Flexibility as the Key to Stability: Optimization of Temperature and Gas Feed during Downtime towards Effective Integration of Biomethanation in an Intermittent Energy System
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: biofuel, biological methanation, biomethanation, energy systems, intermittent feeding, power-to-gas, trickle bed reactors
Biological methanation is the production of CH4 from CO2 and H2. While this approach to carbon capture utilization have been widely researched in the recent years, there is a gap in the technology. The gap is towards the flexibility in biomethanation, utilizing biological trickling filters (BTF). With the current intermittent energy system, electricity is not a given surplus energy which will interfere with a continuous operation of biomethanation and will result in periods of operational downtime. This study investigated the effect of temperature and H2 supply during downtimes, to optimize the time needed to regain initial performance. Short (6 h), medium (24 h) and long (72 h) downtimes were investigated with combinations of three different temperatures and three different flow rates. The results from these 27 experiments showed that with the optimized parameters, it would take 60 min to reach 98.4% CH4 in the product gas for a short downtime, whereas longer downtimes needed 180 min... Important Factors for Consideration during the Specification of SF6 Circuit Breakers for High Voltage Generators
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: alternating current component, asynchronous connection, circuit breaker, direct current component, energy system, generator
This paper describes and analyzes the phenomena that occur in the case of a current interruption due to faults in the high voltage circuit breaker. That happens during connection of a generator to the network without meeting the synchronization conditions. This paper also describes and analyzes the important factors that have to be considered during the specification of SF6 circuit breakers for high voltage generators. A high direct current component in the fault current poses a major problem during such interruptions. To investigate this problem and propose possible solutions, simulations were performed on a power network model completed with the network’s data, using software such as EMTP-ATP, PSS-E and MATLAB. Various modes of operation were simulated, which are important for analyzing the strain on circuit breakers near the generator. Based on the performed simulations, it can be concluded that circuit breakers with rapid reactions in interrupting the fault current in an energy sys... [more]

Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: energy system, GCAM-Korea, high spatial resolution analysis, integrated assessment model
Integrated assessment modeling at a higher spatial scale is a prerequisite for deriving region-specific implications from the model. The Global Change Assessment Model (GCAM) was chosen for GCAM-Korea, a detailed integrated assessment model (IAM) of Korea’s socioeconomic and energy systems. GCAM-Korea is developed based on GCAM-USA. Data for 16 provinces have been collected from various sources. Some data have been pre-processed to fit within the specific structure of GCAM-USA data. Other types of data were newly added through new structures. The model results were validated to be compatible with historical trends. It was found that provincial energy plans or policies could be compiled in detail using the proposed model while maintaining consistency with national level modeling results. The cross-border air pollution issue in Northeast Asia could also be addressed by combining GCAM-Korea and air quality models in the future.

A Method for Analyzing Energy-Related Carbon Emissions and the Structural Changes: A Case Study of China from 2005 to 2015
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: carbon flow, energy allocation analysis, energy system, energy-related carbon emissions, Sankey diagrams, structural changes, TRO index
To systematically analyze energy-related carbon emissions from the perspective of comprehensive energy flow and allocate emissions responsibility, we introduce energy allocation analysis to carbon flow process based on Sankey diagrams. Then, to quantitatively compare different diagrams and evaluate the structural changes of carbon flow, we define changes from three dimensions including total amount change, relative growth rate and occupation ratio change (TRO), propose TRO index. The method is applied to China’s case study from 2005 to 2015. We map China’s energy-related carbon flow Sankey diagrams with high technical resolution from energy sources, intermediate conversion, end-use devices, passive systems to final services, and conduct TRO index decomposition by stages. The results indicate that in energy sources, the emission share of coal has declined due to energy transition although coal is still the largest contributor to China’s energy-related carbon emissions. Replacing Fossil Fuels and Nuclear Power with Renewable Energy: Utopia or Valid Option? A Swiss Case Study of Bioenergy
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: bioenergy, energy demand, energy system, energy transition, renewable energy potentials
The transition towards a reliable, sustainable, low-carbon energy system is a major challenge of the 21st century. Due to the lower energy density of many renewable energy sources, a future system is expected to be more decentralized, leading to significant changes at the regional scale. This study analyzes the feasibility of the energy transition in the Swiss canton of Aargau as an illustrative example and explores different strategies to satisfy the local demand for electricity, heat, and fuel by 2035. In particular, we assess the potential contribution of biomass. Four scenarios demonstrate what energy demand proportion could be covered by bioenergy if different priorities were given to the provision of heat, electricity, and fuel. The impact of improved conversion technologies is also considered. The results show that the sustainably available renewable energy sources in canton Aargau will probably not be sufficient to cover its forecasted energy demand in 2035, neither with presen... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: asset management, case study, energy systems, engineering failure analysis, maintenance strategies, power transformers
The outburst of population as well as increasing industrialisation have triggered a very prominent imbalance between electricity demand and supply in emerging economies such as Indonesia. Based on this premise, electricity generation and distribution firms such as Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN) are faced with an urgent need to enhance availability and reliability through capacity expansion as well as the institutionalisation of cost-effective maintenance and asset management (MAM) principles. Some of the principles recommended here involve embedding customised overall health index (OHI) and total life cycle cost (LCC) estimation principles into engineering decisions that relate to asset renewal and/or replacement. While discussions about the fundamental theories and estimation approaches for OHI and LCC for power transformers (PTs) already exist in the current body of literature, however, they are mostly in a generic form which has somewhat limited proper implementation of these valua... Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Energy Storage, energy system, geographic information system, Hydrogen, natural gas network, water electrolysis, wind energy
The results of a techno-economic model of distributed wind-hydrogen systems (WHS) located at each existing wind farm on the island of Ireland are presented in this paper. Hydrogen is produced by water electrolysis from wind energy and backed up by grid electricity, compressed before temporarily stored, then transported to the nearest injection location on the natural gas network. The model employs a novel correlation-based approach to select an optimum electrolyser capacity that generates a minimum levelised cost of hydrogen production (LCOH) for each WHS. Three scenarios of electrolyser operation are studied: (1) curtailed wind, (2) available wind, and (3) full capacity operations. Additionally, two sets of input parameters are used: (1) current and (2) future techno-economic parameters. Additionally, two electricity prices are considered: (1) low and (2) high prices. Cluster-Based Prediction for Batteries in Data Centers
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: classification, clustering, energy systems, forecasting
Prediction of a battery’s health in data centers plays a significant role in Battery Management Systems (BMS). Data centers use thousands of batteries, and their lifespan ultimately decreases over time. Predicting battery’s degradation status is very critical, even before the first failure is encountered during its discharge cycle, which also turns out to be a very difficult task in real life. Therefore, a framework to improve Auto-Regressive Integrated Moving Average (ARIMA) accuracy for forecasting battery’s health with clustered predictors is proposed. Clustering approaches, such as Dynamic Time Warping (DTW) or k-shape-based, are beneficial to find patterns in data sets with multiple time series. The aspect of large number of batteries in a data center is used to cluster the voltage patterns, which are further utilized to improve the accuracy of the ARIMA model. Our proposed work shows that the forecasting accuracy of the ARIMA model is significantly improved by applying the result... [more]

Effect of Operating Conditions on the Performance of Gas−Liquid Mixture Roots Pumps
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, energy systems, multiphase flow, Roots pump
The performance of the gas−liquid mixture Roots pump at different operating conditions is investigated in this paper. The pump efficiency was first increased from 48% to 64%, and then decreased to 59% with the increased inlet CO2 volume fraction (from 0.8 to 1). The increased rotational speed (from 1000 rpm to 4000 rpm) and pressure ratio (from 2 to 10) can lead to a reduction in the pump’s efficiency from 67% to 43% and from 48% to 33%, respectively. The variation in the pump’s efficiency is affected by the volumetric efficiency and the flow efficiency simultaneously. The high pressure and the CO2 volume fraction in the outlet zone can increase the leakage, leading to a reduction in the volumetric efficiency. The flow efficiency decreases with the increase in the local pressure at the outlet zone and the backflow density. The outlet zone pressure can also affect the fluid properties by changing the density of the gas phase. Therefore, the combined effect of the outlet zone pressure an... [more]

Energy System Monitoring Based on Fuzzy Cognitive Modeling and Dynamic Clustering
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: dynamic clustering, energy system, fuzzy cognitive model, monitoring
A feature of energy systems (ESs) is the diversity of objects, as well as the variety and manifold of the interconnections between them. A method for monitoring ESs clusters is proposed based on the combined use of a fuzzy cognitive approach and dynamic clustering. A fuzzy cognitive approach allows one to represent the interdependencies between ESs objects in the form of fuzzy impact relations, the analysis results of which are used to substantiate indicators for fuzzy clustering of ESs objects and to analyze the stability of clusters and ESs. Dynamic clustering methods are used to monitor the cluster structure of ESs, namely, to assess the drift of cluster centers, to determine the disappearance or emergence of new clusters, and to unite or separate clusters of ESs.

Often, second law-based studies present merely entropy calculations without demonstrating how and whether such calculations may be beneficial. Entropy generation is commonly viewed as lost work or sometimes a source of thermodynamic losses. Recent literature reveals that minimizing the irreversibility of a heat engine may correspond to maximizing thermal efficiency subject to certain design constraints. The objective of this article is to show how entropy calculations need to be interpreted in thermal processes, specifically, where heat-to-work conversion is not a primary goal. We will study four exemplary energy conversion processes: (1) a biomass torrefaction process where torrefied solid fuel is produced by first drying and then torrefying raw feedstock, (2) a cryogenic air separation system that splits ambient air into oxygen and nitrogen while consuming electrical energy, (3) a cogeneration process whose desirable outcome is to produce both electrical and thermal energy, and (4) a... The increasing levels of energy consumption worldwide is raising issues with respect to surpassing supply limits, causing severe effects on the environment, and the exhaustion of energy resources. Buildings are one of the most relevant sectors in terms of energy consumption; as such, efficient Home or Building Management Systems are an important topic of research. This study discusses the use of ensemble techniques in order to improve the performance of artificial neural networks models used for energy forecasting in residential houses. The case study is a residential house, located in Portugal, that is equipped with PV generation and battery storage and controlled by a Home Energy Management System (HEMS). It has been shown that the ensemble forecasting results are superior to single selected models, which were already excellent. A simple procedure was proposed for selecting the models to be used in the ensemble, together with a heuristic to determine the number of models.

Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: configuration energy acquisition factor, energy system, joint-wing configuration, partial shading, solar-powered aircraft
Solar-powered aircraft can perform long-term flights with clean solar energy. However, the energy derived from solar irradiation is influenced by the time of year and latitude, which limits the energy acquisition ability of solar aircraft with a straight-wing configuration. Hence, unconventional configurations based on increasing wing dihedral to track the sun are proposed to improve energy acquisition at high-latitude regions in winter, which may involve power loss caused by mismatch in the photovoltaic system. However, mismatch loss is seldom considered and may cause energy to be overestimated. In this paper, the energy acquisition characteristics of a joint-wing configuration are presented based on the simulation of an energy system to investigate the mismatch power loss. The results indicate a 4~15% deviation from the frequently used estimation method and show that the mismatch loss is influenced by the curved upper surface, the severity of shading and the circuit configuration. Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: distribution grid, energy grid, energy system, energy transition, European framework programmes, transmission grid
In the acceleration phase transitions often increase in depth and scope, and thereby create knock-on effects for wider system structures. In the renewable energy transition, for example, higher shares of intermittent renewable energy sources call for new grid technologies to increase flexible grid operation. At the same time, there are different ways of achieving renewable energy transitions and providing flexibility. In Europe, important tensions exist over how centralised or decentralised a renewable energy electricity system should be. This paper explores to what extent and how European framework programmes for research and development have addressed and supported innovation in transmission grid (centralised system) and distribution grid (decentralised) technologies. Guaranteeing reliable access to water and clean energy has been one of the most debated topics to promote sustainable development, which has made the Water−Energy Nexus (WEN) a relevant field of study. However, despite much development of the WEN, there are still many gaps to be addressed. One of these gaps is the understanding of temporal features. To address this, this study aimed to identify, categorize, and analyze the main temporal features applied in WEN studies based on a review of academic publications from 2010 to 2021. The results showed that most of the recent literature has focused on understanding the WEN from a quantitative perspective, often does not provide clear motivations for their choice of time, and lacks understanding of the role of historical processes. In this paper, a framework to assess the resilience of energy systems using quantitative indicators is presented. Two main groups of resilience indicators are proposed that depend on what is being measured within the energy system: capacity (attribute-based) indicators or performance in the presence of disruption (performance-based) indicators. This study concentrates on the first resilience phase, when the energy system has to absorb the impact of the shock. The approach considers various disruptions (both internal and external) as triggering events.
