A Novel Sooty Terns Algorithm for Deregulated MPC-LFC Installed in Multi-Interconnected System with Renewable Energy Plants
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: deregulated LFC, Model Predictive Control, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, sooty terns optimization
This paper introduces a novel metaheuristic approach of sooty terns optimization algorithm (STOA) to determine the optimum parameters of model predictive control (MPC)-based deregulated load frequency control (LFC). The system structure consists of three interconnected plants with nonlinear multisources comprising wind turbine, photovoltaic model with maximum power point tracker, and superconducting magnetic energy storage under deregulated environment. The proposed objective function is the integral time absolute error (ITAE) of the deviations in frequencies and powers in tie-lines. The analysis aims at determining the optimum parameters of MPC via STOA such that ITAE is minimized. Moreover, the proposed STOA-MPC is examined under variation of the system parameters and random load disturbance. The time responses and performance specifications of the proposed STOA-MPC are compared to those obtained with MPC optimized via differential evolution, intelligent water drops algorithm, stain... A Variable Performance Parameters Temperature−Flowrate Scheduling Model for Integrated Energy Systems
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: COP-expansion method, integrated energy system in China, linearization technique, mixed integer linear programming, optimal operation strategy, temperature–flowrate based scheduling model, variable performance parameter
Optimal scheduling strategy of integrated energy systems (IES) with combined cooling, heating and power (CCHP) has become increasingly important. In order to make the scheduling strategy fit to the practical implementation, this paper proposes a variable performance parameters temperature−flowrate scheduling model for IES with CCHP. The novel scheduling model is established by taking flowrate and temperature as decision variables directly. In addition, performance parameters are treated as variables rather than constants in the proposed model. Specifically, the efficiencies of the gas turbine and the waste heating boiler are estimated with the partial load factor, and the coefficient of performance (COP) of the electrical chillers and heat pumps are estimated with the partial load factor and outlet water temperature. Then, to deal with the model nonlinearities caused by considering the variability of COPs, the COP-expansion method is developed by adopting a specific representation of t... [more]

The Architecture of a Real-Time Control System for Heating Energy Management in the Intelligent Building
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: FPGA, HVAC, intelligent building, intelligent heating control
Very often, constructors and designers of intelligent building and building automation systems have a choice: to create a compact system with a limited configuration and modifying the system’s behavior possibilities or provide a fully configurable solution at the expense of introducing a full SCADA system equipped with an additional knowledge database and inference system equipped with learning capabilities. In the presented work, we show that there is a third solution. Using a multilayer control system composed of programmable FPGAs, small PCs, and cloud computing resources, we can design and implement a fully configurable intelligent control system for the building’s heating. Our solution combines the compactness of the structure and the ease of installation and assembly.

Energy Benefits of Heat Pipe Technology for Achieving 100% Renewable Heating and Cooling for Fifth-Generation, Low-Temperature District Heating Systems
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: 100% renewable heating and cooling, cascaded heat pumps, equipment oversizing, exergy destructions, exergy rationality, heat pipe, heat pipe radiator, low-temperature district heating, nearly-avoidable CO2 emissions responsibility, nearly-zero carbon building, solar PVT, thermal storage
This paper addresses the challenges the policymakers face concerning the EU decarbonization and total electrification roadmaps towards the Paris Agreement set forth to solve the global warming problem within the framework of a 100% renewable heating and cooling target. A new holistic model was developed based on the Rational Exergy Management Model (REMM). This model optimally solves the energy and exergy conflicts between the benefits of using widely available, low-temperature, low-exergy waste and renewable energy sources, like solar energy, and the inability of existing heating equipment, which requires higher exergy to cope with such low temperatures. In recognition of the challenges of retrofitting existing buildings in the EU stock, most of which are more than fifty years old, this study has developed a multi-pronged solution set. The first prong is the development of heating and cooling equipment with heat pipes that may be customized for supply temperatures as low as 35 °C in h... [more]

Electric Field Distribution in HVDC Cable Joint in Non-Stationary Conditions
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: accessories, field distribution, HVDC cable system, space charge
Accessories such as joints and terminations represent weak points in HVDC cable systems. The DC field distribution is intimately dependent on the thermal conditions of the accessory and on material properties. Moreover, there is no available method to probe charge distribution in these conditions. In this work, the field distribution in non-stationary conditions, both thermally and electrically, is computed considering crosslinked polyethylene (XLPE) as cable insulation and different insulating materials (silicone, rubber, XLPE) for a 200 kV joint assembled in a same geometry. In the conditions used, i.e., temperatures up to 70 °C, and with the material properties considered, the dielectric time constant appears of the same order or longer than the thermal one and is of several hours. This indicates that both physical phenomena need to be considered for modelling the electric field distribution. Both the radial and the tangential field distributions are analysed, and focus is given on... [more]

The Energy Transition and Shifts in Fossil Fuel Use: The Study of International Energy Trade and Energy Security Dynamics
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: energy security, energy transition, global energy flows, international trade, networks
The global energy mix is undergoing an accelerating transformation driven by new resources, novel technologies, and climate change-related commitments. Changes in the use and availability of energy resources have affected fossil fuels (coal, oil, and natural gas) trade patterns. Some economies enjoy increasing energy independence, whereas others become more dependent on imports to satisfy their energy needs. Using 2000−2018 United Nations Commodity trade and International Energy Agency energy- and monetary-flow data, we examine the evolution of the international network of energy flows to reveal new patterns and understand their energy security implications. Our work explores how the growth in the U.S. unconventional resources, European Union renewable energy, China’s natural gas consumption, and changes in other country energy flows affect economy positions and trade-network connectivity. Testing the small-world property helps us understand the diffusion of new technologies, including... [more]

March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Operations
Keywords: emergency generator, energy storage system, ESS load test device, fire-fighting facilities, PSCAD/EMTDC S/W
Emergency generators are important facilities that supply emergency power to fire-fighting facilities in the event of a power outage. Accordingly, a load test of the emergency generator should be performed by cutting off the power source of the fire-fighting target in order to accurately confirm the performance and condition of the emergency generator in normal circumstances. However, the test has usually been carried out without loads due to serious problems, which are caused by a shutdown of the power source for the load test of emergency generators, such as the shutdown of emergency load, etc. In order to overcome these problems, this paper proposes an operation method and algorithm of a load test device using ESS, which can conform to characteristics of emergency loads installed in fire-fighting targets by interconnecting it with the emergency generator. In addition, this paper performs a modeling of an emergency power system using PSCAD/EMTDC, and then this paper confirms the usef... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: finite element analysis (FEA), high voltage systems, insulated-gate bipolar transistor (IGBT), insulation systems, low-pressure conditions, more-electric aircraft, partial discharge
Many sectors, such as transportation systems, are undergoing rapid electrification due to the need for the mitigation of CO2 emissions. To ensure safe and reliable operation, the electrical equipment must be able to work under various environmental conditions. At high altitudes, the low pressure can adversely affect the health of insulating materials of electrical systems in electric aircraft. A well-known, primary aging mechanism in dielectrics is partial discharge (PD). This study targets internal PD evaluation in an insulated-gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) module under low-pressure conditions. The estimation of electric field distribution is conducted through 3D finite element analysis (FEA) using COMSOL Multiphysics®. The procedure of PD detection and transient modeling is performed in MATLAB for two pressure levels (atmospheric and half-atmospheric). Anaerobic Digestion of Wastewater Sludge and Alkaline-Pretreated Wheat Straw at Semi-Continuous Pilot Scale: Performances and Energy Assessment
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: anaerobic digestion, batch tests, energy assessment, pretreatment, semi-continuous pilot
During the last decade, the application of pretreatment has been investigated to enhance methane production from lignocellulosic biomass such as wheat straw (WS). Nonetheless, most of these studies were conducted in laboratory batch tests, potentially hiding instability problems or inhibition, which may fail in truly predicting full-scale reactor performance. For this purpose, the effect of an alkaline pretreatment on process performance and methane yields from WS (0.10 g NaOH g−1 WS at 90 °C for 1 h) co-digested with fresh wastewater sludge was evaluated in a pilot-scale reactor (20 L). Results showed that alkaline pretreatment resulted in better delignification (44%) and hemicellulose solubilization (62%) compared to untreated WS. Pilot-scale study showed that the alkaline pretreatment improved the methane production (261 ± 3 Nm3 CH4 t−1 VS) compared to untreated WS (201 ± 6 Nm3 CH4 t−1 VS). Stable process without any inhibition was observed and a high alkalinity was maintained in th... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: bio-abio interface, bioelectricity, bioelectrochemistry, biomass-to-energy
Microorganism affinity for surfaces can be controlled by introducing material binding motifs into proteins such as fimbrial tip and outer membrane proteins. Here, controlled surface affinity is used to manipulate and enhance electrical power production in a typical bioelectrochemical system, a microbial fuel cell (MFC). Specifically, gold-binding motifs of various affinity were introduced into two scaffolds in Escherichia coli: eCPX, a modified version of outer membrane protein X (OmpX), and FimH, the tip protein of the fimbriae. The behavior of these strains on gold electrodes was examined in small-scale (240 µL) MFCs and 40 mL U-tube MFCs. A clear correlation between the affinity of a strain for a gold surface and the peak voltage produced during MFC operation is shown in the small-scale MFCs; strains displaying peptides with high affinity for gold generate potentials greater than 80 mV while strains displaying peptides with minimal affinity to gold produce potentials around 30 mV. Subject: Process Control
Keywords: advanced inverter, distribution system, IEC 61850-90-7, IEEE 1547, photovoltaic, power system analysis, power system modeling, reactive power control, voltage regulation
The high penetration of the distributed energy resources (DERs) encourages themselves to implement grid-supporting functions, such as volt-var control. The quasi-static time-series (QSTS) simulation is an essential technique to evaluate the impact of active DERs on the grid. Meanwhile, the increase of complexity on the circuit model causes a heavy computational burden of QSTS simulation. Although circuit reduction methods have been proposed, there have been few methods that can appropriately handle the distribution system (DS) with multiple voltage control devices, such as DERs implementing volt-var control. To address the remaining issues, this paper proposes an offline bus aggregation method for DS with volt-var control. The method determines the volt-var curve for the aggregated bus on the basis of historical data to reduce error in the aggregated model, and its offline process solves the computational convergence issue concerned in the online one. Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: CFD Fluent, courtyard, nature ventilation, thermal performance, vegetation
Natural ventilation is an energy-efficient way to provide fresh air and enhance indoor comfort levels. The wind-driven natural ventilation in courtyards has been investigated by many researchers, particularly the influence of the spatial configuration and environmental parameters on the ventilation and thermal comfort performance. However, previous research has mainly focused on the courtyard region instead of the indoor spaces surrounding it. Additionally, as a microclimate regulator, courtyards are rarely assessed in terms of the impact of vegetation, including its impact on energy consumption and thermal comfort. Evapotranspiration from vegetation can help lower air temperature in the surrounding environment and, therefore, its influence on the ventilation and thermal comfort in buildings with courtyards should be evaluated. The present study investigates the impact of vegetation on the aero-thermal comfort conditions in a courtyard and surrounding buildings in hot climates. Computa... [more]

Charging for Collaboration: Exploring the Dynamics of Temporal Fit in Interdependent Constellations for Innovation
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: collaborative innovation setting, electric vehicles, entrainment, EV charging infrastructure, temporal work
The development of a suitable public charging system for electric vehicles relies on inputs from many complementary organizations that need to synchronize interdependencies across different activities, organizations, and industries. Research on temporal fit has focused on synchronizing activities within or external to the organization, rather than exploring synchronization across multiple organizations with highly interdependent yet colliding temporal structures and multiple time-givers. Drawing on a case study of a collaborative effort to create a national charging infrastructure for electric vehicles, we theorize the interplay between various highly interdependent actors. The resulting theory posits that actors combine and shift between different innovation practices to organize time and explains how multiple, yet interdependent actors engaging in temporal work attempt to accomplish temporal fit. Three entrainment dynamics are identified: (1) temporal tug-of-war through ecosystem con... [more]

Development of a Smart Energy Community by Coupling Neighbouring Community Microgrids for Enhanced Power Sharing Using Customised Droop Control
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: community microgrids, droop control, energy community, interconnected system, parallel inverter, power management, power sharing
This article aims to develop a smart isolated energy community (EC) by coupling the neighbouring rural community microgrids (CMGs) with enhanced droop control for efficient power sharing. This recommended solution employs a power management (PM) based droop-control to enable independent neighbouring CMGs to share power on an available basis by not constraining CMG inverters to equal power sharing. During the grid-connected mode, the droop control may have different power setpoints of each CMG. However, during the standalone mode of operation, the power setpoint should be defined according to their power rating and availability to maintain the system stability. In this article, a PM strategy is developed to maintain the power setpoints of the autonomous CMGs. An improper selection of power setpoints in autonomous CMG can raise the DC link voltage to an unmanageable value and can cause an inadvertent shutdown of CMG. The suggested PM-based droop control enables the CMG inverter not to re... [more]

Centralized Energy Prediction in Wireless Sensor Networks Leveraged by Software-Defined Networking
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: centralized prediction, energy consumption, software-defined networking
Resource Constraints in Wireless Sensor Networks are a key factor in protocols and application design. Furthermore, energy consumption plays an important role in protocols decisions, such as routing metrics. In Software-Defined Networking (SDN)-based networks, the controller is in charge of all control and routing decisions. Using energy as a metric requires such information from the nodes, which would increase packets traffic, impacting the network performance. Previous works have used energy prediction techniques to reduce the number of packets exchanged in traditional distributed routing protocols. We applied this technique in Software-Defined Wireless Sensor Networks (SDWSN). For this, we implemented an energy prediction algorithm for SDWSN using Markov chain. We evaluated its performance executing the prediction on every node and on the SDN controller. Then, we compared their results with the case without prediction. Our results showed that by running the Markov chain on the contr... [more]

A Quasi-Oppositional Heap-Based Optimization Technique for Power Flow Analysis by Considering Large Scale Photovoltaic Generator
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: and loadability limits, differential evolution, high R/X ratio, load flow, multiple solutions, photovoltaic generator
Load flow analysis is an essential tool for the reliable planning and operation of interconnected power systems. The constant increase in power demand, apart from the increased intermittency in power generation due to renewable energy sources without proportionate augmentation in transmission system infrastructure, has driven the power systems to function nearer to their limits. Though the power flow (PF) solution may exist in such circumstances, the traditional Newton−Raphson based PF techniques may fail due to computational difficulties owing to the singularity of the Jacobian Matrix during critical conditions and faces difficulties in solving ill-conditioned systems. To address these problems and to assess the impact of large-scale photovoltaic generator (PVG) integration in power systems on power flow studies, a derivative-free quasi-oppositional heap-based optimization (HBO) (QOHBO) technique is proposed in the present paper. In the proposed approach, the concept of quasi-oppositi... [more]

Optimal Sizing of Hybrid Wind-Solar Power Systems to Suppress Output Fluctuation
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: fluctuation, optimal layout, ramping rate, wake effect, wind farm
Harnessing wind energy is one of the fastest-growing areas in the energy industry. However, wind power still faces challenges, such as output intermittency due to its nature and output reduction as a result of the wake effect. Moreover, the current practice uses the available renewable energy resources as a fuel-saver simply to reduce fossil-fuel consumption. This is related mainly to the inherently variable and non-dispatchable nature of renewable energy resources, which poses a threat to power system reliability and requires utilities to maintain power-balancing reserves to match the supply from renewable energy resources with the real-time demand levels. Thus, further efforts are needed to mitigate the risk that comes with integrating renewable resources into the electricity grid. Hence, an integrated strategy is being created to determine the optimal size of the hybrid wind-solar photovoltaic power systems (HWSPS) using heuristic optimization with a numerical iterative algorithm su...
