bowers method is favored for elucidating the overpressure-to-compact mechanism within the X block. The elevated pressure within the lower reservoir is primarily attributed to the pressure generated during hydrocarbon formation. The Bowers method has been chosen to forecast... [more]

Experimental Investigation of the Relationship of Failure Mode and Energy Dissipation in Grouted Rockbolt Systems under Pullout Load
November 30, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: energy dissipation, failure mode, grouted rockbolt systems, load transfer, pullout load
In underground engineering, the deformation of surrounding rock caused by “three heights and one disturbance” leads to the failure of grouted rockbolt systems, which causes huge economic losses to the mining industry. The research shows that the failure process of grouted rockbolt systems is the result of energy accumulation and release, but the relationship between failure mode and energy dissipation is rarely studied. Based on this, the load transfer behavior, energy dissipation, failure mode and failure mechanism of the grouted rockbolt systems are investigated from the perspective of energy in this study using the indoor pullout test. Test results show that the load decreases rapidly, and the absorbed energy decreases due to the whole-body splitting crack. The absorbed energy of the specimen in the splitting crack mode is lower than that in the pullout failure mode. When the pullout load reaches its peak, the pullout load of the specimen with split failure mode decreases sharply. M... [more]

Assessment of Triglyceride Droplet Crystallization Using Mixtures of β-Lactoglobulin and Phospholipids as Emulsifiers
November 30, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: dispersion, droplet crystallization, O/W emulsion, phospholipids, triglyceride, β-lactoglobulin
Many applications in the life science and food industries require (semi-)crystalline oil-in-water (O/W) dispersions. Unfortunately, high supercooling and, thus, low temperatures are often needed to induce the crystallization of droplets. As low molecular weight emulsifiers (LMWEs) are able to act as nucleation templates, they might help to decrease the required level of supercooling. Furthermore, proteins and LMWEs are frequently co-formulated to improve the colloidal stability of emulsions and dispersions. Hence, choosing a suitable protein and LMWE mixture would allow for achieving specific product properties for controlling the solid fat content (SFC) and take advantage of the stabilization mechanisms of both emulsifiers. Therefore, this study focuses on the impact of the co-existence of β-lactoglobulin (β-lg) and phospholipids (PLs) LMWEs on the SFC of triglyceride (TAG) droplets at isothermal conditions using a thermo-optical method. When β-lg alone was used as an emulsifier, a ma... [more]

Weakly cemented soft rock mines in the Ordos Basin are susceptible to mining disasters, including roof collapse and substantial deformation of surrounding rocks, during coal mining operations. Researching the damage characteristics of structures composed of low-strength “soft rock−coal” combinations is crucial for effectively preventing and controlling disasters in deep soft rock mining. To investigate the fractal damage characteristics of soft rock−coal combinations with different height ratios, uniaxial compression tests were conducted on specimens containing soft rock percentages of 20%, 40%, 50%, 60%, and 80%. The results show that the uniaxial compressive strength and modulus of elasticity of the soft rock−coal combinations increased with increasing proportions of soft rock. Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: adaptive cycle engine, engine performance simulation, integrated model, multi-fidelity simulation model, tip clearance
The low-fidelity simulation method cannot meet the requirements for predicting the performance of an adaptive cycle engine (ACE), especially when considering tip clearance variations in the compression and expansion systems. The tip clearances of the components of an ACE, such as the adaptive fan and turbine, vary drastically under different operating conditions. Though the tip clearance significantly impacts the engine’s performance, including its thrust and fuel consumption, variations in tip clearance are not considered in traditional ACE simulation models. This paper developed a new integrated model for predicting ACE performance, including multi-fidelity simulation models of the components and a newly developed, simplified model for predicting tip clearance. Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: buoyancy, dispersion, indoor, respiratory droplet, Simulation
The understanding of the impact of buoyancy-driven flow on the migration of respiratory droplets remains limited. To investigate this phenomenon, the Lagrangian−Eulerian approach (k-ε turbulent model and discrete phase model) was employed to analyze the interaction between buoyancy-driven flow and coughing activity. The simulation approach was validated by simulating a jet problem in water. Although this problem describes the jet penetration in water, the governing equations for this problem are the same as those for coughing activity in the air. The results demonstrated that an umbrella-shaped airflow was generated above a person and a temperature stratification existed in the room. The buoyancy-driven flow significantly altered the dispersion pattern of the droplets. Notably, for large droplets with an initial diameter of 100 μm, the flow in the boundary layer led to an increased deposition time by about five times. The effective and reliable performance of any pump can be significantly impacted by the piping system design. One of the essential points is the pump suction pipe. Poor design and dimension of the suction piping can lead to cavitation in the pump which affects its head and efficiency. The primary objective is to reduce the hydraulic losses of the suction piping in order to maintain a Net Positive Suction Head required by the pump. Suction piping is recommended to be short and straight, and branch connections, valves and elbows should be avoided, which is not always possible. In addition, cavitation can occur in the actual hydraulic elements installed on the pump suction. This work is focused on the investigation of cavitating hydraulic element in the suction pipe on the pump performance.
