A Bilevel Stochastic Optimization Framework for Market-Oriented Transmission Expansion Planning Considering Market Power
April 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: bilevel programming, KKT conditions, market power, mixed-integer linear/quadratic programming, stochastic programming, transmission expansion planning
Market power, defined as the ability to raise prices above competitive levels profitably, continues to be a prime concern in the restructured electricity markets. Market power must be mitigated to improve market performance and avoid inefficient generation investment, price volatility, and overpayment in power systems. For this reason, involving market power in the transmission expansion planning (TEP) problem is essential for ensuring the efficient operation of the electricity markets. In this regard, a methodological bilevel stochastic framework for the TEP problem that explicitly includes the market power indices in the upper level is proposed, aiming to restrict the potential market power execution. A mixed-integer linear/quadratic programming (MILP/MIQP) reformulation of the stochastic bilevel model is constructed utilizing Karush−Kuhn−Tucker (KKT) conditions. Wind power and electricity demand uncertainty are incorporated using scenario-based two-stage stochastic programming. The... [more]

Chemical Elements Content and Distributions within Different Tissue Types of White Spruce
April 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: bioenergy, carbon content, hydrogen content, nitrogen content, stand density management, ultimate analyses, volatile carbon, white spruce, wood biomass, wood drying methodologies
The relative proportions of different chemical components in wood tissues is one of the underlying factors that control wood properties. These proportions vary within and between woody tissues, and an accurate description of these variations is critical for parameterizing forest biogeochemical budgets and models. White spruce (Picea glauca (Moench) Voss) spacing intensities trials in the Petawawa Research Forest, Ontario, Canada, were sampled to evaluate variations in carbon (C), nitrogen (N), and hydrogen (H) concentrations between different tissue types, i.e., bark, cambium, knots, earlywood, latewood, and wood. Samples were freeze-dried and oven-dried to test the impact of the drying methods on these chemical elements. Freeze-dried C (51.14) and H (6.18) concentrations were significantly higher than those of oven-dried C (50.55) and H (6.06). Freeze-dried N (0.18) did not differ from oven-dried N (0.17). The spacing intensities impacted C, H, and N, with C content being higher in wi... [more]

Oxidation Kinetics of Neat Methyl Oleate and as a Blend with Solketal
April 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: alcohol influence, biodiesel aging, methyl oleate, oxidation kinetics, sequence of aging products, solketal
The complexity of biodiesel aging has shown that the mechanism needs further research. The rate of aging product formation and associated interactions can help improve fuel quality. Since biodiesel is a multicomponent system and constant changes occur in the chemical environment, which interactions yield which products must be shown in more detail. Particularly under observation was the correlation between peroxides and epoxides. In addition, it is critical that the influence and interactions of new drop-in fuel candidates be investigated. In this work, the kinetics of the formation of aging products of methyl oleate (C18:1) are studied. The aim was to reduce the complexity in order to be able to make more precise and detailed statements about the mechanism. Ketones, acids, peroxide, and epoxide values were recorded. A distinction is made between pure methyl oleate and mixtures with 3 wt% isopropylidene glycerine (solketal). After solketal decomposed in the blends, the aging process sh... [more]

Graph-Based Computational Methods for Efficient Management and Energy Conservation in Smart Cities
April 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: GIS, graph transformations, smart cities, street lighting
Computational methods play a significant role in reducing energy consumption in cities. Many different sensor networks (e.g., traffic intensity sensors, intelligent cameras, air quality monitoring systems) generate data that can be useful for both efficient management (including planning) and reducing energy usage. Street lighting is one of the most significant contributors to urban power consumption. This paper presents a summary of recent attempts to use computational methods to reduce energy usage by lighting systems, with special focus on graph-based methods. Such algorithms require all the necessary data to be integrated, in order to function properly: this task is not trivial, and is very time-consuming; therefore, the second part of the paper proposes a novel approach to integrating urban datasets and automating the optimisation process. In two practical examples, we show how spatially triggered graph transformations (STGT) can be used to build a model based on the road network... [more]

Identification of Key Events and Emissions during Thermal Abuse Testing on NCA 18650 Cells
April 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: System Identification
Keywords: AAS, FT-IR, gas analysis, ICP-OES, lithium-ion batteries, SEM-EDS, thermal abuse test, thermal runaway, venting
Thermal abuse of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) leads to the emission of gases, solids, fires and/or explosions. Therefore, it is essential to define the temperatures at which key events occur (i.e., CID activation, venting, and thermal runaway (TR)) and to identify the related emissions for identifying the hazards to which people and especially rescue teams are exposed. For this purpose, thermal abuse tests were performed on commercial lithium nickel cobalt aluminum oxide (NCA) 18650 cells at 50% state of charge in a reactor connected to an FT-IR spectrometer by varying test conditions (feed gas of N2 or air; heating rates of 5 or 10 °C/min until 300 °C). In particular, the concentrations of the gases and the composition of the condensed-phase emissions were estimated. As regards gases, a high concentration (1695 ppmv) of hydrofluoric acid (HF) was measured, while the emissions of condensed matter consisted of organic compounds such as polyethylene oxide and paraffin oil, and inorganic... Novel Planning Methodology for Spatially Optimized RES Development Which Minimizes Flexibility Requirements for Their Integration into the Power System
April 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: constrained least squares, decarbonization, flexibility, Optimization, RES capacity expansion planning
An optimization model which determines optimal spatial allocation of wind (WPPs) and PV power plants (PVPPs) for an energy independent power system is developed in this paper. Complementarity of the natural generation profiles of WPPs and PVPPs, as well as differences between generation profiles of WPPs and PVPPs located in different regions, gives us opportunity to optimize the generation capacity structure and spatial allocation of renewable energy sources (RES) in order to satisfy the energy needs while alleviating the total flexibility requirements in the power system. The optimization model is based on least squared error minimization under constraints where the error represents the difference between total wind and solar generation and the referent consumption profile. This model leverages between total energy and total power requirements that flexibility resources in the considered power system need to provide in the sense that the total balancing energy minimization implicitly... Thermomechanical and Thermofluid-Dynamic Coupled Analysis of the Top Cap Region of the Water-Cooled Lithium Lead Breeding Blanket for the EU DEMO Fusion Reactor
April 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: breeding blanket, coupled analysis, DEMO, thermofluid dynamics, thermomechanics, WCLL BB
In the EU, the Water-Cooled Lithium Lead (WCLL) Breeding Blanket (BB) concept is one of the candidates for the design of the DEMO reactor. From the past campaign of analysis emerged that the thermal-induced stress led to the failure in the verification of the RCC-MRx structural criteria. Hence, in this paper the classic conceptual design approach, based on a pure FEM thermal and structural analysis, is compared to a coupled thermofluid-dynamic/structural one. Even though the coupled approach requires tremendous modelling effort and computational burden, it surely allows determining the thermal field with a higher level of detail than the FEM analysis. Therefore, in this work, the focus is put on the impact of a more detailed thermal field on the DEMO WCLL BB global structural performances, focusing on the Top Cap region of its Central Outboard Blanket segment. The obtained results have allowed confirming the soundness of the design solution of the Top Cap region, except for concerns ar... [more]

Multi-Microgrid Collaborative Optimization Scheduling Using an Improved Multi-Agent Soft Actor-Critic Algorithm
April 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: automated machine learning, collaborative optimization, multi-agent deep reinforcement learning, multi-microgrid
The implementation of a multi-microgrid (MMG) system with multiple renewable energy sources enables the facilitation of electricity trading. To tackle the energy management problem of an MMG system, which consists of multiple renewable energy microgrids belonging to different operating entities, this paper proposes an MMG collaborative optimization scheduling model based on a multi-agent centralized training distributed execution framework. To enhance the generalization ability of dealing with various uncertainties, we also propose an improved multi-agent soft actor-critic (MASAC) algorithm, which facilitates energy transactions between multi-agents in MMG, and employs automated machine learning (AutoML) to optimize the MASAC hyperparameters to further improve the generalization of deep reinforcement learning (DRL). The test results demonstrate that the proposed method successfully achieves power complementarity between different entities and reduces the MMG system’s operating cost. Ad... [more]

April 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: differential power processing, photovoltaic system, space solar power station, structure optimization
In the face of the increasing depletion of non-renewable energy sources and increasingly serious environmental problems, the development of green and environmentally friendly renewable energy sources cannot be delayed. Because of the far-reaching development potential of solar energy, solar power has become an important research object for power development. The available solar energy in space is several times greater than that on Earth. Solar energy from space can be collected by a space solar power station (SSPS) and transmitted to the ground by wireless power transfer. In the full-chain ground-based validation system of SSPS-OMEGA, the spherical concentrator is used, and the light intensity distribution on the solar receiver is non-uniform. The non-uniform light intensity makes the output current of each photovoltaic (PV) cell on the solar receiver greatly different, and causes power losses, known as the mismatch problem. This paper proposes a simple, efficient and easy-to-implement... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: downhole tubular mechanics, failure mechanism, heavy oil, integrated injection-production string, thermal recovery well
The integrated injection-production string is the core tool used in thermal recovery wells for heavy oil, the mechanical behavior of which is complex due to the coupling effect of downhole temperature and pressure and the load induced by steam huff and puff operations. In this paper, an analysis model that calculates the temperature and pressure field during steam huff and puff operations has been established based on the basic principles of energy conservation and heat transfer. Then, the force distribution and strength check of the integrated injection-production string were analyzed. The fatigue damage of the string was evaluated by considering dynamic loads during the injection process. The corrosion life of the string was predicted. Finally, the failure mechanism of the integrated injection-production string in thermal recovery wells for heavy oil was illustrated. Second-Life Battery Capacity Estimation and Method Comparison
April 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: capacity estimation, capacity fade remaining useful life, Energy Storage, second-life battery
There is increased talk about using second-life batteries in applications. In first-life applications, the batteries start from new, and a range of life cycle estimation techniques are applied. However, it is not clear how second-life batteries should be monitored compared to first life batteries. This paper investigated different algorithms from first-life applications for estimating and forecasting battery cell state of health in conjunction with capacity calculations using second life cells under long term durability testing. The paper looks at how close these models predict capacity fade based on a set of second-life batteries that have been undertaking sweat testing over six different applications. The paper concludes that there are two methods that could be suitable candidates for predicting lifespan. One of these needed to be modified from the original.

Subject: Process Design
Keywords: access-to-energy, clean cooking, electric cooking, energy system modelling, energy-X-nexus, Hydrogen, LPG, rural remote communities, sustainable development goal 7
Hydrogen has recently been proposed as a versatile energy carrier to contribute to archiving universal access to clean cooking. In hard-to-reach rural settings, decentralized produced hydrogen may be utilized (i) as a clean fuel via direct combustion in pure gaseous form or blended with Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG), or (ii) via power-to-hydrogen-to-power (P2H2P) to serve electric cooking (e-cooking) appliances. Here, we present the first techno-economic evaluation of hydrogen-based cooking solutions. We apply mathematical optimization via energy system modeling to assess the minimal cost configuration of each respective energy system on technical and economic measures under present and future parameters. We further compare the potential costs of cooking for the end user with the costs of cooking with traditional fuels. Today, P2H2P-based e-cooking and production of hydrogen for utilization via combustion integrated into the electricity supply system have almost equal energy system costs... [more]

Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: buildings, econometrics, economics, Energy Efficiency, energy performance certificates, fsQCA, policies, Portugal
This article presents causal recipes leading to high and low energy consumption efficiency performances using fuzzy set Qualitative Comparative Analysis (fsQCA). The study found that several causal conditions are sufficient for high energy efficiency performance, including several fiscal and financial incentive policies, a highly educated population, many completed dwellings, and low GDP. The study also found that high inequality in completed dwellings and completed reconstructions, coupled with a low GDP and a low number of policies, lead to high energy consumption efficiency performance. In addition, the analysis showed slight differences between the yearly consistencies, suggesting that time effects are not a concern. On the other hand, a low education level, Gini coefficient, few completed dwellings and reconstructions, coupled with a low number of fiscal and financial policies, are the causal conditions leading to low energy consumption efficiency performance. Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: reanalysis weather data, spatiotemporal modeling, wind energy, wind turbines
Temporally and spatially resolved data on wind power generation are very useful for studying the technical and economic aspects of this variable renewable energy at local and regional levels. Due to the lack of disaggregated electricity data from onshore and offshore turbines in Germany, it is necessary to use numerical simulations to calculate the power generation for a given geographic area and time period. This study shows how such a simulation model, which uses freely available plant and weather data as input variables, can be developed with the help of basic atmospheric laws and specific power curves of wind turbines. The wind power model is then applied to ensembles of nearly 28,000 onshore and 1500 offshore turbines to simulate the wind power generation in Germany for the years 2019 and 2020. Subject: Optimization
Keywords: Co3O4, experimental validation, kinetics, numerical model, thermochemical heat storage
Thermochemical heat storage is an important solar-heat-storage technology with a high temperature and high energy density, which has attracted increasing attention and research in recent years. The mono-metallic redox pair Co3O4/CoO realizes heat storage and exothermic process through a reversible redox reaction. Its basic principle is to store energy by heat absorption through a reduction reaction during high-irradiation hours (high temperature) and then release heat through an exothermic-oxidation reaction during low-irradiation hours (low temperature). This paper presents the design of a cobalt-oxide honeycomb structure, which is extruded from pure Co3O4, a porous media with a high heat-storage density and a high conversion rate. Based on the experimental data, a three-dimensional axisymmetric multi-physics numerical model was developed to simulate the flow, heat transfer, mass transfer, and chemical reaction in the thermochemical heat-storage reactor. Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: catalytic pyrolysis, depolymerization, levoglucosan, lignin-first, pulp
Utilization of lignin is among the most pressing problems for biorefineries that convert lignocellulosic biomass to fuels and chemicals. Recently “lignin-first” biomass fractionation has received increasing attention. In most biorefining concepts, carbohydrate portions of the biomass are separated, and their monomeric sugar components released, while the relatively chemically stable lignin rich byproduct remains underutilized. Conversely, in lignin-first processes, a one-pot fractionation and depolymerization is performed, leading to an oil rich in phenolic compounds and a cellulosic pulp. Usually, the pulp is considered as a fermentation feedstock to produce ethanol. Herein, the results of a study where various cellulosic pulps are tested for their potential to produce valuable products via pyrolysis processes, assessed via analytical pyrolysis (py-GC), are presented. Modification of the Aeration-Supplied Configuration in the Biodrying Process for Refuse-Derived Fuel (RDF) Production
April 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: aeration rate, biodrying, mechanical biological treatment, municipal solid waste, RDF
Biodrying is an essential part of the mechanical−biological treatment process that minimizes moisture content and simultaneously maximizes heating value for refuse-derived fuel (RDF) production. Although the mechanical separation process operates effectively in Thailand’s RDF production, high organic content levels and their degradation cause moisture contamination in RDF, producing wet RDF. Aeration is essential for an effective biodrying process, and can reduce RDF’s moisture content as well as increase its heating value. To maximize the biodrying effect, aeration should be optimized based on the waste conditions. This study proposes a modified aeration-supplied configuration for wet RDF biodrying. The aeration rate was modified based on the period within the biodrying operation; the first period is from the beginning until day 2.5, and the second period is from day 2.5 to day 5.
