Investigation of Impulse and Continuous Discharge Characteristics of Large-Capacity Lithium-Ion Batteries
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: discharge characteristics, equivalent circuit, lithium-ion battery, simulation model
Lithium-ion batteries are one of the most popular and efficient energy storage devices. In this paper, the characteristics of high-capacity lithium-iron-phosphate batteries during the impulse and long-term operation modes of batteries with different levels of the discharge current are considered. A modified DP-model is proposed. The novelty of the model is the possibility to calculate the activation polarization parameters for different discharge currents. The state of charge is estimated using a high-order polynomial. Based on the developed model, transient processes with rapid load changes and the dependence of the battery voltage on the state of charge were obtained. Here, the model is intended to be used for the design of energy storage systems. The results showed that the DP-model is reliable under the tested conditions and can be used for the considered application.

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: accumulation condition, accumulation pattern, Bohai Bay Basin, Damintun Sag, tight oil
To determine the accumulation conditions and pattern of tight oil in oil shales in the Damintun Sag, Bohai Bay Basin, this study investigated the basic geological conditions of the source rocks and reservoirs in the sag using methods such as organic carbon analysis, whole-rock XRD analysis, and field emission scanning electron microscopy. The results show that: (1) The high-quality source rocks in the lower submember of the fourth member of the Shahejie Formation (E2S42) in the Damintun Sag have high organic matter abundance, favorable organic matter types, high hydrocarbon expulsion efficiency, and high fluidity. Therefore, they provide sufficient oil sources for tight oil accumulation.; (2) During the burial of organic-rich shales, the thermal degradation of organic matter produces large amounts of organic acids, which can dissolve carbonate minerals. In this way, secondary pores are formed.; (3) The special microscopic pore structure that connects fractures to pores is the key to th... [more]

Pore Structure Multifractal Characteristics of Coal Reservoirs in the Central and Eastern Qinshui Basin and Influencing Factors
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: middle-high rank coal, multifractal geometries, NMR, pore structure heterogeneity, Qinshui coalfield
The heterogeneity of the pore structure of coal reservoirs affects the desorption and diffusion characteristics of coalbed methane, and determining its distribution law is conducive to improving the theory of coalbed methane development. The central and eastern parts of the Qinshui Basin are rich in coalbed methane resources, but the heterogeneity characteristics of the pore structure of coal reservoirs are not clear. NMR has the advantages of being fast, non-destructive and full-scale, and multifractal can describe the self-similarity of NMR T2 curve at different scales so as to analyze the complexity of pore distribution. Based on this, 15 samples with different coal ranks were collected from the central and eastern Qinshui Basin (Ro,max between 1.54 and 2.78%), and quantitative pore characterization experiments such as low-field nuclear magnetic resonance (LF-NMR) and low-temperature liquid nitrogen adsorption (LTN2A) were conducted. Study on Purging Strategy of Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cell under Different Operation Conditions
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: cold start, multi physical transmission process, multiscale two-dimensional model, operation conditions, proton exchange membrane fuel cell, purge strategy
The commercial proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) system needs to be equipped with the capacity to survive a harsh environment, including sub-freezing temperatures. The cold start of PEMFC brings about great technical challenges, mainly due to the ice blockage in the components, which seriously hinders the multi physical transmission process. A multiscale, two-dimensional model was established to explore the gas purging in PEMFC under different electrochemical reaction intensities. The results indicate that the optimal case is obtained by B3-1 with a power density of 0.796 W cm−2, and the power density increases first and then decreases, followed by stoichiometric flow ratio (ξ) changes. It is worth noting that the water mole fraction in the PEM is closely related to the water concentration gradient. However, the differences in the initial water distribution in porous media have little bearing on the condensed water in the gas channel, and the liquid water in the gas diffusion... [more]

Fracture Parameters Optimization and Field Application in Low-Permeability Sandstone Reservoirs under Fracturing Flooding Conditions
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: brittleness evaluation, fracture parameters, fracturing flooding, hydraulic fracturing, low-permeability sandstone
To solve engineering problems in the production process after fracturing and flooding of low-permeability sandstone reservoirs, such as rapid water-cut rise and low water flooding efficiency, a method for optimizing the fracture parameters of low-permeability sandstone reservoirs under fracturing flooding conditions was proposed. A rock property test experiment was first carried out, the fracturing coefficient was defined, and an evaluation method for the brittleness index of low-permeability sandstone was established to optimize the perforation location of the fracturing reservoir. A productivity numerical model for the two-phase flow of oil−water in matrix−fracture media was established to optimize the fracture morphology under fracturing flooding conditions. The results showed that the quartz content, Young’s modulus, and peak stress mainly affected the fracturing coefficient of rock and are the key indicators for evaluating the brittleness of low-permeability sandstone reservoirs.... Research on the Effect of Shale Core Mechanical Behavior on Casing Deformation
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: casing deformation, mechanical behavior, shale, stress sensitivity, triaxial compression
As an unconventional, high-quality, efficient, and clean low-carbon energy, shale gas has become a new bright spot in the exploration and development of global oil and gas resources. However, with the increasing development of shale gas in recent years, the anisotropic load of the shale reservoir during the mining process has caused the casing to be deformed or damaged more and more seriously. In this paper, the mechanical behavior of shale core shear, triaxial and radial compression are studied using rock true compression tests, shear tests and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) technology. The process of macroscopic and microscopic changes of shale fractures during the tests were analyzed to predict the effect of the fracture-state changes and stress-state changes of different shale reservoirs on the casing deformation. The results show that after the shale core is damaged, the overall pore structure changes, resulting in the decrease or increase in shale porosity. During the process o... [more]

February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: acetone, Aldol condensation, furfural, liquid fuel intermediates, Mg/Al hydrotalcite, Mg/Al mixed oxide
The aldol condensation of furfural and acetone is considered a promising method for the production of liquid fuel intermediates. 4-(2-furyl)-3-buten-2-one (FAc) and 1,5-di-2-furanyl-1,4-pentadien-3-one (F2Ac) are the main products of the reaction, which can go through the hydrodeoxygenation process to convert to diesel and jet fuel range fuels. Considering the present situation at the fuel-market related to crude oil shortage, the above-mentioned process seems to be a convenient path to obtain fuels in the diesel and kerosene range. This research focuses on the effect of water on the furfural conversion and product distribution during the aldol condensation. The catalyst chosen for this research was MgAl mixed oxide in molar ratio 3:1. The reaction was performed at 40 °C and 1 MPa in a continuous-flow reactor with and without water in the feedstock. February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: microfluidics, multiple emulsion, O–O coalescence, W1–W1 coalescence, W1–W2 coalescence
In water-in-oil-in-water (W1/O/W2) double emulsions several irreversible instability phenomena lead to changes. Besides diffusive processes, coalescence of droplets is the main cause of structural changes. In double emulsions, inner droplets can coalesce with each other (W1−W1 coalescence), inner droplets can be released via coalescence (W1−W2 coalescence) and oil droplets can coalesce with each other (O−O coalescence). Which of the coalescence pathways contributes most to the failure of the double emulsion structure cannot be determined by common measurement techniques. With monodisperse double emulsions produced with microfluidic techniques, each coalescence path can be observed and quantified simultaneously. By comparing the occurrence of all possible coalescence events, different hydrophilic surfactants in combination with PGPR are evaluated and discussed with regard to their applicability in double emulsion formulations. Direct electrochemical oxidation, as an economical and efficient method, has recently received increasing attention for ammonia-nitrogen wastewater treatment. Developing a low-cost, efficient catalytic electrode is the key to solve the problem of sluggish ammonia oxidation reaction (AOR) kinetics. In this study, a three-dimensional (3D) Ni foam electrode coated with NiCuOOH petal-like cluster structures was prepared using a simple sonochemical method combined with a surface electrochemical reconstruction strategy. This structure has a large surface area and abundant NiCuOOH active sites, giving a good premise for extraordinary electrocatalytic activity of AOR. The results show that the maximum current density for AOR reaches 97.8 mA cm−2 at 0.60 V vs. saturated calomel electrode (SCE). Additionally, 96.53% of NH4+-N removal efficiency and 63.12% of TN removal efficiency were acquired in the electrolysis system based on the NiCuOOH-NF electrode, as well as a good stability for at least... Interpretation Method for Lost Gas in Deep Coalbed and Its Application
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: adsorbed and free gas ratio, coalbed methane, free gas, lost gas, time of loss, USBM method
The gas loss time during the deep coalbed coring process is long. The measured desorption curve does not meet the application conditions for the classical United States Bureau of Mines (USBM) method. However, the industry still lacks a reliable interpretation method, which affects identifying deep coalbed methane reserves and optimizing sweet spots. (Method) The classical double-porosity and double-permeability theoretical model was adopted, and the influence of reservoir permeability, water saturation, and temperature on gas output in the coalbed desorption process was considered. Based on the measured field desorption data of the P1 sample of the No. 8 coal in the Benxi Formation on the eastern margin of Ordos, the entire process for the deep coalbed gas content test was numerically simulated. Review on the Mechanism of CO2 Storage and Enhanced Gas Recovery in Carbonate Sour Gas Reservoir
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: CO2 storage, enhanced gas recovery, phase, sour gas reservoir, water–rock reaction
Carbonate gas reservoirs in the Sichuan Basin have many complex characteristics, such as wide distribution, strong heterogeneity, high temperature, high pressure, high H2S and CO2 content and an active edge or bottom water. In the late stage of exploitation of carbonate sour gas reservoirs, the underground depleted reservoirs can provide a broad and favorable space for CO2 storage. If CO2 is injected into the depleted carbonate sour reservoirs for storage, it will help to achieve the goal of carbon neutrality, and the CO2 stored underground can perform as “cushion gas” to prevent the advance of edge or bottom water, to achieve the purpose of enhanced natural gas recovery. Injecting CO2 into low permeability reservoirs for oil displacement has become an important means to enhance oil recovery (EOR). However, the mechanism of EOR by injecting CO2 into carbonate sour gas reservoirs is not clear and the related fundamental research and field application technology are still in the explorat... Optimisation of an Integrated System: Combined Heat and Power Plant with CO2 Capture and Solar Thermal Energy
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Carbon Dioxide Capture, combined heat and power, parabolic-trough collector, solar energy
This paper aims to evaluate different design configurations of a combined heat and power (CHP) plant with post-combustion CO2 capture. Three cases are involved in this study: case 1 consists of three trains and each train has a configuration of one gas turbine with a heat recovery steam generator (HRSG); case 2 consists of three trains and one steam turbine; and case 3 consists of only two trains. The third case presented the highest CHP efficiency of 72.86% with 511.8 MW net power generation. After selecting the optimum configuration, a parabolic-trough collector (PTC) was incorporated to generate additional saturated steam at 3.5 bar for the capture plant, adding greater flexibility to the CHP because more steam was available. In addition, the efficiency of the cycle increased from 72.86% to 80.18%. Although case 2 presented lower efficiency than case 3, it has a steam turbine which brings the possibility of increasing the amount of electricity instead of steam production. When the P... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: combustion, solid biofuel analysis, thermochemical process, thermogravimetric analysis, woody thermal degradation
The chemical composition of woody biomass directly influences its thermal degradation and, subsequently, the selection of processes and technologies used for its conversion into energy or value-added products. Thus, the present study aimed to evaluate the thermal behavior and chemical-physical characteristics of three different woody biomass species (hardwood, softwood and chemically-treated wood) using thermogravimetric and characterization analysis based on ISO 16948, ISO 18125 and ISO 18122 methods. The main findings show that the most significant trend of mass loss, around 70%, in the thermal degradation of the different species of woody biomass occurred between 150 °C and 500 °C and that the residual mass at 650 °C was between 13% and 24%. Although the three species of woody biomass showed a high average energy content (19.60 MJ/kg), softwood samples had a more stable thermal degradation than hardwoods and chemically-treated woods.

Liquid Loading of Horizontal Gas Wells in Changbei Gas Field
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Changbei gas field, horizontal gas well, liquid loading, water source analysis
The Changbei gas field, which initially exhibited high gas-production performance, is dominated by large-displacement horizontal wells. With the decrease in reservoir pressure, the liquid loading in the gas well is currently severe, and production has been rapidly decreasing. Thus, recognizing the gas-well liquid loading to maintain stable gas-well production is necessary. A method was established to identify the water source of the liquid loading in the Changbei gas field. First, formation water and condensate water were identified based on the mineralization of the recovered water and the mass concentration of Cl− and K+ + Na+, and then the condensate content of the water produced in the gas well was qualitatively evaluated. The water−gas ratio curve for the gas well was plotted to determine whether the produced water was edge-bottom water, pore water, or condensate. Power systems have recently faced significant challenges due to the increased penetration of renewable energy sources (RES) such as frequency deviation due to fluctuations, unpredictable nature, and uncertainty of this RES. In this paper, a cascaded controller called (1+PD)-PID is proposed to reduce the influence of RES uncertainties on the system and to maintain the system’s reliability during fluctuations. Investigation of the Vertical Propagation Pattern of the 3D Hydraulic Fracture under the Influence of Interlayer Heterogeneity
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: finite element method, HF vertical propagation, hydraulic fracturing, interlayer heterogeneity, thin interlayers
The low permeability and thinly interbedded reservoirs have poor physical properties and strong interbedded heterogeneity, and it is difficult to control the hydraulic fracture (HF) height and width during hydraulic fracturing, which affects the effect of HF penetration and sand addition. In this work, a three-dimensional fluid−solid fully coupled HF propagation model is established to simulate the influence of interlayer heterogeneity on vertical HF height and HF width, and the relationship between HF length and HF width under different treatment parameters is further studied. The results show that, in thin interbedded strata, the high interlayer stress contrast, high tensile strength, and low Young’s modulus will inhibit the vertical propagation of HFs. The interlayer heterogeneity results in the vertical wavy distribution of HF width. Under the high interlayer stress contrast, Young’s modulus, and tensile strength, the HF width profile becomes narrow and the variation amplitude decr... [more]

In the propulsion system of cryogenic liquid rockets, low-frequency pressure oscillation is a long-standing issue occurring in its feeding pipe, and is not conducive to the normal operation of the rocket. Its mechanism and excitation process are not very clear due to the limitation of the existing numerical method and the difficulty of the real dynamic experiment. Inspired by the periodic suck-back flow phenomenon of steam condensation, the fluctuation of the two-phase interface might be the crucial factor to initiate the low-frequency pressure oscillation. To simulate this interfacial characteristic of cryogenic propellant, a novel numerical model is proposed to predict the mass transfer rate weighted by the interfacial curvature. Aiming at the oxygen jet condensation simulation, the low-frequency pressure oscillation phenomenon is obtained successfully with the excitation frequency of 10.6 Hz, consistent with the natural frequency of the engine test run.
