Operation of Submerged Anaerobic Membrane Bioreactors at 20 °C: Effect of Solids Retention Time on Flux, Mixed Liquor Characteristics and Performance
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Operations
Keywords: ambient temperature, anaerobic membrane bioreactors, mean cell residence time, membrane fouling, wastewater treatment
Four flat-sheet submerged anaerobic membrane bioreactors ran for 242 days on a simulated domestic wastewater with low Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) and high suspended solids. Organic loading was maintained around 1.0 g COD L−1 day−1, while solids retention time (SRT) was varied from 20−90 days. This was achieved at a constant membrane flux, maintained by adjusting transmembrane pressure (TMP) in the range 1.8−9.8 kPa. Membrane fouling was assessed based on the required TMP, with mixed liquors characterised using capillary suction time, frozen image centrifugation and quantification of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS). SRT had a significant effect on these parameters: fouling was least at an SRT of 30 days and highest at 60 days, with some reduction as this extended to 90 days. Operation at SRT < 30 days showed no further benefits. Although operation at a short SRT was optimal for membrane performance it led to lower specific methane productivity, higher biomass yields and hig... [more]

Liquid Hot Water Pretreatment of Lignocellulosic Biomass at Lab and Pilot Scale
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Operations
Keywords: autohydrolysis, biorefinery, lignocellulosic biomass, liquid hot water, pilot plant, pretreatment
Liquid hot water pretreatment is considered to be a promising method for increasing biomass digestibility due to the moderate operational conditions without chemical additions. A necessary step towards the scalability of this pretreatment process is performing pilot plant trials. Upscaling was evaluated with a scaling factor of 500, by using 50 mL in the laboratory and 25 L in a pilot plant batch reactor. Pretreatment times were varied from 30 to 240 min, and temperatures used were 180−188 °C, while applying similar heating profiles at both scales. The initial mass fraction of poplar wood chips ranged from 10% to 16%. Liquid hot water pretreatment at laboratory and pilot scale led to analogous results. The acetic acid analysis of the liquid and solid fractions obtained after pretreatment indicated that complete deacetylation of poplar biomass can be achieved.

Application of Ultrasonic Atomization in a Combined Circulation System of Spray Evaporative Cooling and Air Cooling for Electric Machines
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Operations
Keywords: air cooling, airflow friction loss, electric machines, evaporative cooling, spray, ultrasonic atomization
A combined circulation system of spray evaporative cooling and air cooling (CCSSECAC) is a way to enhance the cooling performance of an air-cooled electric machine while maintaining its existing structure. Based on a traditional air-cooled machine, when the discrete evaporative cooling medium particles are scattered into the airflow, they will reach the heat source with the air circulation. The cooling capacity of the cooling system is enhanced simultaneously through the phase transition and convection heat transfer. Ultrasonic atomization is a simple way to produce tiny droplets and a good way to improve the performance of CCSSECAC. To verify the effectiveness of such a system, a principle test model was built and a multi-operational condition experiment was carried out as an exploratory study. The experimental results showed that the new cooling system was feasible for horizontal machines, and the stator coil temperature was significantly reduced compared with the air-cooled mode.

Deep Ultraviolet AlGaN-Based Light-Emitting Diodes with p-AlGaN/AlGaN Superlattice Hole Injection Structures
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Operations
Keywords: AlGaN superlattice, hole injection, light-emitting diode
The p-AlGaN/AlGaN superlattice (SL) hole injection structure was introduced into deep ultraviolet (DUV) light-emitting diodes (LEDs) to enhance their performances. The period thicknesses of the p-Al0.8Ga0.2N/Al0.48Ga0.52N SLs affected the performances of the DUV LEDs. The appropriate period thickness of the p-Al0.8Ga0.2N/Al0.48Ga0.52N SL may enhance the hole injection of DUV LEDs. Therefore, compared with the reference LEDs, the DUV LEDs with the 10-pair Al0.8Ga0.2N (1 nm)/Al0.48Ga0.52N (1 nm) SL presented forward voltage reduction of 0.23 V and light output power improvement of 15% at a current of 350 mA. Furthermore, the 10-pair Al0.8Ga0.2N (1 nm)/Al0.48Ga0.52N (1 nm) SL could slightly suppress the Auger recombination and current overflow of the DUV LEDs in a high-current operation region. In addition to improved carrier injection, the DUV LEDs with the p-Al0.8Ga0.2N/Al0.48Ga0.52N SL hole injection structure showed reduced light absorption at their emission wavelength compared with t... February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Operations
Keywords: 2,5-furandicarboxaldehyde, 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid, chemoenzymatic oxidation, continuous oxidation, fed-batch oxidation
This work explores for the first time the use of a fed-batch and continuous packed-bed millibioreactor for the chemoenzymatic oxidation of 2,5-furandicarboxaldehyde (DFF) to 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA). Different operational variables were studied: temperature, substrate concentration, and flow rate using different reactors (batch, fed-batch, and a continuous packed-bed bioreactor). The best yield (100%) was achieved using the fed-batch reactor at an H2O2 flow rate of 3 µL/min with a substrate concentration (DFF) of 100 mM. Regarding the specific productivity, the highest values (>0.05 mg product/min g biocatalyst) were reached with the operation in the fed-batch bioreactor and the continuous packed-bed bioreactor. The yield of the biocatalyst decreased by 98% after the first reaction cycle during the operational stability tests, due to a substantial inactivation of the biocatalyst by H2O2 and peracid. In this study, it is possible to select the operational variables in fed-batch... [more]

Research on the Influence of a Cuttings Bed on Drill String Friction Torque in Horizontal Well Sections
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Operations
Keywords: cuttings, friction torque, horizontal well, well drilling
Horizontal well drills are difficult to operate and require high borehole cleaning operations. The impact of cuttings accumulation on friction and torque cannot be ignored. In the process of horizontal well drilling, it is very easy to form a cuttings bed in the highly inclined eccentric annulus. The formation of the cuttings bed will not only increase the friction torque but also have a greater impact on the annulus flow. Based on the application of gas drilling in horizontal wells, this paper uses laboratory experiments to study the influence of cuttings with different particle sizes and lithology on the friction coefficient between the drill string and the borehole wall of the horizontal well section. In addition, in view of the difficulty in the migration of cuttings in gas drilling horizontal wells and the formation of cuttings deposits, this paper carries out an experimental study on the effect of the cuttings bed on drill pipe coating height and cuttings bed thickness on frictio... Time-of-Use Pricing Strategy of Integrated Energy System Based on Game Theory
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Operations
Keywords: demand response, integrated energy system, Nash equilibrium, Stackelberg game, time-of-use pricing
The integrated energy system is the mainstream energy utilization form of integrating a power system, natural gas system and thermal system, which provides a new way to solve the problem of renewable energy accommodation. The integrated energy system includes a variety of energy generation and conversion equipment, and its internal electricity, gas, cooling and thermal systems must balance the multiple energy supplies required by users. The integrated energy supplier (IES) and integrated energy user (IEU), as different stakeholders, pursue the maximization of their own profit. However, integrated energy suppliers should consider their market share and the sustainability of participating in market competition. Based on the constraints of energy access, conversion and accommodation, and the equipment for energy generation, conversion and consumption, we established an energy flow model. Constrained by the dynamic equilibrium of the supply of integrated energy suppliers and the demand of... [more]

Bridging the Operational Efficiency Differences between Franchisors and Franchisees: A Metafrontier Approach
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Operations
Keywords: coffee franchise, Mann–Whitney U test, metafrontier DEA, premium and mainstream brand
A franchise business is a contractual relationship in which the franchisor and franchisee should cooperate to promote sustainable growth of their franchise entities. However, it is still unclear whether the relationship between franchisees and franchisors is a principal−agent or a business partner sharing a business goal. Thus, this study is a first attempt to investigate the relationship between franchisees and franchises using metafrontier and bootstrap DEA from the perspective of efficiency. We measured the efficiency of coffee franchises in Korea, which have grown rapidly in recent years despite the COVID-19 pandemic. Based on the bootstrap DEA results, there was a statistically significant difference in efficiency between franchisors and franchisees under the variable return-to-scale assumption. While the main cause of inefficiency in premium coffee chains is attributed to scale inefficiency, most franchisees have pure technological inefficiency. Thus, coffee franchisees can impro... [more]

Experimental Study on the Effect of Hydraulic Deterioration of Different Drainage Systems on Lining Water Pressure
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Operations
Keywords: field test, hydraulic deterioration, model test, road tunnel, waterproof and drainage system
With the increasing operation time of tunnels, the drainage system cannot fulfil its proper function as a result of the deterioration of traditional waterproof and drainage systems (TWDS), such as the blockage of drainage blind pipes and the failure of drainage boards. Therefore, the lining bears a high water pressure and even causes disasters such as tunnel leakage and lining cracking. An effective solution to mitigate these issues is to adjust the tunnel drainage scheme. In view of this, a composite waterproof and drainage system (CWDS) is proposed in this paper. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed system, a series of model experiments were conducted to study the change law of the seepage field of two drainage systems under different blockage conditions. The study results showed that longitudinal blind pipe blockage caused a more significant increase in water pressure than circular blind pipe blockage. In the case of blind pipe blockage, the water pressure of the TWDS tunnels... [more]

Subject: Process Operations
Keywords: fluorescein, micromixing, PLIF, Rhodamine B, T-jet mixer, test-reactions
This work aimed to test and optimise reactive Planar Laser-Induced Fluorescence (PLIF) methods for the visualisation of the micromixing regions in chemical reactors using standard PLIF and Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) equipment with the laser source 512 nm. Two methods were tested: (i) an acid−base reaction with fluorescein as the reaction-sensitive tracer and (ii) Fenton’s reaction, with Rhodamine B as the reaction tracer. Both test-reactions were studied in stopped-flow equipment to define suitable operational conditions, namely the chemical composition of the inflow streams, the concentration of reagents and fluorophore, and suitable excitation light wavelength. The visualisation of the micromixing regions was tested in a continuous flow reactor with a T-jet geometry. A laser light sheet emitted from an Nd:YAG laser illuminated the axial section of the demonstration reactor. The mixing dynamics and the reaction course were visualised with the acid−base reactive PLIF images. Fent... [more]

February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Operations
Keywords: forced periodic modulation, formic acid decomposition, non-stationary CSTR, Process Intensification, TiO2
The effect of forced periodic modulation of several input parameters on the rate of photocatalytic decomposition of formic acid over a TiO2 thin film catalyst has been investigated in a continuously stirred tank reactor. The kinetic model was adopted based on the literature and it includes acid adsorption, desorption steps, the formation of photocatalytic active sites and decomposition of the adsorbed species over the active titania sites. A reactor model was developed that describes mass balances of reactive species. The analysis of the reactor was performed with a computer-aided nonlinear frequency response method. Initially, the effect of amplitude and frequency of four input parameters (flowrate, acid concentration, temperature and light intensity) were studied. All single inputs provided only a minor improvement, which did not exceed 4%. However, a modulation of two input parameters, inlet flowrate and the acid molar fraction, considerably improved the acid conversion from 80 to 9... [more]

Probabilistic Vulnerability Assessment of Transmission Lines Considering Cascading Failures
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Operations
Keywords: cascading failures, fault chain, transmission line vulnerability
The prevention of cascading failures and large-scale power outages of power grids by identifying weak links has become one of the key topics in power systems research. In this paper, a vulnerability radius index is proposed to identify the initial fault, and a fault chain model of cascading failure is developed with probabilistic attributes to identify the set of fault chains that have a significant impact on the safe and stable operation of power grids. On this basis, a method for evaluating the vulnerability of transmission lines based on a multi-criteria decision analysis is proposed, which can quickly identify critical transmission lines in the process of cascading failure. Finally, the proposed model and method for identifying vulnerable lines during the cascading failure process is demonstrated on the IEEE-118 bus system.

Complex Network Analysis of Photovoltaic Plant Operations and Failure Modes
February 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Operations
Keywords: complex network analysis, data fusion, fault prognosis, photovoltaic plants, sensor network
This paper presents a novel data-driven approach, based on sensor network analysis in Photovoltaic (PV) power plants, to unveil hidden precursors in failure modes. The method is based on the analysis of signals from PV plant monitoring, and advocates the use of graph modeling techniques to reconstruct and investigate the connectivity among PV field sensors, as is customary for Complex Network Analysis (CNA) approaches. Five month operation data are used in the present study. The results showed that the proposed methodology is able to discover specific hidden dynamics, also referred to as emerging properties in a Complexity Science perspective, which are not visible in the observation of individual sensor signal but are closely linked to the relationships occurring at the system level. The application of exploratory data analysis techniques on those properties demonstrated, for the specific plant under scrutiny, potential for early fault detection.

Energy Balance and Local Unsteady Loss Analysis of Flows in a Low Specific Speed Model Pump-Turbine in the Positive Slope Region on the Pump Performance Curve
February 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Operations
Keywords: energy balance, instability, positive slope, pump-turbine, unsteady loss analysis
The positive slope on the pump performance curve of pump-turbines suggests potential operational instabilities in pump mode. Previous research has indicated that the increase of the hydraulic loss caused by sudden changes of flow patterns in pump-turbines is responsible for the positive slope, however its detailed flow mechanism is still unclear. A low specific speed model pump-turbine was numerically investigated against experiments in the present study, by applying unsteady RANS (Reynolds-Averaged Navier−Stokes equations) simulations with a v2-f turbulence model. The mechanism of occurrence of the positive slope on the pump performance curve was discussed regarding the energy balance, as this region appears when the value of ∂ P u ∂ Q is larger than the critical value P u Q . An unsteady local loss analysis, derived from the energy equation, was conducted to illustrate the contribution of local flow patterns to the loss in corresponding hydraulic componen... [more]

A Smart Grid Framework for Optimally Integrating Supply-Side, Demand-Side and Transmission Line Management Systems
February 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Operations
Keywords: ConCEMS, demand response, DTLR, dynamic pricing, ExC-GA
A coordinated centralized energy management system (ConCEMS) is presented in this paper that seeks to integrate for optimal grid operation—the supply side energy management system (SSEMS), home energy management system (HEMS) and transmission line management system (TLMS). ConCEMS in ensuring the optimal operation of an IEEE 30-bus electricity network harmonizes the individual objective function of SSEMS, HEMS and TLMS to evolve an optimal dispatch of participating demand response (DR) loads that does not violate transmission line ampacity limits (TLMS constraint) while minimizing consumer cost (HEMS constraint) and supply side operations cost (SSEMS constraint). An externally constrained genetic algorithm (ExC-GA) that is influenced by feedback from TLMS is also presented that intelligently varies the dispatch time of participating DR loads to meet the individual objective functions. Hypothetical day ahead dynamic pricing schemes (Price1, Price2 and Price3) have also been adopted alon... [more]

Subject: Process Operations
Keywords: exhaustive load flow (ELF), improved analytic (IA), load concentration factor (LCF), operational power factor, loss minimization, loss sensitivity factor (LSF), multiple distributed generatores (DGs), primary distribution system, simultaneous optimal sizing, voltage profile improvement
This paper presents novel separate methods for finding optimal locations, sizes of multiple distributed generators (DGs) simultaneously and operational power factor in order to minimize power loss and improve the voltage profile in the distribution system. A load concentration factor (LCF) is introduced to select the optimal location(s) for DG placement. Exact loss formula based analytical expressions are derived for calculating the optimal sizes of any number of DGs simultaneously. Since neither optimizing the location nor optimizing the size is done iteratively, like existing methods do, the simulation time is reduced considerably. The exhaustive method is used to find the operational power factor, and it is shown with the results that the losses are further reduced and voltage profile is improved by operating the DGs at operational power factor. Results for power loss reduction and voltage profile improvement in IEEE 37 and 119 node radial distribution systems are presented and comp... [more]

Subject: Process Operations
Keywords: Currents Physical Components, non-sinusoidal power, nonlinear receiver, power theory
This article presents an analysis of electrical parameters in a three-phase circuit characterized by the generation of harmonics. The Currents Physical Components (CPC) power theory for three-phase circuits were used. Relationships for three-wire circuits were used, and mathematical relationships were determined to enable decomposition into those components that depend on the direction of energy flow and the reasons for their creation. A calculation example using the previously determined dependencies was presented, and the results of the calculations were discussed. When mathematical analyses are required in circuits with non-linear receivers, and in particular, when there is a cooperation of several such receivers with a common power grid, the calculation concept presented is important. The generation of identical harmonic orders by several receivers causes a disturbance in the direction of energy flow in the power grid. Keywords: isolated operation mode, primary frequency regulation, sensitivity analysis, variable-speed pumped storage plants
Primary frequency regulation (PFR) is a crucial operating condition for PSPs to realise frequency modulation, and the effectiveness of PFR is significant to the stability of power system frequency. Several challenges and risks have been presented in the PFR process for conventional PSPs, especially for those which run in the isolated grid, such as water inertia, negative damping of speed governor and ultra-low frequency oscillation (ULFO). Variable-speed pumped storage plants (VSPSPs) have the potential to overcome the negative impacts on regulation performance caused by hydraulic factors, due to the advantages of rapid power regulation and independent active power control from turbine output. In this paper, the primary task is to conduct a comprehensive assessment for PFR performance of VSPSPs in isolated power systems.
