An Approach for Predicting the Effective Stress Field in Low-Permeability Reservoirs Based on Reservoir-Geomechanics Coupling
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: effective stress, finite difference, finite element, pore pressure, tectonic stress
Low-permeability reservoirs are important to the future growth of oil and gas reserves and production in China. Predicting the effective stress, σe, in reservoirs is vitally important due to its considerable impact on reservoir development through hydraulic fracturing. This paper presents methods for predicting the σe field in ultralow-permeability reservoirs through reservoir−geomechanics coupling, which involve the simulation and coupling of the tectonic stress σ and pore pressure Pp fields based on three-dimensional (3D) geological models. First, 3D geological models were constructed based on basic data for the oilfield where the reservoir of interest is located. Then, finite element and finite difference simulations were performed to construct the σ and Pp fields, respectively, in the reservoir. Different types of initial σe were coupled based on 3D geological models. Subsequently, a dynamic σe field in the reservoir was established based on oilfield production data in conjunction... [more]

Valuable Biodiesel Catalyst from Solvay Wastewater
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: biodiesel, CaO, Optimization, response surface methodology, solvay wastewater
Biodiesel is considered a renewable, green fuel as it is derived from renewable living resources like animal fats or vegetable oils. This research is utilized to investigate the possibility of using Solvay wastewater as a source of biodiesel catalyst, which is CaO. CaCl2 from Solvay wastewater reacts with CO2 to produce CaCO3. CaCO3 is then heated to produce pure CaO. Waste cooking oil, wastewater, and CO2, which are considered dangerous materials to the environment, are used to produce valuable products. This research has environmental and economic benefit benefits of using waste materials as a replacement for raw materials. The selected experimental parameters for the CaCO3 production step are stirring rate (500−1300) rpm, CO2 gas flow rate (900−2000) mL/min, amount of ammonia (15−35) mL, and glycerol volume (0−25) mL. The selected experimental parameters for the biodiesel production step are reaction time (2−6) h, methanol to oil ratio (9−15), catalyst loading (1−5) %, and reaction... [more]

Numerical Simulation and Experimental Test of the Sliding Core Dynamics of a Pressure Controlled Jet Crushing Tool for Natural Gas Hydrate Exploitation
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: experimental analysis, natural gas hydrate, numerical simulation, pressure-controlled jet crushing tool, solid-state fluidized exploitation
A pressure-controlled jet crushing tool (PJCT) for the exploitation of deep-sea natural gas hydrate (NGH) was invented to achieve sediment crushing and cavity creation. The opening and closing of tool is controlled by changing the internal flow rate remotely. It can realize the controllable continuous switching of the working state between horizontal well drilling and cavity creation. A dynamic simulation model of the sliding core was established based on the innovative design scheme of the PJCT and the motion law of its slide core was analyzed under the influence of spring stiffness, friction coefficient, and flow rate loading scheme. Moreover, an engineering prototype of the PJCT was manufactured so that a sliding core motion experiment of the prototype was carried out. When the drilling fluid flow rate reaches 455 L/min, the PJCT can stably complete the self-locking and unlocking functions. Its sliding core needs more time to stabilize with an increase in spring stiffness. Meanwhile... [more]

Integration of an Absorption Chiller to a Process Applying the Pinch Analysis Approach
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: absorption chiller, heat integration, low-temperature heat, Pinch Analysis
In addition to the consumption of hot utilities, there is also a significant cost associated with the consumption of cold utilities when there is a high demand for cooling. A promising solution for cooling is an absorption chiller (AC), which uses heat instead of electricity for cooling. A thermodynamic approach for evaluating AC integrated with a process is presented in this work. A model for assessing the properties and duties of an AC cycle was developed. The integration of a combined process-AC system was evaluated using the Grand Composite Curve. Three different options of integration were analyzed: (i) above the Pinch, (ii) below the Pinch, and (iii) across the Pinch. AC represents the combined effect of a heat engine and a heat pump, as the generator together with the absorber and condenser has the function of a heat engine, while the evaporator combined with the absorber and condenser mimics the function of a heat pump. The comparison between the non-integrated and integrated p... [more]

Numerical Study of the Effect of the Reynolds Number and the Turbulence Intensity on the Performance of the NACA 0018 Airfoil at the Low Reynolds Number Regime
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: aerodynamic, airfoil, Computational Fluid Dynamics, drag force, lift force, NACA 0018, Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes, turbulent, unsteady, vertical axis wind turbine
In recent years, there has been an increased interest in the old NACA four-digit series when designing wind turbines or small aircraft. One of the airfoils frequently used for this purpose is the NACA 0018 profile. However, since 1933, for over 70 years, almost no new experimental studies of this profile have been carried out to investigate its performance in the regime of small and medium Reynolds numbers as well as for various turbulence parameters. This paper discusses the effect of the Reynolds number and the turbulence intensity on the lift and drag coefficients of the NACA 0018 airfoil under the low Reynolds number regime. The research was carried out for the range of Reynolds numbers from 50,000 to 200,000 and for the range of turbulence intensity on the airfoil from 0.01% to 0.5%. Moreover, the tests were carried out for the range of angles of attack from 0 to 10 degrees. The uncalibrated γ−Reθ transition turbulence model was used for the analysis. Our research has shown that a... [more]

Effect of Sparger Characteristics on Bubble-Formation Dynamics under Oscillatory Air Pattern
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: bubble size, coalescence, oscillatory air pattern, sparger configuration
The size of bubbles generated from a porous sparger is at least an order of magnitude larger than the pore diameter under the steady air pattern. Recent studies have shown that the bubble size can be significantly reduced when the steady air flow is replaced by an oscillatory pattern. However, the effectiveness of oscillatory air flow on reducing bubble size under different sparger characteristics is yet to be studied. This work fundamentally investigates the response of bubble size to sparger characteristics under an oscillatory air pattern by segregating the bubble formation subprocesses into bubble detachment and consequent coalescence. The results show that bubble size significantly decreased with hydrophilic plates regardless of contact angle, owing to depressed coalescence, while no impact was observed for a hydrophobic plate. The influence of the oscillatory air pattern on decreasing bubble size was weakened as the chamber volume was increased, and above a critical volume the bu... [more]

Review of Particle Filters for Internal Combustion Engines
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: deposition, diesel particulate filter, gasoline particulate filter, pressure drop, regeneration
Diesel engines have gradually become one of the main forces in the human transportation industry because of their high efficiency, good durability, and stable operation. However, compared with gasoline vehicles, the high emission of diesel vehicles forces manufacturers to introduce new pollutant control technologies. Although the particulate matter emissions of gasoline vehicles are lower than that of diesel vehicles, with the popularity of gasoline vehicles and the continuous rise of power, the impact of these particles on the environment cannot be ignored. Therefore, diesel particulate filters and gasoline particulate filters have been invented to collect the fine particles in the exhaust gas to protect the environment and meet increasingly stringent emission regulations. This paper summarizes the research progress on diesel particulate filters and gasoline particulate filters at present and comprehensively introduces the diesel particulate filter and gasoline particulate filter from... Thermal Operation Maps for Lamm−Honigmann Thermo-Chemical Energy Storage—A Quasi-Stationary Model for Process Analysis
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: absorption storage, Carnot battery, control strategy, storage and conversion, storage capacity, storage efficiency, thermal operation map, thermochemical energy storage
The Lamm−Honigmann energy storage is a sorption-based storage that can be arbitrarily charged and discharged with both heat and electrical power. The mechanical charging and discharging processes of this storage are characterized by an internal heat transfer between the main components, absorber/desorber and evaporator/condenser, that is driven by the working-fluid mass transferred between those components with the help of an expansion or compression device, respectively. In this paper, thermal operation maps for the mechanical charging and discharging processes are developed from energy balances in order to predict power output and storage efficiency depending on the system state, which, in particular, is defined by the mass flow rate of vapor and the salt mass fraction of the absorbent. The conducted method is applied for the working-fluid pair LiBr/H2O. In a first step, a thermal efficiency is defined to account for second-order losses due to the internal heat transfer; e.g., for di... [more]

The focus of the experimental work was on shallow spiral geothermal heat exchanger configurations. Real-scale experiments were carried out for vertically oriented spiral collectors (helix) in sand and soil. One objective was to develop a measurement concept in laboratory environment to create a framework for a validated database. This database serves as the basis for further and new development of engineering design tools. To achieve the highest possible data-point density in the observed environment, temperature sensors and a fiber-optic temperature measurement system (DTS) were used. Soil probes were taken in situ before and after the measurements and analyzed at a thermophysical laboratory to determine material properties. The heat flow was controlled by an electric heating cable, which was installed in the form of a spiral-shaped heat exchanger in a 1 m³ container. To guarantee constant boundary conditions, the measurements were carried out in a climate chamber at a defined ambient... [more]

Performance Characteristics of In-Line Oil Separator with Various Airfoil Vane Configurations of the Axial-Flow Swirl Generator
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: in-line oil separator, internal swirl element, NACA airfoil
Recently, as the industry develops, global energy consumption has been increasing. Power generation using various energy sources is used to meet energy consumption. The demand for renewable energy resources is increasing as well as the demand for fossil fuels. However, fossil fuel reserves offshore are limited, and the continued resource development is causing the depletion of fossil fuels. Accordingly, there is a demand for resource development not only offshore but also in the deep sea. In order to efficiently separate water and oil, it is necessary to study a compact in-line oil separator. In this study, the oil−water separation characteristics according to various airfoil vane configurations of the in-line type oil separator are numerically calculated. The maximum camber and location of the maximum camber of the NACA(National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics) airfoil model were selected as design parameters. As a result, the maximum separation efficiency of 63.9% was predicted wh... [more]

Study on the Temporal and Spatial Multiscale Coupling Flow of Shale Oil
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: desorption, dynamic coupling, Fick’s diffusion, spatial distribution diagram, time delay effect, time scale analysis
Shale oil is one of the world’s most important strategic energy reserves. The microscopic kerogen and matrix structure plays an important role in fluid flow and diffusion processes. The oil flow time in the shale reservoir is determined by the pore spatial scale. An accurate shale reservoir flow model must consider these factors. In this research, fluid flow, Fick’s diffusion in consideration of the time delay effect, desorption, as well as the absorption are considered using the molecular momentum correlation and the partial pressure law of the components. The effect of the above-mentioned factors on the time scale contribution of the well rate is discussed. The spatial distribution diagram of the time scale is constructed and analyzed. The results show that the production process is composed of five periods. The time delay effect is reflected by fluctuations in the production at periods 1−3. The time scale corresponds to different mediums. The oil mainly flows through the outer bound... [more]

Intelligent Prediction Model (IPM) of Foundation Pit Displacement Based on Extreme Learning Machine (ELM) and Its Application
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: attribute reduction, average influence value algorithm, extreme learning machine, foundation pit deformation
In order to effectively predict the dynamic displacement and disaster, according to the analysis of the influencing parameters affecting the deformation of a subway foundation pit supported by piles (walls), the rough set attribute reduction method (RSARM) and the average influence value algorithm (AIVA) are used to simplify the influencing factors of foundation pit deformation. Those simplified factors are taken as the input of the ELM, with the output being the displacement of the foundation pit. Finally, the IPM of foundation pit displacement derived from the ELM is obtained, which is finally used for engineering practice. The results show that it is feasible to simplify the influencing factors of the deformation of the foundation pit by RSARM and AIVA. The proposed IPM of foundation pit displacement has high accuracy and good generalization ability, which can be used for the deformation prediction.

Evolution Prediction of Hysteresis Behavior of Sand under Cyclic Loading
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: cyclic degradation, decoupling method, hysteresis response, sand
Soil cyclic degradation is a serious issue that should be considered in engineering design and maintenance. The hysteretic response causes strength degradation and excessive settlement of soil structure in engineered and natural geosystems. Hysteresis is essentially the coupling deformation of elastic and plastic components during reloading and unloading processes. Conventional hysteretic models for sand in the elastoplastic framework rely highly on yield surface or potential surface evolution and fall short on complexity and inaccuracy. This study proposes a decoupling method to describe the hysteretic response of sand. In contrast to the conventional elastoplastic approach, this decoupling method can directly decouple the elastic and plastic components by determining the boundary between the elastic strain extension domain and the plastic strain extension domain for each stress cycle. In this way, the elastic and plastic stress−strain branches during cyclic loading can be separately... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: coal seam, collapse of a roof, cutting width, longwall, mining depth, support, underground mining
Based on both theoretical and practical experiences, the measures aimed at controlling emergency shutdowns of stopes have been highlighted. These stopes are connected with the emergency rigid settlements of powered complexes. In terms of the Western Donbas mines, there are certain risks of a shutdown of stopping operations within the zone of primary roof caving. Thus, the causes of emergency rigid settlements of the support may include the following: layers of the main roof rocks are hanging and not timely delaminated; sudden changes in lithology; hydraulic overloading of the main roof; structural flaws of support under certain conditions of its use, etc. In this paper, the theoretical method of scientific cognition was applied, which, with its help, makes it possible to switch from single low-efficiency measures to a set of actions aimed at preventing any uncontrolled situation. Using Periphyton Assemblage and Water Quality Variables to Assess the Ecological Recovery of an Ecologically Engineered Wetland Affected by Acid Mine Drainage after a Dry Spell
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: acid mine drainage, drought, eutrophication, metal removal, passive treatment process, periphyton, valley bottom wetland
The Grootspruit valley bottom wetland in South Africa, due to the impact of acid mine drainage (AMD) from an abandoned coal mine, was severely degraded before ecologically engineered interventions, as a passive treatment process, in 2014. The surface water flow of the wetland was redirected using concrete structures to enlarge the surface area of the wetland by 9.4 ha and to optimize passive treatment. Although the ecologically engineered interventions showed an improvement in water quality after the rewetting of the enlarged wetland areas, the 2016 drought had a devastating effect on the wetland’s water quality. Limited natural removal of metals and sulfate concentrations by the wetland occurred during the 2016 drought, when compared with the 2015 pre-drought conditions. This period showed higher concentrations of metals, sulfate (SO42−), and electrical conductivity (EC) associated with the acidic surface water. Of particular interest was an observation of a substantial shift in pollu... [more]

Keywords: additives, emissions, Ethanol, lube oil, metal particles, performance
Over the years, due to the surge in energy demand, the use of alternative fuels has emerged as an interesting area of research. In the current work, a comparative study was conducted by employing gasoline, 6% ethanol−gasoline (E6), and 12% ethanol−gasoline (E12) in a spark-ignition engine. Performance, emissions, and lube oil damage tests were conducted at a constant load by varying engine speed. E12 showed improved performance, i.e., 7.82% higher torque and 14.69% improved brake thermal efficiency (BTE) in comparison with neat gasoline. In addition, CO, CO2, HC, and NOx emissions were found to be minimal for E12. Furthermore, lubricating oil properties (kinematic viscosity, flash point, and total base number (TBN)) and wear debris (iron, aluminum, and copper) showed a visibly improved performance with gasoline compared to E6 and E12. The highest decline in kinematic viscosity of 27.87%, compared to fresh oil, was recorded for E12. Thus, the lube oil properties have to be modified acco... [more]

Carbon dioxide (CO2) electroreduction offers an attractive pathway for converting CO2 to valuable fuels and chemicals. Despite the existence of some excellent electrocatalysts with superior selectivity for specific products, these reactions are conducted at low current densities ranging from several mA cm−2 to tens of mA cm−2, which are far from commercially desirable values. To extend the applications of CO2 electroreduction technology to an industrial scale, long-term operations under high current densities (over 200 mA cm−2) are desirable. In this paper, we review recent major advances toward higher current density in CO2 reduction, including: (1) innovations in electrocatalysts (engineering the morphology, modulating the electronic structure, increasing the active sites, etc.); (2) the design of electrolyzers (membrane electrode assemblies, flow cells, microchannel reactors, high-pressure cells, etc.); and (3) the influence of electrolytes (concentration, pH, anion and cation effec... Shale Gas Productivity Prediction Model Considering Time-Dependent Fracture Conductivity
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: fracturing horizontal wells, production prediction, shale gas, time-dependent fracture conductivity
Conventional shale gas productivity prediction techniques consider fracture conductivity to be a fixed value, but in actual production processes, conductivity changes with time. Therefore, this paper proposed a capacity prediction method that considers time-dependent conductivity and validates its accuracy using commercial simulators. First, relevant parameters were obtained by fitting the improved long-term conductivity test, and then the shale gas seepage model was established using the EDFM method. The laboratory test results showed that the order of significance affecting the conductivity retention rate was fracturing fluid viscosity > sand concentration > fracturing fluid retention time; the calculation results of the production prediction model show that the flow and the pressure curves that corresponded to constant conductivity and variable conductivity were to some extent different. A Biorefinery Approach to Biodiesel Production from Castor Plants
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: biodiesel, biorefinery, Ricinus communis
The high consumption of fossil fuels has significant environmental implications. An alternative to reduce the use of fossil fuels and develop ecological and economic processes is the bio-refinery approach. In the present study, the authors present the production of biodiesel from castor plants through a biorefinery approach. The process includes sub-processes associated with the integral use of castor plants, such as biodiesel production, oil extraction, fertilizer, and solid biomass production. Economic analyses show that producing only biodiesel is not feasible, but economic indicators (NPV, IRR, and profitability index) show it is much more feasible to establish businesses for the valorization of products and subproducts of castor plants, such as biomass densification. The internal rate return for the second scenario (E2) was 568%, whereas, for the first scenario (E1), it was not possible to obtain a return on investment.

This article presents the results of experimental studies of asynchronous motors with a short-circuited rotor (induction motors—IM) with the most common frequency control methods: scalar; vector control; vector with speed control circuit; scalar control with dynamic compensation. The purpose of the experiments was to identify and show the features of the reaction of these control methods to the stepped sketches of the load on the asynchronous electric drive, as in a nonlinear electromechanical system. When selecting the parameters and settings of the “Schneider electric” frequency converter settings, standard instructions and techniques have been used, so the settings of the regulators were not optimal. The aim was not to determine the most effective structures and show fundamentally new solutions. Asynchronous electric motors are substantially nonlinear structures.
