February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: Energy Storage, geothermal heating system, levelized cost of heat, operation strategy, Optimization, time-of-use electricity prices
Geothermal heating is considered to be one of the low-carbon-energy technologies for building heating. Aiming at the problem that the operating cost and investment cost of geothermal heating systems are still high, the conventional geothermal heating system coupled with energy storage for office building heating is studied in this paper. Four operational strategy models of the coupled system are established based on time-of-use electricity prices. A genetic algorithm is used to find the optimal value of each decision variable using minimization of levelized cost of heat (LCOH) as the objective function. The influences of electricity and equipment prices on the optimal values of the decision variables are discussed. Four operation strategies are investigated. If only operating cost is considered in the optimization, comparison shows that the best operation strategy is the one giving high priority to use the energy storage tank for heating during the peak electricity period. However, if... [more]

Subject: Optimization
Keywords: biohythane, cheese whey, mesophilic–thermophilic mode, Optimization, response surface methodology, two-stage anaerobic digestion
Spatial separation into acidogenic and methanogenic stages is considered a viable option to ensure process stability, energy efficiency and the better control of key anaerobic digestion (AD) parameters. The elucidation of the optimal modes of two-stage AD for the maximization of the recovery of biofuels (H2 and CH4) is still an urgent task, the main optimization criteria being the highest energy yield (EY) and energy production rate (EPR). In this work, a response surface methodology was used for an optimization of energy production from the two-stage mesophilic−thermophilic AD of cheese whey (CW). Three dilution rates of CW, providing values of 10.9, 14.53 and 21.8 g for the chemical oxygen demand (COD)/L in the influent and three hydraulic retention times (HRTs) (1, 2 and 3 days) in methanogenic biofilters at a constant HRT in an acidogenic biofilter of 0.42 days, were tested to optimize the EY and EPR. Analysis and Optimization of a Novel Flux Reversal Machine with Auxiliary Teeth
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: auxiliary teeth, flux leakage, flux reversal, Genetic Algorithm
As a typical representative of the stator permanent magnet (PM) machines, the flux reversal machines (FRMs) have a simple structure, high availability of PMs, and high efficiency, making them suitable for direct drive applications. However, the PMs of the FRMs are mounted on the surface of the stator tooth, and its equivalent length of air gap is relatively large, which limits the torque increase. To improve the torque density, a novel FRM with auxiliary teeth is proposed in this paper. Half of the stator teeth are replaced by auxiliary teeth without PMs to reduce magnetic flux leakage, the number of PMs on each stator tooth is also changed. To improve the torque, the genetic algorithm is used to optimize the key design parameters to determine the optimal parameters of the machine. Finally, a finite element model is established to verify the analysis results. Compared with the conventional FRM, the torque of the proposed FRM is increased by 25.1%, the torque ripple is reduced by 24.1%,... [more]

February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: energy optimization, MAC, review and data communication, routing, wireless sensor network
Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are considerably used for various environmental sensing applications. The architecture and internal specifications of WSNs have been chosen based on the requirements of particular applications. On this basis, WSNs consist of resource (energy and memory)-limited wireless sensor nodes. WSNs initiate data communication from source to destination via physical layer management principles, channel slot scheduling principles (time division multiple access), wireless medium access control (WMAC) protocols, wireless routing protocols and application protocols. In this environment, the development of WMAC principles, routing protocols and channel allotment schemes play crucial roles in network communication phases. Consequently, these layering functions consume more energy at each sensor node, which leads to minimal network lifetime. Even though the channel management schemes, medium control protocols and routing protocols are functionally suitable, the excessive... [more]

Improved Moth Flame Optimization Approach for Parameter Estimation of Induction Motor
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: experimental validations, induction motors, moth flame optimization, parameters extraction
The effective deployment of electrical energy has received attention because of its environmental implications. On the other hand, induction motors are the primary equipment used in many industries. Industrial facilities demand the maximum percentage of energy. This energy demand is determined by the operating circumstances imposed by the internal characteristics of the induction motor. Because internal parameters of an induction motor are not immediately measurable, they must be obtained through an identification process. This paper proposed an improved version of moth flame optimization (IMFO) for the efficient parameter estimation of induction motors. A steady-state equivalent circuit of the induction motor is employed for the simulation. The proposed technique handles the parameter estimation problem better than moth flame optimization (MFO), particle swarm optimization (PSO), the flower pollination algorithm (FPA), the tunicate swarm algorithm (TSA), and the sine cosine algorithm... February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: flow energy consumption, fluid-solid interaction, heat transfer, micro-channel heat sink, topology optimization
To investigate the effect of the target weight coefficient on the structure design of the micro-channel heat sink, an innovative method for the topology optimization design of micro-channel structures with different bifurcation angles is adopted. In this study, the improved interpolation function, density filtering, and hyperbolic tangent projection methods are adopted to obtain a clear topological structure of the micro-channel heat sink. The heat transfer of the micro-channel heat sink under different bifurcation angles is compared. At the same time, the influence of the two different objective functions, heat transfer, and flow energy consumption, is analyzed in the topology optimization of micro-channel heat sinks. The results show that when the bifurcation angle is 135°, both the heat transfer and the average outlet temperature of the micro-channel heat sink obtain the maximum value, and the heat transfer effect is the best. Underwater Wireless Charging System of Unmanned Surface Vehicles with High Power, Large Misalignment Tolerance and Light Weight: Analysis, Design and Optimization
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: coils, inductive power transmission, lightweight design, magnetic coupler, misalignment, underwater vehicle, wireless power transmission
Wireless charging systems (WCSs) are considered very appropriate to recharge underwater surface vehicles (USVs) due to their safe, flexible, and cost-effective characteristics. The small depth of immersion of USVs allows a WCS operated at an mm-level distance using a dock. Resultant tight coupling between the transmitter and receiver is conducive to high power, yet faces a challenge to alleviating misalignment sensitivity. In addition, considering USVs’ endurance, the weight of a WCS should be strictly limited. In this paper, a 6.0 kW underwater WCS is analyzed, designed, and optimized, which achieves a good balance of power capacity, misalignment tolerance, and onboard weight. A multi-receiving-coil structure is employed, which is crucial to large misalignment tolerance. On this basis, two types of coils adapting the hull shape of USV, viz., curved and quasi-curved coils, are devised and compared in case the hydrodynamic performance of USV is degraded. February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: computational complexity, contiguity constraints, energy system optimization, spatial aggregation, technological aggregation, time series clustering
Energy system models that consider variable renewable energy sources (VRESs) are computationally complex. The greater spatial scope and level of detail entailed in the models exacerbates complexity. As a complexity-reduction approach, this paper considers the simultaneous spatial and technological aggregation of energy system models. To that end, a novel two-step aggregation scheme is introduced. First, model regions are spatially aggregated to obtain a reduced region set. The aggregation is based on model parameters such as VRES time series, capacities, etc. In addition, spatial contiguity of regions is considered. Next, technological aggregation is performed on each VRES, in each region, based on their time series. The aggregations’ impact on accuracy and complexity of a cost-optimal, European energy system model is analyzed. The model is aggregated to obtain different combinations of numbers of regions and VRES types. Results are benchmarked against an initial resolution of 96 regio... [more]

A Heuristic Approach to Optimal Crowbar Setting and Low Voltage Ride through of a Doubly Fed Induction Generator
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: Algorithms, crowbar, doubly fed induction generator, linear quadratic regulator, optimization methods
In this paper, a heuristic approach to doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) protection and low voltage ride through (LVRT) is carried out. DFIG-based wind systems are rapidly penetrating the power generation section. Despite their advantages, their direct coupling grid makes them highly sensitive to symmetrical faults. This paper provides a method to determine the optimal crowbar resistance value, to ensure a strong trade-off between the rotor current and DC voltage transients. Further, since the crowbar method requires disconnection from the grid, the linear quadratic regulator (LQR) is applied to the system. This is to ensure fault ride through compliance with recent grid code requirements. The well-known PSO, as well as the recently developed African vultures optimization algorithm (AVOA), was applied to the problem.
