April 11, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: evaluation, heat source, mass and heat transfer coefficients, ultrasound
A new optimization method for the assessment of the coefficients existing in a model of drying kinetics is developed and presented in this article. This method consists of matching the drying kinetics resulting from the mathematical model with the drying kinetics resulting from the experiments. Both the heat and mass transfer coefficients, the critical relative humidity, and the additional ultrasound energy (heat) source are included in the optimization procedure. The Adams−Bashforth multistep method of solving nonlinear ordinary differential equations is used. The inverse problem of model parameter estimation is solved by the Rosenbrock optimization method. The methodology is illustrated by the example of the ultrasound-assisted convective drying of apple and carrot. A high level of agreement between the results obtained experimentally and numerically was found. The obtained results confirmed the great influence of ultrasound on the drying kinetics. It was found that ultrasound applic... [more]

This paper presents a comprehensive study of the technical and economic benefits that a typical residential prosumer may experience when investing in a solar photovoltaic (PV) system with a battery energy storage system (BESS). To this end, a home energy management system has been designed to simulate the prosumer’s daily operation, considering a novel method for calculating battery degradation while minimizing its operating costs. In order to contribute to the regulatory review process of the distributed generation underway in Brazil, a set of PV+BESS configurations has been assessed under the current and future regulatory scenarios proposed for discussion by the Brazilian regulatory agency. Although the results demonstrate that the prosumer’s self-consumption rate may increase up to 14% with the BESS coupling in the PV system, the investment proved to be economically unattractive in the current regulatory scenario and practically unfeasible in any of the proposed future scenarios. Subject: Optimization
Keywords: Aliakmon River, genetic algorithms, Greece, hydro energy, multi-reservoir systems, Optimization
In this work we study long-term maximization of hydroelectric energy generation from complex multi-purpose reservoir systems, using the reservoir system of the Aliakmon River, Greece, as an application example. This system serves various purposes, like urban water supply, irrigation, hydroelectric energy production, cooling thermoelectric power plants and flood control, while preserving environmental flow. The system operator uses institutional rules for the annual scheduling of the outflows of the 2 largest reservoirs (Ilarion and Polyfyto) for additional safety and smooth distribution of energy production through the year. In this work, we focus on maximization of energy production. We have considered three different hydrological scenarios (dry, average and wet), both for the current and for anticipated future water demand. The multi-reservoir system’s operation was simulated and then optimized using a rather simple form of genetic algorithms, in order to maximize hydro energy produc... [more]

The increasing deployment of wind power is reducing inertia in power systems. High-voltage direct current (HVDC) technology can help to improve the stability of AC areas in which a frequency response is required. Moreover, multi-terminal DC (MTDC) networks can be optimized to distribute active power to several AC areas by droop control setting schemes that adjust converter control parameters. To this end, in this paper, particle swarm optimization (PSO) is used to improve the primary frequency response in AC areas considering several grid limitations and constraints. The frequency control uses an optimization process that minimizes the frequency nadir and the settling time in the primary frequency response. Secondly, another layer is proposed for the redistribution of active power among several AC areas, if required, without reserving wind power capacity. This method takes advantage of the MTDC topology and considers the grid code limitations at the same time. Two scenarios are defined... [more]

Keywords: first fit and best fit, matrix real coded genetic algorithm (MRCGA), miniload automated storage and retrieval system (AS/RSs), multiple-rack strategies, probability occurrence of item sizes
This paper aimed to introduce multiple-rack strategies in miniload automated storage and retrieval systems (AS/RSs), which included first fit (FF) and best fit (BF) assignment methods based on a matrix real-coded genetic algorithm (MRCGA) in the storage and retrieval process. We validated the probability occurrence of item sizes as a contributory factor in multiple-rack strategies, and compared their capacities, utilization of units and space by equal probabilities or the 80/20 law. According to the analytical methods, BF showed a reduction of more than 11.2% than FF on travel distance, and Type B-FF, Type B-BF and Type C-BF were better able to meet high-density requirements. These strategies provide diversified storage and retrieval solutions for the manufacturing and express delivery industry.

Subject: Optimization
Keywords: complementation, integrated optimization, NLP model, refinery, SPC
Synthetic plant of chemicals (SPC) consumes large amounts of hydrogen and carbon-oxides while refineries require high-purity hydrogen. Coal gasification (CG) and steam methane reforming (SMR) are common industrial hydrogen production technologies. Their gas products are essentially a mixture of H2, CO, and CO2. Therefore, such gas products can provide both syngas for SPC and concentrated hydrogen for refinery through appropriate allocation. Based on the composition complementation of gas products from CG and SMR for their efficient utilization, this paper proposed an integration methodology for refinery and SPC coupling networks to conserve both fossil fuel resources and carbon emissions. A superstructure is established as a problem illustration and a nonlinear programming model (NLP) is formulated as a mathematical solution. A case study is performed, and the results show that the coupling network integration can save 19.1% and 20.2% of coal and natural gas consumption, as well as cor... [more]

Solar energy is the most available renewable resource and has great potential for various applications. Solar heat pumps are limited when operating alone due to weather and the unstable and intermittent nature of solar energy. The idea of combining a solar collector with an air-source heat pump (ASHP) is proposed to solve the problems. Taking solar energy and air energy as the heat source of the system can improve the heat collection efficiency and heating performance coefficient of the dual-supply heating system in realizing the efficient and stable operation of the whole unit. This study investigated the application of a solar−air-source heat pump (S/AS-HP) dual-supply heating system for a residential building in Lhasa and compared the winter work performance and economic benefits of three different heating forms: solar−air-source heat pump, air-source heat pump, and solar−electric auxiliary heating systems. The new paradigm of nature-inspired cybersecurity can establish a robust defense by utilizing well-established nature-inspired computing algorithms to analyze networks and act quickly. The existing research focuses primarily on the efficient selection of features for quick and optimized detection rates using firefly and other nature-inspired optimization techniques. However, selecting the most appropriate features may be specific to the network, and a different set of features may work better than the selected one. Therefore, there is a need for a generalized pre-processing step based on the standard network monitoring parameters for the early detection of suspicious nodes before applying feature-based or any other type of monitoring. This paper proposes a modified version of the firefly optimization algorithm to effectively monitor the network by introducing a novel health function for the early detection of suspicious nodes. Subject: Optimization
Keywords: bottomhole stress field, deep-well drilling, finite element analysis, rock breakage mechanism, thermal-hydro-mechanical coupling
Drilling is a key step in the exploitation of deep oil and gas resources. In order to clarify the stress state of the rocks and the mechanism of rock breakage in deep-well drilling, a thermal-hydro-mechanical coupling model for deep-well drilling was established, and the effects of drilling on the temperature, pressure, and stress in the formation were studied. Furthermore, the effects of the formation parameters and wellbore parameters on the bottomhole stress were analyzed. The results revealed that after the formation was drilled, the temperatures in different horizontal in situ stress directions were not significantly different, but the difference in the pore pressure between the maximum and minimum horizontal stress directions was large. The average effective stress at the bottom of the hole was the smallest, and in some areas, it was tensile stress. For deep-well drilling, as the formation pressure increased, the in situ stress increased, and the permeability decreased, leading t... [more]

This paper proposes a methodology based on a genetic algorithms (GA) to calibrate the parameters of a chlorine decay model in a water distribution system (WDS). The proposed methodology first contemplates that a GA is implemented using historical measurements of chlorine concentration at some sensed nodes to calibrate the unknown values corresponding to both the bulk and wall reaction coefficients. Once both parameters are estimated, the optimal-fit chlorine decay model is used to predict the decay of chlorine concentration in the water at each node for any concentration input at the pumping station. Then, a second GA-based algorithm is implemented to obtain the minimal chlorine concentration needed at the input to ensure that every node in the system meets the official normativity requirements for free chlorine in a WDS. The proposed methodology performed satisfactorily for a WDS simulated in EPANET with a GA implemented in MATLAB, both for the estimation of the reaction coefficients... [more]

Conventional stirred-tank bioreactor (STR) designs are optimised for cultures of bacteria but not fungal cultures; therefore, a new Air-L-Shaped Bioreactor (ALSB) was fabricated. The ALSB was designed to eliminate the wall growth and clumping of fungal mycelium in STRs. Ganoderma lucidum was used as a fungal model and its biomass and exopolysaccharide (EPS) production were maximised by optimising the agitation rate, glucose concentration, initial pH, and aeration via response surface methodology (RSM). The ALSB system generated 7.8 g/L of biomass (biomass optimised conditions: 110 rpm, 24 g/L glucose, pH 5.6, and 3 v/v of aeration) and 4.4 g/L of EPS (EPS optimised conditions: 90 rpm, 30 g/L glucose, pH 4, and 2.5 v/v of aeration). In combination, for both optimised conditions, biomass (7.9 g/L) and EPS (4.6 g/L) were produced at 110 rpm, 30 g/L glucose, pH 4, and 3 v/v of aeration with minimal wall growth. Subject: Optimization
Keywords: automatic driving, cost minimization, forward–backward heuristics, greedy algorithm
Truck platooning has recently become an essential issue in automatic driving. Though truck platooning can increase safety and reduce fuel consumption and carbon emissions, the practical vehicle routing problem involved in truck platooning has not been sufficiently addressed. Therefore, we design a mixed-integer linear programming model for the routing problem in truck platooning considering the deadline of vehicles, continuous-time units, different fuel reduction rates, traffic congestion avoidance, and heterogeneous vehicles. In addition, a forward−backward heuristic called the “greedy heuristic” is presented for reasonable computation time. To validate the model’s performance, several parameters, such as the percentage of fuel reduction, percentage of detour vehicles, and percentage of platooned links (road segments), are considered. Additionally, various cases are considered with varying fuel reduction rates, traffic flow rates, and time windows.

In the recent climate change regime, industrial demand for renewable materials to replace petroleum-derived polymers continues to rise. Of particular interest is polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) as a substitute for polypropylene. Accumulating evidence indicates that PHB is highly produced as a carbon storage material in various microorganisms. The effects of growth conditions on PHB production have been widely studied in chemolithotrophs, particularly in Rhodobacter. However, the results on PHB production in Rhodobacter have been somewhat inconsistent due to different strains and experimental conditions, and it is currently unclear how diverse environmental factors are linked with PHB production. Here, we report optimized growth conditions for PHB production and show that the growth conditions are closely related to reactive oxygen species (ROS) regulation. PHB accumulates in cells up to approximately 50% at the highest level under dark-aerobic conditions as opposed to light aerobic/anaerobic... [more]

Keywords: Capacitor Banks Placement, Exhaustive Search, Flower Pollination Algorithm, hybrid algorithm
Reactive power compensation with Capacitor Banks (CBs) is one of the most successful approaches used in distribution systems, mainly due to their versatility, long-term acceptance in the power industry, and reduced costs. Most allocation methods, however, lack specific strategies to handle the limited discrete nature of CBs sizes seeking to improve the overall optimization and computational performance. We present an algorithm for the Optimal Placement of Capacitor Banks (OPCB) in distribution systems by means of a hybrid Flower Pollination Algorithm (FPA)−Exhaustive Search (ES) approach. The pollination process itself determines the sets of buses for placement, while CBs sizes and the final fitness values of each pollen are selected after a full-search is conducted in the sizing space. As the sizing phase works on the limited search space of predetermined discrete bank values, the computational effort to find the optimum CB capacity is greatly reduced. Tests were performed on distribu... [more]

Keywords: cost optimization, septage treatment, vertical flow constructed wetland, wastewater treatment
Analysis of the current knowledge has revealed the lack of a method for increasing the cost-effectiveness of wastewater and septage treatment in plants overloaded by contamination. This was the premise for undertaking research on the process of septage pre-treatment in a subsurface vertical flow constructed wetland (SS-VF) prior to its input into the biological section of a municipal treatment plant. In previous research the authors have indicated that this allows for a significant reduction in the value of pollution indicators. The objective of this paper is to assess the cost-effectiveness of this process by means of an optimization model. The decision variable was the coefficient of septage stream distribution into the quantity directed to the SS-VF bed in relation to its total quantity. The optimization criterion was the minimization of the expected annual cost of wastewater and septage treatment. Verification of the model has shown that it is reasonable to subject all septage to t... [more]

Integration of modeling and optimization of a thermal management system simultaneously depends on heat transfer performance of the components and the topological characteristics of the system. This paper introduces a heat current method to construct the overall heat current layout of a typical double-loop thermal management system. We deduce the system heat transfer matrix as the whole system constraint based on the overall heat current layout. Moreover, we consider the influences of structural and operational parameters on the thermal hydraulic performances of each heat exchanger by combining the empirical correlations of the heat transfer and pressure drop. Finally, the minimum pressure drop is obtained by solving these optimal governing equations derived by the Lagrange multiplier method considering the physical constraints and operational conditions. The optimization results show that the minimum pressure drop reduces about 8.1% with the optimal allocation of mass flow rates of eac... [more]
