Composition of Oil after Hydrothermal Treatment of Cabonate-Siliceous and Carbonate Domanic Shale Rocks
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: composition, Domanic rocks, hydrothermal processes, kerogen, mineral composition, organic matter, transformations
The hydrocarbon compositions of shale oils, generated from two different lithological−facial Domanic deposits of the Tatarstan Republic (Russia), were studied under hydrothermal impact with 30% of water addition in a 350 °С and CO2 environment. The samples were extracted from carbonate−siliceous rocks of the Semiluky−Mendym deposits of the Berezovskaya area, and carbonate deposits of the Dankovo−Lebedyan horizon of the Zelenogorskaya area of the Romashkino oil field. The distinctive features of rocks are in the composition and content of organic matter (OM), its thermal stability, as well as the structural-group composition of the shale oil products. The hydrothermal treatment of the rock samples increased the content of saturates and decreased the content of aromatics, resins and asphaltenes in the composition of crude oil. The decomposition of the polymer-like kerogen structure and destruction processes of high-molecular compounds, such as resins and asphaltenes, are accompanied with... [more]

Influence of Carboxylic Modification Using Polyacrylic Acid on Characteristics of Fe3O4 Nanoparticles with Cluster Structure
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: characteristics, cluster structure, magnetite, microstructure, surface treatment
Fe3O4 nanoparticles with cluster structure are superparamagnetic particles with applicability in various high-tech fields. In this study, the influence of surface modification with polyacrylic acid (PAA), a polymeric precursor, on the characteristics of Fe3O4 nanoparticles was investigated. The particles were synthesized by the polyol method and surface modified with various amounts of PAA. The surficial, structural, optical, and magnetic properties of the PAA-modified Fe3O4 nanoparticles were analyzed, confirming that negatively charged carboxyl groups were formed on the particle surface, and the particle dispersibility was enhanced by surface modification. This arises from an increase in the electrostatic repulsive force due to the surface functional groups. Functionalization promoted dissociation of the cluster particles, which became more pronounced as the PAA content increased. The optical parameters changed with the PAA content. Analysis of the magnetic properties showed that the... [more]

Study on the Polishing Characteristics of the Rotating Cylinder-Based Magnetic Gel Abrasive Finishing
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: gel abrasive, magnetic gel abrasive finishing, rotating cylinder, surface roughness
Magnetic gel abrasive finishing is a high-precision polishing method that uses magnetic forces to attract and restrain a gel abrasive, composed of aqueous slime gel, steel grits, and silicon carbon (SiC), for polishing workpieces. However, the magnetic adsorption performance of the gel abrasive will drop quickly when polishing non-ferromagnetic material such as stainless-steel or brass. Moreover, centrifugal force will push out the gel abrasive from the machining surface reducing the stability of polishing. Therefore, this paper developed a rotating cylinder-based magnetic finishing setup to allow the gel abrasive and workpieces to tumble and rotate together during the polishing process. To make the gel abrasive produce irregular and complicated movement paths for improving the polishing performance, this study first analyzed and compared the average surface roughness and removed material weight of workpieces using three kinds of motor operating modes; a unidirectional trapezoidal wave... Chaotic Analysis and Prediction of Wind Speed Based on Wavelet Decomposition
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: chaotic, Kalman filter, wavelet decomposition, wind speed
Studying the characteristics of wind speed is essential in wind speed prediction. Based on long-term observed wind speed data, fractal dimension analysis of wind speed was first conducted at different scales, and persistence in wind speed was evaluated based on fractal dimensions in this paper. To propose a more accurate model for wind speed prediction, the wavelet decomposition method was applied to separate the high-frequency dynamics of wind speed data from the low-frequency dynamics. Chaotic behaviors were studied for each decomposed component using the largest Lyapunov exponents method. A proposed hybrid prediction method combining wavelet decomposition, a chaotic prediction method and a Kalman filter method was investigated for short-term wind speed prediction. Simulation results showed that the proposed method can significantly improve prediction accuracy.

Interaction between the Standard and the Measurement Instrument during the Flow Velocity Sensor Calibration Process
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Monitoring
Keywords: blockage effect, calibration of the ventilation instruments, flow velocity sensors
The complex ventilation system development process is associated with the stages of modelling, design, execution, and testing. Each of these steps requires the use of measuring equipment that is capable of determining the basic parameters of the flow. In the process of calibrating instruments for measuring flow velocity, one of the limitations is the size of the calibrated devices positioned in the test section of the wind tunnel. This is related to the change in the flow condition within the vicinity of the calibrated anemometers, which is caused by the blockage effect. Instruments with significant dimensions in relation to the cross-sectional area of the wind tunnel test section may have an impact on the reference velocity as indicated by the standard. In such cases, the calibration results may be affected by additional systematic error. This article presents a study of this effect using a real case of a calibration laboratory and commonly used sensors. The influence of different typ... [more]

Distribution of Nanoparticles in a Turbulent Taylor−Couette Flow Considering Particle Coagulation and Breakage
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: breakage, coagulation, nanoparticle-laden flow, particle distribution, Taylor–Couette flow
In this paper, the dynamic evolution of nanoparticles in a turbulent Taylor−Couette flow was studied by means of a numerical simulation. The initial particle size was 200 nm, and the volume concentration was 1 × 10−5. The Reynolds-averaged N−S equation for Taylor−Couette flow was solved numerically using the realizable k-ε model combined with the standard wall function. The numerical result of the velocity distribution is in good agreement with the experimental results. Additionally, the dynamic equation for the particle number distribution function was solved numerically using the Taylor series expansion moment method (TEMOM). The variation characteristics of particle number density, diameter and polydispersity in the flow were analyzed. The results show that particle breakage is obvious in the region with strong vorticity due to the large shear strength, which leads to a significant change in the particle number density, diameter and polydispersity. Furthermore, the effects of the ga... [more]

Enhanced Cell Performance and Improved Catalyst Utilization for a Direct Methanol Fuel Cell with an In-Plane Gradient Loading Catalyst Electrode
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: cell performance, direct methanol fuel cell, gradient loading catalyst, in-plane distribution
Direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs) offer high energy density, simple liquid fuel storage, and the ability to operate at ambient temperature. They may be used in a variety of portable mobile power supplies, small civilian power supplies, and automotive power supplies. However, in the process of electrochemical reaction inside a DMFC, because the reactants and products are distributed unevenly, the in-plane concentration of reactants and reaction rate are different; thus, the current density generated in the active area shows a high degree of non-uniformity. The high local current density can easily lead to the acceleration of DMFC aging. As a result, the operating cost of the DMFC is increased and the service life is shortened, which limits the commercial application of DMFCs. In this work, we develop an in-plane gradient loading catalyst. The loading on both the anode and cathode catalysts was lower near the inlet and higher close to the outlet. February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: computer vision, convolutional neural networks, deep learning, intelligent transportation system, vehicle queue length, YOLO
In the Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) realm, queue length estimation is one of an essential yet a challenging task. Queue lengths are important for determining traffic density in traffic lanes so that possible congestion in any lane can be minimized. Smart roadside sensors such as loop detectors, radars and pneumatic road tubes etc. are promising for such tasks though they have a very high installation and maintenance cost. Large scale deployment of surveillance cameras have shown a great potential in the collection of vehicular data in a flexible way and are also cost effective. Similarly, vision-based sensors can be used independently or if required can also augment the functionality of other roadside sensors to effectively process queue length at prescribed traffic lanes. In this research, a CNN-based approach for estimation of vehicle queue length in an urban traffic scenario using low-resolution traffic videos is proposed. Nonlinear Offset-Free Model Predictive Control based on Dynamic PLS Framework
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: Model Predictive Control, nonlinear system, offset-free control, partial least square
A nonlinear offset-free model predictive control based on a dynamic partial least square (PLS) framework is proposed in this paper. A multi-output multi-input system is projected into latent variable space by a PLS outer model. For each latent variable model, the T−S fuzzy model is used to describe the nonlinear characteristics of the system; while the state-space model is used in T−S fuzzy model consequent parameters to describe the dynamic characteristics. A disturbance model is introduced in the state-space model. For model state variables, a state observer is used to compensate for the mismatch of the model. The case study results for the pH neutralization process show that the MPC controller based on this method can guarantee the tracking performance of the nonlinear system without static error.

Keywords: biopolymer, chitosan, composite films, glycerol, plasticizer, γ-irradiation
Industry-sponsored research has intensified to find suitable substitutes for synthetic polymers. For this purpose, biopolymers are promising materials that are extracted from renewable resources. However, there are areas of concern (biopolymers are mostly brittle in the dry state) that require further research before they are used in advanced applications. To overcome this, plasticizers are often added to biopolymers to enhance their physicochemical properties. In this study, chitosan (CH)-glycerol (GL)-based polymeric films were prepared by a simple drop-casting technique, and the influence of a plasticizer (GL) on the properties of chitosan films was analyzed. Additionally, the as-prepared samples were irradiated with γ-rays (60Co γ rays with a dose of 102 kGy) to study the effect of γ-irradiation on the properties of polymeric composites. To achieve this, different samples were prepared by varying the amount of GL. FT-IR analysis revealed the interruption of hydrogen bonding in chit... [more]

Subject: Process Design
Keywords: industrial motors, ON-OFF method, smoothing, synchronous reluctance motor, topology algorithm
The topology algorithm (TA) can effectively find an optimal solution by changing the material and shape of the design target without the limitation of design variables. In this paper, a genetic topology algorithm (GTA) is proposed for the design optimization of a synchronous reluctance motor (SynRM). By applying the stochastic algorithm (genetic algorithm (GA)) and the deterministic algorithm (ON-OFF method) to the design, the optimal shape can be found quickly and effectively. The GTA, which improves manufacturability by removing the aliasing that occurs in TA, was applied to the design of SynRM to search for the optimal model. After dividing the rotor into a reverse mesh grid, the optimal topology was searched for by GA and ON-OFF methods. Then, mechanical stability was verified through stress analysis, and additional performance improvement was obtained through the skew technique. Subject: Materials
Keywords: breaking force, castor episperm, curve fitting, mechanical property
Products from castor seeds have been widely used in various fields. In order to study the breaking behavior and rupture mechanism of castor seed episperm during coat shelling process, the force-structure property of coating castor seed was investigated by a self-developed texture analyzer with in situ optical microscopic observation. Influences of compression distance, velocity and working temperature were studied. The results showed that castor seed episperm rupture commonly happened from the tail end to the first end. Compression distance effect can change the episperm cracking degree. Under pressing distance 2−3 mm, the episperm easily cracked into two flaps, and the breaking force stabilized at 77 N. Pressing velocity has no significant effect on episperm breaking. Temperature changes the physical property. Keywords: burst pressure, forming pressure, process safety equipment, rupture disc, thickness thinning ratio
Rupture discs, also called bursting discs, are widely used in pressure vessels, pressure equipment, and pressure piping in process industries, such as nuclear power, fire protection, and petrochemical industries. To explore the relationship between the burst pressure of reverse-acting rupture discs and their production, two common manufacturing methods, air pressure moulding and hydraulic moulding, were compared in this study. Reverse-acting rupture discs that complied with the form recommended by API 520-2014 were prepared with four release diameters, and burst pressure tests were carried out. These results showed an obvious negative correlation between the forming pressure of rupture discs and their actual burst pressure for all experimental samples. Further study showed that the main reason for this correlation was a reduction in thickness at the top of the rupture disc caused by large plastic deformation during compression moulding. Application of Ultrasonic Atomization in a Combined Circulation System of Spray Evaporative Cooling and Air Cooling for Electric Machines
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Operations
Keywords: air cooling, airflow friction loss, electric machines, evaporative cooling, spray, ultrasonic atomization
A combined circulation system of spray evaporative cooling and air cooling (CCSSECAC) is a way to enhance the cooling performance of an air-cooled electric machine while maintaining its existing structure. Based on a traditional air-cooled machine, when the discrete evaporative cooling medium particles are scattered into the airflow, they will reach the heat source with the air circulation. The cooling capacity of the cooling system is enhanced simultaneously through the phase transition and convection heat transfer. Ultrasonic atomization is a simple way to produce tiny droplets and a good way to improve the performance of CCSSECAC. To verify the effectiveness of such a system, a principle test model was built and a multi-operational condition experiment was carried out as an exploratory study. The experimental results showed that the new cooling system was feasible for horizontal machines, and the stator coil temperature was significantly reduced compared with the air-cooled mode.
