Gas Sources, Migration, and Accumulation Systems: The Shallow Subsurface and Near-Seafloor Gas Hydrate Deposits

Compared with the deeply buried marine gas hydrate deposits, gas hydrates in the shallow subsurface, close to and at the seafloor, have attracted more attention owing to their concentrated distribution, high saturation, and easy access. They accumulate at relatively shallow depths <100−120 m and occur as gas hydrate-bearing mounds (also known as hydrate outcrops, pingoes) at the seafloor derived from the growth of hydrates in the shallow subsurface or as pure hydrate chunks formed by gas leakage. This paper reviews and summarizes such gas hydrate systems globally from the perspective of gas sources, migration pathways, and accumulation processes. Based on the detailed analysis of sedimentology, diagenesis, and petrophysics, this study characterized the Middle-Lower Jurassic Callovian-Oxfordian carbonate reservoirs of 68 key wells in the Amu Darya Basin and assessed the controlling factors on the quality of the target intervals. We identified 15 types of sedimentary facies developed in seven sedimentary environments using sedimentary facies analysis, such as evaporative platform, restricted platform, open platform, platform margin, platform fore-edge upslope, platform fore-edge downslope, and basin facies. Development and Properties of a Similar Material to Coal

In the mining process, protective-seam mining is one of the most effective measures to prevent and control coal and gas outburst accidents across the world. To accurately obtain the fracture development characteristics for protected coal in a similar physical simulation (to two-dimensional (2D) protective-seam mining), a novel and similar material to coal was developed. The similar material was prepared by mixing pulverized coal with a certain particle-size distribution and a water solution of sodium humate, which were separately taken as the aggregate and binder, followed by pressing and drying. Fusion of Vermicompost and Sewage Sludge as Dark Fermentative Biocatalyst for Biohydrogen Production: A Kinetic Study

The present study explores the synergy between vermicompost and the anaerobic sewage sludge as inoculum for biohydrogen production using food waste as a substrate. Experiments were designed and performed in two phases of operation. In the first phase, the vermicompost (VC) was used as inoculum and food waste as substrate at three different organic loading rates of 10 gVS/L (VC1), 20 gVS/L (VC2), and 30 gVS/L (VC3). In the second phase of operation, the inoculums were combined with a proportion of 50% (VC+AS). The study showed an effective biohydrogen production of 20 gVS/L when the mixing ratio of vermicompost and anaerobic sludge was 50:50. The results inferred that effective synergy was observed between the combined consortia of the inoculum, which induces a more effective metabolic pathway for enhanced hydrogen production. Change of Fossil-Fuel-Related Carbon Productivity Index of the Main Manufacturing Sectors in Poland

The article presents the global characteristics of the Polish manufacturing industry and the structure of its energy consumption and carbon dioxide emissions related to direct emission as a result of fuel combustion and indirect emission as a result of electricity consumption. The share of individual sectors in energy consumption and emission levels was determined, and the changes in this share over the last 20 years were determined. A method for determining the carbon productivity index for the emissions of individual industries with the use of global macroeconomic indicators was proposed. The index allows for the comparison of the productivity of individual industries, regardless of the nature of production. The change in carbon productivity in Polish industry over time was presented. On this basis, it was assessed which industries are particularly promising in terms of decarbonising the Polish industry.

Numerical Investigation of Tip Leakage Vortex Cavitating Flow in a Waterjet Pump with Emphasis on Flow Characteristics and Energy Features

The Delayed Detached Eddy Simulation (DDES) turbulence model was coupled with a homogeneous cavitation model to analyze the tip-leakage vortex (TLV) cavitating-flow characteristics in a waterjet pump. The numerical results agree well with experimental data. The results show that the vortex evolution in the waterjet pump has three stages, which is similar to that around a hydrofoil, but the vorticity variations in the waterjet pump are more complicated. The relative-vorticity-transport equation was then applied to find the reason for the differences between the vorticity variation observed in the waterjet pump and that around a hydrofoil. The results indicate that the drastic fusion process of the TSV cavity and the TLV cavity in the waterjet pump resulted in the formation of triangular cavitation region near the blade tip that is difficult to reproduce by stationary hydrofoil simulation. Bioadsorbent, obtained as a result of the processing of bio-waste, has recently gained popularity as a material that adsorbs greenhouse gases, mainly carbon dioxide. Bio-waste, mainly residues from food industry operations, is a waste to be landfilled or composted and can be a potential substrate for bioadsorbent production. Bioadsorbents used for carbon capture must, above all, have low production costs and high adsorption efficiency. This review covers popular bioadsorbents that have been tested for their ability to adsorb carbon dioxide. The paper compares bioadsorbent production methods, physicochemical properties, adsorption isotherms, surfaces, and their porosity. There is a lack of data in the literature on the topic of carbon dioxide adsorption on large-scale plants in the target environment. In this study, experimental quantification of drainage potential curves for unspiked and spiked Exxsol D60 was performed and compared against simplified numerical model results. This potential relates to the flow rate of tapped water from the bottom of the pipe to the water cut of the tapped stream. To mimic the separation characteristics of a real crude-water mixture, Exxsol D60 was spiked with small amounts of crude oil. A pipe separator with two parallel branches and one tapping point was used to measure drainage potential experimentally. The Smarter Together project implemented in the three lighthouse cities (LHCs) of Lyon, Munich, and Vienna a set of co-created and integrated smart solutions for a better life in urban districts. Assessment of Energy Efficiency Measures in Food Cold Supply Chains: A Dairy Industry Case Study

The quality of human nutrition has acquired significant improvements thanks to the opportunity to store food in suitable temperature conditions. Refrigeration has allowed the slowing of chemical and biological degradation and hence the waste of foodstuff, but at the same time increases energy consumption. These effects impact the environment and the sustainability performance of the cold chain, and drive consumers’ choices. The stakeholders of the chain are, therefore, constantly looking for improvement actions to reduce environmental impacts. This paper aims to provide a methodology for prioritizing and assessing the energy efficiency measures for cold chains in terms of quality losses and specific energy consumption, distinguishing between technological, maintenance, and managerial opportunities. Increase Butanol Production from Corn Straw by Mineral Compounds Supplementation

In this study, two types of fermentation methods: SSF and consolidation SHF/SSF were used for production of acetone-butanol-ethanol (ABE) from corn straw as a feedstock. Clostridium acetobutylicum DSM1731 was used as the fermenting organism. Corn straw was thermochemically pretreated and then hydrolyzed using three types of enzymes. The impact has been investigated on the effect of mineral compounds supplementation ((NH4)2SO4, MgSO4, (NH4)3PO4) on ABE productivity and butanol content. From the SSF, where mineral salts were supplemented into the fermentation medium, it was found that the maximum ABE and butanol concentrations were 28.35 g/L and 24.03 g/L, respectively, corresponding to a productivities of 0.295 g/L/h (ABE) and 0.250 g/L/h (butanol).
