An Economic Model to Assess Profitable Scenarios of EAF-Based Steelmaking Plants under Uncertain Conditions
March 8, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: direct reduction, economic evaluation, electric arc furnace, environmental cost, steel plant, steelmaking process
The steelmaking processes are considered extremely energy-intensive and carbon-dependent processes. In 2018, it was estimated that the emissions from global steel production represented 7−9% of direct emissions generated by fossil fuels. It was estimated that a specific emissions value of 1.8 tCO2 per ton of steel was produced due to the carbon-dependent nature of the traditional blast furnace and basic oxygen furnace (BF-BOF) route. Therefore, it is necessary to find an alternative solution to the BF-BOF route for steel production to counteract this negative trend, resulting in being sustainable from an environmental and economic point of view. To this concern, the objective of this work consists of developing a total cost function to assess the economic convenience of steelmaking processes considering the variability of specific market conditions (i.e., iron ore price, scraps price, energy cost, etc.). To this purpose, a direct reduction (DR) process fueled with natural gas (NG) to f... [more]

Lifecycle Assessment of a Non-Phase-Transition Drying Pyrolysis and Mass Conversion Technology
March 8, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: Biomass, carbon emission, lifecycle assessment, straw
A lifecycle model was established to explore the efficiency, economy, and greenhouse gas emissions of a non-phase-transition drying pyrolysis and mass conversion technology, based on the principle of lifecycle assessment. The evaluation scope included straw collection and transportation, drying and crushing, biomass pyrolysis, charcoal processing, and waste heat utilization. The results show that the energy output/input ratio for non-phase-transition drying pyrolysis was 20.43, and the energy efficiency was high. The pure profit from treating wet straw was USD 45.32 per ton, the profit margin of sales was 52.11%, and the economic benefit was high. The equivalent emission of CO2 was 34.10 g·MJ−1, demonstrating high environmental benefits. Therefore, non-phase-transition drying pyrolysis and mass conversion technology is a potential biomass utilization technology with energy, economic, and ecological benefits.

Significance of Hydrogen as Economic and Environmentally Friendly Fuel
March 8, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: energy carrier, environment, hydrogen energy, hydrogen production, sustainable fuel
The major demand of energy in today’s world is fulfilled by the fossil fuels which are not renewable in nature and can no longer be used once exhausted. In the beginning of the 21st century, the limitation of the fossil fuels, continually growing energy demand, and growing impact of green-house gas emissions on the environment were identified as the major challenges with current energy infrastructure all over the world. The energy obtained from fossil fuel is cheap due to its established infrastructure; however, these possess serious issues, as mentioned above, and cause bad environmental impact. Therefore, renewable energy resources are looked to as contenders which may fulfil most energy requirements. Among them, hydrogen is considered as the most environmentally friendly fuel. Hydrogen is clean, sustainable fuel and it has promise as a future energy carrier. It also has the ability to substitute the present energy infrastructure which is based on fossil fuel. This is seen and projec... [more]

Estimation of Prediction Error in Regression Air Quality Models
March 8, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: air monitoring, air pollutants, air quality models, approximation error, autonomous models, concentration modeling, multilayer perceptron, prediction, regression
Combustion of energy fuels or organic waste is associated with the emission of harmful gases and aerosols into the atmosphere, which strongly affects air quality. Air quality monitoring devices are unreliable and measurement gaps appear quite often. Missing data modeling techniques can be used to complete the monitoring data. Concentrations of monitored pollutants can be approximated with regression modeling tools, such as artificial neural networks. In this study, a long-term set of data from the air monitoring station in Zabrze (Silesia, South Poland) was analyzed. Concentration prediction was tested for the main air pollutants, i.e., O3, NO, NO2, SO2, PM10, CO. Multilayer perceptrons were used to model the concentrations. The predicted concentrations were compared to the observed ones to evaluate the approximation accuracy. Prediction errors were calculated separately for the whole concentration range as well as for the specified concentration subranges. Some different measures of e... [more]

Deployment and Optimisation of a Pilot-Scale IASBR System for Treatment of Dairy Processing Wastewater
March 8, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: activated sludge, aeration, biological nitrogen removal, biological phosphorus removal, dairy processing, Energy Efficiency, intermittently aerated sequencing batch reactor, sustainable built environment, waste management, wastewater treatment
Increased pressure is being applied to industrial wastewater treatment facilities to adhere to more stringent regulations for the discharge of treated wastewater and to improve energy efficiency of the process. Nitrogen and phosphorous removal can be challenging to achieve efficiently, and in the case of phosphorous removal, can often necessitate the use of chemicals. There is a major drive globally to improve wastewater treatment infrastructure, whilst simultaneously reducing the carbon footprint of the process. The intermittently aerated sequencing batch reactor offers a modification of the well-known sequencing batch reactor process that can enable lower energy requirements than conventional sequencing batch reactor processes and can facilitate enhanced nutrient removal capacities. However, to date much of the previous literature has focused on relatively short laboratory-scale trials (often with synthetic wastewater) which may not be representative of larger scale system performanc... March 7, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: carbon deposition, Carbon Dioxide, CH4, greenhouse gas reduction, H-ZSM-5, stability
Carbon dioxide and/or dry methane reforming serves as an effective pathway to mitigate these greenhouse gases. This work evaluates different oxide supports including alumina, Y-zeolite and H-ZSM-5 zeolite for the catalysis of dry reforming methane with Nickel (Ni). The composite catalysts were prepared by impregnating the supports with Ni (5%) and followed by calcination. The zeolite supported catalysts exhibited more reducibility and basicity compared to the alumina supported catalysts, this was assessed with temperature programmed reduction using hydrogen and desorption using carbon dioxide. The catalytic activity, in terms of CH4 conversion, indicated that 5 wt% Ni supported on alumina exhibited higher CH4 conversion (80.5%) than when supported on Y-zeolite (71.8%) or H-ZSM-5 (78.5%). In contrast, the H-ZSM-5 catalyst led to higher CO2 conversion (87.3%) than Y-zeolite (68.4%) and alumina (83.9%) supported catalysts. The stability tests for 9 h time-on-stream showed that Ni supporte... [more]

Pitfalls of the EU’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism
March 7, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: carbon border adjustment mechanism (CBAM), carbon border tax, carbon emissions, carbon pricingfi, general agreement on tariffs and trade (GATT)
The European Union (EU), which has led international discussions on global warming, officially announced its plan for the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) in July 2021. Many existing studies have indicated the CBAM will curtail greenhouse gases, and will subsequently be positive in terms of reducing global warming. However, serious legal issues and trade disputes are expected in terms of the compatibility of the CBAM with the trade rules of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT). Contrary to the EU’s explanation, the international community has a strong view of CBAM as a new trade barrier under the guise of preventing global warming. Above all, this is because it is an arbitrary measure by the EU and not the one that has been internationally agreed upon. Therefore, this paper tries to identify the pitfalls and estimate the global cost of CBAM, arguing that the mechanism is not in line with international trade rules, and that many countries will not sit back and suff... Energy and Acoustic Environmental Effective Approach for a Wind Farm Location
March 7, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: noise propagation, wind conditions, wind power, wind turbine
The justification for the construction of a wind farm depends primarily on two factors. The first one is the availability of the area with significant windiness; the second one is the environmental conditions in the selected location. The aim of this paper was to demonstrate the need for parallel noise and energy analyses during the design of a turbine location and selection of its type on the wind farm. The noise analyses were performed according to ISO 9613-2. A detailed analysis of wind conditions in a given location is a basic activity to determine the profitability of a wind power plant foundation. The main environmental impact of WF is noise emission. The examples of wind turbines’ selection optimally utilizing wind resources in two particular locations are presented. Six wind turbines were analyzed for each location. The choice of a wind turbine for the examined location was determined by the parameters of the device, the results of annual wind measurements, and acceptable noise... [more]

Subject: Environment
Keywords: climate change, environmental agreements, gravity model, Poisson pseudo-maximum likelihood, technology
We investigated the effect of agreements related to climate change on bilateral trade, using the Poisson pseudo-maximum likelihood (PPML) estimator on a large dataset that requires computing high-dimensional fixed effects. This study develops the concordance between commodities based on harmonized systems (HS) and technologies defined by both international and cooperative patent classifications (IPC/CPC). Using the OECD ENV-TECH classification, covering 169 exporting countries and 179 importing countries worldwide from 1991 to 2019, we determined the relationship between HS commodities and IPC/CPC climate change technologies. The main findings show that, first, the Kyoto Protocol has increased international bilateral trade in the climate change industry, while the Montreal Protocol has led to the opposite effect. In addition, the impact of environmental stringency on international bilateral trade in climate-related industries was negative and significant, refuting the Porter Hypothesis... [more]

Subject: Environment
Keywords: automotive industry, body shop, control system, HVAC, Machine Learning
The alternative control concept using emission from the machine has the potential to reduce energy consumption in HVAC systems. This paper reports on a study of alternative inputs for a control system of HVAC using machine learning algorithms, based on data that are gathered in a welding area of an automotive factory. A data set of CO2, fine dust, temperatures and air velocity was logged using continuous and gravimetric measurements during two typical production weeks. The HVAC system was reduced gradually each day to trigger fluctuations of emission. The data were used to train and test various machine learning models using different statistical indices, consequently to choose a best fit model. Different models were tested and the Long Short-Term Memory model showed the best result, with 0.821 discrepancy on R2. The gravimetric samples proved that the reduction of air exchange rate does not correlate to escalation of fine dust linearly, which means one cannot rely on just gravimetric... [more]

Experimental Oxygen Mass Transfer Study of Micro-Perforated Diffusers
March 7, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: aeration efficiency, micro-perforated diffuser, oxygen mass transfer, oxygen transfer efficiency
We studied new micro-perforated diffuser concepts for the aeration process in wastewater treatment plants and evaluated their aeration efficiency. These are micro-perforated plate diffusers with orifice diameters of 30 µm, 50 µm and 70 µm and a micro-perforated tube diffuser with an orifice diameter of 50 µm. The oxygen transfer of the diffuser concepts is tested in clean water, and it is compared with commercial aerators from the literature. The micro-perforated tube diffuser and micro-perforated plate diffusers outperform the commercial membrane diffusers by up to 44% and 20%, respectively, with regard to the oxygen transfer efficiency. The most relevant reason for the improved oxygen transfer is the fine bubble aeration with bubble sizes as small as 1.8 mm. Furthermore, the more homogenous cross-sectional bubble distribution of the micro-perforated tube diffuser has a beneficial effect on the gas mass transfer due to less bubble coalescence. However, the pressure drop of micro-perfo... [more]

March 7, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: circular economy, eco-efficiency, Energy Efficiency, energy rehabilitation, facade, passive systems, recycling, Sustainability
In a planet with limited resources, climate change is a severe problem, intensified by industrial development. This is particularly important in the construction sector. According to the International Energy Agency (2021), the construction sector is responsible for 40% of the global energy consumption and 36% of CO2 emissions. In this way, sustainable architectural solutions should be a priority in our fight against climate change, for it is necessary to propose solutions that help to reuse existing resources, thus reducing consumption. In this sense, the rehabilitation of buildings with solutions that favor the circular economy will become a key element in the construction sector. This work provides the design of a facade for building rehabilitation based on the circular economy paradigm, which is implanted in a model building as a case study. The HULC tool quantifies the improvement in energy efficiency that this rehabilitation entails when compared to a conventional facade. With the... [more]

March 7, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: electrical wiring, fire temperature, fire-fighting systems, heating, safety, temperature model
Evaluating environmental conditions that trigger fire-fighting equipment is one of the primary design tasks that have to be taken into account when engineering electrical systems supplying such devices. All of the solutions are aimed at, among others, preserving environmental parameters in a building being on fire for an assumed time and at a level enabling safe evacuation. These parameters include temperature, thermal radiation, visibility range, oxygen concentration, and environmental toxicity. This article presents a new mathematical model for heat exchange between the environment and an electric cable under thermal conditions exceeding permissible values for commonly used non-flammable installation cables. The method of analogy between thermal and electrical systems was adopted for modelling heat flow. Does Air Pollution Impact Fiscal Sustainability? Evidence from Chinese Cities
March 7, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: air pollution, fiscal sustainability, public finance sustainability, sustainable development
Fiscal sustainability is an issue of great concern for governments globally and air pollution control has become an important factor affecting fiscal sustainability. This study aims to examine the impact of air pollution on fiscal sustainability in the short and long run. We conducted an empirical analysis based on air pollution and local government debt data on China’s prefecture-level cities in 2014−2019, using regression discontinuity design (RDD) and a panel data model. The results show that air pollution reduces the debt burden of governments in the short run. However, in the long run, addressing the negative impacts of air pollution adds to the debt burden of local governments, hindering fiscal sustainability. Fiscal freedom and the level of public services significantly moderate the negative impact of air pollution on fiscal sustainability. A higher level of fiscal freedom generally indicates a greater incentive for local governments to raise pollutant emission standards, streng... [more]

Electrical and Energy Systems Integration for Maritime Environment-Friendly Transportation
March 7, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: design methodology, electric ship, Energy Storage, hybrid-propelled ship, port power system, renewables, shore connection, transportation electrification, zero-emission navigation
The policies against climate change require the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions of marine transportation. To reach the planned goals, the most promising approach is working both on ships improvement and ports redesign. The latter must enable the new green ships supply with sustainable electrical energy, by integrating shore connection systems, local renewables, and energy storage systems. In this paper, a methodology to obtain such an objective is proposed, capable of taking into account both ships’ and ports’ characteristics. The methodology workflow is explained through a case study, where two shore connection power sizes and two different operative approaches for recharging the ship onboard energy storage are considered. A discussion about the most suitable energy storage technologies is also provided. The case study shows how the methodology can be applied, as well as demonstrating that the port infrastructure has a direct effect on the ship environmental performance.

Refrigerated Transport: State of the Art, Technical Issues, Innovations and Challenges for Sustainability
March 7, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: Carbon Dioxide, cold chain, environmental impact, PCM, refrigerated transport, refrigeration, renewable energies, Sustainability, vaccine
The cold chain is responsible for perishable products preservation and transportation, maintaining a proper temperature to slow biological decay processes. Often the efficiency of the cold chain is less than ideal, significantly increasing food waste and energy consumption. Refrigerated transport is a critical phase of the cold chain because of its negative impact on energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. It is estimated that around 15% of global fossil fuel energy is used in the refrigerated transport sector, so there has been a growing interest in the last decades in the optimization of these systems in order to reduce their environmental impact. Vapor compression refrigeration units, usually powered by means of a diesel engine, are the most commonly used systems in road refrigerated transport. This paper provides a review of (a) currently used systems and alternative technologies that could reduce the environmental impacts of road refrigerated transport and (b) optimizatio... [more]

Subject: Environment
Keywords: Australia, cost optimization, HVDC cable, life cycle assessment, photovoltaics, Singapore
This paper aims to evaluate the life cycle greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of importing electrical power into Singapore, generated from a large-scale solar photovoltaic (PV) power plant in Australia, through a long-distance subsea high-voltage direct current (HVDC) cable. A cost optimization model was developed to estimate the capacities of the system components. A comprehensive life cycle assessment model was built to estimate emissions of manufacturing and use of these components. Our evaluation shows that, for covering one fifth of Singapore’s electrical energy needs, a system with an installed capacity of 13GWPV, 17 GWh battery storage and 3.2GW subsea cable is required. The life cycle GHG emissions of such a system are estimated to be 110gCO2eq/kWh, with the majority coming from the manufacturing of solar PV panels. Cable manufacturing does not contribute largely toward GHG emissions. By varying full-load hours and cable lengths, it was assessed that sites closer to Singapore might... [more]

Subject: Environment
Keywords: carpooling, commuting, emissions, Energy, remote working, transport
Effective solutions are needed to decrease the greenhouse gases emissions of the transport sector, not only in terms of supply-side measures, but also including demand-side solutions. This paper focuses on the passenger demand related to daily commuting, either for work or study purposes. A bottom-up analysis is presented, which draws from detailed data for Lombardy, the most populous region in Northern Italy, to build an estimate of the annual energy consumption and emissions related to commuting. The potential of different measures to decrease emissions is evaluated, including the renovation of the vehicle stock, higher levels of remote working, and the deployment of carpooling schemes. The results show that the largest part of the current emissions from commuting is caused by car use, both due to its higher modal share and to the higher specific emissions, which are in turn also contributed by the low occupancy rates. Subject: Environment
Keywords: guidelines, MEPS, motor efficiency level, pump efficiency
With the current concerns about sustainable development and energy consumption in buildings, water pumping systems have become essential for reducing energy consumption. This research aims to develop guidelines for the energy assessment of water pumping systems in multifamily buildings. The methodological procedures are: (i) definition of the efficiencies of electric motors; (ii) definition of pump efficiency levels; (iii) determination of energy consumption; and (iv) construction of the efficiency scale and guidelines for projects and assessments. The results obtained were that centrifugal pumps with 40% efficiency have higher energy consumption, regardless of the efficiency class of the electric motors, showing a 20% increase in electrical energy consumption. Lower efficiencies directly impact the energy efficiency rating of the water pumping system. Thus the 40% efficiency obtained energy efficiency rating “Very Low—VL” for all motor efficiency classes (between IE1 and IE5). At 60%... [more]
