New Cell Balancing Charging System Research for Lithium-ion Batteries
Chan-Yong Zun, Sang-Uk Park, Hyung-Soo Mok.
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: battery, battery charging, battery management system, cell balancing, passive cell balancing.
With recent advancements in the electrical industry, the demand for high capacity and high energy density batteries has increased, subsequently increasing the demand for fast and reliable battery charging. A battery is an assembly of a plurality of cells, in which maintaining a balance between neighboring cells is crucial for stable charging. To this end, various methods have been applied to battery management systems. Representative methods for maintaining the balance in battery cells include a passive method of adjusting the balance using a resistor and an active method involving the exchange of energy between the cells. However, these methods are limited in terms of efficiency, lifespan, and charging time. Therefore, in this study, we propose a new charging method at the battery cell level and demonstrate its effectiveness through experiments.

March 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: cost minimization, generation expansion planning, power system modeling, probabilistic generation costing, WASP model.
This paper presents several applications of Wien Automatic System Planning (WASP) tool to address specific modeling challenges encountered in power system expansion planning problems. Although WASP has been used by power system planners around the world for many decades, its standard formulation does not allow the user to explicitly model many situations that can occur in realistic power systems. Examples of such situations include dual-fuel plants, options for electricity exports, energy exchange agreements with neighboring systems, and considering large generating units as candidates in relatively small-size systems. A number of alternative modeling solutions are proposed in the paper based on the authors’ long-term experience in carrying out generation expansion studies for electricity systems of various types and sizes. These solutions demonstrate the flexibility of using WASP to model atypical features of power systems.

Subject: Materials
Keywords: adsorption chiller, carbon nanotubes, silica gel, thermal diffusivity.
This article presents a study of the effect of metal particle and carbon nanotube additives on the thermal diffusivity of a silica-gel-based adsorption bed of an adsorption chiller. The structural properties of silica gel and carbon nanotubes were investigated using the volumetric method of low-pressure nitrogen adsorption. Thermal characteristic tests of the prepared mixtures based on a silica gel with 5 wt% and 15 wt% of aluminum, copper, or carbon nanotubes were carried out. The obtained results show that all the materials used as additives in blends in this study achieved higher thermal diffusivities in comparison with the thermal diffusivity of the parent silica gel. However, the best effect was observed for the mixture with 15 wt% aluminum.

March 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: continuous input current, DC–AC inverter, impedance source inverter, quasi Z-source inverter, switched boost inverter, Z-source inverter.
Impedance source converters as single-stage power conversion alternatives can boost and regulate the output voltages of renewable energy sources. Nevertheless, they, also known as Z-source inverters (ZSIs), still suffer from limited voltage gains and higher stresses across the components. To tackle such issues, extra diodes, passive components, and active switches can be utilized in the basic ZSIs. In this paper, a modified switched-quasi-Z-source inverter (S-qZSI) is proposed, which features continuous input currents and high boosting capability to boost output voltage by minor modifications of a prior-art topology. Furthermore, the voltage stress of the active switches is reduced, which contributes to a lower cost. The operation principles are discussed comprehensively. The performance of the proposed ZSI in terms of conversion ratio, voltage gain, and stresses on the power switches and capacitors is benchmarked with selected ZSIs. Finally, simulations and experimental tests substant... [more]

Omid Abrishambaf, Pedro Faria, Zita Vale.
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: aggregator, demand response, ramp period, real-time simulation.
System operators have moved towards the integration of renewable resources. However, these resources make network management unstable as they have variations in produced energy. Thus, some strategic plans, like demand response programs, are required to overcome these concerns. This paper develops an aggregator model with a precise vision of the demand response timeline. The model at first discusses the role of an aggregator, and thereafter is presented an innovative approach to how the aggregator deals with short and real-time demand response programs. A case study is developed for the model using real-time simulator and laboratory resources to survey the performance of the model under practical challenges. The real-time simulation uses an OP5600 machine that controls six laboratory resistive loads. Furthermore, the actual consumption profiles are adapted from the loads with a small-time step to precisely survey the behavior of each load. Also, remuneration costs of the event during th... [more]

Keywords: CED, Eco-indicator 99, IPCC, landfill, LCA, photovoltaics panels, recycling.
During the conversion of solar radiation into electricity, photovoltaic installations do not emit harmful compounds into the environment. However, the stage of production and post-use management of their elements requires large amounts of energy and materials. Therefore, this publication was intended to conduct an eco-energy life cycle analysis of photovoltaic power plant materials and components based on the LCA method. The subject of the study was a 1 MW photovoltaic power plant, located in Poland. Eco-indicator 99, CED and IPCC were used as calculation procedures. Among the analyzed elements of the power plant, the highest level of negative impact on the environment was characterized by the life cycle of photovoltaic panels stored at the landfill after exploitation (the highest demand for energy, materials and CO2 emissions). Among the materials of the power plant distinguished by the highest harmful effect on health and the quality of the environment stands out: silver, nickel, cop... [more]

Keywords: Adsorption, composite sorbents “LiCl/silica gel”, desiccant coated heat exchanger, humidity and heat recuperation, mathematical simulation.
Due to global climate change and fossil fuel depletion, the rational use of thermal energy has attracted great research interest. Large differences between indoor and outdoor temperatures in cold regions results in huge amounts of heat waste and drop in indoor humidity. Ventireg, an adsorption method, has been often recommended for heat and humidity regeneration in cold countries. In this research work, VentireC, an advanced method employing two thermally coupled adsorbent beds is discussed. It allows the heat released during adsorption of moisture in one adsorber to be transferred to another adsorber to facilitate water desorption. The VentireC approach is comprehensively analysed and described in this paper. A composite adsorbent based on LiCl in silica gel pores, which can exchange up to 0.5 g-H2O/g-sorbent, is selected for VentireC processes under cold Western Siberia conditions. Mathematical simulation of humidity recuperation, employing the selected sorbent with and without therm... [more]

Keywords: EV, intrusion detection, self-learning, Sybil attack.
Electric vehicles (EVs) are the development direction of new energy vehicles in the future. As an important part of the Internet of things (IOT) communication network, the charging pile is also facing severe challenges in information security. At present, most detection methods need a lot of prophetic data and too much human intervention, so they cannot do anything about unknown attacks. In this paper, a self-learning-based attack detection method is proposed, which makes training and prediction a closed-loop system according to a large number of false information packets broadcast to the communication network. Using long short-term memory (LSTM) neural network training to obtain the characteristics of traffic data changes in the time dimension, the unknown malicious behavior characteristics are self-extracted and self-learning, improving the detection efficiency and quality. In this paper, we take the Sybil attack in the car network as an example. The simulation results show that the... [more]

March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: energy storage for grid application, life cycle assessment (LCA), life cycle costing (LCC), lithium-ion battery, reduction of CO2 emission.
This article presents the results of an eco-efficiency assessment of the application of large-scale rechargeable battery technology in electricity generation from coal. The eco-efficiency of electricity production in a 350 MW coal-fired power plant was calculated. Two production variants were compared: with the use of a lithium-ion battery of a 400 MWh capacity to optimize the operation of power blocks and without using the battery. Hard coal is one of the main fossil fuels used to generate electricity in Poland. Despite the growing share of electricity from renewable sources, this situation will persist for many more years. The main reasons for this are the high costs and long-lasting process of moving away from fossil fuels in the energy sector. Therefore, any technical solutions that can temporarily reduce the negative impact of coal-based power engineering on the environment should be considered. At the same time, the economic aspects of such solutions must be taken into account. T... [more]

Keywords: building energy simulation, shading calculations, sky discretization.
The calculation of sunlit surfaces in a building has always been a relevant aspect in building energy simulation programs. Due to the high computational cost, some programs use algorithms for shading calculation for certain solar positions after discretization of hemispherical sky. The influence of the level of discretization on the estimation of incident direct radiation on building surfaces, as well as on the required computational times, are studied in this work. The direct solar energy on a window for a year, with simulation time steps of five minutes, has been simulated by using an algorithm based on Projection and Clipping Methods. A total of 6144 simulations have been carried out, varying window sizes, window orientations, typologies of shading devices, latitudes and discretization levels of the hemispherical sky. In terms of annual incident solar energy, the results show that maximum error values are about 5% for a low level of angular discretization. Errors up to 22% in hourly... [more]

Keywords: electric rudder system, finite time rudder control, Genetic Algorithm, parameter identification.
The electric rudder system (ERS) is the executive mechanism of the flight control system, which can make the missile complete the route correction according to the control command. The performance and quality of the ERS directly determine the dynamic quality of the flight control system. However, the transient and static characteristic of ERS is affected by the uncertainty of physical parameters caused by nonlinear factors. Therefore, the control strategy based on genetic algorithm (GA) identification method and finite-time rudder control (FTRC) theory is studied to improve the control accuracy and speed of the system. Differently from the existing methods, in this method, the difficulty of parameter uncertainty in the controller design is solved based on the ERS mathematical model parameter identification strategy. Besides, in this way, the performance of the FTRC controller was verified by cosimulation experiments based on automatic dynamic analysis of mechanical systems (ADAMS) (MSC... [more]

When considering waste heat recovery systems for marine applications, which are estimated to be suitable to reduce the carbon dioxide emissions up to 20%, the use of organic Rankine cycle power systems has been proven to lead to higher savings compared to the traditional steam Rankine cycle. However, current methods to estimate the techno-economic feasibility of such a system are complex, computationally expensive and require significant specialized knowledge. This is the first article that presents a simplified method to carry out feasibility analyses for the implementation of organic Rankine cycle waste heat recovery units on board vessels using low-sulfur fuels. The method consists of a set of regression curves derived from a synthetic dataset obtained by evaluating the performance of organic Rankine cycle systems over a wide range of design and operating conditions. The accuracy of the proposed method is validated by comparing its estimations with the ones attained using thermodyna... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: dielectric barrier discharge, flow control, plasma actuators, separation control.
A dielectric barrier discharge actuator (DBD) is considered and studied as a stall recovery device. The DBD is installed on the nose of a NACA0015 airfoil with chord × span 300 × 930 mm. The geometry of the exposed electrode has periodic triangular tips purposely designed for the case under study. Wind tunnel tests have been carried out over a range of airspeeds up to 35 m/s with a Reynolds number of 700 k. The flow morphology has been characterized by means of the particle image velocimetry technique, obtaining velocity fields and pressure coefficients. By exploring different planes along the model span, the three-dimensional effect of the DBD has been reconstructed, identifying the flow region mainly sensitive to the plasma actuation. Finally, the actuator effectiveness has been quantified accounting for the power consumption data, leading to defining further design improvements in view of a better efficiency.

Keywords: dynamic stall, flow control, nanosecond pulse discharge, plasma actuators, pressure measurement.
The flow control effects of a nanosecond-pulse-driven dielectric barrier discharge plasma actuator (ns-DBDPA) in dynamic stall flow were experimentally investigated. The ns-DBDPA was installed on the leading edge of an airfoil model designed in the form of a helicopter blade. The model was oscillated periodically around 25% of the chord length. Aerodynamic coefficients were calculated using the pressure distribution, which was obtained by the measurement of the unsteady pressure by sensors inside the model. The flow control effect and its sensitivity to pitching oscillation and ns-DBDPA control parameters are discussed using the aerodynamic coefficients. The freestream velocity, the mean of the angle of attack, and the reduced frequency were employed as the oscillation parameters. Moreover, the nondimensional frequency of the pulse voltage, the peak pulse voltage, and the type and position of the ns-DBDPA were adopted as the control parameters. March 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: ELM, grey wolf optimizer, multi-domain fault diagnosis, principal components analysis (PCA), VMD.
Since variational mode decomposition (VMD) was proposed, it has been widely used in condition monitoring and fault diagnosis of mechanical equipment. However, the parameters K and α in the VMD algorithm need to be set before decomposition, which causes VMD to be unable to decompose adaptively and obtain the best result for signal decomposition. Therefore, this paper optimizes the VMD algorithm. On this basis, this paper also proposes a method of multi-domain feature extraction of signals and combines an extreme learning machine (ELM) to realize comprehensive and accurate fault diagnosis. First, VMD is optimized according to the improved grey wolf optimizer; second, the feature vectors of the time, frequency, and time-frequency domains are calculated, which are synthesized after dimensionality reduction; ultimately, the synthesized vectors are input into the ELM for training and classification. The experimental results show that the proposed method can decompose the signal adaptively, w... [more]

Subject: Other
Keywords: controlling distributed generation, voltage regulation, voltage source inverter control, weak ac-connections.
The integration of distributed energy resources (DERs) in modern power systems has substantially changed the local control capabilities of the grid since the majority of DERs are connected through a controlled dc/ac inverter interface. Such long-distance located DER installations, usually represented by current regulated dc sources, can inject large amounts of power into the main ac grid at points where the strength of the ac connection is low. The efficient and stable performance of such a power scheme is related to the capability of the control applied to retain the power extraction close to the maximum and simultaneously to regulate the dc-side voltage as well as the ac-side voltage magnitude at the weak ac connection point. This is implemented by designing the controllers of the voltage source inverters (VSIs) in a manner that reliably satisfies the above tasks. To this end, decentralized cascaded control schemes, driven by novel, locally implemented phase locked loops (PLLs), suit... [more]

Keywords: fast terminal sliding mode control, non-linear, power converters, wireless power transfer.
Compared to the plug-in charging system, Wireless power transfer (WPT) is simpler, reliable, and user-friendly. Resonant inductive coupling based WPT is the technology that promises to replace the plug-in charging system. It is desired that the WPT system should provide regulated current and power with high efficiency. Due to the instability in the connected load, the system output current, power, and efficiency vary. To solve this issue, a buck converter is implemented on the secondary side of the WPT system, which adjusts its internal resistance by altering its duty cycle. To control the duty cycle of the buck converter, a discrete fast terminal sliding mode controller is proposed to regulate the system output current and power with optimal efficiency. The proposed WPT system uses the LCC-S compensation topology to ensure a constant output voltage at the input of the buck converter. The LCC-S topology is analyzed using the two-port network theory, and governing equations are derived... [more]

Keywords: LoRa networks, low latency, multi-hop networks, parallel transmissions.
LoRa (Long Range) is a long-range communications capacity with chirp spread spectrum modulation. It has been developed for Internet of Things (IoT) applications for long-distance and low power consumption. Some authors proposed LoRa protocols such as LoRaWAN, LoRaBlink, DQ-LoRa and the multi-hop LoRa network with linear topology; however, these protocols have disadvantages. In this paper, we propose a minimized latency multi-hop LoRa network protocol that is collision-free with low latency to improve on the disadvantages. First, in the proposed protocol, tree topology is constructed by exchanging packets between LoRa nodes and the sink node. During this period, a timeslot and channel are assigned to each tree link, over which LoRa nodes communicate with their parent node and which is collision-free with its neighbor nodes. After the tree construction period, LoRa nodes start data transmission using the timeslot and channel that they have already been assigned to in the tree constructio... [more]

Keywords: local search, Particle Swarm Optimization, sea surface temperature, sea surface temperature prediction, similarity measure, support vector machine.
The Sea Surface Temperature (SST) is one of the key factors affecting ocean climate change. Hence, Sea Surface Temperature Prediction (SSTP) is of great significance to the study of navigation and meteorology. However, SST data is well-known to suffer from high levels of redundant information, which makes it very difficult to realize accurate predictions, for instance when using time-series regression. This paper constructs a simple yet effective SSTP model, dubbed DSL (given its origination from methods known as DTW, SVM and LSPSO). DSL is based on time-series similarity measure, multiple pattern learning and parameter optimization. It consists of three parts: (1) using Dynamic Time Warping (DTW) to mine the similarities in historical SST series; (2) training a Support Vector Machine (SVM) using the top-k similar patterns, deriving a robust SSTP model that offers a 5-day prediction window based on multiple SST input sequences; and (3) developing an improved Particle Swarm Optimization...
