The Choice of the Optimal Number of Discs in an MR Clutch from the Viewpoint of Different Criteria and Constraints

This paper focuses on magnetorheological clutches (MR clutches) with a disc structure that can be designed as one-disc or multi-disc clutches (number of discs: N = 1, N > 2). The main goal of the paper is to compare their overall dimensions (lengths and radii), masses, volumes, and characteristic factors—torque per mass ratio and torque per volume ratio for MR clutches that develop the same given clutching torque Tc but differ in the number of discs (it is assumed that the number of discs of the primary member varies from one to four). This analysis develops charts and guidelines that will allow designers to choose the appropriate number of discs from the view point of various criteria, and with various limitations regarding geometry, geometric proportions, mass, volume, or restrictions on the amount of active materials used in the manufacturing process. Frequency Resolved Partial Discharges Based on Spectral Pulse Counting

A partial discharge (PD) classification methodology based counting PD pulses in the spectral domain is proposed and presented in this paper. The spectral counting data are processed using the proposed PD Spectral Pulse Counting Mapping technique (PD-SPCM), which leads to a Frequency-Resolved Partial Discharges (FRPD) map. The proposed map is then used for PD detection and classification. In this work, corona and slot FRPDs are presented in frequency bands up to 500 MHz, obtained from laboratory measurements performed using two hydro-generator stator bars. In this paper, an in-house model was developed to analyze the potential of a fully superconducting generator by integrating the electromagnetic design with the AC loss estimation. The increasing levels of energy consumption worldwide is raising issues with respect to surpassing supply limits, causing severe effects on the environment, and the exhaustion of energy resources. Buildings are one of the most relevant sectors in terms of energy consumption; as such, efficient Home or Building Management Systems are an important topic of research. This study discusses the use of ensemble techniques in order to improve the performance of artificial neural networks models used for energy forecasting in residential houses. The case study is a residential house, located in Portugal, that is equipped with PV generation and battery storage and controlled by a Home Energy Management System (HEMS). It has been shown that the ensemble forecasting results are superior to single selected models, which were already excellent. A simple procedure was proposed for selecting the models to be used in the ensemble, together with a heuristic to determine the number of models.

The CDI system works with two basic operations: adsorption and regeneration. During adsorption, water is desalted, and during the regeneration process the ions from electrodes are detached and flow out as wastewater, which is higher in salt concentration. This wastewater still contains water but cannot be treated again via the CDI unit because CDI cannot treat higher-salinity waters. The discarding of wastewater from CDI is not a good option, since every drop of water is precious. The analysis and performance evaluation of a harmonic reduction strategy of a non-overlap winding wound rotor synchronous machine is conducted in this paper. The harmonic reduction strategy utilizes phase-shifts between coil currents to reduce sub- and higher-order harmonics. The design is performed on a 3 MW wound rotor synchronous machine with a 16/18 pole/slot combination. The application results in a lowered torque ripple and an increased efficiency of the designed machine. Performance Assessment of Using Thermoelectric Generators for Waste Heat Recovery from Vapor Compression Refrigeration Systems

This article reports on an experimental analysis and performance assessment of using thermoelectric generators (TEGs) for waste heat recovery from residential vapor compression refrigeration systems. The analysis shows that there is a good opportunity for waste heat recovery using TEGs by de-superheating refrigerant after the compressor. Design and manufacturing of a de-superheater unit consisting of a tube and plate heat exchanger and thermoelectric generator modules (HE-TEGs) have been performed and integrated in an experimental test rig of R134a refrigeration cycle. Pressure piling requires the flameproof enclosures to withstand explosion pressure higher than the design pressure. In order to study the explosion parameters in a flameproof enclosure under pressure piling, two experimental setups were prepared based on the theoretical analysis of the mechanism of pressure piling. One setup simulated the condition that the interior of a flameproof box is isolated by a baffle with a small hole. This paper introduces and investigates a new design method that employs both teeth arrangement and pole−slot combination to reduce the detent force of permanent magnet linear synchronous motors (PMLSMs) for precision position control. The proposed topology is a 10-pole, 12-slot-based PMLSM comprising two sections that significantly reduce the detent force without implementing a skewing design. It was analytically and experimentally confirmed that the proposed design effectively reduces detent force with a negligible sacrifice of mover length. To enhance the current Public Transport (PT) service in the northern Italian region of Lombardy, this work tries to plan fully a new electric Skibus line connecting the cities of Santa Caterina and Livigno. As a first try outside the city environment, the electrification study is set on a limited mountain zone hence featured by steep grades and cold temperatures. In the first part of the paper, the energy consumed by an electric bus working in such a context is assessed, and from the learned outcomes, proper charging infrastructure is proposed. From the found results, the introduction of a new electric bus line in the chosen region seems feasible. Finally, in the last part of the work the performances of an electric bus fleet are compared with that of a diesel one, in terms of fuel costs and Well-to-Wheel (WTW) emissions. The results prove that an electric fleet would be more convenient for both the economic and the environmental aspects.
