Breakup Processes and Droplet Characteristics of Liquid Jets Injected into Low-Speed Air Crossflow
August 29, 2020 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: breakup regime, droplet size, droplet velocity, liquid jet, PDA, primary breakup
The breakup processes and droplet characteristics of a liquid jet injected into a low-speed air crossflow in the finite space were experimentally investigated. The liquid jet breakup processes were recorded by high-speed photography, and phase-Doppler anemometry (PDA) was employed to measure the droplet sizes and droplet velocities. Through the instantaneous image observation, the liquid jet breakup mode could be divided into bump breakup, arcade breakup and bag breakup modes, and the experimental regime map of primary breakup processes was summarized. The transition boundaries between different breakup modes were found. The gas Weber number (Weg) could be considered as the most sensitive dimensionless parameter for the breakup mode. There was a Weg transition point, and droplet size distribution was able to change from the oblique-I-type to the C-type with an increase in Weg. The liquid jet Weber number (Wej) had little effect on droplet size distribution, and droplet size was in the... [more]

Keywords: additive manufacturing, corrosion resistance, dental prosthetic restorations, Dentistry 4.0, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscope, in-vitro tests, metallography, selective laser sintering, structural X-ray analysis, tensile and bending strength, Ti6Al4V dental alloy, tribological tests
This paper presents a comparison of the impact of milling technology in the computer numerically controlled (CNC) machining centre and selective laser sintering (SLS) and on the structure and properties of solid Ti6Al4V alloy. It has been shown that even small changes in technological conditions in the SLS manufacturing variant significantly affect changes from two to nearly two and a half times in tensile and bending strengths. Both the tensile and bending strength obtained in the most favourable manufacturing variant by the SLS method is over 25% higher than in the case of cast materials subsequently processed by milling. Plug-and-play SLS conditions provide about 60% of the possibilities. Structural, tribological and electrochemical tests were carried out. In vitro biological tests using osteoblasts confirm the good tendency for the proliferation of live cells on the substrate manufactured under the most favourable SLS conditions. The use of SLS additive technology for the manufactu... [more]

Effects of the Microbubble Generation Mode on Hydrodynamic Parameters in Gas−Liquid Bubble Columns
August 29, 2020 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: ERT, foam gun, microbubble, optical fiber probe, sintered plate
The hydrodynamics parameters of microbubbles in a bubble column were studied in an air−water system with a range of superficial gas velocity from 0.013 to 0.100 m/s using a differential pressure transmitter, double probe optical fiber probe, and electrical resistance tomography (ERT) technique. Two kinds of microbubble generators (foam gun, sintered plate) were used to generate microbubbles in the bubble column with a diameter of 90 mm, and to compare the effects of different foaming methods on the hydrodynamics parameters in the bubble column. The hydrodynamic behavior of the homogeneous regime and the transition regime was also studied. The results show that, by changing the microbubble-generating device, the hydrodynamic parameters in the column are changed, and both microbubble-generating devices can obtain a higher gas holdup and a narrower chord length distribution. When the foam gun is used as the gas distributor, a higher gas holdup and a narrower average bubble chord length ca... [more]

Research on the Pressure Dropin Horizontal Pneumatic Conveying for Large Coal Particles
August 5, 2020 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: DPM, Euler–Lagrange approach, large coal particles, pneumatic conveying, pressure drop
As a type of airtight conveying mode, pneumatic conveying has the advantages of environmental friendliness and conveying without dust overflow. The application of the pneumatic conveying system in the field of coal particle conveying can avoid direct contact between coal particles and the atmosphere, which helps to reduce the concentration of air dust and improve environmental quality in coal production and coal consumption enterprises. In order to predict pressure drop in the pipe during the horizontal pneumatic conveying of large coal particles, the Lagrangian coupling method and DPM (discrete particle model) simulation model was used in this paper. Based on the comparison of the experimental results, the feasibility of the simulation was verified and the pressure drop in the pipe was simulated. The simulation results show that when the flow velocity is small, the simulation results of the DPM model are quite different from that of the experiment. When the flow velocity is large, the... The Effect of Temperature on the Biosorption of Dyes from Aqueous Solutions
August 5, 2020 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: biosorption, dye, temperature, Wastewater
This work is a review of scientific papers on the influence of temperature (T) on the biosorption of various dyes from aqueous solutions and wastewaters. The dyeing process of textiles is usually carried out at high temperatures, and therefore, the wastewater generated there when entering the treatment plant may still be hot. Hence, depending on the climatic conditions of a given region, the biosorption method used for their purification may occur at various temperatures. Most of the papers clearly stated the positive influence of T on biosorption, generally indicating the chemical nature of this process. At the same time, substantial number of authors confirmed the positive effect of T on the biosorption with an initial T-rise from approximately 20 °C to about 30−40 °C range; conversely, at higher temperatures, they indicated a decrease in the biosorption efficiency. Additionally, many authors clearly implied the negative impact of T on the biosorption parameters. They generally envis... [more]

Comparison of Steel Manufacturing Off-Gas Utilization Methods via Life Cycle Analysis
July 31, 2020 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: blast furnace gas, coke oven gas, combined cycle power plant, Life Cycle Analysis, methanol production
This study utilizes life cycle analysis to compare three steel manufacturing off-gas utilization systems: a status quo system, which produces electricity via a low-pressure steam turbine; a combined cycle power plant (CCPP) system, which produces electricity using gas and steam turbines; and a methanol (MeOH) system, which converts coke oven gas (COG) and blast furnace gas (BFG) into MeOH (CBMeOH). This research seeks to compare the environmental impacts of each system based on equivalent raw material inputs. Since the systems have different products, system expansion is used to ensure that they have the same outputs and are therefore comparable. The system boundary consists of a combination of cradle-to-gate and gate-to-gate boundaries. The environmental effects of each system are compared at five locations—Ontario, the USA, Finland, Mexico, and China—using TRACI, CML-IA baseline, ReCiPe2016, and IMPACT2002+ in SimaPro v9. Extensional Magnetorheology as a Tool for Optimizing the Formulation of Ferrofluids in Oil-Spill Clean-Up Processes
July 17, 2020 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: extensional magneto-rheology, ferrofluids, magnetic clean-up process, nanofluids, oil-spills
In this study, we propose a new way of optimising the formulation of ferrofluids for oil-spill clean-up processes, based on the rheological behaviour under extensional flow and magnetic fields. Different commercial ferrofluids (FFs), consisting of a set of six ferrofluids with different magnetic saturation and particle concentration, were characterised in a Capillary Break-Up Extensional Rheometer (CaBER) equipped with two magnetorheological cells that allow imposing a homogeneous and tunable magnetic field either parallel or perpendicular to the flow direction. The filament thinning process with different intensities and orientation of the magnetic field with respect to the flow direction was analysed, and the results showed that the perpendicular configuration did not have a significant effect on the behaviour of the ferrofluids, as in shear magnetorheometry. However, the parallel configuration allowed to determine that the formulation of ferrofluids for oil-spill cleaning processes... [more]

We have developed a novel microwave (MW) soldering system using a cylindrical single-mode TM110 MW cavity that spatially separates the electric fields at the top and bottom of the cavity and the magnetic field at the center of the cavity. This MW reactor system automatically detects the suitable resonance frequency and provides the optimum MW irradiation conditions in the cylindrical cavity via a power feedback loop. Furthermore, we investigated the temperature properties of electrodes by MW heating with the simulation of a magnetic field in the TM110 cavity toward the mounting of electronic components by MW heating. We also developed a short-time melting technology for solder paste on polyimide substrate using MW heating and succeeded in mounting a temperature sensor using the novel MW heating system without damaging the electronic components, electronic circuits, and the substrate.

Keywords: adsorption isotherms, Alizarin Red S, chromium, cyclic process, dyes, wool
Alizarin red S (ARS) removal from wastewater using sheep wool as adsorbent was investigated. The influence of contact time, pH, adsorbent dosage, initial ARS concentration and temperature was studied. Optimum values were: pH = 2.0, contact time = 90 min, adsorbent dosage = 8.0 g/L. Removal of ARS under these conditions was 93.2%. Adsorption data at 25.0 °C and 90 min contact time were fitted to the Freundlich and Langmuir isotherms. R2 values were 0.9943 and 0.9662, respectively. Raising the temperature to 50.0 °C had no effect on ARS removal. Free wool and wool loaded with ARS were characterized by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR). ARS loaded wool was used as adsorbent for removal of Cr(VI) from industrial wastewater. ARS adsorbed on wool underwent oxidation, accompanied by a simultaneous reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III). The results hold promise for wool as adsorbent of organic pollutants from wastewater, in addition to substantial self-regeneration through reduction of t... [more]

Subject: Other
Keywords: bentonite, recycling, solid waste management, steelmaking, sustainable materials
Steelmaking is an energy-intensive process that generates considerable amounts of by-products and wastes, which often pose major environmental and economic challenges to the steel-making industry. One of these by-products is steel dust that is produced during the separation of impurities in the smelting and refining of metals in steel-making furnaces. In this study, electric arc furnace (EAF) dust has been evaluated as a potential, low-cost additive to increase the viscosity and weight of drilling muds. Currently, the cost of drilling operations typically accounts for 50 to 80% of the exploration costs and about 30 to 80% of the subsequent field development costs. Utilization of steelmaking waste in drilling fluids formulations is aimed to produce new and optimized water-based drilling formulations, which is expected to reduce the amount of bentonite and other viscosifier additives used in the drilling formulations. The results showed that in a typical water-based drilling fluid of 8.6... [more]

Large electric superconducting machines are being sought to solve emissions challenges in aircraft and provide a solution to >12 MW wind turbine electricity generation. Superconducting motors with only high temperature superconducting (HTS) armatures can offer advantages of high reliability, high power density, and high efficiency compared with conventional superconducting motors. In this paper, a novel HTS squirrel-cage induction motor is proposed for high speed operation, which adopts the structure of HTS windings with a certain inclination angle in the stator slots. Due to the limitation of curvature radius of superconducting tapes, the pitch of HTS windings can be only set to 1 and adopt the short pitch arrangement structure, which such design details of the HTS motor would ensure the superconducting coils can undertake larger current and reduce AC losses. Energy retrofitting of the housing stock is a priority in current regulatory standards as a means of reducing energy consumption. The strategies used in retrofitting housing stock ought to respond both to regulatory conditions and to two challenges: specific climate conditions and the improvement of comfort conditions. These issues are especially important in the warmer regions of the Mediterranean, and will be even more so in the future due to climate change. The aim of this paper is to assess the influence that the improvement of facade insulation and the use of ventilation have on the existing housing stock. To do so, an energy evaluation is conducted using on-site monitoring of free-running conditions in test cells reproducing a residential room, both in current condition and with the retrofitted proposal, in Seville (Spain). The results obtained show limited improvement of the facade insulation when outdoor temperatures are high, as well as the influence of ventilation, mainly noc... [more]

High-quality supercritical CO₂ (sCO₂) foam as a fracturing fluid is considered ideal for fracturing shale gas reservoirs. The apparent viscosity of the fracturing fluid holds an important role and governs the efficiency of the fracturing process. In this study, the viscosity of sCO₂ foam and its empirical correlations are presented as a function of temperature, pressure, and shear rate. A series of experiments were performed to investigate the effect of temperature, pressure, and shear rate on the apparent viscosity of sCO₂ foam generated by a widely used mixed surfactant system. An advanced high pressure, high temperature (HPHT) foam rheometer was used to measure the apparent viscosity of the foam over a wide range of reservoir temperatures (40⁻120 °C), pressures (1000⁻2500 psi), and shear rates (10⁻500 s−1). Current atmospheric correction methods for breakdown and withstand voltages in long air-gap configurations show deviations in comparison to measurement data when applied to correct for unusual or atypical atmospheric conditions (i.e., altitudes above 2000 m a.s.l.). The corresponding standards IEC 60060 and IEC 60071 show inconsistencies, although both are being based upon the same measurements and empirical models.
