Cultivation of Autochthonous Microalgae for Biomass Feedstock: Growth Curves and Biomass Characterization for Their Use in Biorefinery Products
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: autochthonous microalgae, Biofuels, biomass production, biorefinery, culture medium.
In this work, the biomass productivity for biorefinery products and growth curves of three autochthonous microalgae collected in different reservoirs (“Scenedesmus sp.” (SSP), mixture of Scenedesmus sp., Chlorella minutissima, Chlorellas sp. and Nannochloropsis sp. named “La Orden” (LO) consortium and Chlorella minutissima named “Charca Brovales” (CB) consortium) were studied in a 5.5 L column laboratory photobioreactor. Two different culture media, Arnon culture (AM) and an agriculture fertilizer-based liquid medium (FM), have been used to evaluate the growth effect of the microalgae; it was found that the medium has a clear effect on the biomass productivity and growth rate, which ranged between 0.26−0.498 g L−1 d−1 and 0.288−0.864 d−1, respectively. In general, the elemental analysis and higher heating value of microalgae biomass for the three species were independent of the culture medium used for its growth, while their lipids and sugars content depended upon the species type... Integrated Motor Drive: Mass and Volume Optimization of the Motor with an Integrated Filter Inductor
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: capacitor, filter branch windings, inductor, integrated motor, motor branch windings and aerospace applications, passive components.
The present trend of aerospace industries is being shifted towards a “More Electric Aircraft” system which needs to be high power dense. For this purpose, the integration technologies have gained massive interest, providing the benefits of reduced losses, weight, volume and cost. In this article, the integration concept of a passive filter inductor is presented for a permanent magnet synchronous motor. The integrated motor eliminates the need of an external inductor, thus, eliminates the added inductor losses, mass, volume and cost associated with it. The motor utilizes its’s inherent inductance to use it as a filter inductor instead of implementing a discrete inductor that is commonly placed between inverter and the motor terminals. Optimization study is carried out, where the filter branch windings are tapped, in terms of improving mass and volume and performance parameters such as power losses and torque ripple. From the optimization study, the motor with minimum weight and volume i... [more]

A Novel Control Approach to Hybrid Multilevel Inverter for High-Power Applications
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: hybrid multilevel inverter, model predictive control (MPC), multilevel inverter (MLI).
This paper proposes a hybrid control scheme for a newly devised hybrid multilevel inverter (HMLI) topology. The circuit configuration of HMLI is comprised of a cascaded converter module (CCM), connected in series with an H-bridge converter. Initially, a finite set model predictive control (FS-MPC) is adopted as a control scheme, and theoretical analysis is carried out in MATLAB/Simulink. Later, in the real-time implementation of the HMLI topology, a hybrid control scheme which is a variant of the FS-MPC method has been proposed. The proposed control method is computationally efficient and therefore has been employed to the HMLI topology to mitigate the high-frequency switching limitation of the conventional MPC. Moreover, a comparative analysis is carried to illustrate the advantages of the proposed work that includes low switching losses, higher efficiency, and improved total harmonic distortion (THD) in output current. The inverter topology and stability of the proposed control metho... [more]

Mapping of Meteorological Observations over the Island of Ireland to Enhance the Understanding and Prediction of Rain Erosion in Wind Turbine Blades
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: erosion, humidity, kinetic energy, leading edge, pH, rain, salt, temperature, wind turbine blade.
Leading edge erosion is becoming increasingly important as wind turbine size and rainfall are predicted to increase. Understanding environmental conditions is key for laboratory testing, maintenance schedules and lifetime estimations to be improved, which in turn could reduce costs. This paper uses weather data in conjunction with a rain texture model and wind turbine RPM curve to predict and characterise rain erosion conditions across Ireland during rainfall events in terms of droplet size, temperature, humidity and chemical composition, as well as the relative erosivity, in terms of number of annual impacts and kinetic energy, as well as seasonal variations in these properties. Using a linear regression, the total annual kinetic energy, mean temperature and the mean humidity during impact are mapped geospatially. The results indicate that the west coast of Ireland and elevated regions are more erosive with higher kinetic energy. During rain events, northern regions tend to have lower... [more]

Improvement of Mathematical Model for Sedimentation Process
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: block-pulse operational matrix, fractional-order integro-differential equation, laplace transform, Mittag–Leffler function, particle sedimentation, resistance force.
In this article, the fractional-order differential equation of particle sedimentation was obtained. It considers the Basset force’s fractional origin and contains the Riemann−Liouville fractional integral rewritten as a Grunwald−Letnikov derivative. As a result, the general solution of the proposed fractional-order differential equation was found analytically. The belonging of this solution to the real range of values was strictly theoretically proven. The obtained solution was validated on a particular analytical case study. In addition, it was proven numerically with the approach based on the S-approximation method using the block-pulse operational matrix. The proposed mathematical model can be applied for modeling the processes of fine particles sedimentation in liquids, aerosol deposition in gas flows, and particle deposition in gas-dispersed systems.

Technical Limits of Passivity-Based Control Gains for a Single-Phase Voltage Source Inverter
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: control law, non-linear load, passivity-based control, voltage source inverter.
Passivity-based control (PBC) seems to be predicted for the control algorithms in the voltage source inverters (VSI) for voltage backup systems. This paper presents limitations of the improved (IPBC) version of the PBC (directly measuring the output voltage) maximum voltage and current gains. In a microprocessor-controlled inverter, these depend on the PWM modulator dynamic properties, the switching frequency, the modulation index value (avoiding modulator saturation and enabling the rapid increase of the filter inductor current), and the parameters of the VSI output filter. A single switching period delay of the digital PWM modulator was considered in the theoretical calculations based on a discrete inverter model. The simulations for the standard nonlinear rectifier RC load enabled the initial adjustment of the IPBC border gains, which depended on the switching frequency. Some small harmonics oscillations of the output voltage were acceptable for the test rectifier RC load or dynamic... [more]

Optimizing Energy Consumption in Internal Transportation Using Dynamic Transportation Vehicles Assignment Model: Case Study in Printing Company
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: energy consumption, heterogeneous fleet, internal transportation system, Optimization.
Energy costs account for a significant proportion of total costs in production systems. Since energy is becoming an increasingly expensive resource, therefore, it is critical to consume it as efficiently as possible. Focusing on energy efficiency is also important in terms of reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and the effects of other pollutants on the environment. One of the possible ways for businesses to reduce energy consumption is to use available transportation means as efficiently as possible. In the operational phase, this can be achieved by reducing unnecessary transport, selecting the most efficient delivery routes, and by optimized assignment of available vehicles to transportation orders. We present in this article a novel dynamic assignment of transportation orders to fleet with energy minimization criterion in internal transport system of a printing company. The novelty of the proposed model is that, in contrast to most existing models, it can handle a heterogeneous... [more]

Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: bioethanol, feedstock, regional distribution, yield.
Bioethanol will play a significant role in energy structure adjustment and greenhouse gas mitigation in the future, especially in the transport sector. As bioethanol production with grain crops may become obsolete due to food security concerns, the Chinese government has advocated the development of non-grain bioethanol. According to the current actual situation of bioethanol development and China’s Liquid Biofuel Development Roadmap, we defined three stages of bioethanol development. We focused on the assessment of bioethanol feedstock resources and bioethanol yield potential in different stages using a comprehensive evaluation system integrating statistical methods, crop growth process models, and geographic information system (GIS) techniques. The considered feedstocks included corn, sweet sorghum, cassava, switchgrass, crop straw, and forest residues. The spatial−temporal characteristics of the regional bioethanol distribution were discussed. The results indicate that the total res... [more]

Economic Dispatch of CHP Units through District Heating Network’s Demand-Side Management
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: CHP unit, consumption, demand, demand-side management, district heating, economic dispatch, efficiency, electrical and heat load, optimisation.
Optimisation of heat and electrical load distribution, where the objective function is the maximum efficiency of the CHP unit for a given load range, can be done considering the limitations of electrical power and the heat load. Simulating a real CHP unit with a district heating network shows that demand-side management can improve the overall economic efficiency of the CHP plant and increase the unit’s operating range in the electricity spot market. Economic dispatch makes it possible to determine a reasonable additional increase in the electric power of the CHP unit, and to optimise the supply temperature and mass flow of the district heating network. The results obtained and the analysis performed indicate that the proposed methodology provides logical results and can be used to calculate the efficiency indicators of the cogeneration of electrical and thermal energy. The problem of optimising the operating mode of the CHP unit was solved, which allows us to determine the optimal add... [more]

Improvement of the Combustion Completeness of Hydrogen Jet Flames within a Mesoscale Tube under Zero Gravity
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: air entrainment ratio, combustion efficiency, flame shape, flame tip opening, micro-jet flame.
Microjet hydrogen flames can be directly used as micro heat sources or can be applied in micro propulsion systems. In our previous study, under zero gravity and without an active air supply, the combustion completeness of hydrogen jet flames within a mesoscale tube with an inner diameter of 5 mm was very low. In this study, we were dedicated to improving the combustion efficiency by using a convergent nozzle (tilt angle was around 68°) instead of the previous straight one, and the exit diameter was 0.8 or 0.4 mm. The numerical results demonstrate that the maximum combustion efficiency in the case of d= 0.8 mm was only around 15%; however, the peak value for the case of d = 0.4 mm was around 36%. This happened because with d = 0.4 mm, the fuel jet velocity was around four times that of the d = 0.8 mm case. Hence, the negative pressure in the combustor of d = 0.4 mm decreased to a much lower level compared to that of d = 0.8 mm, which led to an enhancement of the air entrainment ratio. H... [more]

Sensorless Control of Voltage Peaks in Class-E Single-Ended Resonant Inverter for Induction Heating Rice Cooker
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: cooker, heating, induction, resonant inverters, resonant voltage control, sensorless control.
Single-ended (SE) resonant inverters are widely used as power converters for high-pressure rice cooker induction, with 1200 V insulated-gate bipolar transistors (IGBTs) being used as switching devices for kW-class products. When voltage fluctuations occur at the input stage of an SE resonant inverter, the resonant voltage applied to the IGBT can be directly affected, potentially exceeding the breakdown voltage of the IGBT, resulting in its failure. Consequently, the resonant voltage should be limited to below a safety threshold—hardware resonant voltage limiting methods are generally used to do so. This paper proposes a sensorless resonant voltage control method that limits the increase in the resonant voltage caused by overvoltage or supply voltage fluctuations. By calculating and predicting the resonance voltage through the analysis of the resonance circuit, the resonance voltage is controlled not to exceed the breakdown voltage of the IGBT. The experimental results of a 1.35 kW SE r... [more]

Low-Cost Thermal Camera-Based Counting Occupancy Meter Facilitating Energy Saving in Smart Buildings
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: air conditioning, building management systems, deep learning, heating, thermal imaging.
Using passive infrared sensors is a well-established technique of presence monitoring. While it can significantly reduce energy consumption, more savings can be made when utilising more modern sensor solutions coupled with machine learning algorithms. This paper proposes an improved method of presence monitoring, which can accurately derive the number of people in the area supervised with a low-cost and low-energy thermal imaging sensor. The method utilises U-Net-like convolutional neural network architecture and has a low parameter count, and therefore can be used in embedded scenarios. Instead of providing simple, binary information, it learns to estimate the occupancy density function with the person count and approximate location, allowing the system to become considerably more flexible. The tests show that the method compares favourably to the state of the art solutions, achieving significantly better results.

Design Procedure to Convert a Maximum Power Point Tracking Algorithm into a Loop Control System
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: Algorithms, control loops, energy harvesting, MPPT, photovoltaic energy.
This paper presents a novel complete design procedure to convert a maximum power point tracking (MPPT) algorithm into a control system. The MPPT algorithm can be tuned by employing any control system design. In this paper, we adopted Bode diagrams using the criteria of module and phase as the power electronics specialists are habituated with such concepts. The MPPT control transfer functions were derived using the average state equations and small-signal analysis. The control loops were derived for power and voltage control loops. The design procedure was applied to the well-known perturb and observe (P&O) and incremental conductance (IC) algorithms, returning the P&O based on PI and IC based on PI algorithms. Such algorithms were evaluated through simulation and experimental results. Additionally, we showed that the proposed design methodology can optimize energy harvesting, allowing algorithms to have outstanding tracking factors (above 99%) and adaptability characteristics.

Heat Transfer Analysis in Supercritical Hydrogen of Decoupled Poisoned Hydrogen Moderator with Non-Uniform Heat Source of Chinese Spallation Neutron Source
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Chinese spallation neutron source, decoupled poisoned hydrogen moderator, non-uniform heat source, numerical simulation, supercritical pressure.
The flow field distribution and thermal properties of supercritical hydrogen are crucial factors affecting the quality of neutrons output from spallation neutron source, which may contribute to the optimization design of the moderator. Several sensitivity studies on affecting heat transfer characteristics of liquid hydrogen inside a moderator were executed, and a choice was made to use a computational fluid dynamics method for numerical simulation. The sensitivity degree of factors affecting the heat transfer characteristics of liquid hydrogen are in sequence of inlet mass flow, beam power and operating pressure. Especially when the beam power is 500 kW (the temperature range of liquid hydrogen is about 20~30 K); where the effect of mass flow rate is remarkable, the cooling effect is best in the range of 60~90 g/s × 394 mm2. Meanwhile, the maximum temperature of liquid hydrogen is close to the bottom recirculation zone due to the influence of the flow field and the heat deposition dist... [more]

A Robust Vector Current Controller with Negative-Sequence Current Capability for Grid-Connected Inverters
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: distributed energy resources, grid-connected inverter, islanding detection, negative-sequence current injection, vector current control.
This paper presents a vector current controller (in the synchronous reference, or the dq, frame) with negative-sequence current injection capability for three-phase grid-connected converters. This capability is desired for the operation of the converter during unbalanced conditions and also for a certain type of islanding detection. The proposed controller first determines the double-frequency current references and then uses a sixth-order two-input two-output proportional-integral-resonance (PIR) structure, which is optimally designed. Compared with the existing similar approaches, the proposed controller has a simpler structure and more robust performance, e.g., against system parameter uncertainties and weak grid conditions. The proposed controller is developed for converters with both the L-type and LCL-type filters. For the LCL-type converter, a suboptimal partial state feedback control is also proposed to achieve robust stability and active damping of resonance poles without requ... [more]

March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: additives, Biomass, combustion, corn cob, kaolin, particulate matter.
Fuel-related measures and modernization of small-scale combustion units has become the focus of attention in the renewable heat generation sector, as a means to promote local biomass utilization and fuel-flexibility while meeting strict environmental legislative requirements. With the aim to mitigate total particulate matter emissions and ash-associated problems characteristic of crop residue combustion, (1) corn cob pellets (with and without kaolin and binder) as well as (2) fuel blends with wood pellets were combusted in a pellet oven under full load. Results show that additivation or fuel blending (e.g., 50 wt. % wood and 50 wt. % corn cob pellets) reduce total particulate and CO-emissions by 48 to 60 wt. % and 64 to 89 wt. %, respectively, in comparison to baseline emissions from non-additivized corn cob pellets. Keywords: context-aware knowledge-base systems, intelligent control, interoperability, semantic reasoning, semantic rule-based systems.
Building management systems (BMSs) are being implemented broadly by industries in recent decades. However, BMSs focus on specific domains, and when installed on the same building, they lack interoperability to work on a centralized user interface. Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: ACOPF, DCOPF, optimal power flow, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, wind power.
Today, the power system operation represents a challenge given the security and reliability requirements. Mathematical models are used to represent and solve operational and planning issues related with electric systems. Specifically, the AC optimal power flow (ACOPF) and the DC optimal power flow (DCOPF) are tools used for operational and planning purposes. The DCOPF versions correspond to lineal versions of the ACOPF. This is due to the fact that the power flow solution is often hard to obtain with the ACOPF considering all constraints. However, the simplifications use only active power without considering reactive power, voltage values and losses on transmission lines, which are crucial factors for power system operation, potentially leading to inaccurate results. This paper develops a detailed formulation for both DCOPF and ACOPF with multiple generation sources to provide a 24-h dispatching in order to compare the differences between the solutions with different scenarios under hi...
