Keywords: adaptive control, power system stability, renewable energy sources, superconductor fault current limiter, transient stability, virtual synchronous generator.
The growing number of renewable energy plants connected to the power system through static converters have been pushing the development of new strategies to ensure transient stability of these systems. The virtual synchronous generator (VSG) emerged as a way to contribute to the system stabilization by emulating the behavior of traditional synchronous machines in the power converters operation. This paper proposes a modification in the VSG implementation to improve its contribution to the power system transient stability. The proposal is based on the virtualization of the resistive superconducting fault current limiters’ (SFCL) behavior through an adaptive control that performs the VSG armature resistance change in short-circuit situations. A theoretical analysis of the problem is done based on the equal-area criterion, simulation results are obtained using PSCAD, and experimental results are obtained in a Hardware-In-the-Loop (HIL) test bench to corroborate the proposal. Results show... [more]
Numerical and Experimental Investigation on a Moonpool-Buoy Wave Energy Converter
Hengxu Liu, Feng Yan, Fengmei Jing, Jingtao Ao, Zhaoliang Han, Fankai Kong.
April 25, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: moonpool, motion response, wave energy converter, wave tank experiment.
This paper introduces a new point-absorber wave energy converter (WEC) with a moonpool buoy—the moonpool platform wave energy converter (MPWEC). The MPWEC structure includes a cylinder buoy and a moonpool buoy and a Power Take-off (PTO) system, where the relative movement between the cylindrical buoy and the moonpool buoy is exploited by the PTO system to generate energy. A 1:10 scale model was physically tested to validate the numerical model and further prove the feasibility of the proposed system. The motion responses of and the power absorbed by the MPWEC studied in the wave tank experiments were also numerically analyzed, with a potential approach in the frequency domain, and a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code in the time domain. The good agreement between the experimental and the numerical results showed that the present numerical model is accurate enough, and therefore considering only the heave degree of freedom is acceptable to estimate the motion responses and power ab... Subject: Materials
Keywords: AlGaN-GaN HEMT, phonon transport mechanisms, size effect, TDTR, thermal conductivity, thermal interface resistance.
To optimize the thermal design of AlGaN-GaN high-electron-mobility transistors (HEMTs), which incorporate high power densities, an accurate prediction of the underlying thermal transport mechanisms is crucial. Here, a HEMT-structure (Al0.17Ga0.83N, GaN, Al0.32Ga0.68N and AlN on a Si substrate) was investigated using a time-domain thermoreflectance (TDTR) setup. The different scattering contributions were investigated in the framework of phonon transport models (Callaway, Holland and Born-von-Karman). The thermal conductivities of all layers were found to decrease with a temperature between 300 K and 773 K, due to Umklapp scattering. The measurement showed that the AlN and GaN thermal conductivities were a magnitude higher than the thermal conductivity of Al0.32Ga0.68N and Al0.17Ga0.83N due to defect scattering. The layer thicknesses of the HEMT structure are in the length scale of the phonon mean free path, causing a reduction of their intrinsic thermal conductivity. The size-effect of... [more]

Savvas Savvakis, Dimitrios Mertzis, Elias Nassiopoulos, Zissis Samaras.
April 25, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: combustion chamber, compression chamber, Computational Fluid Dynamics, rotary engine, SARM, sealing.
The current paper investigates two particular features of a novel rotary split engine. This internal combustion engine incorporates a number of positive advantages in comparison to conventional reciprocating piston engines. As a split engine, it is characterized by a significant difference between the expansion and compression ratios, the former being higher. The processes are decoupled and take place simultaneously, in different chambers and on the different sides of the rotating pistons. Initially, a brief description of the engine’s structure and operating principle is provided. Next, the configuration of the compression chamber and the sealing system are examined. The numerical study is conducted using CFD simulation models, with the relevant assumptions and boundary conditions. Two parameters of the compression chamber were studied, the intake port design (initial and optimized) and the sealing system size (short and long). The best option was found to be the combination of the op... [more]

Keywords: benefit-to-cost ratio, Energy Efficiency, sensitivity analysis, sugar beet, wheat.
Increased demand for food production, influenced by the constant growth of population, resulted in the agricultural production systems that are more energy and economy intensive. The aim of this study was to evaluate the energetic and economic efficiency of sugar beet and wheat production. Attention was given to the fertilizer usage and its share in energy consumption since it can amount to 50%. Data show that energy input in wheat production was 5.84 MJ·kg−1 and in sugar beet it was 0.93 MJ·kg−1. The highest share of energy input both in wheat and sugar beet was observed for fertilizers, 52.45% and 46.70%, respectively. Economic analysis has shown that wheat production is a low profitable production with a net return of only 20.69 USD·ha−1, in comparison with sugar beet production with a net return of 513.53 USD·ha−1. Costs related to the fertilizer use prevailed in total variable and total production costs. Economic analysis has also shown that the benefit-to-cost ratio was higher in... [more]

April 25, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: geometric optical design, photovoltaic, solar energy, spectral splitting CPV.
In this research, we present a novel design for a large scale spectral splitting concentrator photovoltaic system based on double flat waveguides. The sunlight concentrator consists of a Fresnel lens array and double waveguides. Sunlight is firstly concentrated by Fresnel lenses then reaches an upper flat waveguide (UFW). The dichroic mirror-coated prisms are positioned at each focused area to divide the sunlight spectrum into two bands. The mid-energy (mid E) band is reflected at the prism surface and coupled to the UFW. The GaInP/GaAs dual-junction solar cell is attached at the exit port of the UFW to maximize the electrical conversion efficiency of the mid E band. The low-energy (low E) band is transmitted and reaches a bottom flat waveguide (BFW). The mirror coated prisms are utilized to redirect the mid E band sunlight for coupling with the BFW. The GaInAsP/GaInAs dual-junction solar cell is applied to convert the low E band to electricity. The system was modeled using the commerc... [more]

Keywords: electrical grids failures, geomagnetic storms, solar activity, space weather effects, transmission lines in Poland.
We analyze the solar influence of space weather events on Polish energy infrastructure via geomagnetic disturbances. We consider two time intervals of very different levels of solar activity (SA) in the course of the solar activity cycle 24: 2010—an early rising phase of SA, near the solar minimum and 2014—solar maximum. From the total number of electrical grid failures, we extract almost five thousand failures in 2010 and more than ten thousand in 2014, which could be related to space weather effects. We analyze data of failures having unidentified causes, failures coupled with the aging of transmission network elements and electronic devices, which appeared during the time intervals of enhanced geomagnetic activity. We show that around the times of increasing geomagnetic activity level, the amount of transmission lines failures in the groups mentioned above grows, but mostly with some delay. It might be connected to some cumulative effect due to the result of transient states and the... [more]

April 25, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: demand forecasting, electricity, flexibility, HVAC, office building, Smart Grid.
The built environment has the potential to contribute to maintaining a reliable grid at the demand side by offering flexibility services to a future Smart Grid. In this study, an office building is used to demonstrate forecast-driven building energy flexibility by operating a Battery Electric Storage System (BESS). The objective of this study is, therefore, to stabilize/flatten a building energy demand profile with the operation of a BESS. First, electricity demand forecasting models are developed and assessed for each individual load group of the building based on their characteristics. For each load group, the prediction models show Coefficient of Variation of the Root Mean Square Error (CVRMSE) values below 30%, which indicates that the prediction models are suitable for use in engineering applications. An operational strategy is developed aiming at meeting the flattened electricity load shape objective. Both the simulation and experimental results show that the flattened load shape... [more]

. has received attention from the research and industrial field as a biomass crop because of its fast growth and high productivity. The features of this species match with the increasing demand for wood for energy production. Commonly, the wood used for energy production is converted in chips, a material susceptible to microbial degradation and energy losses if not properly stored before conversion. This study aims at investigating two outdoor storage systems of Eucalyptus wood chips (covered vs. uncovered), assessing the variation in moisture content, dry matter losses and fuel characteristics. The class size of the material was P16, which was obtained using a commercial chipper appositely searched to conduct the study. The results highlighted how the different storage methods were influenced by the climatic condition: the woody biomass covered showed the best performances in terms of dry matter losses achieving 2.7% losses vs. the 8.5% of the uncovered systems. However, fuel characte... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: modified water, oil recovery, rheology, sandstone, sodium sulfate, viscoelasticity.
Oil recovery using modified/smart water technology can be maximized by optimizing the composition of the injected water. Brine optimization is also believed to improve polymer flooding performance. This chapter assesses and defines the potential impact of combining low-salt-modified water with polymer flooding, based on the presence of sulfate in the injection water. Hence, we evaluated the influence of sodium sulfate on (1) polymer viscoelasticity, under the assumption that the phenomena exists, and (2) oil recovery and pressure response. Mainly, a comprehensive rheological evaluation and two-phase core flood experiments are the focus of this work. Composition of injection brine is optimized after having synthetic seawater as a base brine. Core-flood experiments were performed in a secondary, tertiary and a sort of post-tertiary (quaternary) mode to evaluate the feasibility of applying both processes (modified water and polymer flood). Obtained data was subsequently cross-analyzed and... [more]
Wind Turbine Systematic Yaw Error: Operation Data Analysis Techniques for Detecting It and Assessing Its Performance Impact

Keywords: multivariate regression, operation data analysis, performance monitoring, wind energy, wind turbines, yaw system.
The widespread availability of wind turbine operation data has considerably boosted the research and the applications for wind turbine monitoring. It is well established that a systematic misalignment of the wind turbine nacelle with respect to the wind direction has a remarkable impact in terms of down-performance, because the extracted power is in first approximation proportional to the cosine cube of the yaw angle. Nevertheless, due to the fact that in the wind farm practice the wind field facing the rotor is estimated through anemometers placed behind the rotor, it is challenging to robustly detect systematic yaw errors without the use of additional upwind sensory systems. Nevertheless, this objective is valuable because it involves the use of data that are available to wind farm practitioners at zero cost. On these grounds, the present work is a two-steps test case discussion. At first, a new method for systematic yaw error detection through operation data analysis is presented an... [more]
Experimental Validation of Heat Transport Modelling in Large Solar Thermal Plants
Kevin Sartor, Rémi Dickes.
April 25, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: control, Dynamic Modelling, plug flow, solar network.
Solar thermal plants are often considered as a convenient and environmentally friendly way to supply heat to buildings or low temperature industrial processes. Some modelling techniques are required to assess the dynamic behaviour of solar thermal plants in order to control them correctly. This aspect is reinforced while large plants are considered. Indeed, some atmospheric conditions, such as local clouds, could have significant influence on the outlet temperature of the solar field. A common modelling approach to assess the heat transport in pipes is the one-dimensional finite volume method. However, previous work shows limitations in the assessment of the temperatures and in the computational time required for simulating large pipe networks. In this contribution, a previous alternative method developed and validated in a district heating network is used and extended to a solar thermal plant considering the thermal solar gain and the inertia of the pipes. The present contribution int... [more]

Keywords: Energy Storage, groundwater, hydropower, mining, numerical modelling, Renewable and Sustainable Energy.
Underground pumped-storage hydropower (UPSH) is a promising technology to manage the electricity production in flat regions. UPSH plants consist of an underground and surface reservoirs. The energy is stored by pumping water from the underground to the surface reservoir and is produced by discharging water from the surface to the underground reservoir. The underground reservoir can be drilled, but a more efficient alternative, considered here, consists in using an abandoned mine. Given that mines are rarely waterproofed, there are concerns about the consequences (on the efficiency and the environment) of water exchanges between the underground reservoir and the surrounding medium. This work investigates numerically such water exchanges and their consequences. Numerical models are based on a real abandoned mine located in Belgium (Martelange slate mine) that is considered as a potential site to construct an UPSH plant. The model integrates the geometrical complexity of the mine, adopts... [more]

Keywords: autocorrelation function, backup protection, envelope detection, reactive power, squaring and low-pass filtering.
To resolve the protection issues caused by high penetration of distributed energy resources, this paper proposes an efficient protection scheme for microgrids based on the autocorrelation of three-phase current envelopes. The proposed strategy uses a squaring and low-pass filtering approach for evaluating the envelope of the current signal. Then, the variance of the autocorrelation function is used to extract the hidden information of the distorted envelope to detect the fault signatures in the microgrid. Furthermore, the reactive power is used for determining the fault direction. The performance of the proposed protection scheme was verified on a standard medium-voltage microgrid by performing simulations in the MATLAB/Simulink environment (Version: R2017b). The proposed scheme was shown to be easy to implement and have good performance under looped and radial configuration for both grid-connected and islanded operation modes. The simulation results showed that the scheme could not on... [more]
Investigations of Various Market Models in a Deregulated Power Environment Using ACOPF

April 25, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: ACOPF, contingency demand requirement, locational contingency marginal reserve pricing (LCMRP), locational marginal pricing (LMP), wind penetration.
A bi-level electricity market clearing process was developed for energy and reserve allocation in the day-ahead market using AC Optimal Power Flow (ACOPF). An energy-consuming entity (ECE) which does not want its cleared demand to be curtailed, even if any contingency occurs, purchases power from the reserve market at a higher rate. The proposed model helps the ECE to secure a reserve market allocation at the price of the energy market in the real-time market settlement. Various market models were formulated for the evaluation of locational marginal pricing (LMP) in the energy market and locational contingency marginal reserve pricing (LCMRP) in the reserve market. The impact of wind farms on LMP, LCMRP, and negative LMP was analyzed. The increase in demand requirement in the deregulated environment was balanced in the proposed models by the thermal−wind coordination dispatch. The market models were illustrated with the IEEE 30 bus system.
The Key Factors That Determine the Economically Viable, Horizontal Hydrofractured Gas Wells in Mudrocks

Keywords: effective propped volume, fractal, nanopores, optimal well performance, production increase.
We assemble a multiscale physical model of gas production in a mudrock (shale). We then tested our model on 45 horizontal gas wells in the Barnett with 12−15 years on production. When properly used, our model may enable shale companies to gain operational insights into how to complete a particular well in a particular shale. Macrofractures, microfractures, and nanopores form a multiscale system that controls gas flow in mudrocks. Near a horizontal well, hydraulic fracturing creates fractures at many scales and increases permeability of the source rock. We model the physical properties of the fracture network embedded in the Stimulated Reservoir Volume (SRV) with a fractal of dimension D < 2 . This fracture network interacts with the poorly connected nanopores in the organic matrix that are the source of almost all produced gas. In the practically impermeable mudrock, the known volumes of fracturing water and proppant must create an equal volume of fractures at all scales. The... [more]

Keywords: battery management system, capacitor-based equalizers, cell equalization, electric vehicles.
Nowadays, research on electric vehicles is increasing because they have the potential to decrease greenhouse-gas emissions dramatically in the transport sector. For these types of vehicles, the battery is one of the main components. The traction system needs a cell series connection to fulfill the energy requirements. Nevertheless, batteries differ from each other due to a normal dispersion in their capacity, internal resistance, and self-discharge rate. This paper presents a novel battery equalizer circuit using an RC-based topology to equalize two adjacent cells of a battery pack. It has the advantage of merging a resistor-based equalizer, a capacitor-based equalizer, and an RC-based equalizer in one circuit. In this way, it is possible to limit the current stress in the components of the circuit. The proposed method increases the equalization time by 35% for a threshold current of 4 A. However, it is possible design the system for another threshold current. Finally, the complexity o... [more]

Keywords: chemical looping gasification, co-gasification, cyanobacteria, feedstock moisture, interaction effect.
The frequent outbreak of cyanobacteria bloom results in an urgent need for the resource utilization of cyanobacteria. However, the development of routine thermal treatment (i.e., gasification and pyrolysis) is hindered by the issue of high moisture content. In order to minimize the dewatering requirement, this study investigated the chemical looping co-gasification of the cyanobacteria/coal mixture. The results showed that the residual moisture of cyanobacteria not only could serve as the gasifying agent of coal, but also presented a better gasification effect than the injecting steam. Meanwhile, blending cyanobacteria also improved the performance of coal chemical looping gasification in terms of the syngas quality, gasification rate, and carbon conversion efficiency. Cyanobacteria pyrolysis supplied abundant hydrocarbons and hydrogen-rich gases. The highest syngas yield of 1.26 Nm3/kg was obtained in the mixture fuel of 46 wt.% cyanobacteria and 54 wt.% coal under a 0.3 oxygen carrie... [more]
Impact of Long-Term Water Inflow Uncertainty on Wholesale Electricity Prices in Markets with High Shares of Renewable Energies and Storages

April 25, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: electricity price modelling, high shares of renewable energies and storages, linear optimisation model, uncertainty.
Renewable energy shares in electricity markets are increasing and therefore also require an increase in flexibility options. Conventional electricity price modelling with optimisation models in thermally dominated markets is not appropriate in markets with high shares of renewable energies and storages because price structures are not adequately represented. Previous research has already identified the impact of uncertainty in renewable energy feed-in on investment and dispatch decisions. However, we are not aware of any work that investigates the influence of uncertainties on price structures by means of optimisation models. Appropriate modelling of electricity price structures is important for investment and policy decisions. We have investigated the influence of uncertainty concerning water inflow by applying a second stage stochastic dual dynamic programming approach in a linear optimisation model using Norway as an example. We found that the influence of uncertainty concerning wat... [more]

The items targeted for energy-saving operation by this system are the optimal operation of a heat source system, setting of the supply water temperature of heat source equipment, setting of room temperature, and setting of outside-air intake volume. At present, the operations manager has the role of performing these energy-saving operations, but finding the optimal value for each of these operations is a difficult task. Crucial oil reservoirs are located in naturally fractured carbonate formations and are currently reaching a mature phase of production. Hence, a cost-effective enhanced oil recovery (EOR) method is needed to achieve a satisfactory recovery factor. The paper focuses on an experimental investigation of the efficiency of water alternating sour and high-nitrogen (~85% N2) natural gas injection (WAG) in mixed-wetted carbonates that are crucial reservoir rocks for Polish oil fields. The foam-assisted water alternating gas method (FAWAG) was also tested. Both were compared with continuous water injection (CWI) and continuous gas injection (CGI). A series of coreflooding experiments were conducted within reservoir conditions (T = 126 ℃, P = 270 bar) on composite cores, and each consisted of four reservoir dolomite core plugs and was saturated with the original reservoir fluids. In turn, some of the experiments were conducted on artificially fractured cores to evaluate the impact of fractures o... [more]

April 25, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: battery electric buses, deep neural networks, energy consumption, public transport network.
The estimation of energy consumption is an important prerequisite for planning the required infrastructure for charging and optimising the schedules of battery electric buses used in public urban transport. This paper proposes a model using a reduced number of readily acquired bus trip parameters: arrival times at the bus stops, map positions of the bus stops and a parameter indicating the trip conditions. A deep learning network is developed for deriving the estimates of energy consumption stop by stop of bus lines. Deep learning networks belong to the important group of methods capable of the analysis of large datasets—“big data”. This property allows for the scaling of the method and application to different sized transport networks. Validation of the network is done using real-world data provided by bus authorities of the town of Jaworzno in Poland. The estimates of energy consumption are compared with the results obtained using a regression model that is based on the collected dat... [more]

Keywords: chance-constrained optimization, probability of contingency, renewable energy source, security-constrained optimal power flow.
The traditional security-constrained optimal power flow (SCOPF) model under the classical N-1 criterion is implemented in the power industry to ensure the secure operation of a power system. However, with increasing uncertainties from renewable energy sources (RES) and loads, the existing SCOPF model has difficulty meeting the practical requirements of the industry. This paper proposed a novel chance-constrained preventive SCOPF model that considers the uncertainty of power injections, including RES and load, and contingency probability. The chance constraint is used to constrain the overall line flow within the limits with high probabilistic guarantees and to significantly reduce the constraint scales. The cumulant and Johnson systems were combined to accurately approximate the cumulative distribution functions, which is important in solving chance-constrained optimization problems. The simulation results show that the model proposed in this paper can achieve better performance than t... [more]
