Estimation of Chlorine Concentration in Water Distribution Systems Based on a Genetic Algorithm
April 11, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: chlorine, Genetic Algorithm, hydraulic network, model calibration, Optimization, water quality.
This paper proposes a methodology based on a genetic algorithms (GA) to calibrate the parameters of a chlorine decay model in a water distribution system (WDS). The proposed methodology first contemplates that a GA is implemented using historical measurements of chlorine concentration at some sensed nodes to calibrate the unknown values corresponding to both the bulk and wall reaction coefficients. Once both parameters are estimated, the optimal-fit chlorine decay model is used to predict the decay of chlorine concentration in the water at each node for any concentration input at the pumping station. Then, a second GA-based algorithm is implemented to obtain the minimal chlorine concentration needed at the input to ensure that every node in the system meets the official normativity requirements for free chlorine in a WDS. The proposed methodology performed satisfactorily for a WDS simulated in EPANET with a GA implemented in MATLAB, both for the estimation of the reaction coefficients... [more]

Performance of Biomass and Exopolysaccharide Production from the Medicinal Mushroom Ganoderma lucidum in a New Fabricated Air-L-Shaped Bioreactor (ALSB)
April 11, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: bioprocess optimization, exopolysaccharide, Ganoderma lucidum, smart bioreactor, wall growth.
Conventional stirred-tank bioreactor (STR) designs are optimised for cultures of bacteria but not fungal cultures; therefore, a new Air-L-Shaped Bioreactor (ALSB) was fabricated. The ALSB was designed to eliminate the wall growth and clumping of fungal mycelium in STRs. Ganoderma lucidum was used as a fungal model and its biomass and exopolysaccharide (EPS) production were maximised by optimising the agitation rate, glucose concentration, initial pH, and aeration via response surface methodology (RSM). The ALSB system generated 7.8 g/L of biomass (biomass optimised conditions: 110 rpm, 24 g/L glucose, pH 5.6, and 3 v/v of aeration) and 4.4 g/L of EPS (EPS optimised conditions: 90 rpm, 30 g/L glucose, pH 4, and 2.5 v/v of aeration). In combination, for both optimised conditions, biomass (7.9 g/L) and EPS (4.6 g/L) were produced at 110 rpm, 30 g/L glucose, pH 4, and 3 v/v of aeration with minimal wall growth. The data prove that the ALSB is a blueprint for efficient economical fungal cul... [more]

April 11, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: antibody-based therapy, drug delivery, liposomes, supercritical fluids.
Encapsulation of antibodies represents a significant advance to protect and deliver these therapeutics in a controlled manner, increasing the stability requested to cover the temporal gap between particle production and their administration. Furthermore, using encapsulation, extracellular, cell surface, and intracellular targets can be reached. This work examines the feasibility of encapsulating mouse IgG isotype control antibodies within phosphatidylcholine-based liposomes using a supercritical fluid-based process called SuperLip (Supercritical-assisted Liposome formation). This process allows a continuous production of both nano- and micrometric liposomes with high encapsulation efficiency working under mild operative conditions. The effect of some operative parameters has been studied on liposome mean diameter, particle size distribution, and antibody entrapment efficiency, comparing these data with those collected working with liposomes obtained by the thin-layer hydration techniqu... Vehicle Routing Problem Model with Practicality
April 11, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: automatic driving, cost minimization, forward–backward heuristics, greedy algorithm.
Truck platooning has recently become an essential issue in automatic driving. Though truck platooning can increase safety and reduce fuel consumption and carbon emissions, the practical vehicle routing problem involved in truck platooning has not been sufficiently addressed. Therefore, we design a mixed-integer linear programming model for the routing problem in truck platooning considering the deadline of vehicles, continuous-time units, different fuel reduction rates, traffic congestion avoidance, and heterogeneous vehicles. In addition, a forward−backward heuristic called the “greedy heuristic” is presented for reasonable computation time. To validate the model’s performance, several parameters, such as the percentage of fuel reduction, percentage of detour vehicles, and percentage of platooned links (road segments), are considered. Additionally, various cases are considered with varying fuel reduction rates, traffic flow rates, and time windows.

Molecular Profiling and Optimization Studies for Growth and PHB Production Conditions in Rhodobacter sphaeroides
April 11, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: growth conditions, polyhydroxybutyrate, reactive oxygen species, Rhodobacter.
In the recent climate change regime, industrial demand for renewable materials to replace petroleum-derived polymers continues to rise. Of particular interest is polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) as a substitute for polypropylene. Accumulating evidence indicates that PHB is highly produced as a carbon storage material in various microorganisms. The effects of growth conditions on PHB production have been widely studied in chemolithotrophs, particularly in Rhodobacter. However, the results on PHB production in Rhodobacter have been somewhat inconsistent due to different strains and experimental conditions, and it is currently unclear how diverse environmental factors are linked with PHB production. Here, we report optimized growth conditions for PHB production and show that the growth conditions are closely related to reactive oxygen species (ROS) regulation. PHB accumulates in cells up to approximately 50% at the highest level under dark-aerobic conditions as opposed to light aerobic/anaerobic... [more]

Powertrain Optimization for Electric Buses under Optimal Energy-Efficient Driving
April 11, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: dynamic programming, eco-driving, energy-efficient driving, powertrain optimization, speed profile optimization.
State of the art powertrain optimization compares the energy consumption of different powertrain configurations based on simulations with fixed driving cycles. However, this approach might not be applicable to future vehicles, since speed advisory systems and automated driving functions offer the potential to adapt the speed profile to minimize energy consumption. This study aims to investigate the potential of powertrain optimization with respect to energy consumption under optimal energy-efficient driving for electric buses. The optimal powertrain configurations of the buses under energy-efficient driving and their respective energy consumptions are obtained using powertrain-specific optimized driving cycles and compared with those of human-driven unconnected buses and buses with non-powertrain-specific optimal speed profiles. Based on the results, new trends in the powertrain design of vehicles under energy-efficient driving are derived. The optimized driving cycles are calculated u... [more]

FPAES: A Hybrid Approach for the Optimal Placement and Sizing of Reactive Compensation in Distribution Grids
April 11, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: Capacitor Banks Placement, Exhaustive Search, Flower Pollination Algorithm, hybrid algorithm.
Reactive power compensation with Capacitor Banks (CBs) is one of the most successful approaches used in distribution systems, mainly due to their versatility, long-term acceptance in the power industry, and reduced costs. Most allocation methods, however, lack specific strategies to handle the limited discrete nature of CBs sizes seeking to improve the overall optimization and computational performance. We present an algorithm for the Optimal Placement of Capacitor Banks (OPCB) in distribution systems by means of a hybrid Flower Pollination Algorithm (FPA)−Exhaustive Search (ES) approach. The pollination process itself determines the sets of buses for placement, while CBs sizes and the final fitness values of each pollen are selected after a full-search is conducted in the sizing space. As the sizing phase works on the limited search space of predetermined discrete bank values, the computational effort to find the optimum CB capacity is greatly reduced. Tests were performed on distribu... [more]

Cost Optimization of Wastewater and Septage Treatment Process
April 11, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: cost optimization, septage treatment, vertical flow constructed wetland, wastewater treatment.
Analysis of the current knowledge has revealed the lack of a method for increasing the cost-effectiveness of wastewater and septage treatment in plants overloaded by contamination. This was the premise for undertaking research on the process of septage pre-treatment in a subsurface vertical flow constructed wetland (SS-VF) prior to its input into the biological section of a municipal treatment plant. In previous research the authors have indicated that this allows for a significant reduction in the value of pollution indicators. The objective of this paper is to assess the cost-effectiveness of this process by means of an optimization model. The decision variable was the coefficient of septage stream distribution into the quantity directed to the SS-VF bed in relation to its total quantity. The optimization criterion was the minimization of the expected annual cost of wastewater and septage treatment. Verification of the model has shown that it is reasonable to subject all septage to t... [more]

In communication networks, the volume of traffic, the number of connected devices and users continues to grow. As a result, the energy consumption generated by the communication infrastructure has become an important parameter that needs to be carefully considered and optimized both when designing the network and when operating it in real-time. In this paper, the methodology of calculation of complex parameters of energy consumption for transport telecommunication networks is proposed. Unlike the known techniques, the proposed methodology takes into account heterogeneity and multilayer networks. It also takes into account the energy consumption parameter during the downtime of the network equipment in the process of processing the service data blocks, which is quite an important task for improving the accuracy of energy consumption at the stage of implementing the energy-saving network. We also developed simulation software to estimate and manage the energy consumption of the optical t... [more]

The Integrated Component-System Optimization of a Typical Thermal Management System by Combining Empirical and Heat Current Methods
April 11, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: component-system, empirical correlation, heat current method, integration optimization, thermal management system.
Integration of modeling and optimization of a thermal management system simultaneously depends on heat transfer performance of the components and the topological characteristics of the system. This paper introduces a heat current method to construct the overall heat current layout of a typical double-loop thermal management system. We deduce the system heat transfer matrix as the whole system constraint based on the overall heat current layout. Moreover, we consider the influences of structural and operational parameters on the thermal hydraulic performances of each heat exchanger by combining the empirical correlations of the heat transfer and pressure drop. Finally, the minimum pressure drop is obtained by solving these optimal governing equations derived by the Lagrange multiplier method considering the physical constraints and operational conditions. The optimization results show that the minimum pressure drop reduces about 8.1% with the optimal allocation of mass flow rates of eac... [more]

April 11, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: enhanced bee swarm optimization (EBSO), forecasting, least squares support vector machine (LSSVM), wind power, wind speed.
This paper presents a short-term wind power forecasting model for the next day based on historical marine weather and corresponding wind power output data. Due the large amount of historical marine weather and wind power data, we divided the data into clusters using the data regression (DR) algorithm to get meaningful training data, so as to reduce the number of modeling data and improve the efficiency of computing. The regression model was constructed based on the principle of the least squares support vector machine (LSSVM). We carried out wind speed forecasting for one hour and one day and used the correlation between marine wind speed and the corresponding wind power regression model to realize an indirect wind power forecasting model. Proper parameter settings for LSSVM are important to ensure its efficiency and accuracy. In this paper, we used an enhanced bee swarm optimization (EBSO) to perform the parameter optimization for LSSVM, which not only improved the forecast model avai... [more]

Subject: Optimization
Keywords: energy storage system (ESS), net present value (NPV), Optimization, particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm, railway network, regenerative braking, siting, sizing.
The paper proposes an optimal siting and sizing methodology to design an energy storage system (ESS) for railway lines. The scope is to maximize the economic benefits. The problem of the optimal siting and sizing of an ESS is addressed and solved by a software developed by the authors using the particle swarm algorithm, whose objective function is based on the net present value (NPV). The railway line, using a standard working day timetable, has been simulated in order to estimate the power flow between the trains finding the siting and sizing of electrical substations and storage systems suitable for the railway network. Numerical simulations have been performed to test the methodology by assuming a new-generation of high-performance trains on a 3 kV direct current (d.c.) railway line. The solution found represents the best choice from an economic point of view and which allows less energy to be taken from the primary network.

April 11, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: capacitor placement, DGs, distribution system, faults, Optimization, service restoration, teaching–learning algorithm.
A distribution system becomes the most essential part of a power system as it links the utility and utility customers. Under abnormal conditions of the system, a definitive goal of the utility is to provide continuous power supply to the customers. This demands a fast restoration process and provision of optimal solutions without violating the power system operational constraints. The main objective of the proposed work is to reduce the service restoration cost (SRC) along with the elimination of the out-of-service loads. In addition, this work concentrates on the minimal usage and finding of optimal locations for additional equipment, such as capacitor placement (CP) and distributed generators (DGs). This paper proposes a two-stage strategy, namely, the service restoration phase and optimization phase. The first phase ensures the restoration of the system from the fault condition, and the second phase identifies the optimal solution with reconfiguration, CP, and DG placement. The opti... [more]

Subject: Optimization
Keywords: blockchain, differential evolution, microgrid, Optimization, power loss, reactive power.
The energy market is gradually changing from centralized trading to peer-to-peer trading due to the tremendous increase in a microgrid with green energy resources. When more generating units are included in the microgrid, the possibilities of more reactive power flows exist in the system that leads to high transmission loss which has to be optimized. The reactive power is one of the essential ancillary services in the microgrid towards preserving the voltage in the transmission and distribution line. The major contribution of the paper is towards managing the ancillary service in the distributed energy network economically and technically. This study aims to estimate and optimize the power loss, reactive power, and price management as well. Towards optimization, the self-balanced differential evolution algorithm (SBDE) is used in this study. A distribution system operator is involved in coordinating the sellers and buyers. Flexible Kinetic Energy Release Controllers for a Wind Farm in an Islanding System
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: doubly fed induction generator (DFIG), kinetic energy, load frequency control (LFC), Particle Swarm Optimization, wind farm.
To improve frequency nadir following a disturbance and avoid under-frequency load shedding, two types of flexible kinetic energy release controllers for the doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) are proposed. The basic idea is to release only a small amount of kinetic energy stored at the DFIG in the initial transient period (1−3 s after the disturbance). When the frequency dip exceeds a preset threshold, the amount of kinetic energy released is increased to improve the frequency nadir. To achieve the goal of flexible kinetic energy release, a deactivation function based integral controller is first presented. To further improve the dynamic frequency response under parameter uncertainties and external disturbances, a second flexible kinetic energy release controller is designed using a proportional-integral controller, with the gains being adapted in real-time with the particle swarm optimization algorithm. Based on the MATLAB/SIMULINK simulation results for a local power system, it is... [more]

Robust Optimal Operation Strategy for a Hybrid Energy System Based on Gas-Fired Unit, Power-to-Gas Facility and Wind Power in Energy Markets
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: day-ahead energy market clearing, highly flexible gas-fired power units (GFUs), integrated optimal bidding strategy, power-to-gas conversion technology (P2G), robust optimization approach, wind power unit (WPU).
Gas-fired power units (GFUs) are the best technology in recent years due to lower natural gas prices, higher energy transformation performance, and lower CO2 emission, as compared to the conventional power units (CPUs). A permanent storage facility called power-to-gas (P2G) technology can provide adaptation of ever-increasing renewable energy sources (RESs) fluctuations in power system operations, as well as reduce dependency to buy natural gas from the gas network. High investment and utilization expenditures of state-of-the-art P2G technology do not lead to economically effective operation individually. Therefore, in the present paper, an integrated GFUs-P2G-wind power unit (WPU) system is proposed to determine its optimal bidding strategy in the day-ahead energy market. A robust optimization approach is also taken into account to accommodate the proposed bidding strategy within the electricity price uncertainty environment. Heuristic Optimization of Overloading Due to Electric Vehicles in a Low Voltage Grid
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: electric vehicles, heuristic, low voltage, network, Optimization.
It is important to understand the effect of increasing electric vehicles (EV) penetrations on the existing electricity transmission infrastructure and to find ways to mitigate it. While, the easiest solution is to opt for equipment upgrades, the potential for reducing overloading, in terms of voltage drops, and line loading by way of optimization of the locations at which EVs can charge, is significant. To investigate this, a heuristic optimization approach is proposed to optimize EV charging locations within one feeder, while minimizing nodal voltage drops, cable loading and overall cable losses. The optimization approach is compared to typical unoptimized results of a monte-carlo analysis. The results show a reduction in peak line loading in a typical benchmark 0.4 kV by up to 10%. Further results show an increase in voltage available at different nodes by up to 7 V in the worst case and 1.5 V on average. Biogas Plant Exploitation in a Middle-Sized Dairy Farm in Poland: Energetic and Economic Aspects
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: biogas plant, energetic optimization, manure, substrates, wheat straw.
Although cow manure is a valuable natural fertilizer, it is also a source of extreme greenhouse gas emissions, mainly methane. For this reason, this study aims to determine the impact of investments in a biogas plant on the energy and economic aspects of the operation of a dairy farm. A farm with a breeding size of 600 livestock units (LSU) was adopted for the analysis. In order to reach the paper’s aim, the analysis of two different scenarios of dairy farm functioning (conventional−only milk production, and modern−with biogas plant exploitation) was conducted. The analysis showed that the investment in biogas plant operations at a dairy farm and in using cow manure as one of the main substrates is a more profitable scenario compared to traditional dairy farming. Taking into account the actual Polish subsidies for electricity produced by small biogas plants, the scenario with a functioning biogas plant with a capacity of 500 kW brings €332,000/a more profit compared to the conventional... April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: conditional value at risk, improved multi-layer artificial bee colony algorithm, risk-based hybrid demand response, two-stage optimization, uncertainties.
Owing to the increasing utilization of renewable energy resources, distributed energy resources (DERs) become inevitably uncertain, and microgrid operators have difficulty in operating the power systems because of this uncertainty. In this study, we propose a two-stage optimization approach with a hybrid demand response program (DRP) considering a risk index for microgrids (MGs) under uncertainty. The risk-based hybrid DRP is presented to reduce both operational costs and uncertainty effect using demand response elasticity. The problem is formulated as a two-stage optimization that considers not only the expected operation costs but also risk expense of uncertainty. To address the optimization problem, an improved multi-layer artificial bee colony (IML-ABC) is incorporated into the MG operation. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is demonstrated through a numerical analysis based on a typical low-voltage grid-connected MG. As a result, the proposed approach can reduce the opera...
