Pro-Environmental Behaviour in the European Union Countries
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: environment, European Union, households, pro-environmental behaviours, TOPSIS
The purpose of the presented research is to assess pro-environmental behaviour (PEB) in European Union countries in 2009 and 2019. The study used a synthetic measure developed using the TOPSIS (Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to an Ideal Solution) benchmark method. This method enables distinguishing classes and ranks of countries depending on the adopted characteristics. Basic measures of descriptive statistics, i.e., average, standard deviation and the coefficient of variation, were used in the analysis of the data set. The main research question addressed in this study concerns the relationship between the level of PEB and economic, demographic, and educational factors—not only on a micro scale but also from the macroeconomic perspective. The research has revealed a wide variety throughout the European Union (EU-27) countries in terms of pro-environmental behaviour. Sweden, Finland, and Denmark top the ranking, while Malta, Greece, Spain, and Romania are at the bottom of... [more]

Loss Investigation for Multiphase Induction Machine under Open-Circuit Fault Using Field−Circuit Coupling Finite Element Method
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: field–circuit coupling FEM, loss estimation, multiphase IM, open circuit fault
This paper focuses on the loss estimation for the multiphase induction machine (IM) operating under fault-tolerant conditions through the field−circuit coupling finite element method (FEM). Both one-phase and two-phase open-circuit faults of a seven-phase IM are researched, and different spatial positions of the fault phases are taken into consideration. The magnitudes and phase angles of the residual phase’s current are deduced based on the principle of equal magnitude of the residual phase currents and unchanged fundamental magnetic motive force (MMF). The magnetic fields’ coupling between the fundamental and harmonic planes is analyzed. Then, the time-stepping electromagnetic fields calculation of the seven-phase IM are carried out under the commercial software Simplorer−Maxwell environment. The transient and steady performance for both the health and fault conditions are obtained based on the rotor field-oriented control (RFOC) strategy. The Joule loss and iron loss are calculated... Subject: Environment
Keywords: availability, coal mills, generalized stochastic Petri net, preventive maintenance, reliability
Rapid changes in electricity power markets have increased the production costs of coal-fired power plants and pushed their production to the limits of profitability. For power plants currently in operation, a possible approach to cope with this issue is to introduce novel methods that increase the plant’s reliability and availability. Coal mills are a subsystem that should ensure a plant’s availability without unexpected breakdowns. Remediation-based maintenance is defined as a set of actions performed after fault detection that do not require instant shutdown due to safety reasons. The aim of this paper was to provide a scientific confirmation that by implementing a novel remediation-based maintenance strategy, electricity production breakdowns can be significantly reduced. First, the performance of the proposed maintenance method was proved in simulation where coal mills were modeled by generalized stochastic Petri nets. The maintenance strategy was then experimentally verified in a... [more]

Keywords: creep behavior, long-term permeability, pre-existing cracks, red sandstone, temperature
Utilizing underground coal gasification cavities for carbon capture and sequestration provides a potentially economic and sustainable solution to a vexing environmental and energy problem. The thermal influence on creep properties and long-term permeability evolution around the underground gasification chamber is a key issue in UCG-CCS operation in containing fugitive emissions. We complete multi-step loading and unloading creep tests with permeability measurement at confining stresses of 30 MPa on pre-cracked sandstone specimens thermally heat-treated to 250, 500, 750 and 1000 °C. Observations indicate a critical threshold temperature of 500 °C required to initiate thermally-induced cracks with subsequent strength reduction occurring at 750 °C. Comparison of histories of creep, visco-elastic and visco-plastic strains highlight the existence of a strain jump at a certain deviatoric stress level—where the intervening rock bridge between the twin starter-cracks is eliminated. Subject: Environment
Keywords: biodegradable liquids, distribution transformer, natural esters, power transformer, synthetic esters
In recent years, the use of biodegradable fluids as liquid insulation for distribution and power transformers is spreading. The main biodegradable fluids used are natural and synthetic esters, although biodegradable hydrocarbons have been recently proposed. Biodegradable fluids have a much lower environmental impact than mineral oil, limiting the risk of soil contamination in leaks, which makes them a suitable solution for applications such as offshore transformers or railway transformers. Additionally, these fluids have a higher flash point than conventional mineral oils, which dramatically reduces the risk of fire and collateral damage derived from explosion and fire. Despite these advantageous factors, there are still some aspects that hinder the broadening of their use, such as the difference in thermal properties or the lack of accepted maintenance procedures for transformers that use them as liquid insulation. This paper presents the current status of biodegradable insulating flu... [more]

Subject: Environment
Keywords: cluster, DC microgrid, DC/DC converter, fault, fault current limiter (FCL)
A new DC fault current limiter (FCL)-based circuit breaker (CB) for DC microgrid (MG) clusters is proposed in this paper. The analytical expressions of the DC fault current of a bidirectional interlink DC/DC converter in the interconnection line of two nearby DC MGs are analyzed in detail. Meanwhile, a DC fault clearing solution (based on using a DC FCL in series with a DC circuit breaker) is proposed. This structure offers low complexity, cost, and power losses. To assess the performance of the proposed method, time-domain simulation studies are carried out on a test DC MG cluster in a MATLAB/Simulink environment. The results of the proposed analytical expressions are compared with simulation results. The obtained results verify the analytical expression of the fault current and prove the effectiveness of the proposed DC fault current limiting and clearing strategy.
