Keywords: anaerobic digestion (AD), ash chemistry, bio-coal, biogas (BMP), blending, combustion, digestate, hydrothermal carbonisation (HTC), lignocellulosic biomass, process water.
Hydrothermal carbonisation (HTC) can be integrated with anaerobic digestion (AD) for the treatment of digestate, resulting in a solid hydrochar or bio-coal and a process water, which can be recirculated back into AD to produce biogas. The properties of digestate-derived hydrochars do not lend themselves to producing high quality bio-coal and blending with lignocellulosic feedstocks can improve its properties. This study investigates the co-processing of sewage sludge (SS) digestate with three lignocellulosic biomass (grass, privet hedge, and woodchip). The calorific value of the resulting bio-coal is increased following co-processing, although feedstock interactions result in non-additive behaviour. The largest increase in calorific value was observed for co-processing with woodchip. There is evidence for non-additive partitioning of metals during co-processing resulting in only moderate improvements in ash chemistry during combustion. Co-processing also effects the composition of proc... [more]

March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: ALAMOS, graphical user interface, lattice transport computer codes, Silène.
This article presents an overview of the graphical user interfaces (GUIs) developed at CEA/SERMA (Service d’Études des Réacteurs et de Mathématiques Appliquées) in Saclay, France, which have been used for over forty years by engineers and scientists to build geometries and meshes for general-purpose lattice transport calculations (neutrons and photons). Several applications make use of these calculations, from fuel assembly to full core design, criticality and safety, needing consistency check of the geometry and input properties before starting any lattice calculation. The software pattern design of the GUIs is briefly discussed, showing also the rationale behind the two interfaces for the construction of the geometries for simple fuel assemblies and complex motifs including the reflector (colorsets). The new GUI, ALAMOS, specifically developed for APOLLO3® with a Python Application Programming Interface (API), is here presented as the successor of Silène, which was the first GUI rele... [more]

Keywords: curtailed energy, Energy Storage, flexibility, hydrogen storage, renewable energy sources, underground salt cavern.
Hydrogen is becoming an increasingly important energy carrier in sector integration for fuel cell transportation, heat and electricity. Underground salt caverns are one of the most promising ways to store the hydrogen obtained from water electrolysis using power generation from renewable energy sources (RES). At the same time, the production of hydrogen can be used to avoid energy curtailments during times of low electricity demand or low prices. The stored hydrogen can also be used during times of high energy demand for power generation, e.g., with fuel cells, to cover the fluctuations and shortages caused by low RES generation. This article presents an overview of the techniques that were used and proposed for using excess energy from RES for hydrogen production from water and its storage techniques, especially in underground salt caverns, for the aforementioned purpose, and its feasibility. This paper compares and summarizes the competing technologies based on the current state-of-t... [more]

March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Bayesian statistics, hydropower, intermediate storage retention, second-order dependence structure, stochastic simulation, water management.
Hydropower is the most widely used renewable power source worldwide. The current work presents a methodological tool to determine the hydropower potential of a reservoir based on available hydrological information. A Bayesian analysis of the river flow process and of the reservoir water volume is applied, and the estimated probability density function parameters are integrated for a stochastic analysis and long-term simulation of the river flow process, which is then used as input for the water balance in the reservoir, and thus, for the estimation of the hydropower energy potential. The stochastic approach is employed in terms of the Monte Carlo ensemble technique in order to additionally account for the effect of the intermediate storage retention due to the thresholds of the reservoir. A synthetic river flow timeseries is simulated by preserving the marginal probability distribution function properties of the observed timeseries and also by explicitly preserving the second-order dep... Keywords: 3D geomechanical model, caprock, finite element method, Smeaheia, tensile failure.
Injection-induced rock mechanical failure risks are critical in CO2 sequestration, and thus there is a need to evaluate these occurrences to ensure safe and reliable subsurface storage. A stress−strain-based numerical simulation can reveal the potential mechanical risks of any CO2 sites. This study investigated the hydromechanical effect on geomechanical failure due to injection-induced stress and pore pressure changes in the prospective CO2 storage site Smeaheia, offshore Norway. An inverted-seismic-property-driven 3D field-scale geomechanical model was carried out in the Smeaheia area to evaluate the rock failure and deformation risks in various pressure-build-up scenarios. A one-way coupling between the before- and after-injection pressure scenarios of nine different models has been iterated using the finite element method. The effect of the sensitivity of total pore volume and pore compressibility on rock mechanical deformation is also evaluated. Although various models illustrated... [more]

March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Fault Detection, linear matrix inequalities (LMIs), robust fault reconstruction, sliding mode observer.
In this paper, a generalized sliding mode observer design method is proposed for the robust reconstruction of sensors and actuators faults in the presence of both unknown disturbances and uncertainties. For this purpose, the effect of uncertainty and disturbance on the system has been considered in generalized state-space form, and the LMI tool is combined with the concept of an equivalent output error injection method to reduce the effects of them on the reconstruction process. The upper bound of the disturbance and uncertainty are minimized in the design of the sliding motion so that the reconstruction of the faults will be minimized. The design method is applied for actuator faults in the generalized state-space form, and then with some suitable filtering, the method extends as sensors and actuators coincidentally faults. Since in the proposed approach, the state trajectories do not leave the sliding manifold even in simultaneous sensors and actuators faults, then the faults are rec... [more]

Keywords: BES, bioelectricity, concentration, conductivity, MFC, Modelling.
Bioelectrochemical systems have been the focus of extensive research due to their unique advantages of converting the chemical energy stored in waste to electricity. To acquire a better understanding and optimize these systems, modelling has been employed. A 2D microbial fuel cell (MFC) model was developed using the finite element software Comsol Multiphysics® (version 5.2), simulating a two-chamber MFC operating in batch mode. By solving mass and charge balance equations along with Monod−Butler−Volmer kinetics, the operation of the MFC was simulated. The model accurately describes voltage output and substrate consumption in the MFC. The computational results were compared with experimental data, thus validating the model. The voltage output and substrate consumption originating from the model were in agreement with the experimental data for two different cases (100 Ω, 1000 Ω external resistances). A polarization curve was extracted from the model by shifting the external resistance gr... [more]

Keywords: Ca-TiO2, perovskite solar cells, photovoltaics, sol-gel, thin films.
Ca-doped TiO2 films were synthesized by the modified sol-gel method and employed as the electron transport material of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Morphological, optoelectronic, thermal, and electrical studies of thin films were investigated through XRD, RAMAN, SEM, AFM, UV-Vis, FTIR, and IV characteristics. Ca doping was detected with the help of structural properties while morphological analysis revealed that thin films based on Ca-doped titania are crack-free, homogenous, and uniformly distributed. Further optoelectronic properties have shown a promising conversion efficiency of 9.79% for 2% Ca-doped titania followed by 1% Ca-doped titania, while 3% have shown the lowest conversion efficiency among these prepared samples. The 2% an optimized doping of Ca has shown an almost two-fold increase in conversion efficiency in comparison to pristine TiO2, along with an increase in current density from 15 mA⋅cm−2 to 19.3 mA⋅cm−2. Improved energy efficiency and higher current density are a... [more]

Keywords: accelerated insulation ageing, HF motor models, partial discharges.
The insulation system’s dielectric of the electric motor is very often subjected to severe electrical stress generated by the high dv/dt seen at the machine’s terminals. The electrical stress and high reflected wave transient overvoltage are even more evident in case of high-speed machines fed by high-frequency (HF) converters featuring very fast wide-bandgap devices. They are promoting the occurrence of partial discharges and consequently accelerate ageing. As this is serious issue and the main cause of the drive failure, it is important to analyse and characterise the surges at the motor terminals. Several HF models of motors have been proposed in the literature for this purpose. This article presents a survey on HF motor models, which is crucial in understanding and studying the most critical parameter identification and overvoltage mitigation techniques. Moreover, it offers a comparison of the models’ main features as well as a comparison with the experimental voltage waveform at m... [more]

Keywords: accelerated aging, implantable batteries, lithium titanium oxide, overdischarge, sacral nerve stimulation, spinal cord stimulation.
For implanted medical devices containing rechargeable batteries, maximizing battery lifetime is paramount as surgery is required for battery replacement. In non-life-sustaining applications (e.g., spinal cord stimulators or sacral nerve modulation), these implants may be left unused and unmaintained for extended periods, according to patient preference or in the case of unexpected life events. In this study, we examine the performance of two commercial lithium-ion cells intended for implantable neurostimulators (using lithium titanium oxide (LTO) and graphite as the negative electrode) when subjected to repeated deep overdischarge and to aging at a high state of charge (SOC). The graphite-based cells exhibited significant performance decline and swelling after overdischarge and became unable to store a charge after 42 days at 0 V. In contrast, the LTO-based cells exhibited minimal changes in performance even after 84 days (the length of the study) at 0 V. When subjected to an accelerat... [more]

Keywords: active damping, eigenvalues, induction motor drive, instability, oscillations, small-signal model, stability analysis, V/Hz control.
Asynchronous machines are always widely used in most industrial applications due to their reliability, flexibility, and manoeuvrability. To achieve variable speed operations, the quite simple open-loop V/Hz control is largely utilized. Under open-loop V/Hz control, the nonlinear interaction is well known to cause current and torque oscillations while operating at low to medium speeds under light loads. This article presents the stability analysis of induction motors at low−medium frequencies under no-load conditions with the V/Hz control. A system representation in the form of state space is discussed, and the region of instability is plotted against the V/f plane. Two novel and refined methods for the mitigation of oscillations in the region of instability are presented. The two proposed algorithms are finally tested and validated through simulation on an inverter-fed induction motor drive system.

March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: DFIG, fuzzy controller, latency compensation, measurement systems, sub-synchronous resonance.
This paper proposes an auxiliary damping control approach based on the wide-area measurement system (WAMS). Its main objective is to mitigate sub-synchronous resonance (SSR) in doubly fed induction generator (DFIG)-based wind farms connected to a series capacitive compensated transmission network. To mitigate the delay in sending measurement signals, typically associated with wide-area measurement systems, a fuzzy logic wide-area damping controller (FLWADC) is considered to mitigate the time delay caused by the phasor measurement unit (PMU) measurement. The FLWADC is a supplementary signal at the stator voltage of the grid-side converter (GSC) of the DFIG-based wind farms. The FLWADC was executed by using the voltage and capacitor voltage variations of the series capacitive compensated transmission network. The effectiveness and validity of the proposed auxiliary damping control was verified using a modified scheme of the IEEE first benchmark model via time-area simulation analysis usi... [more]

March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: errorless control, microgrid, Model Predictive Control, robustness, sliding mode disturbance observer.
Regarding the microgrid with large-scale electric vehicle (EV) energy storage systems working at the vehicle-to-grid (V2G) mode, uncertain factors (e.g., the number of EVs feeding the microgrid shifts frequently) make the system unfixed, leading to the fact that it is difficult to precisely determine the real-time droop coefficients of the system, thereby degrading the performance of the traditional inverter control strategies that rely on the droop coefficients. To solve the problem, this paper proposes an errorless-control-targeted double control loop (DCL) technique based on robust MPC to control the microgrid with EV energy storage systems without using droop coefficients. Firstly, the structure of the DCL method is developed, with each component in the structure detailed. Compared to the traditional control strategies, the novel one regards the frequency, voltage, and currents as the control objectives instead of active/inactive power. It deserves to be mentioned that the frequenc... [more]

March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: biogenic residues, BtX, Carbon Dioxide, CFB, gasification, pressure gasification.
This research discusses the results of experiments performed on a large-scale gasification installation to determine the influence of total system pressure and partial pressure of CO2 on the efficiency of conversion and the quality of the produced gas. The three tested feedstocks were bark, lignin and a blend of bark and wheat straw, while softwood pellet (SWP) was used as a reference fuel. A mixture of O2/CO2/H2O was used as a gasification agent. The tests were devised to validate the previously proposed process parameters, verify whether similar ash agglomeration problems would occur and compare the thermal behaviour of the feedstocks converted in close-to-industrial process conditions. An understanding of the effect of using CO2 for gasification was further deepened, especially regarding its influence on the yield of H2 and temperature profiles of the fluidized bed. The influence of gasification pressure was predominantly visible in higher yields of all hydrocarbons (including CH4)... [more]

Keywords: forecasting gas consumption, lockdown, neural networks.
In March 2020, a lockdown was imposed due to a global pandemic, which contributed to changes in the structure of the consumption of natural gas. Consumption in the industry and the power sector decreased while household consumption increased. There was also a noticeable decrease in natural gas consumption by commercial consumers. Based on collected data, such as temperature, wind strength, duration of weather events, and information about weather conditions on preceding days, models for forecasting gas consumption by commercial consumers (hotels, restaurants, and businesses) were designed, and the best model for determining the impact of the lockdown on gas consumption by the above-mentioned consumers was determined using the MAPE (mean absolute percentage error). The best model of artificial neural networks (ANN) gave a 2.17% MAPE error. The study found a significant decrease in gas consumption by commercial customers during the first lockdown period.

Keywords: building energy systems, data-driven modeling, sensor calibration, soft sensors, virtual in-situ calibration (VIC), virtual sensors.
Intelligent building systems require a data-rich environment. Virtual sensors can provide informative and reliable sensing environments for operational datasets in building systems. In particular, backup virtual sensors that are in situ are beneficial for developing the counterparts of target physical sensors in the field, thus providing additional information about residuals between both types of sensors for use in data-driven modeling, analytics, and diagnostics. Therefore, to obtain virtual sensor potentials continuously during operation, we proposed an in situ calibration method for in situ backup virtual sensors (IBVS) in operational building energy systems, based on virtual in situ calibration (VIC). The proposed method was applied using operational datasets measured by a building automation system built into a target system. In a case study, the in situ virtual sensor showed large errors (the root mean squared error (RMSE) was 0.97 °C) on certain days. After conducting the propo... [more]

Keywords: airborne wind energy, kite control, L0 guidance logic, L1 guidance logic, path following.
For an efficient and reliable operation of an Airborne Wind Energy System, it is widely accepted that the kite should follow a pre-defined optimized path. In this article, we address the problem of designing a trajectory controller so that such path is closely followed. The path-following controllers investigated are based on a well-known nonlinear guidance logic termed L1 and on a proposed modification of it, which we termed L0. We have developed and implemented both L0 and L1 controllers for an AWES. The two controllers have an easy implementation with an explicit expression for the control law based on the cross-track error, on the heading angle relative to the path, and on a single parameter L (L0 or L1, depending on each controller) that we are able to tune. The L0 controller has an even easier implementation since the explicit control law can be used without the need to switch controllers. Since the switching of controllers might jeopardize stability, the L0 controller has an imp... [more]

Keywords: annual simulation, CO2 emissions, hybrid power system, micro-CHP system, power to gas, residential energy systems, SOFC.
Renewable energy sources based on solar and wind energy provide clean and efficient energy. The intermittent behaviour of these sources is challenging. At the same time, the needs for efficient, continuous and clean energy sources are increased for serving both electricity and thermal demands for residential buildings. Consequently, complimentary systems are essential in order to ensure a continuous power generation. One of the promising energy sources that helps in reducing CO2 emissions, in addition to providing electrical and thermal energy efficiently, is a Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC) system operated in a combined heat and power (CHP) mode, due to high electrical efficiencies (in full and part load) and the fuel flexibility. Currently, most studies tend to focus on fuel cell model details with basic information about the building’s energy requirements. Nevertheless, a deep understanding of integrating fuel cell micro-CHP systems with renewable energy systems for the residential se... [more]
