April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: actuator, artificial muscle, carbon dioxide free, CNT, dielectric elastomer, generation, high efficiency, high power, large deformation, rare earths free
Power generation using dielectric elastomer (DE) artificial muscle is attracting attention because of its light weight, low cost, and high-efficiency. Since this method is a system that produces electricity without emitting carbon dioxide nor using rare earths, it would contribute to the goal of environmental sustainability. In this paper, the background of DEs, the associated high efficiency wave energy generation (WEG) systems that we developed using DEs, as well as the latest development of its material are summarized. By covering both the challenges and achievements, this paper discusses the opportunities to build the foundation of an energy recycling society through the usage of these WEGs. To make these possibilities commercially successful, the advantages of DEs need to be integrated with traditional technologies. To achieve this, the method of using DEs alone and a system used in combination with an oscillating water column were also considered. Finally, the current status and... [more]
Analysis of Driving Dynamics Considering Driving Resistances in On-Road Driving
Jingeun Song, Junepyo Cha
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: driving dynamics, driving resistance, on-road driving test, relative positive acceleration, vehicle speed per positive acceleration
Internal combustion engine emissions are a serious worldwide problem. To combat this, emission regulations have become stricter with the goal of reducing the proportion of transportation emissions in global air pollution. In addition, the European Commission passed the real driving emissions−light-duty vehicles (RDE-LDV) regulation that evaluates vehicle emissions by driving on real roads. The RDE test is significantly dependent on driving conditions such as traffic or drivers. Thus, the RDE regulation has the means to evaluate driving dynamics such as the vehicle speed per acceleration (v·apos) and the relative positive acceleration (RPA) to determine whether the driving during these tests is normal or abnormal. However, this is not an appropriate way to assess the driving dynamics because the v⋅apos and the RPA do not represent engine load, which is directly related to exhaust emissions. Therefore, in the present study, new driving dynamic variables are proposed. These variables use... [more]

April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Altman model, CHAID, Classification Trees, CRT algorithm, decision making, indicators, k-Nearest Neighbors method, manufacturing companies, renewable energy sources
In the interests of the environment, many countries set limits on the use of non-renewable energy sources and promote renewable energy sources through policy and legislation. Consequently, the demand for components for renewable energy systems exhibits an upward trend. For this reason, managers, investors, and banks are interested in knowing whether investing in a business associated with the semiconductor and related device manufacturing sector, especially the photovoltaic (PV) systems manufacturers, is worthy of a penny. Using a sample for the period of 2015−2018, we apply a new approach to panel data, extending existing research using Classification Trees with the k-Nearest Neighbor and Altman model. Our aim is to analyze the financial conditions of enterprises to identify key indicators that distinguish companies producing PV system components (labeled “green, G”) from companies that do not manufacture PV components (“red, R”). Our results show that green companies can be distingui... [more]

Keywords: CHP, design, economic analysis, gas turbines, heat recovery, ORC, part-load, supercritical CO2
Gas turbine power plants are widely employed with constrained efficiency in the industrial field, where they often work under variable load conditions caused by variations in demand, leading to fluctuating exhaust gas temperatures. Suitable energy harvesting solutions can be identified in bottoming cycles, such as the conventional Organic Rankine Cycles (ORC) or the innovative supercritical CO2 (s-CO2) systems. This paper presents a detailed comparison of the potential of ORC and s-CO2 as bottomers of industrial gas turbines in a Combined Heat and Power (CHP) configuration. Different gas turbine models, covering the typical industrial size range, are taken into account and both full- and part-load operations are considered. Performance, component dimensions, and operating costs are investigated, considering ORC and s-CO2 systems specifics in line with the current state-of-the-art products, experience, and technological limits. Results of the study show that the s-CO2 could be more appr... [more]

Keywords: bulk density, coke making, coke quality, CRI, CSR, hard coking coal, semi-soft coal, stamp charging, structure
Coke is an integral component of the blast furnace charge; therefore, it plays an important role in the integrated steelmaking process. Achieving the required coke quality parameters by producers requires the use of a high proportion of the highest quality coking coals (hard coking coals) in the coking blends, which significantly increases the unit production costs. Approximately 75% of these costs are constituted by the cost of the coal blend’s preparation. There is a deficit in the best quality coking coals on the world market and their supply are characterized by large fluctuations in quality parameters. Therefore, from the point of view of the economics of coke production, it is advantageous to produce high-quality coke from a coke blend with the highest possible content of cheaper coals. The paper presents the results of the influence of coal charge bulk density and semi-soft coking coal content in the coking blend on the textural and structural parameters of coke, which determine... An Explicit Fourth-Order Compact Numerical Scheme for Heat Transfer of Boundary Layer Flow
Yasir Nawaz, Muhammad Shoaib Arif, Wasfi Shatanawi, Amna Nazeer
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: compact explicit scheme, flow over the plate, mixed convection, nonlinear PDEs, thermal radiation
The main contribution of this article is to propose a compact explicit scheme for solving time-dependent partial differential equations (PDEs). The proposed explicit scheme has an advantage over the corresponding implicit compact scheme to find solutions of nonlinear and linear convection−diffusion type equations because the implicit existing compact scheme fails to obtain the solution. In addition, the present scheme provides fourth-order accuracy in space and second-order accuracy in time, and is constructed on three grid points and three time levels. It is a compact multistep scheme and conditionally stable, while the existing multistep scheme developed on three time levels is unconditionally unstable for parabolic and considered a type of equations. The mathematical model of the heat transfer in a mixed convective radiative fluid flow over a flat plate is also given. The convergence conditions of dimensionless forms of these equations are given, and also the proposed scheme solves... [more]

April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: battery energy storage system, demand response, integrated community energy system, smart grid, smart island energy system
Implementation of alternative energy supply solutions requires the broad involvement of local communities. Hence, smart energy solutions are primarily investigated on a local scale, resulting in integrated community energy systems (ICESs). Within this framework, the distributed generation can be optimally utilised, matching it with the local load via storage and demand response techniques. In this study, the boat demand flexibility in the Ballen marina on Samsø—a medium-sized Danish island—is analysed for improving the local grid operation. For this purpose, suitable electricity tariffs for the marina and sailors are developed based on the conducted demand analysis. The optimal scheduling of boats and battery energy storage system (BESS) is proposed, utilising mixed-integer linear programming. The marina’s grid-flexible operation is studied for three representative weeks—peak tourist season, late summer, and late autumn period—with the combinations of high/low load and photovoltaic (PV... Keywords: non-hybrid configuration, residential, small-scale turbines, techno-financial evaluation, wind energy
This study provides a techno-financial evaluation of two sites in Malaysia: Kudat, located on the coast of the northernmost part of Sabah, the state of East Malaysia with promising wind potential, and Putrajaya in the Klang Valley region with moderate wind potential at high elevations similar to the dominant cities in Malaysia. Three small-scale wind turbines were evaluated, taking into account a nominal electrical power generation below 100 kW. The research is focused on 220 residential households. The software used to perform the evaluation was Hybrid Optimization of Multiple Energy Resources (HOMER). The research novelty is the examination of the non-hybrid small-scale turbines at high elevations for regions with low wind speed, such as Malaysia. Regardless of the wind farms’ financial profit, this study used the net present cost (NPC) analysis in all cases. This research demonstrates the feasibility of small-scale wind turbines mounted at high elevations for generating sufficient e... [more]

April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: descending modal transition (DMT), detonation wave tracking, rotating detonation rocket engine (RDRE), wave interaction, Wolanski wave stability criterion
Rotating detonation rocket engines (RDREs) exhibit various unsteady phenomena, including modal transitions, that significantly affect their operation, performance and stability. The dynamics of the detonation waves are studied during a descending modal transition (DMT) where four co-rotating detonations waves decrease to three in a gaseous methane-oxygen RDRE. Detonation wave tracking is applied to capture, visualize and analyze unsteady, 3D detonation wave dynamics data within the combustion chamber of the RDRE. The mechanism of a descending modal transition is the failure of a detonation wave in the RDRE, and in this study, the failing wave is identified along with its failure time. The regions upstream of each relative detonation show the mixture and flow-field parameters that drive detonation failure. Additionally, it is shown that descending modal transitions encompass multiple phases of detonation decay and recovery with respect to RDREs. The results show high upstream pressure,... [more]

April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: boost converter, circulating current, DC microgrid, multi-use platform, offshore microgrid, parallel converters
Multi-Use Platform (MUP) is a new topic addressed, extensively, under the EU funded projects that aim to exploit oceans in a sustainable way in order to reduce the costs of marine energy and to extract seafood. MUP’s electrical grid experiences many challenges, being offshore. One of these challenges is that only Alternating Current (AC) systems are considered which are inefficient, expensive and require bulky components. Considering the advantages of Direct Current (DC) systems, this paper aims to study the feasibility of using the DC system to improve the electrical infrastructure of the MUP’s grid. Floating energy unit comprising tidal, wind and solar energy resources is considered as a base unit for the MUP’s grid. The paper proposes a new distributed controller for grid voltage regulation and minimizing circulating current among parallel-connected floating energy units in an offshore Low Voltage Direct Current (LVDC) microgrid. A mathematical model is derived for n-parallel floati... [more]
Flow Configurations of Membraneless Microfluidic Fuel Cells: A Review
Muhammad Tanveer, Kwang-Yong Kim
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: co-laminar flow, counter flow, lateral flow, mass-transport losses, membraneless microfluidic fuel cell, orthogonal flow, radial flow
Membraneless microfluidic fuel cells (MMFCs) are being studied extensively as an alternative to batteries and conventional membrane fuel cells because of their simple functioning and lower manufacturing cost. MMFCs use the laminar flow of reactant species (fuel and oxidant) to eliminate the electrolyte membrane, which has conventionally been used to isolate anodic and cathodic half-cell reactions. This review article summarizes the MMFCs with six major categories of flow configurations that have been reported from 2002 to 2020. The discussion highlights the critical factors that affect and limit the performance of MMFCs. Since MMFCs are diffusion-limited, most of this review focuses on how different flow configurations act to reduce or modify diffusive mixing and depletion zones to enhance the power density output. Research opportunities are also pointed out, and the challenges in MMFCs are suggested to improve cell performance and make them practical in the near future.

April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: aeroengine thrust-to-weight ratio, blade-end slot, corner separation, full-span slot, high-turning compressor stator cascade, low blade solidity, pressure diffusing capacity
In order to comprehensively control the corner separation and the blade trailing edge (TE) separation in a high-turning compressor stator cascade, this research proposes a new combined slotted configuration consisting of one full-span slot and two blade-end slots. Taking into account the effect of the blade solidity, the performance of the original cascade and the combined slotted cascade was calculated and evaluated in a wide incidence angle range at two blade solidities. The results indicated that the blade loading and the corner separation range of the original cascade becomes larger as the blade solidity decreases from 1.66 to 1.36, which leads to higher total pressure loss and lower pressure diffusing capacity under positive incidence angles. The low-momentum fluid in the boundary layer can be significantly re-energized by the high-momentum blade-end and full-span slots jets, hence the combined slotted configuration can eliminate the blade TE separation and reduce the corner separ... Supra-Regional District Heating Networks: A Missing Infrastructure for a Sustainable Energy System
Simon Moser, Stefan Puschnigg
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: district heating, energy cooperation, industrial symbiosis, waste heat
In analogy to electricity transmission networks, this paper analyzes the concept of supra-regional district heating networks (SR-DHN), connecting a large number of actors. Using a back-casting approach, a SR-DHN is assumed to exist and thus, implementation challenges, such as economic feasibility and energy losses, are circumvented in the first step (but are analyzed in the discourse). The paper then analyzes, in an interdisciplinary qualitative manner and supported by a case study, what technical, operational, economic and legal issues must have been resolved. Results show that the heat transmission network, being the backbone of the SR-DHN, is an expensive infrastructure, but is likely to become economic in a non-fossil energy system. By decreasing the reliance on single waste heat sources, SR-DHN allows longer payback periods and can thus be an enabler for using industrial waste heat. However, involving many actors requires comprehensive contractual foundations. The derived hypothes... [more]

Le Cao Nhien, Nguyen Van Duc Long, Moonyong Lee
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: cellulosic ethanol, coproduction, hybrid distillation and absorption, lignocellulosic biomass, process integration
Cellulosic ethanol (CE) can not only be produced from a nonedible, cheap, and abundant lignocellulose feedstock but also can reduce carbon footprint significantly compared to starch ethanol. Despite great stimulation worldwide, CE production has not yet commercialized because of the complexity of lignocellulose. Therefore, intensive research and development are needed to improve CE technologies. In this study, a cost-efficient and sustainable design was proposed for the coproduction of CE, heat, and electricity from the actual lignocellulosic fermentation broth. First, a conventional coproduction process of CE, heat, and electricity based on hybrid distillation and adsorption (HDA) was simulated and optimized. Subsequently, various heat integrated (HI) techniques such as heat pump (HP), multi-effect distillation (MED), and combined HP-MED were evaluated to improve the CE process. The combined heat and power (CHP) process that utilized the combustible solids of the beer stillage was des... [more]
A New Approach for Characterizing Pile Heat Exchangers Using Thermal Response Tests
Charles Maragna, Fleur Loveridge
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: energy piles, ground-source heat pump systems, pile heat exchanger, thermal response testing
Pile heat exchangers offer a cost effective route to implementation of ground-source heat pump systems for many large commercial buildings compared with traditional boreholes. Such projects typically use thermal response tests to determine the key input parameters for system design, namely soil thermal conductivity and heat exchanger thermal resistance. However, this brings challenges for pile heat exchanger based systems, where in situ thermal response tests are known to be less reliable due to the large thermal capacity of the pile. This paper presents a new “black box” resistance capacitive model for applications to pile thermal response tests. The approach is tested against case study data and shown to perform well. Additional test duration savings are shown to be possible if a novel combination of borehole and pile thermal response tests is applied together to determine design parameters.

April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: battery, electric vehicle, energy management, hybrid energy storage system, supercapacitor
Hybrid energy storage systems (HESSs) including batteries and supercapacitors (SCs) are a trendy research topic in the electric vehicle (EV) context with the expectation of optimizing the vehicle performance and battery lifespan. Active and semi-active HESSs need to be managed by energy management strategies (EMSs), which should be realized on real-time onboard platforms. A widely used approach is the filter-based EMS thanks to its simplicity and effectiveness. However, one question that always arises with these algorithms is how to determine the appropriate constant cut-off frequency. To tackle this challenge, this paper proposed three adaptive schemes for the filtering strategies based on the SC “ability” and evaluated their performance during the vehicle operation via an intensive comparative study. Offline simulation and experimental validation using signal hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) emulation showed that the proposed adaptive filtering EMS can reduce the battery rms current consid... [more]
Comparison of Advanced Charge Strategies for Modular Cascaded Battery Chargers

April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: battery charger, Battery Energy Storage System, energy time-shift PV, ion-lithium battery
Although the literature extensively covers the development of battery chargers control strategies, a comparison of these strategies remains a literary gap. The inherent conditions (i.e., State of Health and State of Charge) of each unit in the Battery Energy Storage Systems directly influence the charger control techniques for extending battery lifetime, which makes modular battery chargers an appealing topology for this analysis. This work groups charger control strategies presented in the literature into two: Adapted SoC strategies, directly linked to the field of overstress management, and SoH strategies, which are directly linked to the field of wear-out management. The methodology for comparing the control strategies encompasses battery lifetime, charger, and photovoltaic plant models. Three distinct cases were simulated using real measure data from a solar power plant and a battery model provided by MathWorks®. The results evidence that the Capacity Fade and Energy Throughput str... [more]

Keywords: Batteries, calendar aging, capacity degradation, electric vehicle, electromobility, lithium-ion, parameter distribution, storage
The degradation of lithium-ion cells is an important aspect, not only for quality management, but also for the customer of the application like, e.g., scooters or electric vehicles. During the lifetime of the system, the overall health on the battery plays a key role in its depreciation. Therefore, it is necessary to monitor the health of the battery during operation, i.e., cycle life, but also during stationary conditions, i.e., calendar aging. In this work, the degradation due to calendar aging is analyzed for six different cell chemistries in terms of capacity degradation and impedance increase and their performance are being compared. In a new proposed metric, the relative deviations between various cells with the exact identical aging history are being analyzed for their degradation effects and their differences, which stands out in comparison to similar research. The capacity loss was found to be most drastic at 60 °C and at higher storage voltages, even for titanate-oxide cells.... [more]

Keywords: compensation mechanisms, hotspot, photovoltaics, PV forecasts, rooftop solar, utility’s impact
As rooftop PV deployment accelerates around the world, forecasts of rooftop PV penetration by geographical region and customer group are essential to guide policy and decision-making by utilities. However, most state-of-the-art forecasting tools require detailed data that are often unavailable for developing countries. A simplified analytical tool with limited data is proposed to preliminarily identify the rooftop PV “hotspots”—that is, geographical areas where many new investments into rooftop PV investments are likely to occur. The tool combines the assessment of financial and technical indicator in form of the optimal PV-to-load ratio indicating the maximum penetration of solar PV, and the capital-to-expenditure ratio indicating the ease of such investment. Using Thailand as a case study, the results from this tool show that under the self-consumption and net-billing scheme, the Northern and Northeastern regions are marked as the potential hotspots where the utility’s impact will be... April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: damp heat, ethylene vinyl acetate, polyolefin elastomer, temperature cycle
Standard damp heat (DH), temperature cycle (TC), and combined DH-TC tests were performed using monocrystalline Si 72-cell modules with a conventional ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) encapsulant, and their module performance and electroluminescence images were investigated. During the DH test, a significant drop (~20%) in the maximum output power of the module was noticed, primarily because of the degradation of fill factor and an increase in series resistance at 5500 h of DH testing (DH5500), presumably due to the corrosion of metal electrodes by moisture ingress. Conversely, it was revealed that temperature cycling did not seriously degrade module performance until 1400 cycles. However, the combined DH5000-TC600 test suggested in this study, with a sequence of DH1000-TC200-DH1000-TC200-DH1000-TC200-DH2000, was confirmed to provide harsher conditions than the DH-only test by causing a 20% decrease in maximum output power (Pmax) after DH3000/TC400. Promisingly, we confirmed that the module... [more]
Stationarity in the Prices of Energy Commodities. A Nonparametric Approach
Manuel Landajo, María José Presno, Paula Fernández González
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Biofuels, energy commodities, nonparametric, panel, prices, stationarity testing
In this paper, we address the classical problem of testing for stationarity in the prices of energy-related commodities. A panel of fourteen time series of monthly prices is analyzed for the 1980−2020 period. Nine of the series are classical nonrenewable, GHG-emissions-intensive resources (coal, crude oil, natural gas), whereas the remaining, low-emission group includes both uranium and four commodities employed in biofuels (rapeseed, palm, and soybean oils, and ethanol). A nonparametric, bootstrap-based stationarity testing framework is employed. The main advantage of this procedure is its asymptotically model-free nature, being less sensitive than parametric tests to the risks of misspecification and detection of spurious unit roots, although it has the potential limitation of typically requiring larger samples than mainstream tools. Results suggest that most of the series analyzed may be trend stationary. The only exception would be crude oil, where different conclusions are obtaine... [more]

April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: acid corrosion, H2O/CO2 turbine, initial condensation zone, numerical simulation, performance degradation
A supercritical H2O/CO2 turbine is a key piece of equipment for the coal gasification in the supercritical water (CGSW) cycle to achieve conversion of heat into power. Compared with a traditional steam turbine, the working medium of an H2O/CO2 turbine has a relatively high CO2 concentration. In the initial condensation zone (ICZ), steam condenses into droplets on the turbine blades and the droplets combine with CO2 to form carbonic acid, which corrodes the turbine blades. In order to research the characteristics of acid corrosion in the ICZ of a H2O/CO2 turbine, the acid corrosion rate of the blades in the ICZ of the H2O/CO2 turbine was calculated and analyzed based on the three-dimensional CFD (3D CFD) method and a one-dimensional numerical model of CO2 corrosion. The results suggest that acid corrosion rates decrease stage by stage in the ICZ due to the reduction in temperature and pressure. Rotor blades in the first stage in the ICZ suffer the worst and form a corrosion zone at the... [more]
