Assessing the Performance of Sustainable Development Goals of EU Countries: Hard and Soft Data Integration

The European Union (EU) energy policy for sustainable development has been the topic of continuous debate, research, and analysis, which frequently focused on objectives and the evaluation of quantitative and qualitative performance. Different approaches can be used for the assessment of sustainable development goals. The authors of the article conducted a literature review of relevant research papers dated 2016−2020. The most common are quantitative methods based on hard data. Some qualitative studies based on soft data are also available but rare. This article proposes hybrid Rough Set Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) and Rough Set Network DEA models that integrate both approaches. Charging a group of series-connected batteries of a PV-battery hybrid system exhibits an imbalance issue. Such imbalance has severe consequences on the battery activation function and the maintenance cost of the entire system. Therefore, this paper proposes an active battery balancing technique for a PV-battery integrated system to improve its performance and lifespan. Battery state of charge (SOC) estimation based on the backpropagation neural network (BPNN) technique is utilized to check the charge condition of the storage system. The developed battery management system (BMS) receives the SOC estimation of the individual batteries and issues control signal to the DC/DC Buck-boost converter to balance the charge status of the connected group of batteries. This study describes the development of a multifunctional solar system designed for implementation in some communities in the Meseta Purepecha, Michoacan, Mexico. The multifunctional solar system device—called T’imani (in the Purepecha language)— consists of two modules designed for domestic use: one for cooking food, the other for heating water. The thermal characterization is based on the use of standardized tests for both modules. The parameters obtained indicate that use device is suitable for in the conditions of solar resources in this region. Additionally, a pilot test was carried out to implement some devices that show favorable preliminary results for domestic use. Effects of Ammonia Stripping and Other Physico-Chemical Pretreatments on Anaerobic Digestion of Swine Wastewater

In order to overcome anaerobic digestion (AD) inhibition due to the large nitrogen content of swine wastewater (SW), air stripping (AS) and other chemical and physical pretreatments were applied on raw SW before AD. The efficiency of these pretreatments on both ammonia removal—recovering ammonia salts to be used as fertilizers in agriculture—and the increase of methane production were assessed in batch tests. Yokeless Axial Flux Surface-Mounted Permanent Magnets Machine Rotor Parameters Influence on Torque and Back-Emf

The paper presents the results of a 3D FEA simulations series of a dual air gap Axial Flux (AF) electric machine with Surface-Mounted Permanent magnets (SPM) with parameterized rotor geometry. Pole number and pole span influence on back-emf, as well as cogging and ideal electromagnetic torques angular characteristics were investigated for each model with the common segmented yokeless stator with concentric windings. Synchronous and BLDC drives supply were used to estimate back-emf distortion. Ideal torque ripple and cogging torque spectra were analyzed. It was concluded that the number of poles closer to the number of slots with ~0.8 pole span tends to yield good torque density with the lowest cogging torque, back-emf distortion and ideal torque ripple.

On average, during one campaign, over 12,000 tons of carbonation lime mud is obtained in the operation of one sugar production plant. It is stored in prisms, which negatively affects the environment. The chemical properties of carbonation lime mud allow using it as a soil improver. This article presents the results of research into the development of carbonation lime mud disposal technology and its management. The chemical composition and physical properties of waste were determined. It has been proposed to use carbonation lime mud as the basic raw material in the production of mineral−organic fertilizers. The paper firstly summarizes a simple analytical model of the air gap flux-density distribution for isotropic permanent magnet (PM) synchronous machines, in the presence of static eccentricity. The model was proposed by the authors in a previous paper and is based on an efficacious analytical expression of the variable length of air gap magnetic field lines which occur in eccentric brushless machines with surface-mounted permanent magnets. The approximate expression of the air gap field makes it possible to achieve a mathematical model with concentrated parameters close to that of a PM machine without eccentricity. The expression of the armature voltages and electromagnetic torque are found, also with reference to steady-state operating conditions at fixed rotor speed and impressed currents.
