Towards the introduction of environmentally friendlier refrigerants, CO2 cycles have gained significant attention in cooling and air conditioning systems in recent years. In this context, a design procedure for an air finned-tube CO2 gas cooler is developed. The analysis aims to evaluate the gas cooler design incorporated into a CO2 air conditioning system for residential applications. Therefore, a simulation model of the gas cooler is developed and validated experimentally by comparing its overall heat transfer coefficient. Based on the model, the evaluation of different numbers of rows, lengths, and diameters of tubes, as well as different ambient temperatures, are conducted, identifying the most suitable design in terms of pressure losses and required heat exchange area for selected operational conditions. This study proposes an innovative method integrating Geographic Information System (GIS), fuzzy Analytic Hierarchy Process (FAHP), and fuzzy VIšekriterijumsko KOmpromisno Rangiranje (VIKOR) for site selection of wind farms in the Wafangdian region, China. The increased demand for wind power is related to changes in the sizes of wind turbines and the development of flow control devices, such as vortex generators (VGs). Curtailment of electric service in areas under fire threat has been implemented to avoid these wildfires. Results from this research indicated that 24% of California’s cities are at risk of wildfire, while 52% are at risk of blackout. These blackouts have resulted in significant financial losses and risk to life and health. Undergrounding current transmission lines has been proposed as a long-term solution. A novel and intelligent product development approach is required in this fast-growing and advanced technological era. Therefore, textile researchers have worked intensively to create efficient and transparent solutions for complex developments by using advanced modeling and simulation tools and techniques. This paper addresses a process for the thermal simulation of sportswear by considering the human thermophysiological model and important thermal properties of fabrics, i.e., thermal resistance, evaporative resistance, and permeability index. The results of the simulation are illustrated in terms of core body and mean skin temperatures. Moreover, results are validated by wear trials showing good consistency. This study is beneficial to the development of clothing for specific sports and the evaluation of comfort and heat stress during different sports activities.

Differences in the densities of bed material and—especially biogenic—solid fuels prevent an ideal mixture within bubbling fluidised bed (BFB) combustors. So, the presence of fuel particles is usually observed mainly near the surface of the fluidised bed. During their thermal conversion, this leads to a release of unburnt pyrolysis products to the freeboard of the combustion chamber. The energy industry is faced with important investment and optimization choices especially for wind power as a fuel of the future, especially for China which boasts the largest installed wind power capacity. This study therefore assessed the potential status of future wind power over China using Coupled Model Intercomparison Project phase 5 (CMIP5) models. Changes in wind power density relative to the current time period 1981−2005 were then analyzed using near-surface wind speeds extrapolated to hub-height of 90 m above ground level. The results showed relatively modest differences between the models and reanalysis. The majority of the models showed any two of location, shape, and size agreement for peak areas albeit models BCC-CSM-1-1-M, BNU-ESM, and CanESM2 tended to overestimate wind speed by up to 2.5 m/s. Lignocellulosic biomass pyrolysis could be an economically feasible option for forest management as it reduces the need to burn litter and helps in fire prevention thus avoiding the release of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. This study characterises wood vinegar (WV) obtained via a continuous fast pyrolysis process in terms of its composition, ageing and herbicidal properties. The aqueous WV fraction had a moisture content of 84% in weight and contained more than 200 compounds. Acetic acid, hydroxyacetaldehyde and hydroxyacetone were the major components. No significant differences were found in WV composition according to the starting material (poplar, pine, pruning litter, forest waste). Over the last few years, there has been an upsurge in the demand for drinking water and for water used in agriculture, industry, and others. Consequently, research is needed to find new technologies and methods for the comprehensive use of geothermal water sources, to provide for new resources of water. The paper shows the results of preliminary recognition in the case of the possible exploitation of the Jurassic aquifer in the Polish lowlands, considering the security of the adjacent layers. The considerations are based on experience in the exploitation of the resources of the Paris basin in France. Initial conclusions point to a high potential for such a solution, also in the Paris basin scientists are considering the use of previously unmanaged Jurassic resources.

The article presents the results of research on the efficiency of photovoltaic (PV) modules cooled with water. The aim of the experiment was to improve the working conditions of solar modules. A temperature decrease was obtained for the PV module by pouring cool tap water onto the upper surface of the modules, either in imitation of rain or as a water film. The power of the cooled and non-cooled devices were then compared. The temperature of the cooled modules dropped to almost 25 °C, whilst the temperature of the non-cooled module was 45 °C. The best results were achieved by cooling modules with a water film, since there were no water splashes, and the continuous cooling of the surface leads to a 20% increase in power. During the test, the non-cooled module attained a maximum power of 105.3 W/m2, compared to 125.5 W/m2 for its cooled counterpart. Energy-saving and energy-recovery strategies represent key factors to achieve operational cost reductions within rail systems’ management tasks. However, in altering service features, they also affect passenger satisfaction. This paper investigates the effect of implementing such measures in the case of rolling stock unavailability. Numerous operational scenarios were explored by analysing different planned headway and rolling stock configurations. 50 m3 of legacy liquid radioactive waste at the Saakadze site in Georgia was treated using a modular type facility with apparatuses encased in three metallic 200 L drums using as purification method the sorption/ion exchange technology. The main contaminant of water in the underground tank was the long-lived radionuclide 226Ra. The casing of processing equipment enabled an effective conditioning of all secondary waste at the end of treatment campaign which resulted in the fully purified water stored on site for further reuse or discharge, and three 200 L metallic drums with cemented radioactive waste which are currently safely stored.

This study investigated the cytotoxicity, anti-obesity and anti-diabetic potentials of blanched, aqueous and ethanol extracts of Heteromorpha arborescens (Spreng.) Cham leaves. The results revealed that both ethanol and aqueous extracts exhibited considerable inhibition against α-glucosidase (IC50 of 627.29 ± 4.62 µg/mL and 576.46 ± 3.21 µg/mL respectively), while the blanched extract showed weak α-glucosidase inhibition (IC50; 855.38 ± 4.29 µg/mL) and the aqueous extract showed the best α-amylase inhibition (IC50; 583.74 ± 5.87 µg/mL). However, weak α-amylase inhibition was observed in the ethanol (IC50; 724.60 ± 4.33 µg/mL) and blanched extracts (IC50; 791.63 ± 3.76 µg/mL). The toxicity of the extracts is indicated by LC50 values as 154.75 µg/mL, 125 µg/mL and 90.58 µg/mL for ethanol, aqueous and blanched extracts respectively, indicating the blanched extract to be the most toxic. This work aimed at further studying the activation mechanisms based on the char structures evolution by operando experimental method. Activation treatment process (from 50 °C to 800 °C and then held for 3 h) was divided into six typical stages (S1−S6) and consisted of carbonization process (S1−S4) and effective activation process (S4−S6). During the carbonization process, the specific capacitance only increased from 0.2 F/g to 12.4 F/g, aromatic ring systems and alkyl-aryl C-C bonds generated, S 2p3/2 (sulphide bridge) was mainly gradually consumed. During the effective activation process, the specific capacitance hugely increased from 12.4 F/g to 112.5 F/g, aromatic ring systems and alkyl-aryl C-C bonds turned to ordered graphitic char. Microbiome Associated with Slovak Traditional Ewe’s Milk Lump Cheese

Worldwide consumers increasingly demand traditional/local products, to which those made from ewe’s milk belong. In Slovakia, dairy products made from ewe’s milk have a long tradition. A total of seventeen farmhouse fresh ewe’s milk lump cheeses from various local farm producers in central Slovakia were sampled at farms and then analyzed. Based on the sequencing data analysis, the phylum Firmicutes dominated (60.92%) in ewe’s lump cheeses, followed with the phylum Proteobacteria (38.23%), Actinobacteria (0.38%) and Bacteroidetes (0.35%). The phylum Firmicutes was represented by six genera, among which the highest amount possessed the genus Streptococcus (41.13%) followed with the genus Lactococcus (8.54%), Fructobacillus (3.91%), Enterococcus (3.18%), Staphylococcus (1.80%) and the genus Brochotrix (0.08%). Influence of Cellulose Characteristics on Pyrolysis Suitability

Cellulose is the most abundant component of biomass and the one that requires the most activation energy (Ea) for pyrolysis. In this study, the dependence of Ea on the intrinsic cellulose characteristics, such as the degree of polymerization (DP), crystallinity, and crystal size, was studied in different cellulose samples, including samples from Eucalyptus globulus, Ulmus minor, Linun usitatissimum, Olea europaea, Robinia pseudoacacia, and Populus alba. Then, to describe the pyrolytic degradation of cellulose, the Ozawa−Flynn−Wall kinetic method was the most appropriate among the isoconversional models studied. An acceptable quadratic relationship of R2 > 0.9 between the Ea values of the different cellulose samples with their corresponding DP, crystallinity index, and crystal size values was found.
