Fuzzy Logic−Based Decentralized Voltage−Frequency Control and Inertia Control of a VSG-Based Isolated Microgrid System
Baheej Alghamdi
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: artificial neural network, decentralized control, frequency control, Genetic Algorithm, isolated microgrids, virtual inertia, virtual synchronous generators, voltage control
This work proposes the use of fuzzy-logic-based voltage frequency control (VFC) and adaptive inertia to improve the frequency response of a virtual synchronous generator (VSG)-based isolated microgrid system. The joint VFC and inertial control scheme is proposed to limit frequency deviations in these isolated microgrid systems, mainly caused by the increasing penetration of intermittent distributed energy resources, which lack rotational inertia. The proposed controller uses artificial neural networks (ANN) to estimate the exponent of voltage-dependent loads and modulate the system frequency by adjusting the output voltage of the VSGs, which increases the system’s active power reserves while providing inertial control by adjusting the inertia of VSGs to minimize frequency and VSG DC-link voltage excursions. A genetic algorithm (GA)-based optimization strategy is developed to optimally adjust the parameters of the fuzzy logic controller to diminish the impact of disturbances on the syst... [more]

Keywords: artificial Neural Networks, Federated Learning, smart cities, smartphone, transport mode detection
Data on transport usage is important in a wide range of areas. These data are often obtained manually through costly and inaccurate interviews. In the last decade, several researchers explored the use of smartphone sensors for the automatic detection of transport modes. However, such works have focused on developing centralized machine learning mechanisms. This centralized approach requires user data to be transferred to a central server and, therefore, does not satisfy a transport mode detection mechanism’s practical response time and privacy needs. This research presents the Federated System for Transport Mode Detection (FedTM). The main contribution of FedTM is exploring Federated Learning on transport mode detection using smartphone sensors. In FedTM, both the training and inference process is moved to the client side (smartphones), reducing response time and increasing privacy. The FedTM was designed using a Neural Network for the classification task and obtained an average accura... [more]

Balancing the production and consumption of electricity is an urgent task. Its implementation largely depends on the means and methods of planning electricity production. Forecasting is one of the planning tools since the availability of an accurate forecast is a mechanism for increasing the validity of management decisions. This study provides an overview of the methods used to predict electricity supply requirements to different objects. The methods have been reviewed analytically, taking into account the forecast classification according to the anticipation period. In this way, the methods used in operative, short-term, medium-term, and long-term forecasting have been considered. Both classical and modern forecasting methods have been identified when forecasting electric energy consumption. Classical forecasting methods are based on the theory of regression and statistical analysis (regression, autoregressive models); probabilistic forecasting methods and modern forecasting methods... Keywords: artificial neural networks, Big Data, data mining, exogenous data, hyperparameter optimization, nontechnical losses, outliers identification, power system distribution
Nontechnical losses (NTL) are irregularities in the consumption of electricity and mainly caused by theft and fraud. NTLs can be characterized as outliers in historical data series. The use of computational tools to identify outliers is the subject of research around the world, and in this context, artificial neural networks (ANN) are applicable. ANNs are machine learning models that learn through experience, and their performance is associated with the quality of the training data together with the optimization of the model’s architecture and hyperparameters. This article proposes a complete solution (end-to-end) using the ANN multilayer perceptron (MLP) model with supervised classification learning. For this, data mining concepts are applied to exogenous data, specifically the ambient temperature, and endogenous data from energy companies. The association of these data results in the improvement of the model’s input data that impact the identification of consumer units with NTLs. The... [more]

Electric power systems have experienced the rapid insertion of distributed renewable generating sources and, as a result, are facing planning and operational challenges as new grid connections are made. The complexity of this management and the degree of uncertainty increase significantly and need to be better estimated. Considering the high volatility of photovoltaic generation and its impacts on agents in the electricity sector, this work proposes a multivariate strategy based on design of experiments (DOE), principal component analysis (PCA), artificial neural networks (ANN) that combines the resulting outputs using Mixture DOE (MDOE) for photovoltaic generation prediction a day ahead. The approach separates the data into seasons of the year and considers multiple climatic variables for each period. Here, the dimensionality reduction of climate variables is performed through PCA. Through DOE, the possibilities of combining prediction parameters, such as those of ANN, were reduced, w... [more]

Keywords: advantage seepage channel, artificial neural network, correlation analysis, MAML, meta-learning
As the water injection oilfield enters into the high water cut stage, a large number of water flooding advantage seepage channels are formed in the local reservoir dynamically changing with the water injection process, which seriously affects the water injection development effect. In oilfield production, water injection and fluid production profile test data are direct evidence to identify advantage seepage channels. In recent years, some scholars have carried out research related to the identification of advantage seepage channels based on machine learning methods; however, the insufficient profile test data limit the quantity and quality of learning samples, leading to problems such as low prediction accuracy of learning models. Therefore, the author proposes a new method of advantage seepage channel identification based on meta-learning techniques, using the MAML algorithm to optimize the neural network model so that the model can still perform well in the face of training tasks wi... Keywords: artificial neural networks, condition monitoring, fault diagnosis, SCADA, wind energy, wind turbines
Wind turbines are expected to provide on the order of 50% of the electricity worldwide in the near future, and it is therefore fundamental to reduce the costs associated with this form of energy conversion, which regard maintenance as the first item of expenditure. SCADA-based condition monitoring for anomaly detection is commonly presented as a convenient solution for fault diagnosis on turbine components. However, its suitability is generally proven by empirical analyses which are limited in time and based on a circumscribed number of turbines. To cope with this lack of validation, this paper performs a controlled experiment to evaluate the suitability of SCADA-based condition monitoring for fault diagnosis in a fleet of eight turbines monitored for over 11 years. For the controlled experiment, a weakly supervised method was used to model the normal behavior of the turbine component. Such a model is instantiated as a convolutional neural network. The method, instantiated as a thresho... [more]

Keywords: artificial neural network, distillation column, small datasets, soft sensor, transfer learning
In the development of soft sensors for industrial processes, the availability of data for data-driven modeling is usually limited, which led to overfitting and lack of interpretability when conventional deep learning models were used. In this study, the proposed soft sensor development methodology combining first-principle simulations and transfer learning was used to address these problems. Source-domain models were obtained using a large amount of data generated by dynamic simulations. They were then fine-tuned by a limited amount of real plant data to improve their prediction accuracies on the target domain and guaranteed the models with correct domain knowledge. An industrial C4 separation column operating at a refining unit was used as an example to illustrate the effectiveness of this approach. Results showed that fine-tuned networks could obtain better accuracy and improved interpretability compared to a simple feedforward network with or without regularization, especially when... [more]

As third-generation neural network models, spiking neural P systems (SNP) have distributed parallel computing capabilities with good performance. In recent years, artificial neural networks have received widespread attention due to their powerful information processing capabilities, which is an effective combination of a class of biological neural networks and mathematical models. However, SNP systems have some shortcomings in numerical calculations. In order to improve the incompletion of current SNP systems in dealing with certain real data technology in this paper, we use neural network structure and data processing methods for reference. Combining them with membrane computing, spiking neural membrane computing models (SNMC models) are proposed. In SNMC models, the state of each neuron is a real number, and the neuron contains the input unit and the threshold unit. Additionally, there is a new style of rules for neurons with time delay. The aim of the study was to estimate the optimal parameters of apple drying and the rehydration temperature of the obtained dried apple. Conducting both processes under such conditions is aimed at restoring the rehydrated apple to the raw material properties. The obtained drying parameters allow the drying process to be carried out in a short drying time (DT) and at low energy consumption (EC). The effect of air velocity (vd), drying temperature (Td), characteristic dimension (CD), and rehydration temperature (Tr) on rehydrated apple quality was studied. Quality parameters of the rehydrated apple as: color change (CC), mass gain ratio (MG), solid loss ratio (SL), volume gain ratio (VG) together with DT and EC were taken into consideration. The artificial neural network was used for modeling of rehydrated apple quality parameters, DT, and EC. A multi-objective genetic algorithm was developed in order to optimize parameters of the drying and rehydration processes. The simultaneous minimi... [more]

Keywords: artificial neural network, bagging, class imbalance problem, Machine Learning, random under-sampling, static voltage stability
The increase in demand and generator reaching reactive power limits may operate the power system in stressed conditions leading to voltage instability. Thus, the voltage stability assessment is essential for estimating the loadability margin of the power system. The grid operators urgently need a voltage stability assessment (VSA) method with high accuracy, fast response speed, and good scalability. The static VSA problem is defined as a regression problem. Moreover, an artificial neural network is constructed for online assessment of the regression problem. Firstly, the training sample set is obtained through scene simulation, power flow calculation, and local voltage stability index calculation; then, the class imbalance problem of the training samples is solved by the random under-sampling bagging (RUSBagging) method. Then, the mapping relationship between each feature and voltage stability is obtained by an artificial neural network. Finally, taking the modified IEEE39 node system... [more]

Keywords: ANN, condition monitoring, deep learning, finite element method, gear pump
Sensor acquired signal has been a fundamental measure in rotary machinery condition monitoring (CM) to enhance system reliability and stability. Inappropriate sensor mounting can lead to loss of fault-related information and generate false alarms in industrial systems. To ensure reliable system operation, in this paper we investigate a system’s multiple degrees-of-freedom (DOF) using the finite element method (FEM) to find the optimum sensor mounting position. An appropriate sensor position is obtained by the highest degree of deformation in FEM modal analysis. The effectiveness of the proper sensor mounting position was compared with two other sensor mounting points, which were selected arbitrarily. To validate the effectiveness of this method we considered a gear-actuator test bench, where the sensors were mounted in the same place as the FEM simulation. Vibration data were acquired through these sensors for different health states of the system and failure patterns were recognized u... [more]

Keywords: ammonia removal and recovery, artificial neural network, response surface methodology
Waste streams with high ammonia nitrogen (NH3-N) concentrations are very commonly produced due to human intervention and often end up in waterbodies with effluent discharge. The removal of NH3-N from wastewater is therefore of utmost importance to alleviate water quality issues including eutrophication and fouling. In the present study, vacuum thermal stripping of NH3-N from high strength synthetic wastewater was conducted using a rotary evaporator and the process was optimized and modeled using response surface methodology (RSM) and RSM−artificial neural network (ANN) approaches. RSM was first employed to evaluate the process performance using three independent variables, namely pH, temperature (°C) and stripping time (min), and the optimal conditions for NH3-N removal (response) were determined. Later, the obtained data from the designed experiments of RSM were used to train the ANN for predicting the responses. NH3-N removal was found to be 97.84 ± 1.86% under the optimal conditions... Keywords: artificial neural network, hybrid modeling, lithium recovery, membrane separation
This study proposed a hybrid modeling framework for membrane separation processes where lithium from batteries is recovered. This is a pertinent problem nowadays as lithium batteries are popularized in hybrid and electric vehicles. The hybrid model is based on an artificial intelligence (AI) structure to model the mass transfer resistance of several experimental separations found in the literature. It is also based on a phenomenological model to represent the transient system regime. An optimization framework was designed to perform the AI model training and simultaneously solve the Ordinary Differential Equation (ODE) system representing the phenomenological model. The results demonstrate that the hybrid model can better represent the experimental validation sets than the phenomenological model alone. This strategy opens doors for further investigations of this system.

Calcium chloride brine-based drill-in fluid is commonly used within the reservoir section, as it is specially formulated to maximize drilling experience, and to protect the reservoir from being damaged. Monitoring the drilling fluid rheology including plastic viscosity, P V , apparent viscosity, A V , yield point, Y p , flow behavior index, n , and flow consistency index, k , has great importance in evaluating hole cleaning and optimizing drilling hydraulics. Therefore, it is very crucial for the mud rheology to be checked periodically during drilling, in order to control its persistent change.
