The quality of outdoor air in many places, especially in urbanized areas, is bad; therefore, a series of studies aimed at assessing the impact of outdoor air parameters on indoor air quality was conducted. Four nurseries (three buildings) located in different parts of Poznań, Poland were selected as research sites. During the research period, the concentrations of CO2, PM2.5, and PM10 inside and outside the buildings over time were analyzed. Measurements outside the buildings were supplemented with an analysis of traffic near nurseries and an assessment of pollutant emissions from vehicles of various categories. Measurements were conducted during the COVID-19 pandemic in a weekly series during winter (December)—(W), spring (April)—(S), and at the end of spring (June)—(LS). The majority of education buildings in Poland are equipped with natural (gravity) ventilation, where the air inflow depends on the level of window airtightness. A complete statistical urban population of 50 school buildings in Czestochowa have been examined. The main issue to be clarified is the answer to the following questions: Is it theoretically possible to supply enough air to meet the ventilation requirements with gravity ventilation? What is the airtightness of the windows at which it will be possible? The average technical conditions of windows in the analysed buildings were bad. Imbibition is an important mechanism of recovery during waterflooding and low flow-back during fracking in shale reservoirs. Experiments were carried out to study the development of imbibition in shale samples. The effects of clay minerals, especially the illite and IS, were mainly investigated and discussed. The imbibition under different pressures was conducted and compared. The influence of clay minerals on imbibition in shale is significant and complex. It is shown that the low content of illite and IS and small capillary force lead to small imbibition mass and speed. Formation of new micro fractures due to the swelling of clay minerals can cause the permeability to increase and the imbibition to be speeded up. Volatility and Dispersion of Hourly Electricity Contracts on the German Continuous Intraday Market

Intraday electricity trading on the continuous intraday market of EPEX SPOT is particularly well suited for the rebalancing of energy production. We analyzed the volatility and dispersion of individual hourly contracts, taking into account the particularities of the market, due to which the standard volatility measure from financial time series cannot be applied. We used and analyzed five measures for price fluctuations, which turned out to be similarly well suited for electricity contracts, with small differences. We then identified fundamental drivers of price fluctuations: the relative share of wind in the overall mix increased dispersion. Wind power penetration into the grid is increasing throughout the world due to centralized power generation constraints such as shortage of fossil fuel, need to reduce gas emissions, long transmission losses and need for more supply of electrical power. Connection of wind power into the grid results in power quality issues such as voltage profile changes and harmonics. This necessitates coming up with correction measures in order to meet power quality standards. This paper deals with the analysis of the effects of injecting wind power to the grid on voltage profile. Branch participation factors are used to analyze the sections of the grid where effects on voltage profile are highest due to wind power penetration. Reactive power-voltage sensitivity analysis is used to determine the buses that are more sensitive to the changes brought by the wind power injection. Wind Turbines (WTs) are exposed to harsh conditions and can experience extreme weather, such as blizzards and cold waves, which can directly affect temperature monitoring. This paper analyzes the effects of ambient conditions on WT monitoring. To reduce these effects, a novel WT monitoring method is also proposed in this paper. Compared with existing methods, the proposed method has two advantages: (1) the changes in ambient conditions are added to the input of the WT model; (2) an Extreme Learning Machine (ELM) optimized by Genetic Algorithm (GA) is applied to construct the WT model. Using Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA), compared with the method that does not consider the changes in ambient conditions, the proposed method can reduce the number of false alarms and provide an earlier alarm when a failure does occur.

This article presents the results of energy consumption research for an electric light commercial vehicle (eLCV) powered by a centrally located motor (4 × 2 drive system) or motors placed in the vehicle’s wheels (4 × 4 drive system). For the considered constructions of electric drive systems, mathematical models of 4 × 2 and 4 × 4 drive systems were developed in the Modelica simulation environment, based on real data. Additionally, the influence of changes in the vehicle loading condition on the operation of the motor mounted in the wheel and the energy consumption of the drive module was investigated. The operation and maintenance of railroad turnouts for rail vehicle traffic moving at speeds from 200 km/h to 350 km/h significantly differ from the processes of track operation without turnouts, curves, and crossings. Intensive wear of the railroad turnout components (switch blade, retaining rods, rails, and cross-brace) occurs. The movement of a rail vehicle on a switch causes high-dynamic impact, including vertical, normal, and lateral forces. This causes intensive rail and wheel wear. Remaining useful life (RUL) is a crucial assessment indicator to evaluate battery efficiency, robustness, and accuracy by determining battery failure occurrence in electric vehicle (EV) applications. RUL prediction is necessary for timely maintenance and replacement of the battery in EVs. This paper proposes an artificial neural network (ANN) technique to predict the RUL of lithium-ion batteries under various training datasets. A multi-channel input (MCI) profile is implemented and compared with single-channel input (SCI) or single input (SI) with diverse datasets. Accurately predicting surface vibration signals of diesel engines is the key to evaluating the operation quality of diesel engines. Based on an improved empirical mode decomposition and extreme learning machine algorithm, the characteristics of diesel engine surface vibration signal were detected, predicted, and analyzed. First, the surface vibration signal was decomposed into a series of signal components by an improved empirical mode decomposition algorithm. Then, the extreme learning machine algorithm was applied to each signal component to obtain the predicted value of the corresponding signal component and determine the characteristics of the ground vibration signal. Compared with the empirical mode decomposition−extremum learning machine algorithm and the extremum learning machine algorithm, the results show that the improved empirical mode decomposition−extremum learning machine algorithm is feasible and effective.
Numerical Simulation of Combustion and Characteristics of Fly Ash and Slag in a “V-type” Waste Incinerator

This study is focused on a “V-type” waste incinerator for municipal solid waste (MSW) combustion. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) methods are used to study the MSW combustion process. The characteristics of fly ash and slag are analyzed by using a laser particle analyzer, scanning electron microscope, X-ray fluorescence, and X-ray diffraction. The results show that the error between the CFD simulation data and measured data is less than 10%, and the changing trend of the combustion process is well-modeled. The fly ash mainly has an irregular spherical or ellipsoid structure, whereas the slag mainly has an irregular porous structure. The main constituents of the ash and slag are CaO and SiO2, along with heavy metal elements such as Cu, Pb, and Cr.

The need for advancements in residential construction and the hazard induced by the shrink−swell reactive soil movement prompted the development of the prefabricated footing system of this study, which was assessed and compared to a conventional waffle raft using a multi-criteria analysis. The assessment evaluates the structural performance, cost efficiency, and sustainability using finite element modelling, life cycle cost analysis, and life cycle assessment, respectively. The structural performance of the developed prefabricated system was found to have reduced the deformation and cracking by approximately 40%. Although the energy consumption of large-scale factories and industries has increased dramatically, and the energies losses have an increment in the power transmission lines, this policy can result in decreasing the energy consumption intensity due to the changes in consumption patterns. If there is a correlation between two variables, the price can be a valid variable to control cost and increase consumption efficiency. Voltage Rise Regulation with a Grid Connected Solar Photovoltaic System

Renewable Distributed Generation (RDG), when connected to a Distribution Network (DN), suffers from power quality issues because of the distorted currents drawn from the loads connected to the network over generation of active power injection at the Point of Common Coupling (PCC). This research paper presents the voltage rise regulation strategy at the PCC to enhance power quality and continuous operation of RDG, such as Photovoltaic Arrays (PVAs) connected to a DN. If the PCC voltage is not regulated, the penetration levels of the renewable energy integration to a DN will be limited or may be ultimately disconnected in the case of a voltage rise issue.
