March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: Artificial Neural Network, energy clusters, Energy Efficiency, Energy Flexible Building Clusters, environmental impact, urban building energy modeling
The development of energy-efficient buildings and sustainable energy supply systems is an obligatory undertaking towards a more sustainable future. To protect the natural environment, the modernization of urban infrastructure is indisputably important, possible to achieve considering numerous buildings as a group, i.e., Building Energy Cluster (BEC). The urban planning process evaluates multiple complex criteria to select the most profitable scenario in terms of energy consumption, environmental protection, or financial profitability. Thus, Urban Building Energy Modelling (UBEM) is presently a popular approach applied for studies towards the development of sustainable cities. Today’s UBEM tools use various calculation methods and approaches, as well as include different assumptions and limitations. While there are several popular and valuable software for UBEM, there is still no such tool for analyses of the Polish residential stock. In this work an overview on the home-developed tool... [more]

The Health Impact and External Cost of Electricity Production
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: emissions, energy scenarios, health impact, models, power sector
The use of fossil fuels, which still dominate global primary energy consumption, results not only in emissions of greenhouse gas but also in emissions of pollutants such as SO2, NOx, and PM. Damage caused by air pollution can be expressed in monetary terms in the form of external costs to society. The goal of this paper is to answer the following questions: How much will the energy sector’s emissions change as a result of decarbonization? What is the estimated level of external costs related to human health in future energy scenarios? How large are the estimated external costs compared to the planned investments in this sector? The study conducted for the period 2018−2050 used the impact pathway approach and covered the centralized power and heat generation sector in Poland. The reported values of the concentration−response functions that relate human exposure to air pollution with health impact were reviewed. The results show that external costs decrease from an estimated annual level... [more]

Assessment of GHG Interactions in the Vicinity of the Municipal Waste Landfill Site—Case Study
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: energy recovery, GHG emissions, stable isotopes, waste management
Landfills have been identified as one of the major sources of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and as a contributor to climate change. Landfill facilities exhibit considerable spatial and temporal variability of both methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2) rates. The present work aimed to evaluate the spatial distribution of CH4 and CO2 and their δ13C isotopic composition originating from a municipal landfill site, to identify its contribution to the local GHG budget and the potential impact on the air quality of the immediate surroundings in a short-term response to environmental conditions. The objective was met by performing direct measurements of atmospheric CO2 and CH4 at the selected monitoring points on the surface and applying a binary mixing model for the determination of carbon isotopic ratios in the vicinity of the municipal waste landfill site. Air samples were collected and analysed for isotopic composition using flask sampling with a Picarro G2201-I Cavity Ring-Down Spectros... [more]

March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: direct torque control (DTC), fuzzy logic control (FLC), induction motor (IM), maximum power point tracing (MPPT), photovoltaic water pumping system (PVWPS)
This paper aims to search for a high-performance low-cost standalone photovoltaic water pumping system (PVWPS) based on a three-phase induction motor (IM). In order to control the IM, a fuzzy direct torque control (FDTC) is proposed in this paper for overcoming the limitations of the conventional direct torque control (CDTC). In fact, the CDTC suffers from several problems such as torque ripples, current distortion, and switching frequency variations. These problems can be solved with the proposed FDTC. To ensure high performance of the PVWPS, the reference torque is generated using a fuzzy speed controller (FSC) instead of a conventional proportional integral speed controller. In order to extract the maximum amount of power, the proposed maximum power point tracking controller is based on variable step size perturb and observe to surmount the weakness of the conventional perturb and observe technique. The performance of the proposed FDTC based on the FSC under variable climatic condit... [more]

Keywords: decarbonization, electrical power sector, Energy Storage, power grid, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, sustainable development
The electrical power sector plays an important role in the economic growth and development of every country around the world. Total global demand for electric energy is growing both in developed and developing economies. The commitment to the decarbonization of economies, which would mean replacing fossil fuels with renewable energy sources (RES) as well as the electrification of transport and heating as a means to tackle global warming and dangerous climate change, would lead to a surge in electricity consumption worldwide. Hence, it appears reasonable that the electric power sector should embed the principles of sustainable development into its functioning and operation. In addition, events such as the recent European gas crisis that have emerged as a result of the massive deployment of renewables need to be studied and prevented. This review aims at assessing the role of the renewable energy in the sustainable development of the electrical power sector, focusing on the energy provid... [more]

Economic Analysis of the Application of the Technological System for Removing Suspended Solids from Mine Drainage Waters
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: economy, management, mineral resources
This paper presents the results of the technological and economic analysis of mine water treatment systems before their discharge into the environment. The following analysis enabled us to determine the profitability of the investment, taking into account the TSS (total suspended solids) concentration in mine water. The simulation results showed that it is economically profitable to apply a water treatment system if natural sedimentation carried out in underground mine water passages, or in sedimentation tanks located on the ground, is ineffective for TSS removal. Economic and financial parameters allow us to conclude that all analyzed variants of the application of a pre-treatment system are characterized by high economic effectiveness. This mainly results from the high profitability of an analyzed investment, comparatively low capital expenditure, and present low market percentage rates. The most profitable variant (TSS concentration is 1000 mg/dm3) brings significant economic indica... [more]

Development of an Integrated Performance Design Platform for Residential Buildings Based on Climate Adaptability
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: building energy demand, energy-efficiency design decisions, life cycle cost, lighting environment, thermal environment
Building energy waste has become one of the major challenges confronting the world today, so specifications and targets for building energy efficiency have been put forward in countries around the world in recent years. The schematic design stage matters a lot for building energy efficiency, while most architects nowadays are less likely to make energy efficiency design decisions in this stage due to the lack of necessary means and methods for analysis. An integrated multi-objective multivariate framework for optimization analysis is proposed for the schematic design stage in the paper. Here, the design parameters of the building morphology and the design parameters of the building envelope are integrated for analysis, and an integrated performance prediction model is established for low-rise and medium-rise residential buildings. Then, a comparison of the performance indicators of low-rise and medium-rise residential buildings under five typical urban climatic conditions is carried ou... [more]

The CO2 Emission Efficiency of China’s Hotel Industry under the Double Carbon Objectives and Homestay Growth
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: CO2 emissions efficiency, double carbon objectives, homestay shock, hotel industry, three-stage DEA
Hotels emit large amounts of CO2 when providing services. Carbon neutrality objectives and the growth of homestays have forced hotel managers to pay more attention to carbon reduction. First, this paper adopted the input−output method to calculate hotel CO2 emissions. It was found that the amount of CO2 emissions in the hotel industry decreased from the year of 2016 to 2018, and there are structural differences in the CO2 emissions of the hotel industry in China. Furthermore, this paper adopted the three-stage SBM-DEA model to evaluate hotel CO2 emission efficiency in 30 provinces in China. The results show that CO2 emission efficiency increased significantly when environmental factors were eliminated. A close observation of different regions shows that the eastern region has a higher CO2 emission efficiency than the western and middle regions. The emergence of homestays has led to increased input slacks in the labor and energy consumption of hotels, which has a negative effect on effi... [more]

Renewable Energy in the Pomerania Voivodeship—Institutional, Economic, Environmental and Physical Aspects in Light of EU Energy Transformation
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: decarbonization strategy, energy potential, energy transition, PEST analysis, Pomerania Voivodeship, Renewable and Sustainable Energy
In the era of globalization and rapid economic growth, affecting most world economies, increased production and consumption are leading to higher levels of energy production and consumption. The growing demand for energy means that energy resources from conventional sources are not sufficient; moreover, its production generates high costs and contributes to the emission of greenhouse gases and waste. In view of the above, many countries have opted to implement an energy transformation. The energy transition allows the transition from an energy system based on conventional fuels to an energy system based mainly on renewable energy (RE) and low-emission sources. In the EU, the development of a “green economy” has become a strategic goal in the fight against climate change. The development of RE offers the possibility to improve the energy security of a given country and the entire EU. New, innovative technologies of RE also increase the attractiveness and competitiveness of the economies... [more]

March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: 5G, field programmable gate arrays, line-of-sight, liquid crystal, meta-surfaces, reconfigurable intelligent surfaces, smart reflect-arrays, wireless communications
With possible new use cases and demanding requirements of future 5th generation (5G) and beyond cellular networks, the future of mobile communications sounds promising. However, the propagation medium has been considered a randomly acting agent between the transmitter and the receiver. With the advent of the digital age of wireless communications, the received signal quality is degrading due to the uncontrollable interactions of the transmitted radio waves with the surrounding artifacts. This paper presents a comprehensive literature review on reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) and assisted application areas. With the RIS, the network operators can control radio waves’ scattering, reflection, and refraction characteristics by resolving the harmful properties of environmental wireless propagation. Further, the RIS can effectively control the wavefront, such as amplitude, phase, frequency, and even polarization, without requiring complex encoding, decoding, or radio wave processi... [more]

The Economic Impact of Investment in Renewables in Croatia by 2030
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: energy strategy, energy transition, input–output analysis, renewables
At the beginning of 2020, the Strategy of the Republic of Croatia until 2030 with an outlook to 2050 was adopted. The Strategy analyzes two energy transition scenarios, the accelerated energy transition and the moderate energy transition. The Strategy is guided and defined by goals set out by the European Union (EU), which primarily states to decrease greenhouse gas emissions and increase the share of renewable energy sources. In order to reach these goals, it is necessary to substitute fossil fuel capacities with new capacities for the production of electricity from renewable sources. In order to do so, a new wave of investments is needed. The Strategy does not detail the macroeconomic effects of investments in renewable sources on the Croatian economy, generally quantified through GDP growth and employment. This paper analyzes the macroeconomic effects of announced investments in renewable energy sources for electricity production. The analysis encompasses the time period 2021−2030.... [more]

Energy Losses Due to Imperfect Payment Infrastructure and Payment Instruments
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: costs, Energy, Energy Efficiency, payment infrastructure, payment instruments, time
One of the strategic objectives of the European Union is a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and improvement of energy efficiency by at least 32.5% in different areas of the economy by 2030. However, little is known about the impact of payment in retail on energy consumption. The purpose of this paper is to assess the chain of losses of time and energy, and therefore financial losses, that occur due to the imperfection of payment infrastructure and instruments using data of cashiers’ working time. The research is based on a regression analysis method, where the energy cost per payment transaction is considered in this study as a function of the number of customers per hour and the energy cost. The results of the panel models highlight that the number of customers per hour has a negative impact on the cost of energy per payment transaction. Furthermore, modern means and methods of payment, including cryptocurrencies, do not solve the problem of the excessive time that it takes to se... [more]

Subject: Environment
Keywords: diffuse reflector, evacuated tube collector, ray tracing, Solar Thermal, specular reflector, TRNSYS
In order to increase the overall solar energy gain of evacuated tube collectors, rear-side reflectors are used. In this way, the otherwise unused incident radiation between the tubes can be reflected back to the absorber, and the performance of the collector can be improved. In this paper, the use of a low-cost, diffusely reflecting, trapezoidal roof covering made from a galvanized metal sheet is investigated and compared to a high-quality, specularly reflecting plane reflector made of aluminum. For this purpose, ray-tracing analysis and TRNSYS simulations were carried out. In the ray-tracing analysis, the experimentally determined zero-loss collector efficiency η0 as well as the incident angle modifiers for each reflector can be reproduced with an error lower than 7.5%. Thermal system simulations show that the performance of both reflectors is comparable. The use of the low-cost reflector leads to an increase in annual collector output of around 30% compared to an increase with the sp... [more]

Bio-Based Waste’ Substrates for Degraded Soil Improvement—Advantages and Challenges in European Context
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: biochar, biodegradable waste, compost, plant ecosystem restoration contamination immobilization/degradation, remediation, revegetation, soil degradation, soil organic matter
The area of degraded sites in the world is constantly expanding and has been a serious environmental problem for years. Such terrains are not only polluted, but also due to erosion, devoid of plant cover and organic matter. The degradation trends can be reversed by supporting remediation/reclamation processes. One of the possibilities is the introduction of biodegradable waste/biowaste substrates into the soil. The additives can be the waste itself or preformed substrates, such composts, mineral-organic fertilizers or biochar. In EU countries average value of compost used for land restoration and landfill cover was equal 4.9%. The transformation of waste in valuable products require the fulfillment of a number of conditions (waste quality, process conditions, law, local circumstances). Application on degraded land surface bio-based waste substrates has several advantages: increase soil organic matter (SOM) and nutrient content, biodiversity and activity of microbial soil communities an... Subject: Environment
Keywords: energy cost, hospitals, longitudinal data, regression analysis, sustainable development
The continuous operation and the specialized conditions needed for safely delivering healthcare services make hospitals among the most expensive buildings. Several studies in different countries have investigated the potential role and contribution of macroscopic indices of hospitals in total energy requirements. In this work, we tried to investigate the energy requirements of Greek hospitals in terms of cost. We collected data from all public hospitals in Greece over a 2 year period (2018−2019) and evaluated the contribution of various factors in the total energy cost. The data revealed large variability by region and by hospital, even regarding structures of the same category and size. The analysis also showed that structural and operational data of each hospital differently influence the hospitals’ energy requirements. Using regression methods, we developed two models for calculating annual energy costs. One only contains hospital structural data (number of beds, type of hospital, n... [more]

One of the currently promoted methods of counteracting climate change is nature-based climate solutions, which harness the power of nature to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Sustainable management of ecosystems is a guarantee for sustained human well-being. This underestimated, but extremely efficient and cheap method of integrating nature resources into the urban fabric is an economic “injection” for communal authorities. These “green” benefits should be standard in land-use planning in the era of anthropocentrism. Solutions based on nature were the reason for investigating their perception by Polish municipalities. The survey covered the entire country (all 2477 municipalities) from 20 July to 31 August 2021 through an electronic survey, obtaining 2128 responses (85.9% return rate). Keywords: column, dehydrogenase, flow rate, kinetics of Cd removal, soil properties, soil remediation
The suitability of sewage-sludge derived washing agents (SS_WAs) (dissolved organic matter DOM; humic-like substances HLS; soluble humic substances SHS), was assessed for removing Cd from highly contaminated (300 mg/kg) sandy clay loam and clay. The soils were remediated via column flushing at two flow rates, 0.5 and 1.0 mL/min. The stability of the flow velocity (FV) depended on the type of SS_WA and decreased in the following order: DOM > HLS > SHS. Cd was most effectively removed during the first hours of flushing, and the process proceeded with a first-order kinetics. The overall process efficiency was higher at flow rate of 1.0 mL/min than at 0.5 mL/min and ranged from 65.7 (SHS) to 75.5% (DOM) for the sandy clay loam and from 64.7% (SHS) to 67.8% (DOM) for the clay. However, all SS_WAs at both flow rates removed the most mobile Cd fraction (F1) with an efficiency above 90%.
