February 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: angle of attack, double-suction centrifugal pump, internal flow, pressure pulsation, rotating stall
In order to clearly show the influence on the rotating stall of the impeller of a double-suction centrifugal pump, this paper, using the numerical simulation method of Shear Stress Transform (SST), analyzes the effects of different inlet angles of the blade on hydraulic performance, internal flow field and pressure pulsation in the impeller. The results show that the small angle of attack of the blade inlet scheme can effectively suppress the impeller rotation stall and that the design point head and efficiency are increased by 6.4% and 5.7% respectively. This paper, using turbulence intensity to determine the generation of rotating stall, proposed that the average of turbulence intensity exceeding 2% is a necessary condition for the generation of rotating stall and discovered that the standard deviation of the big angle of attack of the scheme is always greater than that of the small angle being analyzed by the impeller pressure pulsation. The basic critical frequencies of blade inlet... [more]

Robert Hanus, Marcin Zych, Anna Golijanek-Jędrzejczyk
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: cross-spectral density function, gamma-ray absorption method, stochastic signals, two-phase flows
This paper concerns the application of the gamma radiation absorption method in the measurements of dispersed phase velocity in two-phase flows: liquid−gas flow in a horizontal pipeline and liquid−solid particles in a vertical pipe. Radiometric sets containing two linear 241Am gamma radiation sources and two NaI(Tl) scintillation detectors were used in the research. Due to the stochastic nature of the signals obtained from the scintillation probes, statistical methods were used for their analysis. The linear average velocity of the dispersed phase transportation was calculated using the phase of the cross-spectral density function of the signals registered by the scintillation detectors. It is shown that in the presented cases, the phase method can be more accurate than the most commonly used classical cross-correlation one.

February 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: fully premixed combustion, heat transfer characteristics, numerical simulation, porous media, thermal efficiency
The cauldron stoves used in restaurants and canteens usually adopt the combustion mode of blast diffusion. Low combustion efficiency leads to low thermal efficiency and high CO and NOx emissions. To address these problems, a 52 kW fully premixed stove with porous media is designed, and the heat transfer characteristics of the stove are analyzed by theoretical analysis and numerical simulation. The results show that under the rated power, the thermal efficiency of the stove reaches 68.55%, which is more than twice the thermal efficiency of the traditional blast diffusion stove. Among them, the radiant heat efficiency of the stove reaches 47.16%; thus, radiation heat transfer has become an important way of heat transfer of the porous media stove. Moreover, increasing the diameter and emissivity of porous media will increase the radiant thermal efficiency of the stove, but it will significantly reduce the flame temperature. In addition, the influence of the diameter is greater than the em... [more]

February 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: ASD tug, azimuth stern drive, bow tug assistance, Energy Efficiency, FMBS studies, full mission ship simulator, harbour manoeuvring, towing effectiveness
The purpose of this article is to present a methodical approach to increasing the efficiency of a tug with an azimuth stern drive (ASD). The difficulties in the bow-to-bow (as a reverse tractor) operations of an azimuth stern-drive tug, while pulling at the assisted (towed) ship’s bow, are investigated through a parametric study. The authors’ original generic analytical model of a tug in a steady state is utilised. Various design and operation options are also compared, which cover the escort speed, hawser angle, and relative location of the towing point, among others. The latter also means a shift to stern-to-bow operation. The thruster power required and the remaining surplus for executing new alignment (steering) orders are assessed. The study is, thus, aimed at energy savings for the whole operation and, consequently, at long-term harbour-tug-fleet energy effectiveness. The basic output of the present research is the comparison of the behavioural and control patterns of various tug... [more]

Keywords: coal seam, longwall face, rock pack, selective mining, stress concentration, support loading, undercut rocks
Backfilling technology is not always used by mining enterprises, which is conditioned by technological and economic factors, such as the need for high mining rates and costs for the technological processes of transporting backfill materials from the daylight surface to the mined-out space. This concerns the underground mining of hard coal, which is a strategic energy resource, in the mines of Ukraine. This paper aims to study the effect of leaving the waste bottom rocks in the mined-out space of the longwall face without their drawing to the earth’s surface on the geomechanical state of the rocks surrounding the longwall face. The geomechanical assessment of the stress state of the rock mass surrounding the longwall face, when leaving the waste rocks from the seam bottom rocks in the mined-out space, is performed by the finite element method using the Ansys software package. A geomechanical model has been developed and substantiated, which adequately reflects the mining-geological cond... [more]

Climate change and the major threat it poses to the environment and human lives is the major challenge the world faces today. To overcome this challenge, it is recommended that future automobiles have zero carbon exhaust emissions. Even though battery electric vehicles reduce carbon emissions relative to combustion engines, a carbon footprint still remains in the overall ecosystem unless the battery is powered by renewable energy sources. The proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) is an alternate source for automotive mobility which, similar to battery electric vehicles, has zero carbon emissions from its exhaust pipe. Moreover, the typical system level efficiency of a PEMFC is higher than an equivalent internal combustion powertrain. This review article covers the background history, working principles, challenges and applications of PEMFCs for automotive transportation and power generation in industries. Since the performance of a PEMFC is greatly influenced by the design of the... [more]

Keywords: backup, battery energy storage, microgrid, power outages, power quality
The reliability of energy supply is an important factor for end-users of electricity. Although many advances and efforts have been made by distribution companies to guarantee energy quality, weak feeders and grids are still usually found. As an alternative to minimize such problems, Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESSs) can be used to supply energy to users in the case of power outages or major energy quality problems. This paper presents test results on a real application scenario in a microgrid with different load configurations in the moment of interruption. The tests were compared to each other to analyze the impact found in each scenario. In addition to those, real unpremeditated cases of power quality problems were also discussed, and the performance of the utilized BESS was evaluated.

Keywords: constant power, digital twin, energy systems, fluctuation cut, PV, thermal energy storage, Virtual Power Plant
The extensive penetration in the energy mix of variable renewable energy sources, such as wind and solar, guarantees boosting of the transition toward a decarbonized and sustainable energy system as well as tackling of climate targets. However, the instability and unpredictability of such sources predominantly affect their plant production. Thus, utility-scale energy storage is required to aid in balancing supply and demand and, as a result, to prevent unbalances that might cause issues at different grid levels. In the present study, the authors’ patented energy storage technology, known as Integrated Energy Storage System (I-ESS), is combined with a 10 MWp solar plant. The PV plant and the I-ESS unit function as a Virtual Power Plant (VPP). The selected VPP management strategy attempts to optimize the daily hours during which the plant supplies steady power output. Numerical simulations show that the VPP plant can effectively smooth the PV peak and manage the power supply. In particul... [more]

February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: computational complexity, contiguity constraints, energy system optimization, spatial aggregation, technological aggregation, time series clustering
Energy system models that consider variable renewable energy sources (VRESs) are computationally complex. The greater spatial scope and level of detail entailed in the models exacerbates complexity. As a complexity-reduction approach, this paper considers the simultaneous spatial and technological aggregation of energy system models. To that end, a novel two-step aggregation scheme is introduced. First, model regions are spatially aggregated to obtain a reduced region set. The aggregation is based on model parameters such as VRES time series, capacities, etc. In addition, spatial contiguity of regions is considered. Next, technological aggregation is performed on each VRES, in each region, based on their time series. The aggregations’ impact on accuracy and complexity of a cost-optimal, European energy system model is analyzed. The model is aggregated to obtain different combinations of numbers of regions and VRES types. Results are benchmarked against an initial resolution of 96 regio... [more]

Lithium-ion batteries have evolved and transcended in recent years to power every device across the spectrum, from watches to electrical vehicles and beyond. However, the lithium-ion battery requires the use of heavy and expensive transition metal oxides that have limited life cycles. Conductive polymer nanocomposites have been shown to possess good electrochemical and thermomechanical properties and are considered to be effective alternatives to transition metal oxides. The fabrication and properties of polyimide matrix-single wall carbon nanotube, SWCNT composite electrode materials, modified by the electrodeposition of polypyrrole, PPy was successfully carried out. The doping of PPy with p-Toluene sulfonic acid, T resulted in a dramatic transformation of the morphology and specific capacitance of the electrode material. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, EIS, cyclic voltammetry, CV, and galvanic charge−discharge tests were used to measure the electrode’s specific capacitance an... [more]

Keywords: building energy consumption, Energy Efficiency, energy prediction, Machine Learning
Building energy efficiency is vital, due to the substantial amount of energy consumed in buildings and the associated adverse effects. A high-accuracy energy prediction model is considered as one of the most effective ways to understand building energy efficiency. In several studies, various machine learning models have been proposed for the prediction of building energy efficiency. However, the existing models are based on classical machine learning approaches and small datasets. Using a small dataset and inefficient models may lead to poor generalization. In addition, it is not common to see studies examining the suitability of machine learning methods for forecasting the energy consumption of buildings during the early design phase so that more energy-efficient buildings can be constructed. Hence, for these purposes, we propose a multilayer extreme learning machine (MLELM) for the prediction of annual building energy consumption. Our MLELM fuses stacks of autoencoders (AEs) with an... Keywords: CVAE-GAN, data imbalance, fault diagnosis, iron core looseness, saturable reactor, UHVDC thyristor valve, variable operating conditions
The imbalance of data samples and fluctuating operating conditions are the two main challenges faced by vibration data-driven fault diagnosis for the iron core looseness of saturable reactors in UHVDC thyristor valves. This paper proposes a vibration data-driven saturable reactor iron core looseness fault diagnosis strategy named CVG-MFICNN based on CVAE-GAN and MFICNN to overcome the two challenges. This strategy uses a novel 1-D CVAE-GAN model to produce generated samples and expand the training set based on imbalanced training samples. An MFICNN model structure is designed to allow the simultaneous processing of multimodal features such as the SST time-frequency spectrum, time-domain vibration sequence, frequency-domain power spectrum sequence, and time-domain statistics. Using these multimodal features and the MFICNN model, the hidden fault information in vibration data can be effectively mined. An experiment is conducted to collect vibration data of saturable reactors with differe... [more]

Keywords: high-frequency resonance, saturable inductors, spike suppression, ZVS h-bridge phase-shifted converter
A zero-voltage switching (ZVS) H-bridge phase-shifted low-voltage high-current converter with saturable inductors is proposed in this paper. The introduction of saturable inductors solves the short circuit problem caused by high-frequency on−off of the power tube, and effectively inhibits high-frequency voltage oscillation and voltage spikes of the rectifier tube. In addition, when the current flowing through the saturable inductor does not change rapidly, it exhibits a low impedance and consumes very little power. The detailed design process of main parameters in the converter is presented to provide design reference for power supply workers. To verify the effectiveness of design, a 3 kW(15 V/200 A) prototype converter is built. This low-voltage high-current prototype has around 90% efficiency, and can suppress high-frequency voltage oscillation and voltage spikes, avoiding the short circuit problem of power tube, all of which are verified by experimentation.

Keywords: charge storage mechanism, electric double-layer capacitors, kinetic property, molecular dynamics simulation, solvent polarity
Solvents have been considered to show a profound influence on the charge storage of electric double-layer capacitors (EDLCs). However, the corresponding mechanisms remain elusive and controversial. In this work, the influences of solvent dipole moment on the EDL structures, kinetic properties, and charging mechanisms of graphene-based EDLCs are investigated with atomistic simulations. Specifically, electrolyte structuring is conspicuously modulated by solvents, where a sharp increment of capacitance (~325.6%) and kinetics (~10-fold) is documented upon the slight descent of polarity by ~33.0%. Unusually, such an impressive enhancement is primarily attributed to the suppressed interfacial electric fields stimulated by strong-polarity solvents in the proximity of electrodes, which goes beyond the previously observed issues that stemmed from the competitive interplays between ions and solvents. Moreover, a distinctive polarity-dependent charging mechanism (i.e., from pure counterion adsorp... [more]

Keywords: bidirectional DC/DC power conversion, design space analysis, dual active bridge, more electric aircraft
In the literature, different DC/DC power electronic converters (PECs) have been found to interconnect high-voltage DC and low-voltage DC grids in the electric power distribution networks of aircraft. In this scenario, the dual-active-bridge (DAB) converter has been shown to be one of the most promising topologies. The main disadvantages of this PEC are the large output capacitance required to satisfy more electric aircraft (MEA) requirements and the high conduction losses produced in low-voltage power devices of (LV). Therefore, this paper proposes analytical models to determine the voltage ripple and root-mean-square (RMS) current in DC bus capacitors of DABs considering different modulation strategies. Moreover, an analysis of the design space in an MEA case study is performed to evaluate the influence of the design variables in power losses of power devices and peak-to-peak voltage ripple in DC bus capacitors.
