Potential Use of Lactic Acid Bacteria with Pathogen Inhibitory Capacity as a Biopreservative Agent for Chorizo
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Biosystems
Keywords: cell-free extract, characterization, HPLC, inhibitory substances, protein precipitation
The biopreservation of meat products is of great interest due to the demand for products with low or minimal chemical additives. Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) have been used as protective cultures for many centuries. The objective of this work was to characterize 10 native LAB isolated from meat masses with biopreservative potential for meat products. The isolates were subjected to viability tests with different concentrations of NaCl, nitrite, and nitrate salts, pHs, and temperature conditions. Antibiotic resistance and type of lactic acid isomer were tested. In addition, the isolates were tested against seven pathogens, and inhibitory substances were identified by diffusion in agar wells. Finally, two isolates, Lb. plantarum (SB17) and Lb. sakei (SB3) were tested as protective cultures of chorizo in a model. As a result, the viability at different concentrations of NaCl and nitrate and nitrate salts were obtained. pH and temperature exerted a negative effect on the growth of some of the... [more]

Formation Control of Swarming Vessels Using a Virtual Matrix Approach and ISOT Guidance Algorithm
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: autonomous surface vessel (ASV), formation control, isosceles triangle (ISOT), swarm operation, virtual leader vessel, virtual matrix approach
The formation control for the effective operation of multiple vessels is discussed. First, a virtual matrix approach is proposed to improve the formation robustness and transform performance during swarm operations, which is created based on the virtual leader vessel location, and agents composing the formation follow cells in the matrix to maintain formation. This approach is affected by the virtual leader vessel location. The virtual leader vessel location is defined by two cases: matrix center and geometric center; furthermore, robustness and efficiency comparison simulations are performed. The simulation results show that in most formations, the geometric center is better in terms of efficiency and robustness. Second, the isosceles triangle guidance algorithm is proposed to improve the “go-back behavior” of certain agents during excessive maneuvering. Through a waypoint-following simulation, the algorithm is confirmed to be superior to the line-of-sight guidance algorithm. The swar... [more]

Conjugated Mass Transfer of CO2 Absorption through Concentric Circular Gas−Liquid Membrane Contactors
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: absorption rate, CO2 absorption, concentric circular module, conjugated graetz problem, MEA absorbent, membrane contactor
A new design of gas absorption that winds the permeable membrane onto an inner concentric tube to conduct a concentric circular gas−liquid membrane module has been studied theoretically in the fully developed region. An analytical formulation, referred to as conjugated Graetz problems, is developed to predict the concentration distribution and Sherwood numbers for the absorbent fluid flowing in the shell side and CO2/N2 gas mixture flowing in the tube side under various designs and operating parameters. The analytical solutions to the CO2 absorption efficiency were developed by using a two-dimensional mathematical modeling, and the resultant conjugated partial differential equations were solved analytically using the method of separation variables and eigen-function expansion in terms of power series. The predictions of CO2 absorption rate by using Monoethanolamide (MEA) solution in concentric circular membrane contactors under both concurrent- and countercurrent-flow operations are de... [more]

Olive Sound: A Sustainable Radical Innovation
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Food & Agricultural Processes
Keywords: competitiveness, malaxation, sonication
Olive Sound is the acronym of a Horizon 2020 European Project aimed at the development of a high-flow oil extraction plant, the Sono-Heat-Exchanger, which combines ultrasound and heat exchange in order to break, through a radical innovation model in the oil mill, the historical paradigm that sees as inversely correlated the oil yield and the content of bio-phenols. These compounds are biologically active molecules that transform the product, extra virgin olive oil, from a mere condiment into a functional food. The primary objective of the project, financially supported by the European Union through the “Fast Track to Innovation” program, is the development of a product “ready for the market” (TRL 9) capable of making the involved companies more competitive while increasing the competitiveness of European extra virgin olive oil in the international context.

Demand Forecasting for Multichannel Fashion Retailers by Integrating Clustering and Machine Learning Algorithms
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: clustering, demand forecasting, fashion retailing, Machine Learning, multichannel retailing, multichannel retailing
In today’s rapidly changing and highly competitive industrial environment, a new and emerging business model—fast fashion—has started a revolution in the apparel industry. Due to the lack of historical data, constantly changing fashion trends, and product demand uncertainty, accurate demand forecasting is an important and challenging task in the fashion industry. This study integrates k-means clustering (KM), extreme learning machines (ELMs), and support vector regression (SVR) to construct cluster-based KM-ELM and KM-SVR models for demand forecasting in the fashion industry using empirical demand data of physical and virtual channels of a case company to examine the applicability of proposed forecasting models. The research results showed that both the KM-ELM and KM-SVR models are superior to the simple ELM and SVR models. They have higher prediction accuracy, indicating that the integration of clustering analysis can help improve predictions. In addition, the KM-ELM model produces sa... [more]

How to Tackle Underdeterminacy in Metabolic Flux Analysis? A Tutorial and Critical Review
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: elementary flux modes, flux balance analysis, flux variability analysis, metabolic network, sampling
Metabolic flux analysis is often (not to say almost always) faced with system underdeterminacy. Indeed, the linear algebraic system formed by the steady-state mass balance equations around the intracellular metabolites and the equality constraints related to the measurements of extracellular fluxes do not define a unique solution for the distribution of intracellular fluxes, but instead a set of solutions belonging to a convex polytope. Various methods have been proposed to tackle this underdeterminacy, including flux pathway analysis, flux balance analysis, flux variability analysis and sampling. These approaches are reviewed in this article and a toy example supports the discussion with illustrative numerical results.

DPM Simulations of A-Type FCC Particles’ Fast Fluidization by Use of Structure-Dependent Nonlinear Drag Force
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: back-mixing, discrete particle method, drag model, fluidization, heterogeneous structure, Simulation
Nonlinear drag force has been a research frontier in complex gas-solid systems. The literature has reported that the commonly-used drag correlations often overestimate drag force and, thus, cause unrealistic homogeneous flow structures in gas-solid fluidized beds of fine particles. For solving this problem, the structure-dependent drag model, derived from energy-minimization multi-scale approach, is used in discrete simulations of fluid catalytic cracking particles in a small riser. The gas phase is dealt with by computational fluid dynamics. Particles are considered as a discrete phase and described by Newton’s second law of motion. Gas-particle phases are coupled according to Newton’s third law of motion. Simulations show that use of structure-dependent drag model results in drag reduction, the effect of which is not so apparent as that in simulations of the two fluid model. The particle clustering tendency, however, is more distinct and leads to more heterogeneous flow structures in... [more]

The Tip Clearance Cavitation Mechanism of a High-Speed Centrifugal Pump with a Splitter-Bladed Inducer
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: cavitation, numerical computation, splitter-bladed inducer, tip clearance
For a high-speed centrifugal pump, cavitation occurs easily. To equip a high-performance splitter-bladed inducer upstream of the pump is an effective method to suppress cavitation. In this paper, an external characteristics experiment of the high-speed centrifugal pump with a splitter-bladed inducer is carried out, and the corresponding numerical calculations are completed. The research shows that the results of the numerical calculation are credible. Numerical cavitation calculations under eight different tip clearance conditions are carried out. First, it is found that the tip clearance (TC) has a certain impact on the head of the centrifugal pump. When TC is in a small range, the clearance leakage is small, and the impact on the head of the pump is not so obvious, which can give the pump a higher performance. Second, it is found that TC has a certain influence on the static pressure distribution in the cascade passage of the splitter-bladed inducer. When TC is in a certain range, th... [more]

Effects of Parent Coal Properties on the Pyrolytic Char Chemical Structure: Insights from Micro-Raman Spectroscopy Based on 32 Kinds of Chinese Coals
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: char, chemical structure, coal property, pyrolysis, Raman spectroscopy
The chemical structures of pyrolytic chars prepared from 32 kinds of Chinese coals were investigated with micro-Raman spectroscopy in this study. Both first-order and second-order Raman spectra of the chars were curve-fitted and analyzed. The effects of the parent coal properties, including coal rank, volatile, fixed carbon, and ash content, on the pyrolytic char structures were detailed discussed and the correlations between these coal properties and pyrolytic char chemical structures were set up. Multiple-factor analysis was done to propose a comprehensive coal property index that relates well to the pyrolytic char chemical structure. The results indicate that the aromatization degree is the key distinguishable structure of pyrolytic chars prepared from coals with various rank, and the alkyl C−H and aryl C−H structures have no significant difference. The aromatization degree of pyrolytic char decreases with the increase of coal rank, while it increases with the increase of the fixed... [more]

Optimization of Process Parameters for Friction Materials Using Multi-Criteria Decision Making: A Comparative Analysis
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: friction material, MCDM, Optimization, process parameter, response
Friction materials, mainly made of reinforced composites, should possess excellent physical and tribological properties, such as a higher coefficient of friction, minimum wear, adequate surface hardness, and higher porosity for various automotive brake applications. Attainment of those properties greatly depends on the settings of different input parameters, such as molding pressure, temperature and time, temperature and time of heat treatment/sintering, etc., during the processing of friction materials. In this article, four multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) tools, i.e., technique for order of preference by similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS), evaluation based on distance from average solution (EDAS), VlseKriterijumska Optimizacija I Kompromisno Resenje (VIKOR), and multi-objective optimization on the basis of ratio analysis (MOORA) are applied to identify the optimal parametric combinations for two different friction materials. Subject: Process Design
Keywords: chemical product design, green manufacturing, integrated biorefineries, inverse design techniques, multi-objective optimisation
Over the past decades, awareness of the increase in environmental impact due to industrial development and technological advancement has gradually increased. Green manufacturing is one of the key approaches that begin to address environmental issues. With the current global attention, methodologies to incorporate green manufacturing into the design of green products through the green process route are much needed. However, it is challenging for industries to achieve this, as there is no definite definition of green. This work presents a systematic approach that provides a clear and consistent green manufacturing definition with a measurement method in terms of both product and process. With the consistent green definitions, the developed approach designs a product that satisfies green property and other product performance properties. In addition, the developed approach synthesises the production process that fulfils green manufacturing definitions and financial considerations for the... [more]

Gas to Liquids Techno-Economics of Associated Natural Gas, Bio Gas, and Landfill Gas
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: ASPEN–Python, Fischer–Tropsch, GtL, Monte Carlo simulation, Technoeconomic Analysis
Methane is the second highest contributor to the greenhouse effect. Its global warming potential is 37 times that of CO2. Flaring-associated natural gas from remote oil reservoirs is currently the only economical alternative. Gas-to-liquid (GtL) technologies first convert natural gas into syngas, then it into liquids such as methanol, Fischer−Tropsch fuels or dimethyl ether. However, studies on the influence of feedstock composition are sparse, which also poses technical design challenges. Here, we examine the techno-economic analysis of a micro-refinery unit (MRU) that partially oxidizes methane-rich feedstocks and polymerizes the syngas formed via Fischer−Tropsch reaction. We consider three methane-containing waste gases: natural gas, biogas, and landfill gas. The FT fuel selling price is critical for the economy of the unit. A Monte Carlo simulation assesses the influence of the composition on the final product quantity as well as on the capital and operative expenses. The Aspen Plu... [more]

Synthesis of Ti Powder from the Reduction of TiCl4 with Metal Hydrides in the H2 Atmosphere: Thermodynamic and Techno-Economic Analyses
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: economic evaluation, equilibrium composition diagrams, pilot production, process simulation, stability diagram, titanium hydride
Titanium hydride (TiH2) is one of the basic materials for titanium (Ti) powder metallurgy. A novel method was proposed to produce TiH2 from the reduction of titanium tetrachloride (TiCl4) with magnesium hydride (MgH2) in the hydrogen (H2) atmosphere. The primary approach of this process is to produce TiH2 at a low-temperature range through an efficient and energy-saving process for further titanium powder production. In this study, the thermodynamic assessment and technoeconomic analysis of the process were investigated. The results show that the formation of TiH2 is feasible at low temperatures, and the molar ratio between TiCl4 and metal hydride as a reductant material has a critical role in its formation. Moreover, it was found that the yield of TiH2 is slightly higher when CaH2 is used as a reductant agent. The calculated equilibrium composition diagrams show that when the molar ratio between TiCl4 and metal hydrides is greater than the stoichiometric amount, the TiCl3 phase also f... [more]

Slurry pipe transport has directed the efforts of researchers for decades, not only for the practical impact of this problem, but also for the challenges in understanding and modelling the complex phenomena involved. The increase in computer power and the diffusion of multipurpose codes based on Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) have opened up the opportunity to gather information on slurry pipe flows at the local level, in contrast with the traditional approaches of simplified theoretical modelling which are mainly based on a macroscopic description of the flow. This review paper discusses the potential of CFD for simulating slurry pipe flows. A comprehensive description of the modelling methods will be presented, followed by an overview of significant publications on the topic. However, the main focus will be the assessment of the potential and the challenges of the CFD approach, underlying the essential interplay between CFD simulations and experiments, discussing the main sources... Estimating the Methane Potential of Energy Crops: An Overview on Types of Data Sources and Their Limitations
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: anaerobic digestion, biochemical methane potential, biogas, crop material, energy crops, methane yield
As the anaerobic digestion of energy crops and crop residues becomes more widely applied for bioenergy production, planners and operators of biogas plants, and farmers who consider growing such crops, have a need for information on potential biogas and methane yields. A rich body of literature reports methane yields for a variety of such materials. These data have been obtained with different testing methods. This work elaborates an overview on the types of data source available and the methods that are commonly applied to determine the methane yield of an agricultural biomass, with a focus on European crops. Limitations regarding the transferability and generalisation of data are explored, and crop methane values presented across the literature are compared. Large variations were found for reported values, which can only partially be explained by the methods applied. Most notably, the intra-crop variation of methane yield (reported values for a single crop type) was higher than the in... [more]

Characteristics of the Polishing Effects for the Stainless Tubes in Magnetic Finishing with Gel Abrasive
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: guar gum, magnetic abrasive finishing, magnetic finishing with gel abrasive, silicone gel, stainless tube, surface roughness
Magnetic abrasive finishing (MAF) is a fast, high efficiency and high-precision polishing method on the surface machining of the metals. Furthermore, MAF also can be utilized to polish the stainless tubes in industrial applications; however, stainless tubes are often a non-magnetic material that makes it difficult for the magnetic field line to penetrate into the stainless tubes, thus reducing the magnetic forces in the inner tubes polishing. That is why stainless tubes are not easy to finish using traditional MAF. Therefore, magnetic finishing with gel abrasive (MFGA) applies gels mixed with steel grit and abrasives that were developed to improve the polishing efficiency and surface uniformity of the steel elements. In this study, a guar gum or silicone gel mixed with steel grit and silicon carbides are used as the magnetic abrasive gel to polish the stainless inner tubes. Keywords: Artificial Intelligence, bioprocess modelling, hybrid models, Machine Learning, PHA production
Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) are renewable alternatives to traditional oil-derived polymers. PHA can be produced by different microorganisms in continuous culture under specific media composition, which makes the production process both promising and challenging. In order to achieve large productivities while maintaining high yield and efficiency, the continuous culture needs to be operated in the so-called dual nutrient limitation condition, where both the nitrogen and carbon sources are kept at very low concentrations. Mathematical models can greatly assist both design and operation of the bioprocess, but are challenged by the complexity of the system, in particular by the dual nutrient-limited growth phenomenon, where the cells undergo a metabolic shift that abruptly changes their behavior. Traditional, non-structured mechanistic models based on Monod uptake kinetics can be used to describe the bioreactor operation under specific process conditions. However, in the absence of a model...
