Status Quo, Development and Utilization Efficiencies of Wind Power in China
February 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: data envelopment analysis, efficiency measurement, wind power development, wind power utilization
As a kind of green and pollution-free renewable energy, wind energy has great development prospects. How to promote the development of the wind power industry and improve the efficiency of wind power development and utilization is an urgent problem that needs to be solved. On the basis of analyzing the current situation of China’s power development, especially wind power development, a data envelopment analysis (DEA) method was used to analyze China’s wind power development and utilization efficiencies from 2005 to 2020. The results show that the development efficiency of China’s wind power was mainly affected by pure technical efficiency, while the utilization efficiency of China’s wind power was mainly affected by scale efficiency. Therefore, when considering wind power development, the management of wind power development should be strengthened, in order to realize the optimal allocation of resources. In terms of wind power utilization, the output scale of wind power utilization sho... [more]

February 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: gingko shells, N-doped carbon nanosheet, oxygen reduction reaction, Zn–air battery
Developing superior efficient and durable oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysts is critical for high-performance fuel cells and metal−air batteries. Herein, we successfully prepared a 3D, high-level nitrogen-doped, metal-free (N−pC) electrocatalyst employing urea as a single nitrogen source, NaCl as a fully sealed nanoreactor and gingko shells, a biomass waste, as carbon precursor. Due to the high content of active nitrogen groups, large surface area (1133.8 m2 g−1), and 3D hierarchical porous network structure, the as-prepared N−pC has better ORR electrocatalytic performance than the commercial Pt/C and most metal-free carbon materials in alkaline media. Additionally, when N−pC was used as a catalyst for an air electrode, the Zn−air battery (ZAB) had higher peak power density (223 mW cm−2), larger specific-capacity (755 mAh g−1) and better rate-capability than the commercial Pt/C-based one, displaying a good application prospect in metal-air batteries.

Effects of Chemical Properties and Inherent Mineral Matters on Pyrolysis Kinetics of Low-Rank Coals
February 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: chemical properties, inherent mineral matters, kinetics, low-rank coals, pyrolysis
The kinetics during the pyrolysis process depend on both chemical structure and inherent mineral matters in coal, but normally, only one of these components is investigated in literature. In the present work, four low-rank coals were pyrolyzed in a thermogravimetric analyzer at a heating rate of 10 K/min in a constant nitrogen stream at a temperature up to 900 °C to study the pyrolysis behavior and kinetics. Two of the samples were raw coal (R-YL) and clean coal (C-YL) obtained through the washing process. The results showed that the coal-washing process mainly affected the inorganic part (mineral matters) and structure in coal, which did not largely change the chemical properties. The pyrolysis behavior in primary stage (before 550 °C) was mainly affected by the chemical properties of coal, while the pyrolysis behavior in higher temperature also depended on inherent mineral matters. The kinetics of four coals were obtained using the Coats−Redfern (CR) method with five theoretical mode... [more]

Development of Hardware-in-the-Loop-Simulation Testbed for Pitch Control System Performance Test
February 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: collective pitch control, hardware-in-the-loop-simulation testbed, individual pitch control, pitch control system, wind turbine
This paper deals with the development of a wind turbine pitch control system and the construction of a Hardware-in-the-Loop-Simulation (HILS) testbed for the performance test of the pitch control system. When the wind speed exceeds the rated wind speed, the wind turbine pitch controller adjusts the blade pitch angles collectively to ensure that the rotor speed maintains the rated rotor speed. The pitch controller with the individual pitch control function can add individual pitch angles into the collective pitch angles to reduce the mechanical load applied to the blade periodically due to wind shear. Large wind turbines often experience mechanical loads caused by wind shear phenomena. To verify the performance of the pitch control system before applying it to an actual wind turbine, the pitch control system is tested on the HILS testbed, which acts like an actual wind turbine system. The testbed for evaluating the developed pitch control system consists of the pitch control system, a r... [more]

An Energy Potential Estimation Methodology and Novel Prototype Design for Building-Integrated Wind Turbines
February 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: anemometer, building integrated wind turbine, calibration, ERA5, savonius
ROSEO-BIWT is a new Building-Integrated Wind Turbine (BIWT) intended for installation on the edge of buildings. It consists of a Savonius wind turbine and guiding vanes to accelerate the usual horizontal wind, together with the vertical upward air stream on the wall. This edge effect improves the performance of the wind turbine, and its architectural integration is also beneficial. The hypothetical performance and design configuration were studied for a university building in Eibar city using wind data from the ERA5 reanalysis (European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts’ reanalysis), an anemometer to calibrate the data, and the actual small-scale behavior in a wind tunnel. The data acquired by the anemometer show high correlations with the ERA5 data in the direction parallel to the valley, and the calibration is therefore valid. According to the results, a wind speed augmentation factor of three due to the edge effect and concentration vanes would lead to a increase in working... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: coupling transportation system, offshore wind turbine (OWT), prototype observation, structural motion characteristics, suction bucket foundation, the integrated transportation
The offshore wind turbine (OWT) supported by bucket foundations can be installed in the integrated transportation process by a dedicated vessel. During the integrated transportation process, the wind turbine is considered as a coupling system with the transport ship, which is easily influenced by waves and storms. In view of the motion response and influential factors, the heave and rock stiffness of the entire floating system was proposed, and then the analytical dynamic motion model of the coupling system was established based on the movement mechanism of the traditional floating body in the wave in this paper. Subsequently, the rationality of the proposed motion model was verified based on the field observation data, with the maximum deviation of the motion responses less than 14%. Further, the influence on the heave and pitch motion of the coupling system considering different factors (vessel speed, wave height, wind speed and wave angle) and the factor sensitivity were discussed b... Volumetric Measurements of Methane-Coal Adsorption and Desorption Isotherms—Effects of Equations of State and Implication for Initial Gas Reserves
February 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: adsorption and desorption isotherms, equation of state, gas compressibility factors, medium volatile bituminous coal, NIST-Refprop, original gas in-place, sorption hysteresis
This study presents the effects of equations of state (EOSs) on methane adsorption capacity, sorption hysteresis and initial gas reserves of a medium volatile bituminous coal. The sorption experiments were performed, at temperatures of 25 °C and 40 °C and up to 7MPa pressure, using a high-pressure volumetric analyzer (HPVA-II). The measured isotherms were parameterized with the modified (three-parameter) Langmuir model. Gas compressibility factors were calculated using six popular equations of state and the results were compared with those obtained using gas compressibility factors from NIST-Refprop® (which implies McCarty and Arp’s EOS for Z-factor of helium and Setzmann and Wagner’s EOS for that of methane). Significant variations were observed in the resulting isotherms and associated model parameters with EOS. Negligible hysteresis was observed with NIST-refprop at both experimental temperatures, with the desorption isotherm being slightly lower than the adsorption isotherm at 25 °... [more]

When the new student center at Stockholm University in Sweden was completed in the fall of 2013 it was thoroughly instrumented. The 6300 m2 four-story building with offices, a restaurant, study lounges, and meeting rooms was designed to be energy efficient with a planned total energy use of 25 kWh/m2/year. Space heating and hot water are provided by a ground source heat pump (GSHP) system consisting of five 40 kW off-the-shelf water-to-water heat pumps connected to 20 boreholes in hard rock, drilled to a depth of 200 m. Space cooling is provided by direct cooling from the boreholes. This paper uses measured performance data from Studenthuset to calculate the actual thermal performance of the GSHP system during one of its early years of operation. Monthly system coefficients-of-performance and coefficients-of-performance for both heating and cooling operation are presented. In the first months of operation, several problems were corrected, leading to improved performance. This paper pro... [more]

Energy Consumption and Trade Openness Nexus in Egypt: Asymmetry Analysis
February 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: asymmetrical effects, economic growth, energy consumption, trade openness
Trade openness may support the economic growth of any country but its environmental effects due to increasing energy consumption cannot be ignored. This research hypothesizes the asymmetrical effects of both economic growth and trade openness on the energy consumption of Egypt from 1971−2014. Our estimates suggest that both economic growth and trade openness have asymmetrical effects on the energy consumption in both long and short runs because magnitude of the effects are found unequal. Both increasing and decreasing economic growth have positive effects on the energy consumption in the long and short runs except an insignificant effect of decreasing economic growth in the short run. Increasing and decreasing trade openness have also positive effects on the energy consumption in the long and short runs except an insignificant effect of decreasing trade openness in the long run. The increasing energy consumption, as results of increasing economic growth and/or trade openness, may have... [more]

Effect of Actual Gas Turbine Operating Conditions on Mist/Steam Cooling Performance in a Ribbed Passage
February 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: heat transfer enhancement, internal cooling channel, mist/steam cooling, numerical simulation
This study numerically examines the effect of actual gas turbine operating conditions on heat transfer characteristics in a ribbed passage with mist/steam cooling. A 60° ribbed passage with aspect ratio of 1/1 was investigated at Reynolds number of 300,000, and steam cooling was used to provide a contrast. Three main factors were considered: coolant temperature, operating pressure, and wall heat flux density. The heat transfer enhancement mechanism of mist/steam cooling was explored, and the results showed that the heat transfer performance of mist/steam cooling was superior to steam cooling. When the coolant temperature varied from 300 to 500 °C, the average Nusselt number of mist/steam cooling decreased by 26.6%, and the heat transfer enhancement ratio dropped from 15% to 10%. As operating pressure increased, the heat transfer performance factor of mist/steam firstly increased and then decreased. At an operating pressure of 1.5 MPa, the heat transfer achieved its optimal performance,... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: buck-boost inverter, MPPT, multi-input inverters, PV
This paper presents a multi-input Ćuk-derived Buck-Boost voltage source inverter (CBBVSI) for Photovoltaic (PV) systems. The proposed topology consists of a single-stage DC-AC inverter that combines both DC-DC and DC-AC stages. The DC-DC stage is used for stepping-up the voltage from the PV generator. Simultaneously, the DC-AC stage is used for interfacing the PV source with the AC grid. The topology allows three sources to utilize the antiparallel diodes for each inverter leg for transferring the energy. The proposed system exhibits several features such as a reduction of the number of components compared to typical two-stage structures, and Split-Source Inverter (SSI), and Z-Source Inverter (ZSI) topologies. Moreover, the power of each PV source can be harvested either simultaneously or separately since independent Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) is performed. A Zero-Dimensional Mixing Controlled Combustion Model for Real Time Performance Simulation of Marine Two-Stroke Diesel Engines
February 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: marine two-stroke diesel engine, mixing controlled combustion model, performance simulation, real-time modeling
The paper presents a performance prediction model of marine low-speed two-stroke diesel engines based on an advanced MCC (mixture controlled combustion) model coupled with a fuel injection model. Considering the time of real calculation, the so-called “concentrated exhausting gas” scavenging model and the working process model are used in the present work, and improved by introducing the ratio of pure combustion product over the total gas mass in the cylinder as an expression of the working medium components. The reaction rate model in the zero-dimensional MCC model is improved by introducing the fraction of combustion product in the fuel spray, and the relationship between the combustion model and scavenging quality is established. Meanwhile, the combustion model was simplified in the diffusion combustion phases and integrated with the fuel injection model in order to respond to the change of injection profile and injection timing. A large-scale low-speed marine diesel engine was used... [more]

Methane Emission during Gas and Rock Outburst on the Basis of the Unipore Model
February 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: hard coal, methane emission, outburst, unipore model
The goal of this paper is to analyze the phenomenon of gas emission during a methane and coal outburst based on the unipore Crank diffusion model for spherical grains and plane sheets. Two occurrences in the Upper Silesian Coal Basin were analyzed: an outburst in a Zofiówka coal mine in 2005 and an outburst in a Budryk coal mine in 2012. Those two outbursts differed considerably. The first one was connected with an unidentified tectonic disturbance in the form of a triple, interlocking fault, and the other one is an example of an outburst in an area free from tectonic disturbances. The model analysis required laboratory tests in order to determine the sorption properties of coals from post-outburst masses. Sorption isotherms and the values of the effective diffusion coefficient were specified. The post-outburst masses were subjected to sieve analysis and the grain composition curves were plotted. The researchers also used the measurement data provided by proper mine services, such as t... [more]

Large Scale Renewable Energy Integration: Issues and Solutions
February 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: energy storage system, frequency, grid integration, renewable energy sources, voltage
In recent years, many applications have been developed for the integration of renewable energy sources (RES) into the grid in order to satisfy the demand requirement of a clean and reliable electricity generation. Increasing the number of RES creates uncertainty in load and power supply generation, which also presents an additional strain on the system. These uncertainties will affect the voltage and frequency variation, stability, protection, and safety issues at fault levels. RES present non-linear characteristics, which requires effective coordination control methods. This paper presents the stability issues and solutions associated with the integration of RES within the grid.

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: elastic light scattering, fuel comparison, laser-induced incandescence, pre-vaporized diesel combustion
In the present work, a novel burner capable of complete pre-vaporization and stationary combustion of diesel fuel in a laminar diffusion flame has been developed to investigate the effect of the chemical composition of diesel fuel on soot formation. For the characterization of soot formation during diesel combustion we performed a comprehensive morphological characterization of the soot and determined its concentration by coupling elastic light scattering (ELS) and laser-induced incandescence (LII) measurements. With ELS, radii of gyration of aggregates were measured within a point-wise measurement volume, LII was employed in an imaging approach for a 2D-analysis of the soot volume fraction. We carried out LII and ELS measurements at different positions in the flame for two different fuel types, revealing the effects of small modifications of the fuel composition on soot emission during diesel combustion.

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: combustion, Diesel, droplet, micro-explosion, viscosity, water-diesel emulsion
Diesel fuel exhibits excellent combustion characteristics and stability. However, diesel use is becoming restricted because of its associated environmental problems. Fuel emulsification, which increases efficiency and reduces pollution, became the solution of environmental problem. In this study, five water:diesel emulsions with mass ratios (0.3, 0.6, 1.0, 1.2, and 1.5) via ultrasonication were synthesized with and without surfactant. The optimal water:diesel ratio (=1:1) of an emulsion containing the surfactant was found by analyzing fuel concentration, mixing time, and viscosity. The combustion characteristics of single-droplet optimal emulsions were studied through ignition delay, burning rate, and total droplet lifetime at high temperature (400−700 °C) and pressure (1−15 bar), and micro-explosion phenomenon was observed. Although the ignition delay of emulsion increased, the total lifetime of the emulsion droplet was lower than that of diesel under 5 bar, 600 °C condition.

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: electronic circuit, experimental realization, hysteresis, throttle emulator, wind turbine pitch control
Pitch control is a relevant issue in wind turbines to properly operate the angle of the blades. Therefore, this control system pitches the blades usually a few degrees every time the wind changes in order to keep the rotor blades at the required angle thus controlling the rotational speed of the turbine. All the same time, the control of the pitch angle is not easy due to the system behavior being highly nonlinear. Consequently, the main objective of this paper is to depict an easy to implement control design based on a proportional controller and a hysteretic term to an emulator pitch control system in wind turbines. This emulator is just an automotive throttle device. This mechanical body dynamically captures some hard non-linearities presented in pitch wind turbine mechanisms, such as backlash, asymmetrical non-lineal effects, friction, and load variations.
