April 11, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: electrostatic precipitator, nucleation, particulate matter, pollution control, small-scale boiler
This paper investigates the removal efficiency of a honeycomb electrostatic precipitator (ESP) applied to control particulate matter (PM) emissions from a small-scale boiler with combustion lignite and hard coal. The specifics of the precipitation of emissions from small-scale boilers are discussed, and the design principles for relevant ESPs are presented and used. The ion-induced nucleation of sulfuric acid occurred, causing the drastic penetration of 19 nm particles through the ESP. Despite this, the overall collection efficiency was sufficient to meet the EU’s Ecodesign Directive requirements. Back corona was not detected. The optimal ESP performance is defined with further parameters: a current density of 0.5 mA/m2 at an electric field strength of about 2.7 × 105 V/m; a minimal specific collecting area of ESP (SCA) of 60 m2/(m3/s); and Nt-product of 4.5 × 1014 s/m3. Such parameters of ESPs should ensure adequate PM emissions control for any type of boiler with similar emissions ch... [more]

Keywords: layered kMC simulation, long short-term memory, Machine Learning, Model Predictive Control, Multiscale Modelling, pulp digester
The growing demand for various types of paper highlights the importance of optimizing the kraft pulping process to achieve desired paper properties. This work proposes a novel multiscale model to optimize the kraft pulping process and obtain desired paper properties. The model combines mass and energy balance equations with a layered kinetic Monte Carlo (kMC) algorithm to predict the degradation of wood chips, the depolymerization of cellulose, and the spatio-temporal evolution of the Kappa number and cellulose degree of polymerization (DP). A surrogate LSTM-ANN model is trained on data generated from the multiscale model under different operating conditions, dealing with both time-varying and time-invariant inputs, and an LSTM-ANN-based model predictive controller is designed to achieve desired set-point values of the Kappa number and cellulose DP while considering process constraints. The results show that the LSTM-ANN-based controller is able to drive the process to desired set-poin... [more]

Keywords: decision tree method, mine cable insulation degradation, online insulation monitoring
Real-time monitoring of the power cable state has tremendous significance for ensuring the safe and economic operation of mine power distribution systems. However, due to the harsh conditions of underground coal mines, it is difficult for the cable monitoring system operating in underground coal mines to carry out large-scale calculations to diagnose the grounding fault of the cable. Additionally, there are many types of cable grounding faults, such as single grounding fault and two-phase ground fault. Therefore, how to determine the type of grounding fault quickly through effective calculations and alarms to select the grounding cable is always a difficult task. In this study, to reduce the complexity of cable insulation state classification, we develop a novel classification method based on the decision tree algorithm. Concerning the zero-sequence network under different insulation conditions, the first calculation’s positive and negative values were generated to identify whether the... [more]

April 11, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: calculation model, ion–molecule coexistence theory, LF refining slag, optimal alkalinity
The fatigue life of bearing steel is closely related to the total oxygen content (T(O)) of the liquid steel. In order to stably and effectively control the T(O) during the ladle furnace (LF) refining process, we established a calculation model of optimal alkalinity for the refining slag CaO−SiO2−Al2O3−MgO−FeO−CaF2 at 1853 K based on ion−molecule coexistence theory (IMCT). Here, the influencing factors are discussed. The results show that the maximum value of NFeO occurred when the optimal alkalinity was around five at varied FeO contents, and that the optimal alkalinity basically remained the same with changes in FeO content. With the increase of MgO content, the optimal alkalinity decreased. However, the change in the value of NFeO against the higher alkalinity was not obvious at a given MgO content. The effect of Al2O3 content on the optimal alkalinity was opposite to that of MgO. With the increasing Al2O3 content, the optimal alkalinity obviously increased, while the maximum value o... [more]

Keywords: adipogenesis, leptin-PPARγ-FAS, obesity, Pachyrhizus erosus
In 2016, obese patients represented 13% of the worldwide adult population, and by 2030, they are projected to make up 34%. Obesity is an incommunicable disease, but it can induce many health problems. The groups consisted of a control, a 65% high-fat group, and a 250 mg/kg P. erosus group. Several biomarkers, such as body weight gain, the presence of TC/LDL/HDL in the serum, the weight of fat tissue, and liver weight/morphology, were investigated to define the anti-obesity mechanisms of P. erosus, and the adipogenesis pathway was studied. P. erosus suppressed body weight gain, decreased TC and LDL, prevented fat tissue weight gain, and prevented liver weight gain by blocking lipid droplet accumulation. P. erosus effectively decreased the up-regulated levels of leptin, significantly controlled both C/EBPα and PPARγ levels, and prevented increased FAS expression levels. We concluded that P. erosus effectively controlled obesity by regulating leptin-C/EBPα-PPARγ and FAS and might be a pro... [more]

Keywords: curing technology, leaf quality, temperature control, tobacco curing, upper-stalk leaves
The control of the curing temperature during the stem-drying stage is important for the quality of upper leaves of flue-cured tobacco. Based on the conventional curing process during the yellowing stage and the leaf0drying stage in the tobacco curing process, in this study, the dry-bulb temperature was increased to 72 and 75 °C in the bulk curing barn during the stem-drying stage to compare with the highest temperature of 68 °C commonly adopted in the bulk curing barn. The result showed that, compared with the conventional temperature setting, the energy consumption cost was reduced by 0.10 or 0.08 USD/kg when the curing temperature was increased to 72 or 75 °C, respectively. Statistical analysis showed that increasing DBT was beneficial to the improvement in the internal quality of flue-cured tobacco leaves. The adjustment of curing temperature also improved the aromatic quality and volume of singe-material tobacco leaves. However, as the temperature continued to increase, the quality... [more]

Keywords: control reconfiguration, discrete event systems, distributed control, fault tolerant control, manufacturing systems
Manufacturing systems (MS) have become increasingly complex due to constraints induced by a changing environment, such as flexibility, availability, competition, and key performance indicators. This change has led to a need for flexible systems capable of adapting to production changes while meeting productivity and quality criteria and reducing the risk of failures. This paper provides a methodology for designing reconfigurable and fault-tolerant control for implementation in a Programmable Logic Controller (PLC). The main contribution of this methodology is based on a safe control synthesis founded on timed properties. If a sensor fault is detected, the controller switches from normal behavior to a degraded one, where timed information replaces the information lost from the faulty sensor. Switching between normal and degraded behaviors is ensured through reconfiguration rules. The primary objective of this method is to implement the obtained control into a PLC. In order to achieve th... [more]

Keywords: cluster, control, gas injection, high pressure, remote terminal, supervision
The objective of this research was to develop a technological architecture proposal that allows for the supervision and control of the operational parameters of gas injection (flow, temperature, and pressure) in a cluster of a high-pressure gas injection plant. The proposal provides a supervision and control system for the HPGIP I high-pressure gas injection plant that includes instrumentation equipment (transmitters and actuators), a remote terminal unit (RTU) as a control device, and the creation of a control logic as the basis for the development of the SCADA GALBA®, through which the operational variables involved in the process of the gas injection plant can be visualized and controlled, allowing the automatic regulation of the flow of gas that enters the deposits. Automatization of the process allows for the elimination of the average error differential that increases from 2 to 5% when the control valve is opened manually. Currently, the MUC-67 and MUC-68 wells that make up clust... [more]

Keywords: fuzzy logic, overshoot, PID controller tuning, settling time
Proportional−integral−derivative controllers are applied for solving a wide range of problems in industrial processes. They are preferred over computational techniques because of their implementation simplicity, low cost, and robustness against noise. In this paper, a novel iterative feedback tuning method is proposed using fuzzy logic, where the design parameters proposed by the user are the desired plant overshoot and settling time. In contrast to classical methods, the proposed technique does not require a precise and complex mathematical model for tuning the proportional−integral−derivative controllers through the plant, nor does it need an expert who knows the precise behavior of the system as in methods based on computational techniques. Furthermore, unlike iterative feedback tuning methods that use cost functions and require several experiments to perform the iterations, this proposal uses fuzzy logic to update the controller parameters, which facilitates its implementation in p... Keywords: cluster control strategy, demand side management (DSM), load data analysis, PCM storage, rural home hotels
The large-scale rural home hotel clusters have brought huge pressure to the rural power grid. However, the load of rural home hotels not only has the inherent characteristics of rural residential buildings but is also greatly impacted by the occupancy rate, which is very different from conventional buildings. Therefore, the existing peak shifting strategies are difficult to apply to rural home hotels. In view of the above problems, this study took a typical visitor village in Zhejiang Province as the research object, which had more than 470 rural home hotels. First, through a basic information survey and power load data collection, the characteristics of its power load for heating, cooling and transition months were studied, and a “No Visitors Day” model was proposed, which was split to obtain the seasonal load curve for air conditioning. Then, combined with the characteristics of the air conditioning power load and the natural conditions of the rural house, a cluster control peak-load... [more]

Keywords: automated control, nitrogen protection device, PLC, spectrophotometric system, zinc hydrometallurgy
Due to the fast material reaction in zinc hydrometallurgy, the traditional national standard photometric method cannot capture the characteristic information of target substances in real time. Herein, a nitrogen protection device is built based on ultraviolet spectrophotometry, supplemented by a programmable logic controller (PLC), to form an automatic control system for the direct detection of target substances (SO42−, Pb2+ and S2−) in zinc hydrometallurgy. The baseline straightness comparison results show that the nitrogen atmosphere can effectively improve the stability of the instrument. Furthermore, the detection sensitivity of SO42−, Pb2+ and S2− under the nitrogen atmosphere is higher than that of the air atmosphere, manifesting in sensitivity increases of 16.23%, 18.05% and 17.91%, respectively. Additionally, devices based on PLC systems show advantages over manual control both in states feedback and information backtrack. Moreover, the regulation time and nitrogen consumption... [more]

Keywords: electric vehicle, hardware-in-the-loop, real-time, simulator
Electric vehicles are considered to be a greener and safer means of transport thanks to the distinguished advantages of electric motors. Studies on this object require experimental platforms for control validation purpose. Under the pressure of research, the development of these platforms must be reliable, safe, fast, and cost effective. To practically validate the control system, the controllers should be implemented in an on-board micro-controller platform; whereas, the vehicle model should be realized in a real-time emulator that behaves like the real vehicle. In this paper, we propose a signal hardware-in-the-loop simulation system for electric vehicles that are driven by four independent electric motors installed in wheels (in-wheel motor). The system is elaborately built on the basis of longitudinal, lateral, and yaw dynamics, as well as kinematic and position models, of which the characteristics are complete and comprehensive. The performance of the signal hardware-in-the-loop s... [more]

April 11, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: motion capture, robotic localization, wheeled mobile robot
The paper presents research on methods of a wheeled mobile robot localization using an optical motion capture system. The results of localization based on the model of forward kinematics and odometric measurements were compared. A pure pursuit controller was used to control the robot’s behaviour in the path following tasks. The paper describes a motion capture system based on infrared cameras, including the calibration method. In addition, a method for determining the accuracy of robot location using the motion capture system, based on the Hausdorff distance, was proposed. As a result of the research it was found that the Hausdorff distance is very useful in determining the accuracy of localization of wheeled robots, especially those described by differential drive kinematics.

Keywords: boost converters, DC–DC power converters, GaN switch, resonant power conversion, zero-current switching (ZCS), zero-voltage switching (ZVS)
This paper presents a concept for the operation of a resonant DC−DC switched-capacitor converter with very high efficiency and output voltage regulation. In its basic concept, such a converter operates as a switched-capacitor voltage doubler (SCVD) in the Zero Current Switching (ZCS) mode with a constant output voltage. The proposed methods of switching allow for the switched-capacitor (SC) converter output voltage regulation, and improve its efficiency by the operation with Zero Voltage Switching (ZVS). In this paper, various switching patterns are proposed to achieve high efficiency and the output voltage control by frequency or duty cycle regulation. Some examples of the application of the proposed switching patterns are presented: in current control at the start-up of the converter, in a bi-directional converter, and in a modular cascaded system. The paper also presents an analytical model as well as the relationships between the switching frequency, voltage ratio and efficiency. F... [more]

Keywords: BLDCM, crank-moving guide rod mechanism, fully variable valve actuation, motion control
With the problem of environmental pollution and energy shortage becoming more and more serious, the fuel efficiency of automobile engines has attracted much attention, and variable valve technology is one of the important technologies to solve this problem. A novel fully variable valve actuation (FVVA) system based on a brushless direct current motor (BLDCM) is designed to achieve fully variable valve adjustment. The system uses a crank-moving guide rod mechanism to convert the rotary motion of the BLDCM into the linear motion of the valve. The fully variable valve system can realize real-time continuous adjustment of valve operating parameters through the motion control of BLDCM, including variable valve timing, variable valve opening duration, and variable lift. A BLDCM and a transmission mechanism for the FVVA system is designed in this paper. In order to better analyze the performance of the system, a dynamic model is established. Then, a three closed-loop control method is adopted... [more]

Keywords: equipment withdrawal channel, plastic zone, stress distribution, surrounding rock control
The use of pre-excavation equipment withdrawal channels (EWCs) at the stop-production line is important for the rapid withdrawal of coal mining equipment. However, during the final mining period, the dynamic pressure of a pre-excavated double EWC is severe, which leads to instability of the surrounding rock around the EWCs. Therefore, in this paper, the methods of field monitoring, theoretical analysis, and numerical simulation were used to systematically study the stress and plastic zone evolution of a double EWC during the final mining period. Firstly, the distribution characteristics of mining abutment pressure and roadway failure modes under the action of mining abutment pressure were analyzed theoretically. Afterward, a FLAC3D mining numerical model was established according to the distribution of rock strata obtained from roof detection. Finally, the evolution laws of the stress fields and plastic zones of the EWCs during final mining were obtained by numerical simulation. The pr... [more]

Keywords: frequency adaptiveness, revised repetitive control (RRC), S–G filter, second order generalized integrator (SOGI), speed fluctuation
Repetitive operation is extensively present in the inverter compressor refrigeration field. Research illustrates that an approximate periodic load disturbance deteriorates its self-sensing and efficiency in a low frequency range. According to an internal model theorem, a repetitive controller can realize periodic signal tracking or suppression; however, ideal repetitive control (IRC) can not be directly employed in practical application owing to its excessive sensitivity to period-time uncertainties or aperiodic component, etc. In addition, the ratio between period delay to sampling time can not always maintain an integer which causes the resonant frequencies to deviate from the interested. Even if the ratio is a fixed integer, the auxiliary function for stabilization in a conventional repetitive controller can result in the steady state tracking error. In this paper, a revised repetitive controller with a novel Savitzky−Golay (S−G) filter is proposed, the S−G filter cascaded with a tr... [more]

Keywords: bentonite, gel formation, gel pill, viscous pill
During drilling of petroleum or geothermal wells, unforeseen circumstances occasionally happen that require suspension of the operation. When the drilling fluid is left in a static condition, solid material like barite may settle out of the fluid. Consequently, the induced hydrostatic pressure that the fluid exerts onto the formation will be reduced, possibly leading to collapse of the borehole or influx of liquid or gas. A possible mitigation action is placement of a gel pill. This gel pill should preferably be able to let settled barite rest on top of it and still transmit the hydrostatic pressure to the well bottom. A bentonite-based gel pill is developed, preventing flow of higher density drilling fluid placed above it to bypass the gel pill. Its rheological behavior was characterized prior to functional testing. The designed gel pill develops sufficient gel structure to accommodate the settled barite. The performance of the gel was tested at vertical and 40° inclination from verti... [more]

The lateral stability control of tractor semi-trailer plays a vital role for enhancing its driving safety, and the distributed electric drive structure of a hub motor creates opportunities and challenges for realising the lateral stability accurately. Based on the dynamics simulation software TruckSim, a nonlinear dynamic tractor semi-trailer model is established, and a MATLAB/Simulink linear three-degree-of-freedom monorail reference model is established. The upper controller adopts fuzzy proportional−integral−derivative control to export active yaw torque values of the tractor and semi-trailer. The lower controller outputs the driving/braking torque of each wheel according to the target wheel driving/braking rules and torque distribution rules. The tractor produce an active yaw torque through conventional differential braking the hub motor is installed on both sides of the semi-trailer, and the active yaw torque is produced by the coordinated control of the driving/braking torque of... The article presents an implementation of a low power Quasi-Cyclic Low-Density Parity-Check (QC-LDPC) decoder in a Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) device. The proposed solution is oriented to a reduction in dynamic energy consumption. The key research concepts present an effective technology mapping of a QC-LDPC decoder to an LUT-based FPGA with many limitations. The proposed decoder architecture uses a distributed control system and a Token Ring processing scheme. This idea helps limit the clock skew problem and is oriented to clock gating, a well-established concept for power optimization. Then the clock gating of the decoder building blocks allows for a significant reduction in energy consumption without deterioration in other parameters of the decoder, particularly its error correction performance. We also provide experimental results for decoder implementations with different QC-LDPC codes, indicating important characteristics of the code parity check matrix, for which an ene... [more]

Keywords: extension theory, fault-tolerant control, line current spectrum feature, smart fault diagnosis, three-level neutral-point clamped inverters
This paper presents an extension theory-based assessment method to perform fault diagnosis for inverters in motor driving systems. First, a three-level neutral-point clamped (NPC) inverter is created using the PSIM software package to simulate faults for any power transistor in the NPC-type inverter. Fast Fourier transformation is used to transform the line current signals in the time domain into a spectrum in the frequency domain for analysis of the corresponding spectrum of features of the inverter for faults with different power transistors. Then, the relationships between fault types and specific spectra are established as characteristics for the extension assessment method, which is then used to create a smart fault diagnosis system for inverters. Fault-tolerant control (FTC) is used here when the rated output of a faulty inverter is decreased in order to maintain balanced output in three phases by changing the framework of the transistor connection. This is performed to reinforce... [more]

April 11, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: compensation for nonactive current, power distribution, power quality, reverse power flow, UPQC, voltage regulation
This paper proposes a new control method for a Unified Power Quality Conditioner (UPQC). This method is based on the load equivalent conductance approach, originally proposed by Fryze. It can be useful not only for compensation for nonactive current and for improving voltage quality, but it also allows one to perform some unconventional functions. This control method can be performed by extending the orthodox notion of ‘static’ load equivalent conductance into a time-variable signal. It may be used to characterize energy changes in the whole UPQC-and-load circuitry. The UPQC can regulate energy flow between all sources and loads being under compensation. They may be located as well for UPQC’s AC-side as DC-side. System works properly even if they switch their activity to work either as loads or generators. The UPQC can operate also as a buffer, which can store/share the in-load generated energy amongst other loads, or it can transmit this energy to the source. Therefore, in addition to... [more]
