Effect of Two- and Three-Dimensionally Designed Guide Vanes with Different Camber Length on Static Pressure Recovery of a Wall-Mounted Axial Fan

This study was based on a numerical effort to use the motor support (prop) as a guide vane when the motor of a wall-mounted axial fan was located at the fan outlet while maintaining the structural and spatial advantage. The design for the guide vane followed two- and three-dimensional methods. The inlet vane angle, meridional length (total), and meridional length with a vane angle of zero (0) degrees (linear) were considered as design variables. At the design and some low flow rate points, the 2D design offered the most favorable performance when the meridional length with a vane angle of zero (0) degrees (linear) was 30% based on total length, and was the worst for 70%. The 3D design method applied in this study did not outperform the 2D design. This review highlights the importance of agricultural wastes in the production of nanocellulose in order to reduce environmental impact, use of fossil resources, guarantee sustainable economic growth and close the circle of resource use. Finally, the possible applications of the nanocellulose obtained as a new source of raw material in various industrial fields are discussed.

The use of metal oxides as supports for palladium and copper (Pd−Cu) nanoalloys constitutes a new horizon for improving new active catalysts in very important reactions. Electrochemical Reduction of CO2 to CO on Hydrophobic Zn Foam Rod in a Microchannel Electrochemical Reactor

Due to CO2 mass transfer limitation as well as the competition of hydrogen evolution reaction in electroreduction of CO2 in the aqueous electrolyte, Zn-based electrodes normally exhibit unsatisfying selectivity for CO production, especially at high potentials. In this work, we introduced a zinc myristate (Zn [CH3(CH2)12COO]2) hydrophobic layer on the surface of zinc foam electrode by an electrodeposition method. The obtained hydrophobic zinc foam electrode showed a high Faradaic efficiency (FE) of 91.8% for CO at −1.9 V (vs. saturated calomel electrode, SCE), which was a remarkable improvement over zinc foam (FECO = 81.87%) at the same potentials. The high roughness of the hydrophobic layer has greatly increased the active surface area and CO2 mass transfer performance by providing abundant gas-liquid-solid contacting area. This work shows adding a hydrophobic layer on the surface of the catalyst is an effective way to improve the electrochemical CO2 reduction performance.

This paper would like to compare two extraction procedures for analyzing phthalates (PAEs) in hot drinks collected at vending machines, usually coffee and tea. The two analytical procedures are based on Solid Phase Extraction (SPE) using C18 cartridge and on dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction (DLLME) assisted by ultrasound and vortex for improving the dispersion mechanically, with each followed by a routinary analytical method such as GC-FID. Seven phthalates (DMP, DEP, DiBP, DBP, DEHP, DOP, DDP) have been analyzed and determined. All the analytical parameters (i.e., recovery, limit of detection, limit of quantification, enrichment factors, repeatability, reproducibility) have been investigated and discussed, as has the matrix effect. The entire procedure has been applied to hot drink matrices, e.g., coffee, decaffeinated coffee, barley coffee, ginseng coffee and tea.

The Influence of Annealing Atmosphere, Blending Ratio, and Molecular Weight on the Phase Behavior of Blend Materials

In the study of block copolymers, many parameters need to be adjusted to obtain good phase separation results. Based on block copolymer polystyrene-b-polycarbonate and homopolymer polystyrene, the effects of the annealing atmosphere, blending ratio, and molecular weight on phase separation were studied. The results show that annealing in air can inhibit the occurrence of phase separation. In addition, snowflake patterns are formed during phase separation. The blending ratio affects the quality of the pattern. The molecular weight affects the size of the pattern, and the size increases as the molecular weight increases. In this article, the influence of process conditions and materials on phase separation was discussed, which has laid a solid foundation for the development of block copolymer self-assembly in the future.

Vapor pressure deficit (VPD) can be used as an indicator to schedule greenhouse irrigation. VPD can be estimated as a function of relative humidity (RH) and temperature (T). The objective of this work was to analyze spatial variation in VPD as an indicator of water stress influenced by concentration of water vapor and intensity of near infrared (NIR). The study was carried out in an empty three-span sawtooth greenhouse with natural ventilation under the local climate in Montecillo, Mexico; these findings established a base value to analyze greenhouse field conditions prior to the influence from a crop. The processing of large quantities of water in biorefining processes can lead to immense costs for heating, evaporation, and wastewater disposal. These costs may prohibit the exploitation of alternative products, e.g., xylooligosaccharides from straw, which are regarded as too costly. A new counter-current extractions method is proposed that aims at low solvent (water) consumption, as well as high yields and extract concentrations. This process was evaluated with suspension extraction experiments with steam pretreated wheat straw and the process window analysis based on a mass balance for a washing and a leaching scenario. First, a virtual matrix approach is proposed to improve the formation robustness and transform performance during swarm operations, which is created based on the virtual leader vessel location, and agents composing the formation follow cells in the matrix to maintain formation. The virtual leader vessel location is defined by two cases: matrix center and geometric center; furthermore, robustness and efficiency comparison simulations are performed. Olive Sound is the acronym of a Horizon 2020 European Project aimed at the development of a high-flow oil extraction plant, the Sono-Heat-Exchanger, which combines ultrasound and heat exchange in order to break, through a radical innovation model in the oil mill, the historical paradigm that sees as inversely correlated the oil yield and the content of bio-phenols. These compounds are biologically active molecules that transform the product, extra virgin olive oil, from a mere condiment into a functional food. The primary objective of the project, financially supported by the European Union through the “Fast Track to Innovation” program, is the development of a product “ready for the market” (TRL 9) capable of making the involved companies more competitive while increasing the competitiveness of European extra virgin olive oil in the international context.

Metabolic flux analysis is often (not to say almost always) faced with system underdeterminacy. Indeed, the linear algebraic system formed by the steady-state mass balance equations around the intracellular metabolites and the equality constraints related to the measurements of extracellular fluxes do not define a unique solution for the distribution of intracellular fluxes, but instead a set of solutions belonging to a convex polytope. Various methods have been proposed to tackle this underdeterminacy, including flux pathway analysis, flux balance analysis, flux variability analysis and sampling. Nonlinear drag force has been a research frontier in complex gas-solid systems. The literature has reported that the commonly-used drag correlations often overestimate drag force and, thus, cause unrealistic homogeneous flow structures in gas-solid fluidized beds of fine particles. For solving this problem, the structure-dependent drag model, derived from energy-minimization multi-scale approach, is used in discrete simulations of fluid catalytic cracking particles in a small riser. The gas phase is dealt with by computational fluid dynamics. Particles are considered as a discrete phase and described by Newton’s second law of motion. Gas-particle phases are coupled according to Newton’s third law of motion. For a high-speed centrifugal pump, cavitation occurs easily. To equip a high-performance splitter-bladed inducer upstream of the pump is an effective method to suppress cavitation. In this paper, an external characteristics experiment of the high-speed centrifugal pump with a splitter-bladed inducer is carried out, and the corresponding numerical calculations are completed. The research shows that the results of the numerical calculation are credible. Numerical cavitation calculations under eight different tip clearance conditions are carried out. First, it is found that the tip clearance (TC) has a certain impact on the head of the centrifugal pump. When TC is in a small range, the clearance leakage is small, and the impact on the head of the pump is not so obvious, which can give the pump a higher performance. Effects of Parent Coal Properties on the Pyrolytic Char Chemical Structure: Insights from Micro-Raman Spectroscopy Based on 32 Kinds of Chinese Coals

The chemical structures of pyrolytic chars prepared from 32 kinds of Chinese coals were investigated with micro-Raman spectroscopy in this study. Both first-order and second-order Raman spectra of the chars were curve-fitted and analyzed. The effects of the parent coal properties, including coal rank, volatile, fixed carbon, and ash content, on the pyrolytic char structures were detailed discussed and the correlations between these coal properties and pyrolytic char chemical structures were set up. The paper discusses issues related to the sectors of biofuels for transport. Development directions of those sectors and factors limiting the growth rate thereof are analysed. Safety Study on Wax Deposition in Crude Oil Pipeline

The Shunbei crude oil pipeline is prepared to use the unheated transportation process to transport waxy crudes. However, the wax formation in the pipeline is unknown. In order to predict the wax deposition of the pipeline, the physical property experiment of Shunbei crude oil was carried out through field sampling. The density, freezing point, hydrocarbon composition, and viscosity−temperature characteristics of crude oil are obtained. The cloud point and wax precipitation characteristics of the crude oil were obtained using the differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) thermal analysis method. Then, the wax deposition rate of the pipeline was predicted by two methods: OLGA software and wax deposition kinetic model. Compounds 2,4,6-trichloroanisole (TCA), 2,3,4,6-tetrachloroanisole (TeCA), 2,4,6-tribromoanisole (TBA) and pentachloroanisole (PCA), 2-methylisoborneol (2MIB) and geosmin (GSM) have been reported as being responsible for cork and wine taint. A sustainable method based on thermal desorption-gas chromatography−mass spectrometry (TD-GC/MS) has been developed and optimized, taking into account desorption parameters and chromatographic and mass spectrometric conditions. The combination of parameters that jointly maximized the compound detection was as follows: desorption temperature at 300 °C, desorption time at 30 min, cryo-temperature at 20 °C and trap high temperature at 305 °C. The proposed methodology showed a good linearity (R ≤ 0.994) within the tested range (from 0.1 to 2 ng) for all target compounds. Friction materials, mainly made of reinforced composites, should possess excellent physical and tribological properties, such as a higher coefficient of friction, minimum wear, adequate surface hardness, and higher porosity for various automotive brake applications. Attainment of those properties greatly depends on the settings of different input parameters, such as molding pressure, temperature and time, temperature and time of heat treatment/sintering, etc., during the processing of friction materials.
