April 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: flow characteristics, heat transfer enhancement, micro-pin-fin array, microchannel, non-closed ring-shaped, vortex structure
In this study, flow and heat transfer characteristics in novel non-closed 3/4 ring-shaped micro-pin-fin arrays with in-line and staggered layouts were investigated numerically. The flow distribution, wake structure, vorticity field and pressure drop were examined in detail, and convective heat transfer features were explored. Results show that vortex pairs appeared earlier in the ring-shaped micro-pin-fin array compared with the traditional circular devices. Pressure drop across the microchannel varied with layout of the fins, while little difference in pressure drop was observed between ring-shaped and circular fins of the same layouts, with the maximum difference being 1.43%. The staggered ring-shaped array was found to outperform the in-line array and the circular arrays in convective heat transfer. A maximum increase of 21.34% in heat transfer coefficient was observed in the ring-shaped micro-pin-fin array in comparison with the circular micro-pin-fin array. The overall thermal-hyd... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: energy saving, future trends, literature measurement research, straw building materials, visualization
The need to effectively control and reduce energy consumption in buildings has become a global concern, prompting an increasing number of studies on the energy efficiency of straw buildings. However, previous review articles on straw research have primarily focused on fragmented material properties such as thermal insulation and mechanical strength and have lacked a comprehensive review of straw materials in building energy efficiency, as well as a thorough analysis of the development lineage of straw building materials. To fill this research gap, this study conducted a bibliometric analysis of 338 papers on the energy efficiency of straw materials published in the WOS core database between 1992 and 2022. The study constructed and visualized multifaceted co-occurrence networks representing the research literature on the energy efficiency of straw building materials, providing a comprehensive understanding of current research efforts, development trends, hot research directions, and the... April 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: 3-phase 4-wire PV inverter, power quality improvement, prosumer installation, PV integration, voltage unbalance
This paper concerns the mitigation of voltage disturbances deteriorating power quality and disrupting the operation of LV distribution grids due to the high penetration of PV energy sources in prosumer installations. A novel control strategy for 3-phase 4-wire PV inverters is proposed, which ensures the transmission of PV active power and simultaneous compensation of load unbalance and reactive power, making the prosumer installation balanced and purely active. It results in the balance of phase voltages and the mitigation of their variability. Unlike other methods used for voltage regulation in LV grids, the proposed solution contributes to the reduction in losses, is simple, and does not require additional costs. In the paper, a control algorithm for the PV inverter is described. Its effectiveness was tested by simulation using a model of the real LV distribution grid developed in the PSCAD/EMTDC program. The results of the simulations are presented and evaluated.

Keywords: computational fluid dynamics (CFD), laminar flow, shear-thinning fluids, transitional velocities, turbulent flow
The aim of this research is to investigate the effects of rheological models of shear-thinning fluids and their estimated parameters on the predictions of laminar, transitional, and turbulent flow. The investigation was carried out through experimental and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) studies in horizontal pipes (diameters of 19.1 mm and 76.2 mm). Six turbulent models using Reynolds averaged Navier−Stokes equations in CFD_ANSYS Fluent 19.0 were examined in a 3D simulation followed by comparison studies between numerical and experimental results. Regarding results of laminar regions in power-law rheology models, Metzner and Reed presented the best fit for the pressure loss and transitional velocity. For the turbulent region, correlations observed by Wilson and Thomas as well as Dodge and Matzner had good agreement with the experimental results. For Herschel−Bulkley fluids, pressure losses and transitional regions based on a yielded region were examined and compared to the experime... [more]

Despite significant advances in distributed renewable energy systems (DRES), the technology still faces several substantial challenges that prevent the large-scale adoption of these systems into a country’s energy sector. The intermittency of renewables, uncertainties associated with real-time multi-horizon weather and load forecasts, and lack of comprehensive control systems are among the main technical and regulatory challenges for the real-world adoption of DRES. This paper outlines the current state of knowledge in the real-world operation of DRES and also describes pathways and methodologies that enable and facilitate the uptake of DRES in a country’s energy sector.

Community energy projects have gained popularity in recent years, and encouraging citizens to form local energy communities (LEC) is considered an effective tool for raising awareness about renewable energy. Since no single universal method exists for operating LECs, this study investigated the impact that different business models and asset dispatch methods have on LECs’ economic and energy-related indicators. We carried out a case study, which included the development, modelling, and simulation of seven scenarios using mixed-integer linear programming (MILP). To measure and compare the prospective performance of the LECs in each scenario, six key metrics were evaluated and assessed. The authors find that simple, rule-based control systems might be well suited for LECs with a limited number of controllable assets that aim to provide increased levels of self-consumption of up to 3%. We also conclude that when the LEC utilises an energy cooperative business model, the selected asset dis... [more]

Keywords: dual-loop control, low frequency AC transmission, M3C, mathematical model, SM voltage balance
The modular multilevel matrix converter (M3C) is the core component in low-frequency AC (LFAC) transmission, which is a competitive scheme for offshore wind power integration. In this paper, the M3C control strategy with the reduced switching frequency SM voltage balancing method is proposed. First, based on the conventional αβ0 and dq transformations, the M3C mathematical model is derived. Then, the dual-loop control structure with outer loop and inner loop controllers commonly used in voltage source converters is applied to the M3C. The inner loop controller consists of the current tracking controller in the dq reference frame and the circulating current suppressing controller in the αβ0 reference frame; the outer loop controller is proposed for the offshore wind farm LFAC integration scenario. Additionally, according to the operating characteristics of full-bridge sub-modules (FBSMs), three characteristic variables are defined and a reduced switching frequency SM voltage balancing m... Keywords: carbon capture and storage, integrated energy system, ladder-type carbon trading mechanism, power-to-gas heat recovery, wind power accommodation
Carbon capture and storage (CCS) is an effective means to achieve the goals of carbon peaking and carbon neutrality. To improve the operating economics and low-carbon emission of an integrated energy system, the strong exothermic property of power-to-gas is utilized for heat recovery and injection into the heat network. This expands the adjustable range of electric output of combined heat and power (CHP) units which will improve wind power accommodation. The CO2 produced by the coal-fired unit is captured using post-combustion carbon capture technology, and then stored and used to manufacture methane, in order to realize the electric−gas−heat integrated energy system coupled with power-to-gas. Based on the ladder-type carbon trading mechanism, a low-carbon economic dispatch model of integrated energy system is proposed, which considers the incorporation of power-to-gas heat recovery and carbon capture and storage. The objective function is to minimize the total operation cost of the sy... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: carbon neutrality, carbon sink, CO2 emission allowance price, energy production, growth-based carbon sink, renewable wood
More than 25% of the total energy consumption in Finland has been produced with wood fuels. Since 2012, the share has been greater than that of oil, coal, or natural gas. Internal carbon pricing is used to manage the risks in wood procurement after wood import from Russia ended. Further, the EU announced plans to sell more carbon emission permits to fund the EU’s exit from Russian energy. To manage these challenges, a data-driven internal carbon pricing mechanism (DDICPM) has been developed for wood procurement optimization. Particularly, local changes are considered via available information about growth-based carbon sinks (GBCS). The results of the new scenario were compared to the basic national scenario that ensures carbon neutrality in forestry. The DDICPM may provide the optimum wood-procurement operations maintaining carbon neutrality in the integrated energy and material industry (IEMI). In this study, the use of DDICPM increased profitability b 16.2, 16.1, and 16.0% between ad... [more]

Keywords: financing, licensing, public acceptance, small modular reactor deployment, Supply Chain
To meet climate policy goals, it will be necessary to deploy a series of low-carbon energy technologies, including nuclear power. The small modular reactor (SMR) can potentially support climate change mitigation and energy security issues. Small modular reactors (SMRs) are gaining popularity; however, one crucial debate is whether SMRs can compete economically with conventional nuclear reactors or not. From a commercial point of view, SMRs will be able to provide process heat in various industrial applications, replace older nuclear, natural gas, and coal power facilities, and serve smaller energy markets with less established infrastructure. Realizing these advantages would rely heavily on the near-term quick up-scaling of SMRs; this paper, then, examines and identifies some of the most hindering constraints and barriers for the quick deployment of SMR such as the technology choice, licensing, economy of scale and financing, public acceptance, supply chain, and proliferation. A clear... [more]

Keywords: advanced exergoeconomic analysis, CO2 emission cost, electricity generation cost, geothermal power plant, performance indicators
Binary geothermal power plants (GPPs) are mostly encountered in geothermal fields with medium and low temperatures. The design and operation of dual binary GPPs can be difficult due to the geothermal fluid properties. This affects their performance and feasibility. Thermoeconomics are essential elements for the design and operation of the GPPs. In this study, advanced exergoeconomic analysis is applied to a true dual binary GPP (as a case study) to further evaluate it from performance and economic perspectives. In analysis, the specific exergy cost (SPECO) method is used. Then, some specific indicators are presented to evaluate the performance and economics of the GPP. Thus, technical and economic solutions have been developed in the design and operation stages through the analysis. The results of the study indicated that the total operating cost of 1218 USD/h could be reduced to 186 USD/h by improving the operating conditions. This corresponds to an 85% decrease. The cost per electric... [more]

Keywords: Matlab, solidity of blade, tidal current capture device
In this paper, the blade solidity of the tidal current turbine was investigated. Based on the blade element momentum theory, different design flow velocities were selected to design two blade types with different solidities. The geometric parameters of the blade were calculated using MATLAB programming, and the performance of two blades was compared in terms of the start-up flow rate, power generation and thrust by test experiment, which showed that the blade with higher solidity has better start-up performance and higher energy capture efficiency at low flow rates. The performance is better than that of the blade with low solidity, but due to the high solidity, the thrust is also high, which should be taken into account when installing the turbine.
