A Novel Methodology for the Scalability Analysis of ICT Systems for Smart Grids Based on SGAM: The InteGrid Project Approach
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: information and communication technology, Modelling, OMNeT++, scalability analysis, smart grid architecture model
Information and Communication Technology (ICT) infrastructures are at the heart of emerging Smart Grid scenarios with high penetration of Distributed Energy Resources (DER). The scalability of such ICT infrastructures is a key factor for the large scale deployment of the aforementioned Smart Grid solutions, which could not be ensured by small-scale pilot demonstrations. This paper presents a novel methodology that has been developed in the scope of the H2020 project InteGrid, which enables the scalability analysis of ICT infrastructures for Smart Grids. It is based on the Smart Grid Architecture Model (SGAM) framework, which enables a standardized and replicable approach. This approach consists of two consecutive steps: a qualitative analysis that aims at identifying potential bottlenecks in an ICT infrastructure; and a quantitative analysis of the identified critical links under stress conditions by means of simulations with the aim of evaluating their operational limits. Modeling of Electric Energy Consumption during Dairy Wastewater Treatment Plant Operation
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: activated sludge system, DAF process, dairy wastewater treatment plant, electric energy consumption, Modelling
The intensification of biological wastewater treatment requires the high usage of electric energy, mainly for aeration processes. Publications on energy consumption have been mostly related to municipal wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). The aim of the research was to elaborate on models for the estimation of energy consumption during dairy WWTP operation. These models can be used for the optimization of electric energy consumption. The research was conducted in a dairy WWTP, operating with dissolved air flotation (DAF) and an activated sludge system. Energy consumption was measured with the help of three-phase network parameter transducers and a supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) system. The obtained models provided accurate predictions of DAF, biological treatment, and the overall WWTP energy consumption using chemical oxygen demand (COD), sewage flow, and air temperature. Using the energy consumption of the biological treatment as an independent variable, as well as... [more]

A Comprehensive Review and Qualitative Analysis of Micro-Combined Heat and Power Modeling Approaches
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: cogeneration, engine, micro combined heat and power, Modelling, prime mover
Concurrent production of electrical and thermal energy from a Combined Heat and Power (CHP) device is an attractive tool to address the growing energy needs of the planet. Micro CHP (µCHP) systems can reduce a building’s primary energy consumption, reduce carbon footprint, and enhance resiliency. Modeling of the µCHP helps understand the system from multiple perspectives and helps discover errors earlier, improves impact analysis and simulation of system solutions for ease of integration with the building. Consequently, there is a need for analysis of the impact of µCHP modeling approach on its reliability and flexibility. The primary objective of this paper is to review the state-of-the art models in the µCHP space with a focus towards internal combustion engine as the primary mover (PM) and limit the study to system modeling, calibration, and validation methodologies. Based on the analysis, recommendations for further model considerations and refinements are presented.

Heat Transfer through Wire Cloth Micro Heat Exchanger
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, dimensioning, heat exchanger, heat transfer, micro tubes, Modelling, wire structure
The main objective of this study is to calculate and determine design parameters for a novel wire cloth micro heat exchanger. Wire cloth micro heat exchangers offer a range of promising applications in the chemical industry, plastics technology, the recycling industry and energy technology. We derived correlations to calculate the heat transfer rate, pressure drop and temperature distributions through the woven structure in order to design wire cloth heat exchangers for different applications. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations have been carried out to determine correlations for the dimensionless Euler and Nusselt numbers. Based on these correlations, we have developed a simplified model in which the correlations can be used to calculate temperature distributions and heat exchanger performance. This allows a wire cloth micro heat exchanger to be virtually designed for different applications.

Synthesising Residential Electricity Load Profiles at the City Level Using a Weighted Proportion (Wepro) Model
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: ALPG, electricity, household, load profiles, LPG, Modelling, residential, Wepro model
It is important to understand residential energy use as it is a large energy consumption sector and the potential for change is of great importance for global energy sustainability. A large energy-saving potential and emission reduction potential can be achieved, among others, by understanding energy consumption patterns in more detail. However, existing studies show that it requires many input parameters or disaggregated individual end-uses input data to generate the load profiles. Therefore, we have developed a simplified approach, called weighted proportion (Wepro) model, to synthesise the residential electricity load profile by proportionally matching the city’s main characteristics: Age group, labour force and gender structure with the representative households profiles provided in the load profile generator. The findings indicate that the synthetic load profiles can represent the local electricity consumption characteristics in the case city of Amsterdam based on time variation a... [more]

Retrofit Methodology Based on Energy Simulation Modeling Applied for the Enhancement of a Historical Building in L’Aquila
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: architectural heritage, dynamic simulations, energy optimization, Modelling, retrofit methodology
Energy loss has not been addressed effectively by policies introduced to encourage the preservation and enhancement of historical structures. Material and other constraints, together with safety standard improvements, do not always guarantee adequate levels of environmental performance. An optimization of retrofit measures to align with new uses, new standards of comfort, and energy saving are needed, as are studies based on new best practices for the enhancement of architectural heritage. This paper presents a method that uses dynamic models tared on non-destructive surveys, and based on compatible energy and structural interventions derived from preliminary analyses integrated into special design tools. Energy simulations were carried out using Design Builder (6.1.5.002, Designbuilder Software Ltd, Stroud, UK) software. The case study is a former hospital, S. A State-Space Model of an Inverter-Based Microgrid for Multivariable Feedback Control Analysis and Design
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: inverter control, LQI, microgrid, Modelling, optimal control, stability analysis
In this work, a synchronous model for grid-connected and islanded microgrids is presented. The grid-connected model is based on the premise that the reference frame is synchronized with the AC bus. The quadrature component of the AC bus voltage can be cancelled, which allows to express output power as a linear equation for nominal values in the AC bus amplitude voltage. The model for the islanded microgrid is developed by integrating all the inverter dynamics using a state-space model for the load currents. This model is presented in a comprehensive way such that it could be scalable to any number of inverter-based generators using inductor−capacitor−inductor (LCL) output filters. The use of these models allows designers to assess microgrid stability and robustness using modern control methods such as eigenvalue analysis and singular value diagrams. Both models were tested and validated in an experimental setup to demonstrate their accuracy in describing microgrid dynamics. In addition... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: fixed bed, gasification, Modelling, pyrolysis, thermally thick particle, torrefaction
Gasification of biomass in fixed bed gasifiers is a well-known technology, with its origins dating back to the beginning of 20th century. It is a technology with good prospects, in terms of small scale, decentralized power co-generation. However, the understanding of the process is still not fully developed. Therefore, assessment of the changes in the design of a gasifier is typically performed with extensive prototyping stage, thus introducing significant cost. This study presents experimental results of gasification of a single pellet and bed of particles of raw and torrefied wood. The procedure can be used for obtaining design parameters of a fixed bed gasifier. Results of two suits of experiments, namely pyrolysis and CO2 gasification are presented. Moreover, results of pyrolysis of pellets are compared against a numerical model, developed for thermally thick particles. Pyrolysis time, predicted by model, was in good agreement with experimental results, despite some differences in... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: bioenergy, chemical kinetics, free fatty acid, Modelling, reaction rate constant
To date, to simulate biodiesel production, kinetic models from different authors have been provided, each one usually applied to the use of a specific vegetable oil and experimental conditions. Models, which may include esterification, besides transesterification simulation, were validated with their own experimental conditions and raw material. Moreover, information about the intermediate reaction steps, besides catalyst concentration variation, is either rare or nonexistent. Here, in this work, a universal mathematical model comprising the chemical kinetics of a two-step (esterification and transesterification) vegetable oil-based biodiesel reaction is proposed. The proposed model is universal, as it may simulate any vegetable oil biodiesel reaction from the literature. For this purpose, a mathematical model using the software MATLAB has been designed. This paper presents research on humidity in a passenger car cabin with the use of supply ventilation without cooling the air. Based on the tests carried out and the humidity balance in the car, a model was developed for changing the humidity in the passenger car cabin as a function of time. The study of thermohumid conditions was carried out in two passenger cars. During the tests, the heating and cooling functions were turned off. The relative humidity and temperature were measured outside the car before and after driving the car and in the supply air duct and inside the passenger car cabin while driving the car. The tests were carried out for an average temperature range from 20 to 42.9 °C. In order to develop a model of humidity changes as a function of time, a humidity balance was prepared. Human-generated humidity in the car cabin depends mainly on the temperature inside the car and the age of the person and can range from 20 to 180 g/(h × person) for an adult in the temperature r... Subject: System Identification
Keywords: control, identification, Modelling, supercritical power plants, ultra-supercritical power plants
This paper presents a critical review of the research conducted for modeling and controlling supercritical power plants. Thermal power plants are classified according to the boiler pressure to supercritical and subcritical. The modeling concepts and control strategies of supercritical generation units are far more complex than those of subcritical. On the other hand, supercritical generation technologies are more efficient and much cleaner than subcritical generation units. From a deep technical analysis of the literature, there is no review that is dedicated to models-based control of supercritical power plants and most previous reviews are found to be too general to modeling-based control of fossil fuelled energy sources. This review reports the advancements on modeling and control of supercritical and ultra-supercritical plants as cleaner generation technologies. The various published achievements for modeling supercritical and ultra-supercritical units have been reviewed. The contr... [more]

March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: CO2 emission, energy consumption, energy-efficient glazing, Modelling, residential building, Simulation, thermochromics, window
The building sector contributes approximately one third of the total energy consumption worldwide. A large part of this energy is used for the heating and cooling of buildings, which can be drastically reduced by use of energy-efficient glazing. In this study, we performed building energy simulations on a prototypical residential building, and compared commercially available static (low-e, solar IR blocking) to newly developed adaptive thermochromic glazing systems for various climate regions. The modeling results show that static energy-efficient glazing is mainly optimized for either hot climates, where low solar heat gain can reduce cooling demands drastically, or cold climates, where low-e properties have a huge influence on heating demands. For intermediate climates, we demonstrate that adaptive thermochromic glazing in combination with a low-e coating is perfectly suited. The newly developed thermochromic glazing can lead to annual energy consumption improvement of up to 22% in c... [more]

Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: BJT, Modelling, self-heating, silicon carbide, SPICE
This paper refers to the issue of modelling characteristics of SiC power bipolar junction transistor (BJT), including the self-heating phenomenon. The electrothermal model of the tested device is demonstrated and experimentally verified. The electrical model is based on the isothermal Gummel−Poon model, but several modifications were made including the improved current gain factor (β) model and the modified model of the quasi-saturation region. The accuracy of the presented model was assessed by comparison of measurement and simulation results of selected characteristics of the BT1206-AC SiC BJT manufactured by TranSiC. In this paper, a single device characterization has only been performed. The demonstrated results of research show the evident temperature impact on the transistor d.c. characteristics. Frequency-Domain Nonlinear Modeling Approaches for Power Systems Components—A Comparison
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: harmonic analysis, harmonic balance, Modelling, nonlinearity, power systems
Harmonic simulations play a key role in studying and predicting the impact of nonlinear devices on the power quality level of distribution grids. A frequency-domain approach allows higher computational efficiency, which has key importance as long as complex networks have to be studied. However, this requires proper frequency-domain behavioral models able to represent the nonlinear voltage−current relationship characterizing these devices. The Frequency Transfer Matrix (FTM) method is one of the most widespread frequency domain modeling approaches for power system applications. However, others suitable techniques have been developed in the last years, in particular the X-parameters approach, which comes from radiofrequency and microwave applications, and the simplified Volterra models under quasi-sinusoidal conditions, that have been specifically tailored for power system devices. In this paper FTM, X-parameters and simplified Volterra approaches are compared in representing the nonline... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: battery charger, control, grid-to-vehicle (G2V), Modelling, plug-in electric vehicle (PEV), sliding mode control (SMC), three-phase bidirectional power converter, vehicle-to-grid (V2G)
A nonlinear sliding-mode controller for a three-phase converter, utilized in plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs), is proposed in this paper. The proposed controller enables the utilized converter to perform multiple functions during different operating modes of the vehicle, i.e., grid-to-vehicle (G2V) and vehicle-to-grid (V2G) modes. The bidirectional three-phase converter and the proposed controller operate as a power factor correction circuit, bridgeless boost converter, and rectifier during G2V mode (i.e., plug-in charging), and it operates as a conventional single-stage inverter during V2G mode. The stability analysis of the proposed controller is performed by defining a proper Lyapunov function. The functionality of the proposed nonlinear controller is first evaluated through simulation studies. The feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed control strategy is then validated using an industrial control card through a hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) experimental testbed.

The sixth-generation (6G) mobile networks are expected to operate at a higher frequency to achieve a wider bandwidth and to enhance the frequency reuse efficiency for improved spectrum utilization. In this regard, three-dimensional (3D) spatial reuse of millimeter-wave (mmWave) spectra by in-building small cells is considered an effective technique. In contrast to previous works exploiting microwave spectra, in this paper, we present a technique for the 3D spatial reuse of 28 and 60 GHz mmWave spectra by in-building small cells, each enabled with dual transceivers operating at 28 and 60 GHz bands, to enhance frequency reuse efficiency and achieve the expected spectral efficiency (SE) and energy efficiency (EE) requirements for 6G mobile networks. Subject: Energy Systems
With the Renewable Energy Directive 2018/2001 (RED II), adopted in December 2018, the EU is continuing the political framework for the use of renewable energy sources in the transport sector for the period from 2021 to 2030. At the same time, the German federal government has set a target of reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the transport sector by at least 40% to 42% by 2030 compared to the 1990 GHG level. To investigate the possible effects of the European and national requirements on the German GHG quota, cost-optimal fuel mixes were modelled to achieve the GHG targets of 26 fuel options in each of the nine different scenarios. The results show clear differences between the scenarios that implement the RED II targets (including 14% renewables in transport by 2030) and those that implement the climate protection target (40−42% GHG reduction compared to 1990 by 2030). If only the minimum requirements of RED II are met, the German climate protection target is clearly missed wi... [more]

A Novel Approach on the Unipolar Axial Type Eddy Current Brake Model Considering the Skin Effect

Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: braking torque, eddy current brake, Modelling, skin effect
The braking torque mathematical modelling in electromagnetic eddy current brake (ECB) often ignores the skin effect that occurrs during operation. However this phenomenon can not be simply neglected. Therefore, this paper presents a mathematical model of braking torque for a unipolar axial type of ECB system with a non-magnetic disk, which considers the skin effects. The use of mathematical models that consider the existence of skin effects is significant in approaching the braking torque according to the actual condition. The utilization of generic calculations to the model of the ECB braking torque leads to invalid results. Hence, in this paper, the correction factor was added to improve the braking torque calculation as a comparator to the proposed equation. However, the modification and addition of the correction factor were only valid to estimate the low-speed regimes of torque, but very distant for the high-speed condition. This paper describes the approach to the frequency response modelling of transformer windings consisting of coils connected in parallel. At present, computer models are intensively developed with the aim of simulating the influence of faults on the frequency response of the active part of power transformers. Frequency response analysis (FRA) is one of the standard methods used for the assessment of the mechanical condition of a transformer’s windings and core. The interpretation of the FRA results is crucial in the diagnostics of the active part of the transformer. Proper simulations of the FRA results allow the improvement and simplification of the interpretation process of the windings’ faults. Usually only serial winding wires are simulated in computer modelling and parallel wires are simplified, leading to simulation inaccuracies. In this work, a combined electromagnetic field/network method, which includes parallel connections of the coils, is proposed. The method is based on lump... [more]
